A Letter for Queen Victoria: An Opera (Original poster for the 1975 opera)

La Rochelle, France, 1975. Original poster for the 1975 stream-of-consciousness opera directed by Robert Wilson, for its debut in La Rochelle, France in 1975. Known for his deep concern for the use of language in his work, this piece is characteristic of Wilson's explicit attention to detail. In the play, the drop behind the set is completely covered in words printed in capital letters, and the actors speak frequently in chaotic instances of phonetic wordplay. 39.5 x 27 inches, rolled. A few edge creases and short closed tears at the extremities, else Fine.

        Proofs: Laura's birth announcement.

[Mt. Horeb, WI]: Perishable Press 8vo (26.7 cm, 10.5"). [10] ff.; illus.. 1975 Unusual and interesting ephemera, offering some insight into the design and printing process of the proprietor of the Perishable Press, as well as a nice example of his inimitably quirky style: 10 proofsheets of Hamady's announcement of his daughter Laura's birth, reflecting the printer's experimentations with layout and color as well as his personal joy. Some of these proofsheets bear editorial marks in red ink, while one has the "Printer's Devil" header on an affixed slip of paper; several have the text printed in variant color schemes. The sheets are printed on Plover Fineweave paper with the text set in Sabon Antiqua. At the head of each is a print of a nicely rendered pen-and-ink drawing of the Hamady farm (where "Mother Father & Daughter are well and thriving"), done by Jack Beal ("Laura's Uncle Jack"). Sheets laid into a manila envelope labelled in Hamady's handwriting. Clean and crisp; some pages with markings as above.

[Photo Album]: Photograph Album of Motorcycles

(Columbus, Ohio). [circa 1975]. Quarto. Measuring approximately 12" x 10". Spiral bound padded commercial album with floral print polyester covered boards. Ten leaves, each with photographs mounted on verso and recto for a total of 80 color snapshots, each measuring 4.5" x 3.5". Small dent to outer edge of the rear board, affecting edges of the final two leaves, otherwise clean and well preserved, else fine. Diverse assembly of mid-1970s motorcycle and bike culture images. Based on internal evidence the images were most likely captured during and around the 1975 Charity Newsies Motorcycle Race. Held annually on the half-mile oval dirt track at the Ohio State Fairgrounds in Columbus, Ohio from 1939-1980, the American Motorcycle Association sanctioned 100-lap event was considered one of the premiere stops on the United States flat track motorcycle racing circuit. The event often drew a crowd of more than 20,000. In 1981 it was discontinued after repeated annual reports of public drunkenness and illegal drag racing among the spectators in the days leading up to the race. The 1970 event was prominently featured in the Academy Award nominated film On Any Sunday, a documentary produced by Bruce Brown and Steve McQueen. In 1990 the racing grandstand shown here was condemned and the track razed. Among the 80 images are many detailed shots of choppers, trikes, and lots of tricked-out, custom paint jobs. Japanese and American bikes are given near equal time by the photographer and the relaxed spectator images seem to belie the image of the Charity Newsies attendees which led to the race's demise. .

HIGH RISE (Pristine Signed First Edition)

Jonathan Cape, UK 1975 - Back when Ballard's EMPIRE OF THE SUN was nominated for the Booker Award - was the favourite, in fact - most pundits saw the book's victory as a foregone conclusion. To this day people refer to "Empire" as the Booker winner. Sadly, it did not win. It should have won, but it didn't. Perhaps it isn't so surprising, as the panels for most of these awards are composed of corpses, compost heaps, poseurs and the occasional automaton. C'est la vie. This is a pristine, unread copy boasting immaculate black boards, a spine as tight and perfect as as a lush during a glorious weekend of drunken stupor clean, crisp and untouched pages so white that village idiots around the world run shrieking from their celestial purity and a dustjacket whose perfection assaults those who view it boldy with taunts like "I'm fit, I'm fit, Josef Stalin was a git". 5100 gr. Schlagworte: Architektur - Geschichte [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Bound for Glory (Original screenplay for the 1976 film, signed by David Carradine)

Los Angeles: United Artists / The Bound for Glory Company, 1975. Revised script for the 1976 film, "Bound for Glory," directed by Hal Ashby, based on the autobiography of Woody Guthrie, written for the screen by Robert Getchell, and starring Robert Getchell (screenwriter); David Carradine, Ronny Cox, Melinda Dillon, and Randy Quaid. SIGNED by David Carradine on the title page: "This land is your land / David Carradine / [drawing of the yin and yang symbol]." Unsurprisingly, director Hal Ashby's version of Woody Guthrie is a complex one, showing the legendary proletarian singer and activist as a man with contradictory virtues and faults. Drawing from a pivotal few years detailed in Guthrie's autobiography of the same name, the film follows Guthrie's initial migration west to escape the dust bowl, his discovery of the plight of migrant workers in the west, his important encounter with singer Ozark Bole, and his subsequent (and problematic) reunion with his family. Winner of the Academy Awards for Best Cinematography and Best Music, and nominated for 4 others, including Best Picture and Best Screenplay. Brown titled wrappers, stamped with only the title on the front wrapper. Title page present, with a credit for screenwriter Getchell, noted as REVISED, and dated August 11, 1975. 129 leaves, mechanically reproduced. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with two gold brads.

Die buddhistische Spätantike in Mittelasien. Ergebnisse der Kgl. Preussischen Turfan-Expeditionen.

Berlin, Dietrich Reimer, 1922-1933 [facsimile: Graz, Akademische Druck- und Verlagsanstalt, 1973-1975]. - 6 text volumes and 1 atlas. 35,5 x 26 cm; atlas 54 x 36,5 cm. 29; 62; 53; 29; 32; 89; 80 pp. With a total of 185 plates in the text volumes, 22 plates in the atlas volume, mostly in black and white, some in colour, and numerous illustrations in text. Uniform decorated brown cloth. Reprint of a work on archeology in China, published in the years 1922-1933, written by the German orientalist and archaeologist Albert von Le Coq (1860-1930). From 1902 to 1914, Le Coq led three of the four German expeditions to the Turfan (or Turpan) area, in Xingjian, China. The expeditions were initiated by the German archaeologist Albert Grünwedel. "The principal spoils of these expeditions were literary. Vast numbers of Chinese manuscripts were obtained from every center, both secular and religious. Besides securing manuscripts, these expeditions examined caves decorated with stucco figures and with frescoes " (Couling). The text gives a brief history of the expeditions, the different sites they excavated, including grottoes and temples, which are also shown on some of the smaller illustrations, followed by descriptions of the objects shown on the plates. "The civilization thus revealed is a mixture of Persian, Indian, Chinese, Hellenic etc." (Couling). Both Grünwedel and Le Coq went back to Berlin with thousands of artefacts, of which many are shown in the plates. The second volume, titled Die Manichaeischen Miniaturen, deals with fragments of illuminated manuscripts, the other volumes deal mainly with either sculpture, mural paintings or frescoes and their techniques. The fourth expedition ended early due to the outbreak of the First World War, but compared to the earlier expeditions they collected the most artefacts during this short stay. - All volumes in very good condition. Cf. Couling, pp. 32, 578.
