Moise and the World of Reason

New York: Simon and Schuster. (1975). First. First edition. Fine in a slightly age-toned, else fine dustwrapper. Inscribed by Williams to actress Ruth Ford: "To Ruth with my heart on my sleeve. Love, Tennessee." In Williams' Memoirs he refers to Ford as "the wise and lovely actress, Ruth Ford, who seems to have been born with more worldly wisdom than I have accumulated even at this point in life." Ford, the Mississippi-born sister of surrealist author Charles Henri Ford, was a beautiful model and actress, first in Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre, and later in films and theater. Notably, she starred on Broadway in Jean Paul Sartre's No Exit in 1946, under the direction of John Huston (the last of five Broadway plays he directed). Her apartment in the Dakota became a salon for authors such as Williams, Edward Albee, Terrence McNally, and Truman Capote. A chance encounter between Stephen Sondheim and Arthur Laurents in her Manhattan living room led to their collaboration, with her Dakota-neighbor Leonard Bernstein, on West Side Story. Similarly, she brought together Kay Thompson and Hilary Knight to create the celebrated stories of Eloise, the little girl who lived at the Plaza.Ford is well known also for her long friendship with William Faulkner, which began with her dating his brother Dean in the early 1930s. Faulkner was openly smitten with Ford for many years. He wrote his experimental 1951 title Requiem for a Nun, a sequel to his early and controversial novel Sanctuary, with her in mind. He further declared, to the consternation of his agent and publisher, that it was her dramatic property (Requiem for a Nun was a mixture of stage play and novel). Stage production of the title stalled for years, partly because Faulkner's experimental drama did not lend itself to live theatre, and partly because the producers were unsure of Ford's suitability. Faulkner was adamant that it was her dramatic property, and in 1959 she adapted the play herself and starred in its London production opposite her second husband, Zachary Scott. Her stage version received enthusiastic reviews in both London and New York, but did not fare so well with audiences and closed after a short run on Broadway. Ford continued to act on both stage and screen well into the 1980s. She passed away in 2009 at the age of 98. A wonderful inscription and nice association. .

The Last Words of Dutch Schultz: A Fiction in the Form of a Film Script

New York: Viking Press. 1975. First. First edition. Fine in a slightly age-toned, else fine dustwrapper. Inscribed by Burroughs to actress Ruth Ford: "For Ruth W. Ford, all the best from the Dutchman, William S. Burroughs." Ford, the Mississippi-born sister of surrealist author Charles Henri Ford, was a beautiful model and actress, first in Orson Welles's Mercury Theatre, and later in films and theater.

CONFESSIONS OF A CRAP ARTIST

New York: Entwhistle Books,. 1975. Octavo,. cloth.. A fine copy without dust jacket as issued. (#119117). First edition. 1000 copies printed of which this is number 85 of 90 numbered copies signed by Dick. This variant has the "first edition" statement on the copyright page. In Dick's opinion, this novel was "easily the best of all his mainstream efforts." Written in 1959 in the midst of Dick's "exceedingly ambitious -- and totally unsuccessful -- attempt to break into the mainstream-novel market ... Graceful, wry, vulnerable, pessimistic and wise, they are novels less good only than the best of PKD's intense prime, which began immediately [with TIME OUT OF JOINT]." - Clute and Nicholls (eds), The Encyclopedia of Science Fiction (1993), p. 328.

        TYPED LETTER - SIGNED

Washington, DC, U.S.A. 1975 - MICHAEL COLLINS - Typed Letter Signed Typed letter thanking a gentleman for a recent letter that he sent. On Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum letterhead, measured 7" X 9" and is dated February 21, 1975. Condition: Normal mailing folds. Fine condition. "Dear Lt. Higbee: Thank you for your letter of January 25. Our Sextant was different from yours, and probably should have been called a telescope. It had 28 power magnification and a narrow (less than 1) field of view. Hence we could see objects a long way off provided we knew fairly precisely which way to look for them. Hope this explains it. With all best wishes, Sincerely, (Michael Collins) Michael Collins Director." As pilot on the 3-day Gemini X mission, launched July 18, 1966, Collins shared with command pilot John Young in the accomplishments of that record-setting flight. These accomplishments included a successful rendezvous and docking with a separately launched Agena target vehicle and, using the power of the Agena, maneuvering the Gemini spacecraft into another orbit for a rendezvous with a second, passive Agena. Collins' skillful performance in completing two periods of extravehicular activity included the recovery of a micrometeorite detection experiment from the passive Agena. Gemini X attained an apogee of approximately 475 statute miles and traveled a distance of 1,275,091 statute miles--after which splashdown occurred in the West Atlantic, 529 miles east of Cape Kennedy. The spacecraft landed 2.6 miles from the USS GUADALCANAL and became the second spacecraft in the Gemini program to land within eye and camera range of the prime recovery ship. Collins served as command module pilot on Apollo 11, July 16-24, 1969--the first lunar landing mission. He remained aboard the command module ,Columbia, on station in lunar orbit while Neil Armstrong, spacecraft commander, and Edwin Aldrin, lunar module pilot, descended to the lunar surface in their lunar module Eagle. Collins performed the final re-docking maneuvers following a successful lunar orbit rendezvous which was initiated by Armstrong and Aldrin from within the Eagle after their ascent from the lunar surface. Among the accomplishments of the Apollo 11 mission were collection of lunar surface samples for return to earth, deployment of lunar surface experiments, and an extensive evaluation of the life supporting extravehicular mobility unit worn by astronauts. Collins completed two space flights, logging 266 hours in space--of which 1 hour and 27 minutes was spent in EVA. He left NASA in January 1970, and is Director of the National Air & Space Museum, Smithsonian Institution, in Washington, D.C. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Lothar-Günther Buchheim was a German propaganda officer serving in Kriegsmarine (the German Navy) the during World War II acting as war correspondent and recounting his experiences on German minesweepers, destroyers, and submarines. In such capacity, Buchheim also made drawings and took photographs. He ultimately served on U-96, a submarine commanded by Heinrich Lehmann-Willenbrock who was a leading German submarine commander during the Battle of the Atlantic which lasted from 1939 until the Allies defeated Germany in 1945. Lehmann-Willenbrock came to great fame due to his success and the publicity thereof provided by Buchheim who was aboard U-96 during its sinking of several of the 24 ships sunk under Lehmann-Willenbrock's command. Several decades after the War, Buchheim wrote his most famous and most successful book, "Das Boot", a fictionalized autobiographical account of his time during the War. "Das Boot" provided the basis for the 1981 German film nominated for six Academy Awards. Nicknamed "Starnberg volcano", Buchheim was known for his temper, and both that temper and his corresponding temperament clearly show through in his letters. In them, he repeatedly complains about Knopf, his American publisher, and often about his American Agent, Joan Daves, peppering his letters with such phrases as "There is nothing worse for an author...", of a French translator "she is so miserable", for a telegram of the American efforts he "waited with fear and trembling", he describes himself as "extraordinarily stingy", complains constantly about a "lack of communication" from New York and states that it is driving him wild, describes American reviewers as idiots, others as imbeciles, declares himself to be annoyed, sour, and hanging "in the air" over the lack of information from Knopf, complains vehemently about being forwarded a hospital bill in the amount of $35 for a Proctoscopy he had while in New York -- arguing that it should have been covered by Knopf as part of his expenses for a meeting in New York, says his anger at Knopf "knows no limits at all", complains about the American translation of "Das Boot" states that the Hollywood folks trying to make a movie of the book must refer to the UK translation in order to understand the book. He seldom shows satisfaction, much less happiness. In response to one of his letters, Carol Janeway of Knopf begins her reply to him with "Dear Herr Buchheim, Peace! White Flag! Surrender!". All in all a remarkable and interesting Archive replete with Buchheim signatures and EXCEEDINGLY SCARCE as such.
