Erica Jong; Tom Rosenthal' Sophie Macindoe
London: N/A, 1973 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Signed by Author(s). Erica Jong: 1 TLS & annotated Proof Dustjacket; Tom Rosenthal 1 TLS with quantity carbon copy correspondence, Michael Sissons 1 TLS. Superb small archival collection relating to the publication in Britain of Jong's first novel and her masterpiece, Fear of Flying, and her 1975 poetry collection, Loveroot. Addressed to her publisher at Secker and Warburg, Tom Rosenthal, Jong's long letter is typed on her headed '20 West 77th Street' paper. The lightly annotated 350 word letter responds to Rosenthal's cover proof of Fear of Flying with some wariness: 'I cannot in honesty say that I find the cover beautiful, but I am willing to trust your publisher's judgement'. She congratulates him on his 'letter about boobs and tits. I've been talking to my poetry seminar about the lack of beautiful words for sexual acts (and organs) in English' and details her efforts to arrive at 'an invented sexual language'. Jong appends 11 corrections to her novel, some spellings as well as 'page 213 (computer belched!), spacing is completely screwed up in lines 2 and 3 of letter to Charles'. Jong ends the letter by discussing her creative state of mind post Fear of Flying. Rosenthal has initialled the letter in red with two question marks for his assistant Sophia Macindoe whose carbon copy letter in reply refuses Jong's requested corrections with a prolonged apologia: 'in the present circumstances which range from paper shortages to lack of electricity, we dare not make any changes to the schedule on Fear of Flying which would other … [Click Below for Full Description]

Wilder, Alec
S.N, 1973. Spiral-Bound Softcover. Very Good. Signed by author. Signed 'To Ginny McConnell, the best Mrs Fitzgerald there ever was or ever shall be. Alec Wilder' on inner margin of first page. McConnell's Pittsford NY address in blue ink on card taped to inside of front board. Boards a bit rubbed, minor notes on a few pages, ostensibly stage notes by McConnell herself. 1973 Spiral-Bound Softcover. 98 pp. Plastic comb binding, plain black cardstock boards. The Truth About Windmills was an opera Alec Wilder arranged in 1973, based on a libretto by Arnold Sundgaard which had previously been rejected by Schirmer. Interestingly, Wilder also insisted that the premiere of the opera be presented in Avon, New York - a suitably rural location, and the setting of his earlier Children's Plea for Peace. The original cast included William Briggs, John Maloy, Virginia McConnell, and Irene Stumberger, and was designed and directed by members of the Eastman Opera Department. Wilder was originally born in Rochester, New York, which is where this score was acquired.

Murray, Albert
University of Missouri Press, (Columbia), 1973. 8vo, 107pp; cloth. The author's third book, a collection of essays developed from a series of lectures. This is a nice presentation copy, inscribed on the title page: "For the big Q, some field notes for a definition, Al Murray." The recipient was the poet and writer Quincy Troupe. Both writers have been especially noted for their important contributions to the literature of Jazz, Murray with several works on the blues and a biography of Count Basie, and Troupe with his pair of books on Miles Davis. Faint smudge to title page, else just about fine in a very good dust jacket, with just one short closed tear and a bit of soil. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; In Dust Jacket]

New York: The Viking Press, 1973. First edition of Pynchon's National Book Award-winning novel. Octavo, original cloth. Presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "To Herb Yellin- Regards, Thomas Pynchon." The recipient Herb Yellin, was the publisher and founder of Lord John Press, considered by many to be one of the most important small presses of the 20th century. He formed a friendship with the author, Thomas Pynchon. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with some light wear to the extremities and a closed tear to the rear panel. Jacket design by Marc Getter. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Books signed and inscribed by Pynchon are one of the great rarities of twentieth century literature. Gravity's Rainbow is one of the few truly great novels of the century, and at the same time one of the most disappointing, disturbing, maddening.... One of the most original fictive styles to have been developed since Joyce" (Contemporary Novelists, 1136). It is regarded by many scholars as the greatest American novel published after the end of the second world war, and is "often considered as the postmodern novel, redefining both postmodernism and the novel in general" (Pohllman). Time named it one of its "All-Time 100 Greatest Novels", a list of the best English-language novels from 1923 to 2005.
