        Original poem, 1975

N.p.: N.p., 1975. A lengthy original poem written by Captain Beefheart on the back of a concert poster, signed "Don Van Vliet '75," with a drawing of a cartoon foot surrounded by musical notes. A letter of provenance from music writer and label executive Bill Bentley explains: "In 1975 I interviewed Captain Beefheart at the Armadillo World Headquarters for the Austin [Texas] Sun. Beefheart was appearing there with Frank Zappa's band, recording a live album [Bongo Fury]. After the interview I asked Captain Beefheart to draw me a picture, since he was doodling as we spoke. He got a poster from another Armadillo show and on the back quickly wrote out this poem. The words flowed out of him spontaneously. He signed it and handed it to me, and then took it back. He added at the end, "Progress is Chanel No. 5 on the rocks," and then drew a foot around those words with notes circling it. He called it his "footnote." As I got ready to leave, I started to fold the poster. He said very loudly, "No!" He took it from me and rolled it up before handing it back, and said "Some day you'll thank me." He didn't want me to crease the poster, knowing it would adversely affect the value. We ran the poem along with the interview shortly after in the Austin Sun." Executed in holograph ink on the blank verso of an Armadillo Productions poster advertising the bands Greezy Wheels and the Doak Sneek Band. 11.5 x 17.5 inches. Very Good plus with some tape bruising along the left edge of the verso and small chip at the top right edge of same.

A Fine Day / Hareta Hi

Heibon-sha 1975 - 4to.; illustrated throughout in black-and-white and color; publisher note laid-in; gray endpapers; black leatherette boards stamped in gold; original acetate dust-jacket with small chips to bottom edge; very slight foxing to last page. As one of the best-known commercial photographers in Japan, who also gained notoriety for a series of shocking photographs of writer Yukio Mishima, Kishin Shinoyama masterful creates cinematic-like sequences from the mundane and ordinary. Composed from numerous double page full-bleeds in rich saturated colors, Shinoyama's A Fine Day / Hareta Hi presents a rich visual experience that encapsulates both the intensities and subtleties of contemporary Japanese culture. Covering a broad range of subjects, from arresting landscapes to theatrical portraits of politicians, Shinoyama astutely combines the journalistic and the personal into a unique and highly subjective vision of postwar Japan. A scarce book and almost certainly one of Shinoyama's best. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Lansky is pleased that the federal prosecutor ?that set out to frame me? has been ?fired ? He may have violated the law in his zealous attempt to prosecute people?? ? Lansky wants ?a picture of him, I have a good place to put it??

"Autograph Letter Signed ?Shalom / Meyer,? 1.5 pages, 8? x 10?, separate sheets. [Miami], April 2, 1975. To Yushki, his friend Joseph Sheiner, a member of the Israeli Security Agency. Two loose-leaf holes at right edge, staple holes in upper right corners. Verso of second page is toned from 1975 newspaper clippings which are present. Fine condition. In part, ?No doubt the big talk in Israel as in U.S. is Kissinger. His failure in the negotiations doesn?t bring any of us joy but peace at his price hadn?t anything to offer for the future. We know Mr. Kissinger much better now. I could never understand what he and Nixion called peace in Vietnam; it was as plain as the nose on your face, that N.V. was going to take over. Why we still want to back this load of grafters in the S.V. I will never understand. I wish the attack on S.V. didn?t occur right now it would be better for us if this didn?t exist...?This article should interest you. This is the District Attorney that set out to frame me. He is the one who had my picture over his desk. I asked Dave to ask McMillan for a picture of him, I have a good place to put it. He is fired but he will be given a chance to resign although he may have violated the law in his zealous attemp to prosecute people...?Meyer Lansky went to Israel in 1970 to avoid federal prosecution on charges of tax evasion. In December, he requested Israeli citizenship under Israel?s Law of Return which gives any Jew the right to be granted Israeli citizenship. However, it denies citizenship to a Jew ?with a criminal past, likely to endanger the public welfare.? In March 1971, Lansky was charged with being involved in a conspiracy to skim from the Flamingo Hotel, his old Las Vegas venture with Bugsy Siegel and was ordered to appear before a grand jury in Miami. He stayed in Israel. In May, Lansky?s U.S. passport was revoked and in September, his application for Israeli citizenship was denied. ?Meyer Lansky v. the State of Israel? was heard before the Israeli Supreme Court and on September 11, 1972, the court ruled unanimously against Lansky. After trying to find refuge outside the United States with Sheiner?s help ?" he was with Lansky on his 36-hour flight seeking asylum ?" on November 7, 1972, Meyer Lansky returned to Miami and was promptly arrested by FBI agents aboard the plane. The March 28, 1975, article Meyer Lansky sent Yushki about McMillan is present. The banner headline right under ?The Miami Herald? masthead: ?Dade Crime Strike Chief Shifted.? Dougald McMillan had headed the Justice Department?s Organized Crime Strike Force in Miami since 1969. Because of recent disclosures about tactics McMillan had used in his intelligence-gathering effort aimed at Miami public officials suspected of corruption, McMillan was being transferred to Washington. The article mentions Lansky: ?It was McMillan who in 1973 obtained a contempt conviction against Lansky for the aging mobster?s refusal to appear before a grand jury ?" only to have the Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals reverse it...?"

High School Yearbook]: 1975 Kalibarb: The Kalibre [bound with several issues of] The Barblet

DeKalb High School, DeKalb, IL 1975 - First and only edition. Screwbound printed yellow binder. Quarto. The wrapperbound yearbook, *The Kalibre*, bound with ten of twelve possible issues of the school newspaper, *The Barblet* (lacking issues seven and ten), for author Richard Powers's (here referred to mostly as Rick Powers) senior year of high school. Slight tears in the yellow cloth binder, some pages well-thumbed, student inscriptions in the yearbook, and a couple of leaves loose but sound, a very good example. Powers is pictured on at least three pages in the yearbook, twice in band pictures, and once in the National Honor Society, although curiously, he is not represented by a senior class picture. According to biographies of Powers he spent much of his high school time in Thailand, and only returned to DeKalb to finish high school, and was perhaps thus not present for the photo. He also appears at least three times in the issues of *The Barblet,* twice playing the cello, and once at a National Honor Society Assembly (we have by no means exhaustively searched the bound volume and may have missed other appearances). According to our research, Powers is the second most important graduate of the high school, after supermodel Cindy Crawford. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
