        Typed Letter Signed

1973. Signed. NIXON, Richard. Typed Letter Signed. Washington: May 1, 1973. One page, 7 by 10-1/2 inches, on pale green White House stationery. With original ""The White House"" envelope. $3000.Typed letter signed (""RN"") by President Nixon, to San Diego Union-Tribune publisher James S. Copley, written shortly after his historic 1972 trip to China had begun to thaw relations between the two superpowers, regarding Copley's ""proposal for furthering our relations with the People's Republic of China"": ""I can certainly understand your interest in acquiring a pair of giant panda bears for the San Diego Zoo… however, the Chinese may be reluctant to provide us another pair.""This letter is addressed to James S. Copley, Chairman-Publisher, Copley Newspapers, La Jolla, and reads, in full, ""Dear Jim: Before any more time passes, I want to thank you for your letter of March 23, and your proposal for furthering our relations with the People's Republic of China. I can certainly understand your interest in acquiring a pair of giant panda bears for the San Diego Zoo. The pair which are now at the National Zoo in Washington have been a tremendously popular attraction. Because of the rarity of these animals, however, the Chinese may be reluctant to provide us another pair. To assure that your suggestion gets careful consideration, I am forwarding a copy of your letter to Assistant Secretary of State John Richardson. His office coordinates Sino-American cultural exchanges—to the degree that the government is involved at all in what is largely a people-to-people affair. I know he will give your suggestion thoughtful study. Pat joins me in extending our best wishes to you and to Helen. Sincerely, [signed] RN."" A conservative Republican, James S. Copley (1916-73) was publisher of the San Diego Union, the San Diego Union-Tribune, and the San Diego Evening Tribune from 1947 until his death in 1973. He was Chairman of the Board of The Copley Press, a newspaper chain comprising 15 daily and 32 weekly publications. With original White House envelope. Fine condition.

        Grona Lund

1973. First Edition . Signed. PETERSEN, Anders. Gröna Lund Om Människor På Ett Nöjesfält. Helsingborg, Sweden: Aktuell Fotolitteratur, (1973). Quarto, original white laminated photographic boards. $3500.First edition of Petersen’s scarce first photobook, signed by him on the title page, with over 120 photogravures by this leading Swedish photographer whose frank “diarist approach, frequently directed at the fringes of society”(Parr & Badger), first emerged in this landmark work.Swedish photographer Anders Petersen first attracted international attention with this photo-essay on a Stockholm amusement park and later confirmed the acclaim with his photobook Café Lehmitz (1978). “Like Robert Frank, Petersen is drawn to those on life’s margins, a poet of the seedy and the subversive… His images possess… what Petersen describes as ‘a kind of poetical sadness” (Observer). In Gröna Lund, his outstanding inaugural work, Petersen early reveals that distinctive “diaristic approach, frequently directed at the fringes of society,” which has become his trademark (Parr & Badger I:231). With text by Jan Stolpe. Issued without dust jacket. See Open Book, 318. Images fine, very light edge-wear to boards. About-fine condition, scarce signed.

Zelandiae Comitatus novissima tabula.Amsterdam, widow of Joachim Ottens and sons [or Reinier and Josua Ottens], [ca. 1724 or 1747]. Imperial folio (57 x 36.5 cm). Comprising 9 untrimmed engraved sheets (each 56.5 x 66 cm; plate size 46.5 x 53.5 cm) that, if assembled, would give a map image of about 139 x 159 cm. Modern half calf.

      - J. Groote, ed., Visscher-Roman kaart van Zeeland (1973), p. [7]; IKAR (4 copies); Koeman III, p. 88, item 153; V.d. Krogt, Advertenties 924, 928, 930, 943, 944. Magnificent large wall-map of Zeeland at a scale of about 1:42,000, known as the "Visscher-Roman" wall map, here as revised ca. 1724 by Reinier Ottens and published by the Ottens family. The map was originally produced in or shortly before 1655 by the Amsterdam engraver and map and atlas publisher Nicolaus Visscher I (1618-1679) and then or soon after published together with the Middelburg bookseller and publisher Zacharias Roman (1595-ca. 1675). Andries de Leth managed the firm for Visscher's widow and took it over in 1720. Around that time many of Visscher's plates were dispersed and the widow Ottens and sons must have acquired the Zeeland plates. They traded under that name from the death of Joachim Ottens, buried 28 June 1719, to the death of his widow, buried 6 February 1725. Reinier Ottens (1698-1750) revised the Zeeland map for publication with the plates in the present states, with new title-cartouches in three of the plates, each with the imprint of the widow Ottens and sons, so shortly before February 1725. Although no states are known with the imprint of Reinier and Josua Ottens, they advertised both the 9-sheet map and the 3 separately issued parts in 1747 and 1748, so they probably reprinted the maps without revising the plates in 1747.Each map is mounted on a stub, so that it can open flat. In fine condition, with only a small marginal smudge and occasional minor spots, and wholly untrimmed, preserving all of the deckles. The binding very good, with the corners slightly scuffed. A fine copy of a magnificent wall map of Zeeland, engraved in 1655 and here revised ca. 1724.

The Koran, commonly called the Alcoran of Mohammed, .London, Charles Ackers for John Wilcox, 1734. Large 4to (25.5 x 20.5 cm). With 5 engraved plates: a large folding map of the Arabian peninsula (with an inset view of the "Temple at Mecca"), a folding plan and view of the "Temple at Mecca", and 3 family trees (2 folding). Contemporary calf, gold-tooled board edges. Rebacked.

      - Fück, Die Arabischen studien, p. 104; P.M. Holt, Studies in the history of the Near East (1973), pp. 57-60; Schnurrer, p. 429. First edition of the first English Quran to be translated directly from the Arabic: a landmark not only in efforts to bring an accurate version of the Quran to the English-speaking world, but also in Western Quranic studies in general. It also includes Sale's 7-page note to the reader, with criticisms of earlier translations into English and other languages, his 187-page preliminary discourse bringing together a wealth of information about Islamic culture, and valuable scholarly footnotes, including material from the Islamic commentaries of al-Baydawi and al-Suyuti. Holt notes his "enlightened and objective attitude" in sharp contrast with most Western Arabists of his day or earlier: "His freedom from religious prejudice , his obvious conviction that Arabic writers were the best source of Arab history, and Muslim commentators the fittest to expound the Quran, marks an enormous advance ". Sale's English translation remains highly regarded today. In fine condition and only slightly trimmed. The binding is rebacked and has several restorations, but is otherwise good and remains structurally sound. A landmark edition of the Qur'an and the first good English translation.

The Mary Tyler Moore Show ("The Lars Affair"--The July 1973 Revised Script)

1973. Original wraps. Near Fine. The July 1973 "Revised Production Script" of one of the great early episodes of "The Mary Tyler Moore Show". Approaching the midway point of this landmark comedy series (1970-1977), this episode, pitting the "Happy Homemaker" against a cuckolded Phyllis, was written by Ed. Weinberger --one of the show's principal creative forces-- and fires on all cylinders, with wonderful performances by Mary herself, Ted, Phyllis and Sue Anne Nivens. This script belonged to --and was lightly annotated by-- one of this episode's writing advisers, a woman who performed stand-up in Los Angeles in the 60s and 70s. The script is crisp and Near Fine in its purple wrappers, with typed yellow pages. Tall quarto, an uncommon example of original source material from the show many feel represents the very pinnacle of television.

The Sermon on the Mount from the Gospel of St. Matthew, Chapters 5, 6, 7.

Worcester, MA: Achille J. St. Onge, 1973. 55pp. The text is printed with large ornamental initials in red by Joh. Enschedé en Zonen. In a striking designer binding by Stephen Conway, evoking ancient wood and stone. Conway writes that his bindings "have a tactile quality, in keeping with the three dimensional qualities of the book," and "a sort of earthy, minimalist look, hinting at the content." The central panel of the covers is comprised of a plinth with three steps, covered in parchment stained with tones of copper and bronze. In the center is a cross cut from vellum. The four surrounding panels are covered with hand-painted paste-paper patterned with wood grain and sealed with a matte wax finish. The panels are slightly separated, revealing underlays of black text between them. Conway also painted the endpapers with textural shades of brown and black, giving them the appearance of wood and bark. The spine is gilt-titled mahogany morocco. Following his belief that the box in which a book is housed is part of the overall work and serves to enhance the viewer's experience, the book sits in a felt-lined compartment between the steps of a larger three-level plinth covered in hand-painted parchment. Conway was named a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 2000, and his work is held in collections worldwide, including the National Library of Scotland and the British Library. He is the current President of Designer Bookbinders. Extremely fine. (2 1/2 by 1 3/4; 64x43mm).

        Poetamenos

Edicaos Invencao, Sao Paulo 1973 - 265 x 265 mm portfolio, printed blue and red on cream stock, containing 10 printed cards in varying colours. Edition of 500. Includes introduction in Portuguese and English. Often referred to as the second edition, but this 1973 publication is effectively the first printed offset publication of this important concrete poetry work. It was first published in hand-typed manuscript form as part of Noigandres 2 – the rarest of all Noigandres publications. In the introduction, de Campos describes the multi-coloured fragments as a formal homage to the music of Webern. The artist plays with the typographical page as a means to communicate the polyphonic nature of the poem/performance. Crossing into the formal fields of script and song, Poetamenos communicates a multi-sensorial use of language, its formal design a vehicle for its content. Representing a formal revolution of sorts, it was the first time colour had been used as a signifier of voice in Brazilian poetry, and can be hereby seen as a precursor of Sound Poetry, whereby performance became a vital part of the work’s meaning. Emphasising the dualistic relationship between performance and print at work in Poetamenos, De Campos has stated that the first use of the phrase ‘poesia concreta’ was in 1955, during a performance of Poetamenos – and a year later, the phrase was used in Noigandres 3, the first time in print. Condition: very good.

The First Collected Works of Sir Winston Churchill. Centenary Limited Edition.

London: Library of Imperial History in association with the Hamlyn Publishing Group Ltd,, 1973?6. [With:] The Collected Essays of Sir Winston Churchill. Centenary Limited Edition. 38 volumes, octavo. Original green morocco by Robert Hartnoll, spines lettered and ruled in gilt, Churchill arms gilt to front boards within simple frame gilt, all edges gilt, green moiré silk doublures, turn-ins gilt-ruled, bound green silk page-markers. Housed in the original green cloth slipcases with morocco sides, Churchill arms gilt. Illustrations throughout, as plates and to the text. A fine set. Unique set of the Centenary Limited Edition, the final set bound, and the only one in green morocco. Signed by ten craftsmen of Robert Hartnoll's bindery on the initial blank. The Library of Imperial History went bankrupt before the projected run of 3,000 sets could be completed, so "the print run never exceeded 2,000 copies and only 1750 sets were ever published" (Cohen). The published sets were issued in vellum, which has proven susceptible to cockling and discolouration. In the 1980s Richard M. Langworth, founder of the International Churchill Society, travelled to Robert Hartnoll's craft bindery in Bodmin, Cornwall, finding that "for the past several years they had been warehousing some 200 unbound sheets of Collected Essays and about 50 sets of Collected Works" (p. 365; on p. 368 Langworth states that "about 100 unbound sets of the Collected Works were discovered"). It transpired that a New York dealer had bought the remaining sheets from the publisher's receivers and persuaded the bindery to produce twenty sets of the Works in red morocco, before disappearing and leaving the account unsettled. Langworth records that he and fellow Churchill expert Mark Weber proceeded to bind up the remaining sheets of the Essays; according to Weber's laid-in catalogue description, the pair also took control of the Collected Works sheets, with fifty done in red morocco, and he chose this unique green morocco binding for the final set.

Cohen AA1; Langworth pp. 362-9; Woods p. 391.

"[Goldman's] swashbuckling fable is nutball funny...a 'classic' medieval melodrama that sounds like all the Saturday serials you ever saw feverishly reworked by the Marx Brothers," said Newsweek.
