The Legend of King Kong (Original screenplay for an unproduced Universal film version)

Universal City, CA: Universal Pictures, 1975. Final draft script for the unproduced 1976 Universal film. Also laid in is an interoffice memo from Murray Weissman to Marshall Green, CC'd to a large number of crewmembers including PR manager Kenny Carter, that emphasizes the need to keep photography on the set very tightly controlled. With both major studios developing a Kong movie simultaneously, Paramount and producer Dino De Laurentis successfully sued Universal to prevent them from making their rendition of the film, arguing that Paramount alone had rights to the story. Although Universal agreed to set aside their plans for "King Kong" for at least six months, the project would not be picked up again until 1996, when Peter Jackson would scrap Bo Goldman's script in favor of his own. Goldman won an Academy Award for his work on the 1975 Milos Forman adaptation of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" starring Jack Nicholson, and later wrote the 1992 film "Scent of a Woman," and 1998 film "Meet Joe Black." Though not without the occasional bias, we refrain from speculation as to which of the scripts may have had the most cinematic merit. Red studio wrappers, noted as Final Draft and production No. 02087 on the front wrapper, dated December 10, 1975. Title page present, with credit for screenwriter Goldman. 133 leaves on pale green stock, mimeograph. Pages Near Fine, wrapper Near Fine, bound with three gold brads.

        L'homme aux valises.

Paris: Gallimard,, 1975. Suivi de Ce formidable bordel! (nouvelle édition). Octavo. Original cream light card wraps printed in red and black. Together with two foolscap typed letters (300 × 210 mm), the first dated on copy paper, the second on wove paper. Spine creased as usual, a few faint markings to front panel and light crease to upper outer corner of rear. A very good copy. Letters neatly creased where folded, the first with a few discreet uses of corrective fluid, the second very slightly nicked at upper left corner and negligibly marked with very faint spotting along inner edge recto and verso: very good condition overall. First edition thus, first impression. Out-of-series copy from an edition of 55, inscribed by the author "A H. Gene Blocker, avec toute ma sympathie, Eugène Ionesco" on the half-title, together with two typed letters signed from Ionesco to Blocker, Associate Professor of Philosophy at Ohio University, discussing the possibility of a lecture series in the United States. In the first letter, dated 18 December 1975, Ionesco politely declines Blocker's invitation: "Unfortunately, my command of English doesn't allow me to do a lecture in English. I just read some easy texts and I understand a little English language but I don't speak English at all. So, I think that my visit to the States wouldn't be of any interest." The second letter, dated 29 December, reveals a volte-face. Ionesco, having since received a letter dated 12 December, now writes in French thanking Blocker for the "great honour" of his invitation, which he is professedly keen to accept and hopes to use in order to lecture on the "so-called" Theatre of the Absurd and issues of intellectual freedom in Europe, though he repeats the caveat that his inability to speak English might prove a "major inconvenience", and adds that the proposed stay of two semesters would be too long. He also encloses a copy of his "two latest plays, of which the first has been translated into English as "A Hell of a Mess", the second as yet untranslated". "A Hell of a Mess" was the American title of Ce formidable bordel, first published in 1973 (L'homme aux valises previously unpublished).

        Bricklin II Concept Art

1975. Mixed media on paper. Signed, dated, and numbered "#02" Alexander Sarantos Tremulis (1914-1991) was the designer of the production version of the 1948 Tucker Torpedo and was America's most original design theorist of the post-war era. He was born in Chicago and without any training in drawing or engineering joined the design team of Auburn-Cord-Duesenberg in 1933. He was chief stylist when the company failed in 1937. He worked for GM, Chrysler and Custom Motors in Beverly Hills, which designed unique cars for movie stars. During World War II, he worked for the Air Force designing aircraft, and in the process drew what may have been the first visualizations of extra-terrestrial transport: flying saucers. After the war, Tremulis worked with Preston Tucker, and later for Ford. He formed his own consulting firm in the 1960's. This quite beautiful design and other similar ones were made for the ill-fated Bricklin car company, which existed from 1974 to 1976, and whose demise had nothing to do with Tremulis's designs. He was inducted into the Automotive Hall of Fame in 1982.

The Seen (First Edition, inscribed to Robert Creeley in the year of publication, with original mailing envelope)

San Francisco: Pasteurize Press / Zephyrus Image, 1975. First Edition. First Edition. An offprint of Brakhage's remarks following a screening of his film, "The Text of Light," at the San Francisco Art Institute, Nov 18, 1974. This copy inscribed to Brakhage's friend, poet Robert Creeley and Creeley's wife on the verso of the title page: "For Bob and Bobby / Best memories ever / Blessings, Stan." With the original mailing envelope, postmarked October 24, 1975, hand-addressed by Brakhage. Brakhage has also tipped on a small image of a projector at the rear of the envelope.Johnston's entry for this title notes "After the film screened at Canyon Cinematheque in 1975, Holbrook Teter of Zephyrus Image decided to publish a transcript of Brakhage's accompanying talk. Teter said: 'Stan Brakhage showed a movie of light refracted in a glass ashtray. You couldn't tell it was an ashtray. The whole movie was just the shifting light in the ashtray for a very lengthy time. After he showed the movie he talked about his own life and development as an artist and what he had to say was so turned on, so accurate and beautiful. Somebody had taped it so we transcribed it and put out the book.'" "Teter originally proposed the title "Seeing is Believing" which Brakhage rejected as having religious connotations and 'then anyway my concern is to pry words such as 'seeing' FREE from those traditional associations of it which would limit a person.'""Upon reviewing the tape to proof-read his first galley, Teter found that the Cinematheque transcriber had edited rather wildly, leaving out chunks and had even interpolated parts from another Brakhage speech at the University of California Berkeley's Pacific Film Archive. Teter re-transcribed the speech, and "The Seen" first appeared in print in late 1975." Brakhage was thrilled, and wrote in a letter to Teter, "Bless you for this beauty," and said that of all the books that had been inspired from his films, that Teter's was "easily the most beautiful of all." The Criterion Collection released a collection of 26 key works by Brakhage, titled "By Brakhage," in 2003, allowing frame-by-frame digital examination of his work for the first time. In 2010, Criterion released a second volume, curated by his wife, with an additional 30 films.Fine in saddle-stitched, reflective wrappers with a clear thin mylar wrapper bound just inside the printed wrapper, as called for in the Zephyrus Image bibliography by Alastair Johnston.

FIRST & ONLY SUPERB EDITION RARE !. The most superb and comprehensive reference ever done on Shin Hanga. It contains a total of 834 fine color plates, most of which are full size and in true to the original color. Each volume has an English index, with artist name, title, dimensions, technique & date listed. The on-board index shows English or romanized names of the artists and details of the print, the balance of text is in Japanese. * This substantial and major resource depicts the work of Japan's greatest Shin Hanga artists, listing hundreds of artists both foreign & Japanese. Including: Inoue, Bigot, Kobayashi, Ishii, Oda, Okamoto, Sakamoto, Goyo Hashiguchi, H. Yamamoto, Yoshida, Ito Shinsui, Kawase Hasui, S. Natori, Yumeiji Takehisa, Hasegawa, Maekawa, Onchi, Maeda and Sekino. Also Kitaoka, Mori, K. Saito, Munakata, Torii, Jacoulet, Torii Kotondo and many other artists yet to be discovered by the West. . * An exceptionally important and valuable reference source book, illustrating the modern century of Japanese woodblock printing. An essential tool for any serious collector, student, reference library, museum and lover of Japanese prints. Because this is the one and only edition, and has been long out-of print, it is always RARE and is extremely difficult to find.         Typed draft page annotated

1975 - HALEY, Alex. Typed draft page annotated. No place, circa 1975. Single sheet of goldenrod paper measuring 8-1/2 by 11 inches; matted and framed with photographic image from Roots, entire piece measures 14 by 24 inches. $3800.Rare typed page from an early book draft of Roots heavily annotated in green felt-tip marker in Alex Haley’s own hand, handsomely matted and framed with a photographic group portrait from the movie set of the Roots miniseries. This typed page is from an early draft of Alex Haley’s Roots, one of the most popular works of African-American historical fiction ever written. Alex Haley has heavily annotated in his own hand in green felt-tip marker. The page details the changes Haley made to the conversation between Miss Malizy and the slave Kizzy, a scene which occurs when Kizzy is first separated from her parents and sold to her new owner. “Haley’s most celebrated novel, Roots, has been compared to both Moby Dick and War and Peace. The Washington Post called it the most highly acclaimed book of our time… The author immediately became a household name, as he won over 270 awards. A phenomenon of the decade, Roots mesmerized Americans and readers of literature throughout the world. No novel since the publications of Uncle Tom’s Cabin and Gone With the Wind captured the public interest on the subject of slavery and its ramifications… In Roots Haley successfully traced his ancestors with a birth in 1750 in Gambia, through oral history with painstaking research and thereby put into perspective the historical background of millions of other African Americans… Haley’s 12 years of work on Roots won him a special Pulitzer prize on April 18, 1977” (Blockson 3939).         Fundació Joan Miró. Centre d\'Estudis d\'Art Contemporani. Parc de Montjuic, Barcelona. Exposició d\'obertura. Juny de 1975

Barcelona, Druck: La Poligrafia S.A., 1975. 1. Joan Miró i Ferrà (* 20. April 1893 in Barcelona; † 25. Stockholm: P.A. Norstedt & Soner, 1904.

"First edition, extremely rare offprint issue, inscribed by the author to Fredholm, of von Koch's paper, which contains the first examples of geometric fractals, the famous 'Koch curve' and 'Koch snowflake'. The term 'fractal' was coined much later, by Benoit Mandelbrot in his 1975 book <i>Les objets fractals, forme, hasard et dimension</i>. A fractal is an object that displays 'self-similarity' on all scales; it need not exhibit <i>exactly</i> the same structure at all scales, but the same 'type' of structures must appear on all scales. A fractal should also have a 'dimension' that is not a whole number, unlike a line (dimension 1) or a plane (dimension 2). Today fractals have found a bewildering variety of applications in both the arts and sciences (fractal patterns have been found in the works of Jackson Pollock).<br/><br/> The first example of a fractal was the 'Cantor set,' introduced by Georg Cantor (1845-1918) in 1883. This set is obtained by starting with a line segment and then removing the middle third, leaving two shorter line segments; then one removes the middle third of each of these two segments; iterating the process indefinitely results in the Cantor set, an infinite set of points that is 'self-similar,' in the sense that if one magnifies a section of the set, one obtains the whole set again. The Cantor set is not really a curve: it is an infinite set of points, but is 'countable', like the whole numbers 1,2,3,..., but unlike the original line segment whose points cannot be 'counted' in this way (a fact that was also proved by Cantor). In this sense the Cantor set cannot be regarded as a geometric fractal. <br/><br/> Koch modified Cantor's construction to obtain a genuine curve. The Koch curve is constructed by starting with a straight line segment, erecting an equilateral triangle with base the middle third of the original segment, and then erasing that middle third. ". Offprint from Arkiv för matematik 1 (1904). 8vo (215 x 139 mm), pp. 681-704. Original printed wrappers, a little chipping with small loss to left upper corner and lower right

        Remarks for Crime Message Briefing

1975 - FORD, Gerald R. Remarks for Crime Message Briefing. Washington: White House Editorial Office, 1975. Original typescript, consisting of a cover sheet and six one-sided pages. Housed in a custom clamshell box. $6500.Original typewritten final version of President Fordâ&#128;&#153;s opening statement for his press conference regarding the Special Message to Congress on Crime, with substantive autograph emendations incorporated into the text. Copy belonging to speechwriter Paul A. Theis.Gerald Ford served as President during one of the most volatile periods of American history. He was faced with the aftermath of the Watergate scandal and the military withdrawal from Vietnam. On top of that, the nation was experiencing run-away inflation, 7.5% unemployment, a crisis in energy, and an increased rate in crime. On June 19, 1975, Ford held a press conference to announce his proposal to Congress of a â&#128;&#156;program for curbing crime and ensuring domestic tranquility.â&#128;&#157; This final version of his remarks contains substantive autograph changes by the President, especially regarding the legal rights of victims: â&#128;&#156;For too long the law has centered its attention more on the rights of the criminal than on the victim of the crime. It is high time we reversed this trend and put the highest priority on the victims and potential victims of crime.â&#128;&#157; On the question of gun control, Ford positions himself as â&#128;&#156;unalterably opposed to federal registration of guns or gun owners. I do propose that the Congress enact legislation to deal with handguns for criminal purposes. I also propose further federal restrictions on so-called Saturday night specials.â&#128;&#157; The former owner of this original typescript, speechwriter Paul Theis, came to the White House from the Republican National Congressional Committee, where he directed public relations activities. He served as Executive Editor in the White House Editorial Office from 1974 to 1976, which included heading up the White House speechwriting unit. Theis oversaw the production of about 12 major speeches per month for Ford.A bit of paper-clip rust on a few sheets. A historic presidential document in near-fine condition.         Hollywood Babylon.

San Francisco: Straight Arrow Books,, 1975. Quarto. Original gold metallic boards, titles to front board and spine in black, illustrated endpapers. With the dust jacket. Illustrated throughout with photographs. A fine copy in the jacket with lightly rubbed and nicked extremities. First edition, first printing. The book details the scandals of many Hollywood stars from the 1900s to the 1950s, and was banned ten days after its release in the US. Upon its second release in 1975, The New York Times said of it, "If a book such as this can be said to have charm, it lies in the fact that here is a book without one single redeeming merit." Laid-in are three typed letters, signed by the actress Frances Farmer to a fan, politely declining his attentions and requests for interviews. The book includes a chapter on Farmer, "Daughter of Fury: Frances, Saint." An American actress, she is today better known for for sensationalized accounts of her life (including baseless allegations of a lobotomy), her alcoholism, and her involuntary commitment to a psychiatric hospital.

The Man Who Fell to Earth (Original screenplay for the 1976 film, producer Si Litvinoff's working copy)

London: British Lion Film, 1975. Draft script for the 1976 film. Copy belonging to producer Si Litvinoff, with his name in black holograph ink to the title page, and his detailed holograph notations throughout, including substantive changes to scenes and dialogue. Also included in a very detailed, 25-page budget for the film, broken down by scene, with nearly every page profusely annotated and corrected in red holograph ink. "The Man Who Fell to Earth," now viewed as one of the seminal science fiction films of the 1970s, is one of the few films from that era that successfully transplanted a rock musician to a new context (though certainly Bowie had been camera-ready for most of his career). Roeg managed to take the relatively straightforward novel by Walter Tevis and impose a wide array of new political and philosophical subtexts, effectively making the film more similar than anything else to Heinlein's "Stranger in a Strange Land," wherein an alien from another planet comes to earth with a specific mission, only to be overwhelmed with unexpected obstacles and distractions. In Roeg's interpretation, Bowie arrives on earth determined to bring water to his dying home planet, only to become addicted to alcohol and television, and ultimately remains trapped due to his own limitations and the efforts of a paranoid government to prevent his return. Maroon studio wrappers with a die-cut title window in the British style. Title page present, noted in holograph pencil as copy No. 116. XXX leaves, mechanically reproduced, with pink and blue revision pages dated variously between xxx and xxx. Pages and wrapper Very Good plus, bound internally with two silver brads.
