        UGLY RUMOURS

George Allen & Unwin,, London 1975 - Wolff, Tobias. UGLY RUMOURS. London: George Allen & Unwin, 1975. Octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket. First edition, one of reportedly less than 1000 copies printed. Wolff's first novel concerns a Special Forces lieutenant and a sergeant serving as advisors to a Vietnamese Infantry Division. Ugly Rumours was never published in the United States and Wolff has refused to list it among his "previous publications." His 1994 memoir, In Pharoah's Army, alludes somewhat derisively to a novel he was writing while serving in Vietnam-presumably Ugly Rumours. A superior fine/fine example of this important novel. One of the most difficult Viet Nam titles to acquire especially in condition. A beautiful copy. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

        Ugly Rumours

London, George Allen & Unwin Ltd., , 1975. Octavo. Original black boards in dust jacket. Light toning, else very good in unclipped jacket, almost imperceptibly tanned due to the laminate having gone "off". First Edition. Published only in Britain, the author's first novel, indeed his first book, but subsequently repudiated, never reprinted and removed from his list of publications. Based on his experiences in Vietnam and written under the influence of Pynchon Ugly Rumours is a satirical tale of life "up country". "I loved it until the moment I read it as a book. When I received the bound copies, I sat down with great pleasure to read this book that I had written and slaved over for a couple of years, and I couldn't stand it.

A Model of the World`s First Domestic Satellite: ANIK 1

[Made by Hughes Aircraft Company, 1975. 1st Edition. Wooden Case. Very Good. ANIK MEANS "LITTLE BROTHER"[Hughes Aircraft Company]. 1975. [Model of Anik 1]. Model of Anik 1 in metal 3½" long, 2 ½ " wide across the top, and 1 ¼ ". with a wing on each side each extending 10½", 2"wide. The satellite model is attached to an angled plexiglass construction which is then mounted on an oval wooden base ¾" thick, 3 13/16`" at its widest point, and 4 7/16`` at its longest point. On the base there is a plaque reading : L`Honorable Gérard Pelletier/ Ministre Des Communications/ 1972-1975. The model is stored within a custom fitted wood case with a handle, 25" long, 6¼`" wide, and 7 ¼" deep. The base of the satellite fits into a space inset into the bottom of the case, the top of the satellite is protected by foam attached to the inner surface of the top cover, and the interior space is covered in green felt. The model is in very good condition except for one small ding at the bottom corner of the left wing. The box shows some wear on the surfaces. Anik 1 was launched in 1972 as the world`s first domestic communications satellite in order to transmit television signals from Canada`s national broadcaster, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation, to Arctic communities and to provide telephone service to the North. In the United States the first domestic satellite was Westar 1, which Anik preceded by two years.HUGHES AIRCRAFT COMPANY. [1972]. [ text of plaque at base of model] ANIK / PREMIER SATELLITE DE COMMUNICATIONS INTERIEURES / AU MONDE / Mis au Point et Fabriqé / Par la Compagnie Hughes Aircraft / Pour le Compte de Télésat Canada / Offert en Hommage á l`Honorable Gérard Pelletier. [Translation: Anik. First domestic communications satellite in the world, created and manufactured by The Hughes Aircraft Company, for Telesat Canada. Offered in homage to The Honorable Gérard Pelletier. ] Gérard Pelletier (1919-1997) was a distinguished Canadian who is famous as one of the three Quebeckers who entered federal politics at the same time and went on to have very important careers: Jean Marchand, Gérard Pelletier, and Prime Minister Pierre Elliot Trudeau. Mr. Pelletier was the Minister of Communications in Prime Minister Trudeau`s cabinet from 1972 to 1976. See his autobiographical memoir L`aventure du Pouvoir 1968-1975 for a discussion of the government`s reasons for launching Anik 1. This satellite and others in the Anik series were used subsequently to distribute television signals to cable head ends for television distribution all over Canada.

The Young Errol : Flynn Before Hollywood

Angus & Robertson, 1975, Paperback, Book Condition: Good Condition, First EditionFirst softcover edition. 154 pages. Covers have moderate rubbing/wear. Edges of covers have moderate wear. Spine has moderate reading creases. Pages are reasonably tanned. Edges of pages are reasonably browned.A fascinating account of the early life of one of Australia's most colorful and controversial sons. John Hammond Moore trace film star Errol Flynn's turbulent career from his birth in sedate Hobart through his eccentric schooldays and his youth in Sydney and cruising the Pacific to his years as a pioneer tobacco planter in Papua and the discovery that led to Hollywood and stardom. The author comments: 'While his golden age in Hollywood produced wondrous swashbuckling, Errol Flynn was not really acting at all. He was merely transferring a natural style developed in Sydney, Port Moresby, Rabaul, and London to a much larger audience. Anecdotes, quotations from Flynn's own diaries and from people who knew him in Australia and Papua New Guinea crowd one upon the other to underscore this truth, and to embellish this rollicking tale of a man who in the author's words: 'lived for half a century the sort of life adolescents dream of but men dare not attempt. This a very scarce copy of the first printing of this title which has been in great demand since it's original release in 1975. Quantity Available: 1.         The Book Of Sand

Santa Rosa, CA: Nawakum Press. Fine. 2013. Signed by Artist. Cloth. One of 30 copies, of which 24 were for sale. In Spanish and in English, the text is letterpress printed on Curtis Holcomb Text and handmade Cave Paper from Minneapolis, Minnesota. Garamond types were cast by Michael and Winifred Bixler of Skanaeteles, New York. Copper relief etchings, mirroring the style noted in the story, are designed into the text and printed from the copper plates on blocks mounted type high. They are accompanied by two large copper etchings printed by the artist, recessed into boards covered with Japanese book cloth and with a Cave Paper overleaf. The peak roofed book, taking inspiration from the Biblioteca National, measures 11" x 13-1/2" and is housed in a covered box made from Cave Paper over boards. The cover label is letterpress printed on Cave Paper and inset with Japanese book cloth. Each copy is signed by the artist; "The Book of Sand" is a short story written by Jorge Luis Borges, first published in Spanish in 1975. It was from his last major collection of the same name. Borges was born in 1899 and began publishing his poetry and essays in surrrealistic literary journals in the early twenties. He later went on to much critical acclaim, sharing the first Priz International with Samuel Beckett. Borges was named director of the National Library of Argentina (Biblioteca National) in 1955, and served for nearly twenty years while almost entirely blind. Soon after resigning his position he wrote his story of a retired librarian and a very unusual book. Designed in an artists' book format, in collaboration with Peggy Gotthold and Lawernce G. Van Velzer of Foolscap Press, the Nawakum Press edition of The Book of Sand was printed and bound at their press in Santa Cruz, California. Artist and printmaker Thomas Wood of Bellingham, Washington was comissioned to create the etchings for this bilingual limited edition .

One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest [The Movie, Signed by Kesey]

HBO/Cannon Video n.d, NY - A VHS tape of the 1975 Academy Award-winning movie based on Kesey's novel. Signed by Kesey on the case, over the picture of Jack Nicholson, who himself won an Academy Award for the lead role. The fact that it is signed over the photo of Nicholson may be a statement on Kesey's part: he was known to have hated the casting of Nicholson as McMurphy and reportedly even considered having his own name taken off the movie in protest. He had thought that a more physically imposing actor, such as Gene Hackman, would have been more appropriate than Nicholson. Kesey's son, Zane, said that this was the only copy of the movie he had ever heard of being signed by his father, because of how thoroughly unhappy with the film he was. Fine in a very good, rubbed case, with a small sticker removal abrasion. Needless to say, scarce signed. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

[High School Yearbook]: 1975 Kalibarb: The Kalibre [bound with several issues of] The Barblet

DeKalb, IL: DeKalb High School. 1975. First. First and only edition. Screwbound printed yellow binder. Quarto. The wrapperbound yearbook, The Kalibre, bound with ten of twelve possible issues of the school newspaper, The Barblet (lacking issues seven and ten), for author Richard Powers's (here referred to mostly as Rick Powers) senior year of high school. Slight tears in the yellow cloth binder, some pages well-thumbed, student inscriptions in the yearbook, and a couple of leaves loose but sound, a very good example. Powers is pictured on at least three pages in the yearbook, twice in band pictures, and once in the National Honor Society, although curiously, he is not represented by a senior class picture. According to biographies of Powers he spent much of his high school time in Thailand, and only returned to DeKalb to finish high school, and was perhaps thus not present for the photo. He also appears at least three times in the issues of The Barblet, twice playing the cello, and once at a National Honor Society Assembly (we have by no means exhaustively searched the bound volume and may have missed other appearances). According to our research, Powers is the second most important graduate of the high school, after supermodel Cindy Crawford. .

        Legs

New York: Coward, McCann & Geoghegan. (1975). Uncorrected proof. A couple of small smudges or spots on the wrappers, else just about fine. Ownership Signature of Hunter S. Thompson on the front blank. Typed Letter Signed from Senior Editor Peggy Brooks to Thompson sending the proof and soliciting a blurb from him. Ultimately the book appeared with blurbs from Alison Lurie and Doris Grumbach, with nary a word from Thompson as near as we can tell, although he obviously saw fit to write his name in it. Kennedy and Thompson met in San Juan, Puerto Rico in 1960 and became lifelong friends after a series of acidic letter between the pair resulting from Kennedy's rejection of Thompson, who had applied for a position at the English-language newspaper where Kennedy was managing editor. Thompson turned his time as a young writer struggling in San Juan into his first novel, The Rum Diary, which was written in the early 1960's but not published until 1998. The first book in Kennedy's celebrated Albany cycle, with a notable association. .

According to our research, Powers is the second most important graduate of the high school, after supermodel Cindy Crawford. .
