Handwritten Lyrics for "Volunteers" and Jefferson Starship's "Miracles"

Two 8.5" x 11" sheets, the first sheet with Jefferson Starship's "Miracles" lyrics handwritten on both sides by Marty Balin (but unsigned), and the second with Jefferson Airplane's "Volunteers" lyrics on a single side by Balin and Signed by both Balin and Paul Kantner. Likely created years later as a souvenir. Both sheets are fine. Balin originally formed Jefferson Airplane, although it was Kantner who was seen to be the leader of the group, and who later went on to form "Jefferson Starship" after Jefferson Airplane began to disband in the early 1970s. "Miracles" was written by Balin and appeared on their 1975 album Red Octopus where it reached number three on the Billboard Hot 100 for three weeks, making it the band's highest charting single that they recorded in its "Starship" iteration. "Volunteers" meanwhile was released in 1969 on the album of the same name which made it onto Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums of all time. Both groups included front woman, Grace Slick, who sang and played piano for the bands and "earned a position as one of the most prominent female rock musicians of her time." .

New York: New York and London: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich,, 1975. With original photographs (January 1914?-July 1931) and quotations from Isak Dinesen (Karen Blixen). Collected by Peter Beard. Tall quarto. Original black boards, titles to spine in white, image of Blixen to upper board and of, tan endpapers. With the dust jacket. Illustrations throughout. Minor rubbing and wear to extremities, slight staining from ink drawing. An excellent copy in a lightly rubbed jacket. First edition, first printing. Inscribed by Peter Beard and with an ink drawing of a couple of hogs and an undulating horizon across both front endpapers: "To Patrick with warm greetings and Salaams from Hog Ranch and beyond, Jan. 27th '88 ?- 116 E.95 N.Y.C." and "hurry over ?- it's getting late...regards, Peter (Beard)...from the real jungle." With additional annotation in the author's hand to title page: "Box 47616 Nairobi". The American artist and photographer Beard was inspired to visit Africa, photograph its wild animals, and eventually buy a home there, after reading Blixen's Out of Africa. This book, compiled by Beard, combines Kamante's watercolours and his version of the events of Out of Africa (translated and handwritten by his sons) with Blixen's notes and previously unpublished photographs by Blixen, Beard, and others. A beautiful volume with a lovely, and unusually substantive, presentation illustration.

The Ondt and the Gracehoper from Two Tales of Shem and Shaun

Joesph J. D'Ambrosio, Chicago, Illinois 1975 - What a remarkable work of art! This edition of The Ondt and the Gracehoper, limited to fifty numbered copies (41) and five artists proofs, has been set in 18pt Bulmer and printed by The Compulsive Printer of Portage Indiana, on a Number three Vandercook proof press. The serigraphs which are quite striking, block prints and presentation case were all prepared by the artist, the late, great Joe D'Ambrosio The cover relief serigraph is gilded with 23 K gold. The story is taken from Two Tales of Shem and Shaun by james Joyce. The book appears to be a bound book, but is really a case and the pages are loose within it. The cover relief-serigraph was produced with 26 layers of silkscreen ink, and then gilded with 23K gold leaf. The last coat of ink is red and lies just below the top layer of gold. As the gold wears away, a red patina will slowly emerge allowing this edition to age gracefully. This device is fro the Italian gilder's craft of gold leaf over red clay. The binding is dark green Ultrasuede over board framing; pinwale corduroy sides and lining. A great piece of art and a great Joyce collectible. Internally flawless the framed clamshell box has small bump on front lower corner a little warped and slight rubbing due to the nature of ultrasuede. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Simple Simon and the Dragon. Together with typed letter, signed.

London 1929; 1975 - Bifolium. 4pp. Offprint from a children's annual containing original text and illustrations by Cox printed in two colors. Above the final illustration, Cox's name appears as "Mauris Cox." A story about a lazy boy who is cast out of his house by his mother; then, with the help of a goose, a mouse, a bull and a blacksmith, he subdues a dragon by tickling him, thereby freeing the blacksmith's daughter and taking possession of the dragon's treasure. Accompanied by a typed letter, signed, to South African collector Corrie Guyt on Gogmagog stationery. Dated 28 July 1975, Cox responds to Guyt's "wonderful letter" and to a comment Guyt made about his art: "It was most encouraging to hear you speak of my art as being young in spirit," adding, "I was never one to formulate a style and then go on repeating it for the rest of my life. Always I am full of ideas and looking for new ways to formulate them." After acknowledging the difficult social and political climate facing apartheid South Africa and his concern for "young people," Cox then offers Guyt some background into his early work for children. Cox credits his youngest brother with getting him started in writing and illustrating stories for children, starting around 1920, when Cox was 17. Through his agent, he was able to get work writing and illustrating stories for Children's Annuals: "So for Oxford University Press I would write an original story, letter this by hand and supply sixteen drawings in two colors and all for 3 guineas a page!" Eventually, Cox lost interest because "they would not publish my work as books," and he found it more lucrative to sell single sketches and book jacket designs. "So you see, Corrie," Cox concludes, "my children's work was not really fulfilled." Referring to the Simple Simon story included here, Cox tells Guyt that he is sending it along "as a little present so that you can see what it was like," and he identifies it as having been done in 1929. An exceptional letter from Cox to one of his major collectors with a very ephemeral early work, both in fine condition. [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

MANUSCRIPT MAQUETTE FOR THE BOOK, CREEPY CASTLE. Together with a smaller manuscript book proposal and the US first edition.

Macmillan. London. 1975 - The original manuscript maquette of Goodall's wordless picture book, Creepy Castle, which would be published in 1975 by Macmillan in London and Atheneum in New York. 2 pen and watercolour manuscripts, 1 oblong octavo (190 x 140 mm) and 1 square octavo (135 x 126 mm). Volume I: loose gatherings with illustrated wrappers, 15 double page drawings (368 x 134 mm), of which all but one feature a flap which changes the scene, and 2 single page drawings (182 x 134 mm). Volume II: bound with illustrated self-wrappers, 4 double page drawings (253 x 134 mm), one of which features 3 flaps that change the scene. Together with a copy of the US first edition of the completed book in the original pink boards and pictorial dust jacket. Extremities slightly rubbed and bumped, a few small nicks and light creases to wrappers of Volume I. An excellent set with bright and crisp watercolour drawings. While the published book conveys Goodall (1908 - 1996)'s inventive approach to the picture book format, it fails to fully transmit the delicate lines and colouring of the artist's lively illustrations, as evident in the current manuscript.
