J.R.R. Tolkien
USA: Houghton Mifflin, 1973. New. For sale here are new, true second edition copies of The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings. These books were given to my father by The Bookbinder: A. Horowitz and Sons in The 1970's. They were the bindery that bound these books. These books have been sitting on my shelf, unopened, until I took the pictures that you see above. These books were the very first of the second printing. The first printing date of The Hobbit can be confirmed by Tolkien collectors, and is affirmed by the Library of Congress number which begins with "73". The Hobbit, which you can see in the picture above. In 1973, Houghton Mifflin began to publish a "Collectors Edition" which restored the color paintings. This was nicely bound in leatherette, and came with a nice slipcase. The only date that can be found on these is the copyright date of 1965 & 1966. This edition contains Tolkien's own color Hobbit plate drawings Green leatherette boards with border and a gilt scene in the center of the front cover. Green marbled page edges, feature Tolkien's illustrations. The slip case has an illustrated paste down. The book and slip case are new. The Lord Of The Rings was also published in 1973, Houghton Mifflin though my research has not turned up an identifying Library of Congress number. The copyright page says Collector's Edition with the copyright dates of 1965 & 1966. This is a beautiful collector's edition in slipcase, bound in red faux leather with gilded lettering and decorations on the spine and cover. This edition contains the full text of all three books-The Fellowshi … [Click Below for Full Description]

1973. Single sheet. A very impressive collection of autographs relating to one of the landmark horror films in history, 1973's "The Exorcist". On a crisp photograph of the original poster for the film are the clean, unrubbed signatures of Ellen Burstyn, Linda Blair, William Peter Blatty, William Friedkin, Kitty Winn, Mercedes McCambridge (Regan's voice), Eileen Dietz (Regan's double), Owen Roizman (the cinematographer) and Dick Smith (who did the incomparable make-up). It was one very serious and persistent autograph collector who was able over the years to build up this kind of roster of signatures. The photograph itself measures 8"x10 1/2" and. like the signatures, is clean and very presentable. Near Fine.

USUI Kaoru.; DOMON Ken introduction
1973. First and only edition. Numerous photographic plates. Japanese text. Original boards in plastic dust-jacket, and decorated slipcase (slightly stained, small dent to lower right corner), still a very good copy signed & stamped by the photographer on title. 160pp. Nagoya, Privately Printed, Usui Kaoru was born in Nagoya in 1916. He took up photography around 1933 as an amateur. From the 1930s to the 1950s Usui set up a series of amateur photography groups in Nagoya. One of these was Shu-dan 35, whose members included the young Tomatsu Shomei. Between 1950 and 1955 Usui won the annual Camera Magazine award three times, and his work was highly praised by Ken Domon. Usui's work encompassed a wide variety of styles and he was influenced by the realism of Domon Ken as well as the surrealism of Ueda Shoji, and possibly Yasui Nakaji. The present book is devided into two parts, namely the period of ARS Camera and the period of Photo Art, two publications to which he was a regular contributor. The black-and-white images are both unconventional and artificial in the best sense. C.f. Tokyo Metropolitan Museum of Photography: Nihon Shashinka Jiten - 328 Outstanding Japanese Photographers. Joseph Beuys
Napoli/Milano/Heidelberg, Modern Art Agency/Marconi/Staeck, 1973. Die Leute sind ganz prima in Foggiaî (ìLa gente Ë meravigliosa a Foggiaî). Huston, the team's Vice-President and Treasurer. The program was originally published by Harry M. Stevens, whose name is prominently featured at the bottom, and it cost 15 cents. (The editor's note on the title page: "This program is an exact reprint of the souvenir program sold at Yankee Stadium on April 18, 1923, including the same advertising copy. The Yankees defeated the Boston Red Sox, 4-1, before 74, 217 fans, a record at that time. More than 15,000 fans were turned away, according to press reports. Bob Shawkey was the starting and winning pitcher for the Yankees and Babe Ruth, appropriately, hit the only home run of the game, the first ever at Yankee Stadium."). Magazine-formatted, quarto, strong orange and black print to the covers. The 1923 original in such nice condition would be unimaginably scarce. Collectible; Very Good.

STERN, Theresa [Richard Hell and Tom Verlaine]
Dot Books, New York, 1973. 12mo. Original stiff pictorial wraps. Near fine with only the barest touches of wear at edges. Tight and sharp overall. 32pp. Hell's first book of verse (and second overall), and a very early collaboration with Verlaine, predating their work with Television. A collection of 17 poems written pseudonymously by the pair, then known as Richard Meyers and Tom Miller. As the half-title explains: "'Wanna Go Out' is a question often asked on the streets around the cheaper bars in New York and Hoboken." Stern was the pair's fictional creation, purported to be a young prostitute, the only hint to the book's true authorship being Stern's cover "portrait" (a composite image of Verlaine and Hell's faces) and the "other books from the Blank Generation" section in the rear, a reference to what would become one of Hell's best-known songs. The book would be an important event for the then Meyers, marking an early experiment in the use of stage personae that would shortly culminate in "Richard Hell." A rare and important document, linking punk to its under-appreciated literary roots. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

DOUAI - PHARMACOPOEIA]. BRISSEAU, Michel, and others.
, . . Anet (1 manuscript copy); Daems & Vandewiele, p. 93 (3 copies); Vandewiele, "La Pharmacopée de Douai en manuscrit de Michel Brisseau" in: Revue d'histoire de la pharmacie LXI, 216 (1973), pp. 340-344; WorldCat (2 copies); not in: Blake; Wellcome. Very rare first and only edition of the pharmacopoeia of the city of Douai in French Flanders. Although the city housed the second oldest university in the Low Countries, it had never before compiled its own pharmacopoeia, whereas nearby Lille had been the first city in the Southern Low Countries to do so. Compared with other pharmacopoeias, the Douai pharmacopoeia was rather conservative and even old fashioned, both in its recipes as in its use of measurements and despite being titled as "Galeno-chymica" the number of chemical formulas is quite low (cf. Vandewiele). With a contemporary owner's inscription on the title-page. Binding heavily worn and darkened due to water damage; spine damaged at the head and foot. Spotted and browned throughout and with a large damp stain in the lower margin; a fair copy.
