STERN, Theresa [Richard Hell and Tom Verlaine
Dot Books, 1973. First Edition. Wraps. 12mo. Original stiff pictorial wraps. Near fine with only the barest touches of wear at edges. Tight and sharp overall. 32pp. Near fine. Hell's first book of verse (and second overall), and a very early collaboration with Verlaine, predating their work with Television. A collection of 17 poems written pseudonymously by the pair, then known as Richard Meyers and Tom Miller. As the half-title explains: "'Wanna Go Out' is a question often asked on the streets around the cheaper bars in New York and Hoboken." Stern was the pair's fictional creation, purported to be a young prostitute, the only hint to the book's true authorship being Stern's cover "portrait" (a composite image of Verlaine and Hell's faces) and the "other books from the Blank Generation" section in the rear, a reference to what would become one of Hell's best-known songs. The book would be an important event for the then Meyers, marking an early experiment in the use of stage personae that would shortly culminate in "Richard Hell." A rare and important document, linking punk to its under-appreciated literary roots. [Attributes: First Edition]

J.G. Ballard
James Graham Ballard (1973) 'Crash', UK first edition, first printing, published by Jonathan Cape. Signed by Ballard on the title page without further inscriptions. Condition: A near fine copy with the slightest of shelf wears. Beautifil page block as shown and a visibly unread copy. The dust jacket is NOT price clipped showing the correct GBP 2.25 net price as called for. Near fine as well. 'Crash' is Ballard's best known novel and stirred up some controversty upon publication. Dealing with symphorophilia the subject matter is not easy to digest for the vast majority of readers. Thus, many reviewers called the author 'sick'. However, this was Ballard's intention as he wanted to rub humanity's worst into its own face. David Cronenberg's (1996) film adaptation stirred up the same controversy again. Starring James Spader and Holly Hunter, the movie won the Special Jury Prize at Cannes. We have more signed Ballard firsts in stock. First and Fine. [Attributes: First Edition]

James Callaghan - A House Divided - 1973 U.K. first edition published by Collins Inscribed at length to the front endpaper: "For Harold With thanks for the opportunity of "doing" Ireland, and hopes that we may have more adventures in the next Labour government; - and with appreciation of all the qualities that the press ignore, or don't know about, in your Prime Ministership. August '73. Jim Callaghan". With: 'Time and Chance', a 1987 first edition of Callaghan's autobiography, inscribed to the front endpaper: "For Harold With whom I shared so much of the contents of this book! With warm good wishes. Jim Callaghan April '87", with a page of notepaper loosely tucked in with some writing and noting of page numbers in Wilson's hand. Both books are firmly bound in slightly bumped cloth. The text blocks are a little toned and musty with minor spotting. The dust jackets are slightly rubbed and nicked to the edges. From the collection of Harold and Mary Wilson. A fantastic, and excellently provenanced, association between the three times Prime Minister, Harold Wilson and his friend, Jim Callaghan, the only person in the 20th Century to hold all four major offices of state, Chancellor of the Exchequer, Home Secretary, Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister. Both inscriptions dated, one prior to Callaghan becoming Prime Minister, referring to his and Wilson's time in office and demonstrating his respect as well as affection for Wilson, and another rather poignant inscription from a period when both were former Prime Ministers and past their political prime. Thompson, Hunter S.; Illustrations by Ralph Steadman
San Francisco: Arrow Books, 1973. First edition of the author's third book and hallmark of campaign journalism. Octavo, original black boards. Signed by Hunter Thompson on the half-title page and subjects, George McGovern, Jimmy Carter, Gary Hart and illustrator, Ralph Steadman. Fine in a near fine first issue price-clipped dust jacket with the white boarder around the photograph of Thompson and McGovern on the rear panel. The book is notable for its introduction not only to the candidates of 1972 but also its early glimpses of future political leaders. Gary Hart of Colorado, who served as McGovern's campaign manager and would later run for and win a seat in the United States Senate, and Georgia Governor Jimmy Carter, who would himself capture the 1976 Democratic nomination and Presidency. A unique example with this collection of signatures. Forty years after its original publication, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72 remains a cornerstone of American political journalism and one of the bestselling campaign books of all time. Hunter S. Thompson’s searing account of the battle for the 1972 presidency—from the Democratic primaries to the eventual showdown between George McGovern and Richard Nixon—is infused with the characteristic wit, intensity, and emotional engagement that made Thompson "the flamboyant apostle and avatar of gonzo journalism" (The New York Times). Hilarious, terrifying, insightful, and compulsively readable, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72 is an epic political adventure that captures the feel of the American democratic process better … [Click Below for Full Description]

Despite these flaws, an excellent copy, bearing the ownership blindstamp of James Beard Award-winning cookbook author, restaurateur, and television personality Nathalie Dupree on the half-title page, and boldly SIGNED by Julia Child and Paul Child on the front free endpaper (without inscription). Clearly a copy that Dupree used may times. Though signed later printings of this kitchen staple are not too difficult to acquire, copies with a notable culinary association are scarce and desirable. Fair to good. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Thompson, Hunter S.; Illustrations by Ralph Steadman
Arrow Books, San Francisco, 1973. Hilarious, terrifying, insightful, and compulsively readable, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ’72 is an epic political adventure that captures the feel of the American democratic process better t … [Click Below for Full Description]

PIERCY, Marge and SNYDER, Gary
Maidu Press, [c. 1973]. Item #033353 "A Maidu Free Poem" broadside of the title poem of Piercy's 1973 collection. This version has one small change from the book version published in 1973 (there were several more changes in later versions). The edition of this broadside is unstated, but the broadside is marked as "1/ ." The only other Maidu Free Poems we are aware of are a 1971 Gary Snyder broadside, "Swimming Naked in the Yuba River," and "I Saw the Green Yuba Flow" by Franco Beltrametti. The Snyder was done in an edition of 200 copies; OCLC records two copies of the Beltrametti. The Maidu Press was the creation of two of Snyder's neighbors and friends, Steve Sanfield and Dale Pendell, both of them poets living on the San Juan Ridge, as Snyder was. This broadside reproduces calligraphy by Snyder, according to the Snyder bibliography. The presence of a blacked out mistake in the last line of the first stanza and the backward limitation (the copy number specified but not the number of copies, rather than vice versa) combine to suggest this is a trial copy or an unused or proof copy. We have no evidence that the edition was ever done: the Piercy bibliography lists no Maidu Press publication and OCLC shows no copies held in institutional libraries. A scarce, virtually unknown collaboration between Piercy and Snyder, both of them major American poets of the postwar era, and both associated with the counterculture of the 1960s and beyond. 8-1/2" x 11", on heavy orange paper. Shrinkwrapped with a board backing. Fine.

CARTER, Forrest
(Gantt, Alabama: Whipporwill Publishers, 1973. First edition. Just about fine in very near fine dustwrapper with a little rubbing and a small triangular chip at the top of the front panel. The exceptionally rare true first edition of the author's first novel, preceded only by a political pamphlet biography of Alabama Governor Lurleen Wallace. According to one source, only 75 hardcover copies were printed, but not distributed, when Carter sent a copy to actor/director Clint Eastwood, unsolicited. The star read the book and bought the rights. Reportedly one of the conditions of the sale of the movie rights was the pulping of this entire edition in anticipation of publication by Delacorte under the title *Gone to Texas*. Apparently a few copies were retained by employees of the printing house (which was in Birmingham, not Gaant, as stated). Carter, born Asa Earl Carter, was an enigmatic figure who had a history of violence and racist beliefs and for years wrote and edited white-supremacist literature (he allegedly wrote George Wallace's famous "Segregation now! Segregation tomorrow! Segregation forever! " speech). Late in life he seemingly had a profound change of heart and turned to fiction, assuming the guise of Native American ancestry. His book *The Education of Little Tree* was, until the author's past came to light, widely lauded for its authenticity as a perceptive autobiography of a Native American. Carter choked to death in 1979, after a fist fight with his grown son, leaving many unanswered questions as to his true motivations and beliefs. Clint Eastwood's film versi … [Click Below for Full Description]

Vonnegut, Kurt Jr.
Delacorte Press / Seymour Lawrence, (New York), 1973. 295 pages. A novel about a man obsessed with the writings of Kilgore Trout. First edition (first printing). Near fine in a near fine dust jacket--a superior copy this book. The top edge stain is still yellow; the spine is just a tiny bit faded, there is a small bump at the top of the spine. The endpapers have a small "bubble" where the glue did not adhere correctly during binding. The most significant issue is a crease on the back flap, now straightened. This copy is signed by Vonnegut in a contempoary hand as Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. This copy comes in a custom folding clamshell box with a leather label. Provenance: Joe Pietro III, Vonnegut's screen printer. The box is his distinctive design. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Lightnin' Rod. [Jalal Mansur Nuriddin].
Harmony Books, 1973. Lightnin' Rod. [Jalal Mansur Nuriddin]. HUSTLERS CONVENTION. 8vo pictorial wrappers. NY: Harmony Books, 1973. A fine bright copy of this seminal piece of African-American poetry. Paperback original; there was no hardcover first edition. Very scarce indeed. A long poem that chronicles street-life in Harlem from the '50s through the '70s glorifying the violent lives of crap-shooters, pimps, drug dealers and gang-bangers. Nuriddin, as Lightnin' Rod, also recorded the work in 1973, and experts generally give precedence to the book. In the Hip-Hop world, the recorded version of Hustlers Convention is widely cited as one of the "lost masterpieces" of rap music, preceding Sugar Hill Gang's Rapper's Delight (generally hailed as the first true "rap" album) by some six years. A quick online search via Google or You Tube reveals the full extent of the influence of this book and its author. This copy is one of a few sent out for review, with no review slip, but with a black and white photograph of the cover art inserted.
