Austerity Binge. Original artwork for the dust wrapper of Bevis Hillier's Austerity Binge.

Mounted, framed and glazed, 330 x 630mm in frame. A rough and a final draft of the artwork for the dust wrapper of Austerity Binge. Mounted with a manuscript caption by Bevis Hillier. Bevis Hillier in an article for the Spectator wrote: "The best, gaudiest jacket ever designed for a book of mine was again by the Bentley-Farrell-Burnett team, for my Austerity/Binge (1975), about the decorative arts of the 1940s and 50s. Perhaps some will merely see it as further evidence that the Seventies were 'the decade that taste forgot'; but massed copies made a great polychrome splash in the windows of Hatchard's and other bookshops: and I think that Peter Bentley, the chief designer of this jacket, showed outstanding skill in transmuting post-war motifs into something unmistakably of the later decade to which it belongs." Bentley-Farrell-Burnett were employed by Penguin to design the covers for their Evelyn Waugh paperbacks. They also designed LP sleeves for the likes of Tyrannosaurus Rex.

        Transport in plants.

Berlin, Heidelberg, New York, Springer,1975/85. New Series. 18 vol. in 26 books. 25 x 17 cm. Kunstleder. Leatherette tape. Encyclopedia of plant physiology ; Vol. 1 - 18. Sehr gut erhalten. In top condition. From the contents; When Wilhelm Ruhland developed his plan for an Encyclopedia of Plant Physiology more than three decades ago, biology could still be conveniently subdivided into classical areas. Even within plant physiology, subdivisions were not too difficult to make, and general principles could be covered sufficiently in the two introductory volumes of the Encyclopedia on the physical basis of cell biology. But the situation changed even during the 12-year publication period of the Encyclopedia (1955-1967). The new molecular direction of genetics and structural research on biopolymers had an integrating effect on all other biological fields, including plant physiology, and it became increasingly difficult to keep previously distinct areas separated. Ruhlands overall plan included 18 volumes and about 22,000 pages. The new series has 2 more books, one of them is the General Register. ( still available as an E-book or in soft cover). We offer a library set in top condition with a library label on spine an inside (only on the back side of the titel) with the usual library stamps.       Deutsch, (London) 1975 - A novel set in an unidentified post-colonial Caribbean island, based on the author's native Trinidad, which the New York Times Book Review called the best novel of the year, and which was the Nobel Prize winner's "breakthrough" book in terms of his dealing with political, social, and personal issues in a critical, fully mature, and nuanced way: no one else was writing about these kinds of ethnically-driven political and social issues with the personal experience, insight, critical capacity and articulateness of Naipaul up to that time, wherein every cultural assumption was called into question and subject to critical scrutiny, and neither the status quo nor its politically correct inverse was allowed to go unexamined and unremarked upon. This is the uncorrected proof copy of the first edition, issued in the UK and dated the 21st of February, 1975. Spine slanted, and title and author written on the spine in red ink. A near fine copy of an extremely uncommon proof of a milestone book in the author's career, which may be seen as putting him fully onto the trajectory that led to the Nobel. Includes original printed outer box. Photographs by Mike Mandel. Texts, statistics and quotes by the respective artists printed on verso (e.g., Ed Ruscha: "Everything you've ever wanted is right in your own backyard;" Bobby Heinecken: ".Critics often misspell his last name, hence he is often mistaken for the European beer player.").Each card 3-1/2 x 2-1/2 inches. Lithographic reproductions printed by Mike Roberts, Berkeley, California. The cards were packaged with sticks of chewing gum by Topps Chewing Gum, Brooklyn, New York. In 1975, Mike Mandel traveled around the U.S. with baseball equipment and uniforms to produce a series of portraits of important and influential photographers, curators, art historians and critics. The resulting cards were, and still are, traded by those in the field. Out of print. Unopened packs, particularly with uncracked sticks of gum, are very rare. I photographed photographers as if they were baseball players and produced a set of cards that were packaged in random groups of ten, with bubble gum, so that the only way of collecting a complete set was to make a trade. The reverse side for each card enabled the photographer to fill in their own personal data that referred to the information usually included on real baseball cards. In a sense, each photographer's response provides an insight about how they approached their participation."From Aaron Schuman, writing in Aperture 200 (Fall 2010): "Mandel's Trading Cards sit comfortably within this movement [the conceptual experimentation "with popular rather than 'artistic' forms of photography" practiced by such artists as Ed Ruscha, John Baldessari and Stephen Shore] -- the half-ironic, half-sincere reappropriation of everyday images and photographic contexts -- and also reflect an almost exaggerated unpretentiousness through the performances of many of their subjects.A baby-faced Larry Sultan (#13) is satirically pious as an altar boy, his two hands clasped around a baseball, his wide eyes aimed toward the heavens; a grinning Beaumont Newhall (#103) is subsumed by a face-mask and chest protector, jokingly playing the umpire-in-chief behind home plate; on the back of her card, Joyce Neimanas (#37) proclaims: 'You should bunt to sacrifice yourself to the runner'; and on [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

Longing for Dakness (personally enhanced by Peter Beard)

Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, New York 1975 - Harcourt Brace Jovanovich. 1975. New York. Un-paginated but probably around 300 pages. First Edition, first printing with First Edition statement and the letter line BCDE signifying a 1st printing. 1st issue DJ with $19.95 price intact on DJ flap. This is an INCREDIBLE book that is nothing shy of a personalized piece of artwork by the legendary, magical Peter Beard. This very edition is "enhanced" as Mr. Beard would say. Peter Beard has thoroughly personalized this edition with added ink inscription, illustrations, annotations, highlights and fingerprint. There are so many little gifts that Mr. Beard has added that I may have missed some but so far.The book begins with a 2 page red ink drawing by Peter Beard that shows 2 crocodiles swimming in front of a small mountain range or hills. Also in the water is a swimmer in distress with a bubble caption that reads: ___ ___ at Christmas 1980: Hurry over to "Hoggers" while there's still time! Atop the bubble caption Mr. Beard also drew a vulture. Also illustrated is a tent/camp with a flag stating "Hog Ranch". Also pictured is a large warthog flanking 2 baby warthogs. There is a palm tree and a sun waving as it falls behind the hill. Mr. Beard then added: Merry & Happy with 2 hearts with faces and the 3rd heart begins the letter P in Peter and then adds (Beard) in parenthesis. Dated Decem. 19th, '80. As you turn the pages, Mr. Beard added his legendary Montauk address and his old alpha numeric phone numbers as used in the late 1960's and earlier. A few pages later, at the end of Mr. Beard's introduction he signed the book once again, this time with his fingerprint and dated it 12/19/80 and added a special touch to a warthog's tail. Other enhancement's include in Ch. 1: Illustrated blood on paws of animal. Blood coming out of abdomen and on stick of an impaled figure. Ch. 2: added "general chui" Ndongoro under drawing. Ch. 4: added 1921 atop a 2 page photo of Karen Blixen's farm. Ch. 9: atop a 2 page photo he added "Starvo" Natl. Park 1960 - PB (on the athi-Tiva). This proves to be an interesting glimpse into Mr. Beard's thinking at the time because the park is actually called Tsavo, not Starvo. Ironically, just 2 days prior to Mr. Beard enhancing this book, he penned his now famous controversial letter in response to a segment on the news show 60 Minutes. The letter dated 12/17/80 (two days before he enhanced this book!) Peter Beard addresses an expose that 60 minutes ran on african poachers that they claim are responsible for the dying off of wildlife. Mr. Beard in turn provides a controversial correction to the story and claims that overpopulation and mismanagement of foreign interests, not indigenous activities such as local hunting tribes imprisoned for poaching, as being responsible for a population that has gone unchecked and the habitat is destroyed as a result. His point is in order to save the wildlife, you must save the habitat which preserves the food supply. Instead due to outside interference and "preservation efforts" the wildlife is literally starving to death. As a result, this is an incredible glimpse into the mind of Mr. Beard as he labels Tsavo, Starvo. His letter to 60 Minutes can be found in another incredible piece produced by Mr. Beard. The End of the Game. This is touched upon on pages 276-278 of the 2008 edition. Ch. 12: added volcano spout. Adds 2 asterisks next to "I am given a hit by her hand". Color in the picture titled "A snake from the flowers". Ch. 13: Identified a picture of hunter Thomas Dinesen 1921. Blood coming out of an animal from a spear. Ch. 14: Bird pecking food. trails of footsteps from a walking animal. Ch. 15: trails of footsteps of a grasshopper. In the fables section, the fable titled Monkey & Lion, the crowns that two monkeys are wearing have been colored in. Out of Africa date 1915 is underlined. These are some of the enhancements that I picked up going through this book. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

(London): Deutsch. (1975). A novel set in an unidentified post-colonial Caribbean island, based on the author's native Trinidad, which the New York Times Book Review called the best novel of the year, and which was the Nobel Prize winner's "breakthrough" book in terms of his dealing with political, social, and personal issues in a critical, fully mature, and nuanced way: no one else was writing about these kinds of ethnically-driven political and social issues with the personal experience, insight, critical capacity and articulateness of Naipaul up to that time, wherein every cultural assumption was called into question and subject to critical scrutiny, and neither the status quo nor its politically correct inverse was allowed to go unexamined and unremarked upon. First Edition. Softcover.
