Berlin, Sven [1911 - 1999].
1973. Hand-made paper wrappers. 39 cream, clay-coated A4 leaves (23 x 32 cm.) and one sheet (25.3 x 20.3 cm.) comprising the text; 14 (twelve 20.3 x 25.3 cm. and two 20.3 x 19.8 cm.) loose sheets containing splendid pen and ink (black) drawings used as illustrations; one sheet with Berlin's notes in blue ink as to placement of the illustrations (17.3 x 10 cm.); and one sheet (20.3 x 30.4 cm.) with chapter notes, directions to the typist, table of contents, etc., written in red, blue, green and black ink. An intriguing manuscript written in Berlin's strong hand with his large, bold illustrations, rich in imagery and metaphor; an important and interesting artifact of this fascinating and colorful novelist/artist. A unique, VG+ item. Item #30410 Sven Berlin was a poet, a painter, a sculptor, a dancer and a writer. His 1962 roman-a-clef novel The Dark Monarch, a work written with the prime motive of venting Berlin's personal anger over the hypocrisies of an over-close and competitive art St. Ives art colony, was not well received by his fellow art colony members, who all too easily recognized themselves within the pages of the text. The book was withdrawn after four successful libel actions. Contrary to what some writers report, Berlin did not abandon the genre of fiction following the unpleasantness that The Dark Monarch brought. In 1964 he published his novel Jonah's Dream: A Meditation on Fishing, a volume full of Berlin's accomplished and sensitive vignettes of fish and fishermen, and in 1971, his knowledge of the gypsy counter-culture emerged in his novel Dromengo: Man of … [Click Below for Full Description]

J.R.R. Tolkien
USA: Houghton Mifflin, 1973. New. For sale here are new, true second edition copies of The Hobbit and The Lord Of The Rings. These books were given to my father by The Bookbinder: A. Horowitz and Sons in The 1970's. They were the bindery that bound these books. These books have been sitting on my shelf, unopened, until I took the pictures that you see above. These books were the very first of the second printing. The first printing date of The Hobbit can be confirmed by Tolkien collectors, and is affirmed by the Library of Congress number which begins with "73". The Hobbit, which you can see in the picture above. In 1973, Houghton Mifflin began to publish a "Collectors Edition" which restored the color paintings. This was nicely bound in leatherette, and came with a nice slipcase. The only date that can be found on these is the copyright date of 1965 & 1966. This edition contains Tolkien's own color Hobbit plate drawings Green leatherette boards with border and a gilt scene in the center of the front cover. Green marbled page edges, feature Tolkien's illustrations. The slip case has an illustrated paste down. The book and slip case are new. The Lord Of The Rings was also published in 1973, Houghton Mifflin though my research has not turned up an identifying Library of Congress number. The copyright page says Collector's Edition with the copyright dates of 1965 & 1966. This is a beautiful collector's edition in slipcase, bound in red faux leather with gilded lettering and decorations on the spine and cover. This edition contains the full text of all three books-The Fellowshi … [Click Below for Full Description]

GARY (Romain)
Paris, Gallimard, (7 mai) 1973.1 vol. (150 x 220 mm) de 393 pp. et [3] ff. Broché. Edition originale.

Stern, Gerald
Omaha: The Cummington Press with Abattoir Editions. First edition of his first book, 1973, one hundred copies printed. Tall 8vo, batik paper covered boards, spine label, 71 pp. Good plus to very good copy, light wear and loss of paper to corners, wear and faint loss along outer spine joints, still a very attractive copy. Stern has inscribed this book 'for my dear friend, Lloyd' on title page, and below this has signed it, more recently, 'one of the last two copies of The Naming of Beasts in my possession, Gerald Stern.' Purchased directly from Stern, who says his friend Lloyd never came by to pick it up, lucky for us! Very Good.

Franti?ek Gross (1909-1985)
[Prague], 1973. Printed on thick wove paper measuring ca. 30 × 21 cm, plate measurements 14.5 × 10 cm. Signed and numbered (22 of 27). Fine. Gross was an early member of the Czech post-war artist collective "Skupina 42" (Group 42), formally founded in 1940, during the German Protectorate. The group was forbidden by the Communist government in 1948, but its members and artists continued to work and impact the Czech art scene well into the 1970s. "Skupina 42" was significantly shaped by the experience of war and the German occupation. It combined pre-war tendencies such as cubism, futurism, and constructivism with existentialist and surrealist thought and images. Nevertheless it also sought to counteract a certain academic quality in art and was drawn to a kind of urban realism: the city in its manifold forms was an important theme, and ties to American literature and art were also strong.
