        Gravity's Rainbow

FIRST EDITION UNCORRECTED PROOF New York: Viking, 1973. EXTREMELY RARE UNCORRECTED PROOF OF THE FIRST EDITION of Pynchon's masterpiece, one of the most celebrated works of modern literature; winner of the National Book Award for 1974. "Pynchon's Gravity's Rainbow (1973) is a tour de force in 20th-century literature. In exploring the dilemmas of human beings in the modern world, the story, which is set in an area of post-World War II Germany called 'the Zone,' centres on the wanderings of an American soldier who is one of many odd characters looking for a secret V-2 rocket that will supposedly break through the Earth's gravitational barrier when launched. The narrative is filled with descriptions of obsessive and paranoid fantasies, ridiculous and grotesque imagery, and esoteric mathematical and scientific language. For his efforts Pynchon received the National Book Award, and many critics deemed Gravity's Rainbow a visionary, apocalyptic masterpiece" (Britannica). The uncorrected proof is famously rare: Viking once confirmed that no proofs had been made; in recent years, however, a handful have surfaced.New York: Viking Press, (1973). Octavo, original wrappers; custom box. Fading to spine and top edge or wrappers; a handful of pages with marks in the margin, most likely by a reviewer; crayon "swirl" on blanks at rear. A rare copy of the earliest form of one of the most important American novels of the century. Very Good.

Captain Cook's Florilegium. A selection of engravings from the drawings of plants collected by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander on Captain Cook's first voyage to the islands of the Pacific, with accounts of the voyage by Wilfrid Blunt and of the botanical explorations and prints by W.T. Stearn [with] Captain Cook's Florilegium: A note on its production by Joy Law, 1976.

London: Royal College, 1973. Large folio, with 30 engravings; original black Nigerian goatskin and Japanese silk, housed in a protective buckram case. One of the finest botanical productions of all time. The Royal College of Art's printing of these original eighteenth-century copper-plates appeared in an edition of only 100 numbered copies on specially handmade paper, presented in a specially designed binding by Zaehnsdorf of London. The edition was fully subscribed long before it was completed. When Cook's first voyage returned to London, the original botanical drawings were made into detailed and accurate paintings under Banks' supervision, with reference to the collection of actual specimens. Following this they were engraved, and we know that Banks intended to oversee full publication of the collection of engravings. In fact, only a proof impression was made and the undertaking abandoned. The British Museum (Natural History) holds the original copper-engraved plates, as well as the drawings and specimens themselves, and a set of the proof impressions made from the copper-engravings.Between 1900 and 1905 lithographic copies were made of 318 of these proof impressions and published as "Illustrations of Australian Plants collected in 1770". The copper-plates themselves remained unused, until in 1960 it was decided that the Royal College of Art should print a selection of the most beautiful. The result, after thirteen years of planning and trials, was this splendid production, which for the first time showed the extraordinary strength of the images. Perfectly printed, rich impressions in strong black ink, they show the important botany of the Cook voyage to great advantage, and at the same time make it a matter for regret that no eighteenth-century edition appeared. A fine copy.

(facsimile of autograph title), 34 pp.1f. (autograph musical manuscript facsimile)6 double-sided plates printed in colour. Signed by both the composer and artist at lower margin of limitation leaf. Binding slightly worn; slipcase slightly soiled. A very attractive copy overall. Limited to 300 copies signed by both the composer and artist, this no. 22. Written to be performed in St. Paul's Cathedral to commemorate the fiftieth anniversary of the Save the Children Fund on May 19, 1969. "The down-to-earth style and impersonal tone of Brecht's Kinderkreuzzug, a ballad about the death of a wandering band of children in the war-torn Poland of 1939, allowed Britten's anger to surface. The manipulations of a 12-note row appear to symbolize, here as elsewhere, the dying civilization of Europe, reflected through the fate of the children and their dog, whose death ends 'a very grisly piece' (as Britten himself called it) on an unsentimental note." Grove Music Online. "... Britten ensured in two ways that his tribute - to an ideal that is persistently reflected in his own work - should not fall a lifeless victim to stiffly charitable sentiments: he chose a text from Brecht, and he conceived the work for the heterogeneous resources of a school music group - the very skilled Wandsworth School Boys' choir and a large band of percussion players, together with two pianists and an organist. The work that resulted is not directly related to the rest of Britten's output either in genre or in the manner of the muiscal discourse... Of all Britten's works for children, this one most bluntly reminds us how much their world is a microcosm of our own." Evans: The Music of Benjamin Britten, pp. 285 and 292.

Histoire de ce qui s'est passé au royaume du Japon l'annee 1624.Paris, Sebastien Chappelet, 1628. 8vo. With a woodcut Jesuit seal on the title page. Contemporary tanned sheepskin, blind-stamped with a fleur-de-lys.

      - Alt-Japan-Katalog 1319; De Backer & Sommervogel VI, col. 1973; Cordier, Japonica, col. 311; Lach & Van Kley III, p. 376 & 403; WorldCat (2 copies). Very rare, first and only edition of a translation into French of the "Annual Letter" for 1624, the annual account of the Jesuit missions in Japan written for their superiors in Rome. Although possibly written by Jesuits in Japan, the text was edited by Rodrigues Girão in Macao. First published in its original Italian as a standalone book in 1628, it was immediately translated into Latin, French, Dutch and German. The letter describes the Great Edo Martyrdom of 1623, when 50 Christians were crucified on the orders of the Shogun. Added to that are lives of the principal martyrs and descriptions of previous persecutions of the Christians in Japan, whose religion had officially been banned in 1614. The book ends with various papal letters of support written to the Christians in Japan, which are present both in their original Latin and in French translation. With a library stamp and a manuscript date on the title-page. Some spots and waterstains in the margins, especially in the first 30 pages and some browning; small tear in the final page and stains on the final endpaper. Paste-downs are damaged and loose at several corners and front endpaper is missing. Binding rubbed, particularly on the spine. A good, structurally sound copy.

        Correspondence Archive

1973-1979. Eleven typed letters signed; one typescript biographical statement; an 8-page hand-corrected typescript of a short story; and an autograph letter signed from Selby's wife, all addressed to Selby's friend, journalist John S. Friedman, who first met Selby after inviting him to speak to his CUNY English class and who later interviewed him for The Village Voice. The earliest piece of writing here (August 24, 1973) is the two-page biographical statement, which is un-addressed. Written in essay form it recounts Selby's near-death experience with tuberculosis in his 20s and how that led to his writing obsession, despite his having "no idea for a story," and his six years of locking himself in his bedroom after work to write Last Exit to Brooklyn. The letters, written 1974-1981 and spanning three addresses (Los Angeles, New York and Greenwich, Connecticut), cover themes such as working on his novel The Demon (unnamed in the letter), but featuring Harry White, "who loved to f*ck," while simultaneously working on a play about salvation and a television movie, for Stanley Kramer, about the third Commandment (remembering the Sabbath); finishing his addiction novel Requiem for a Dream, which opens with the protagonist locking his mother in the closet ("Naturally it takes place in the Bronx. Where else could that happen?"); family; money; politics; the quest to turn his writing into film; and his health. The 8-page short story typescript included here is "A Little Respect," a manic 1978 take on a parent believing his son's (television) screen time is detrimental to his social skills. Lastly, there is an undated letter to Friedman from Selby's wife, informing Friedman of Selby's hospitalization with pneumonia. In all, roughly 20 full pages of text by Selby during a time in his life dedicated to work and family. Selby's novel Last Exit to Brooklyn was one of the taboo-smashing works of fiction published by Barney Rosset's Grove Press in the 1960s, alongside such books as William Burroughs' Naked Lunch and the long-suppressed Tropic novels of Henry Miller. Its frank depiction of drug use, homosexuality and violence made it a pivotal work of transgressive fiction. Pages folded for mailing; near fine. No Binding. Near Fine.

Nixon thanks longtime friend Jack Dreyfus for his invitation to revisit his island home off the Maine coast "at this time," ostensibly because Vice President Agnew had just told him that there was a federal investigation into certain of his own affairs while he served as Governor of Maryland just prior to his inauguration as Vice President

Washington, DC, August 6, 1973. 6.75" x 9". "Typed Letter Signed ""RN"" as President, 1 page, 6.75"" x 9"". Washington, August 6, 1973, pale green White House stationery with the presidential seal blind-embossed at top center. To Mr. Jack J. Dreyfus, Jr., Two Broadway, New York. Faint paper clip impression at top edge. With original envelope. Fine condition. In full, ""It is most gracious of you to invite Pat and me to revisit your beautiful home on Minot's Island. We have spoken often of the delightful time we spent there several years ago and we know how enjoyable it would be for us to come again. While we must forego another such visit at this time, Pat and I thank you for your thoughtfulness and want you to know how very much we appreciate your remembrance of us in this special way. Pat joins me in sending our very best personal regard."" In August 1971, exactly two years earlier, President and Mrs. Nixon had vacationed on Minot's Island, an island off the coast of Maine owned by Jack Dreyfus.Undoubtedly, President Nixon told his longtime friend Jack Dreyfus ""we must forego another such visit at this time"" to his ""beautiful home on Minot's Island"" because on August 2, 1973, just four days earlier, his Vice President, Spiro T. Agnew, had received a letter from a federal prosecutor informing him that there was an investigation into certain of his affairs by a grand jury in Baltimore; Agnew had served as Governor of Maryland from 1967-1969. On August 6th, the day President Nixon wrote this letter, Agnew met with Attorney General Elliot L. Richardson and informed the press of the investigation. On August 7th, the day the letter here offered was mailed and postmarked, Agnew met with Nixon at The White House. On August 8th, in a news conference, Agnew denounced charges against him that had appeared in the press and said he would not resign. Agnew resigned on October 10th.Financier Jack Dreyfus (1913-2009) was the founder of the Dreyfus Fund. In 1964, Life magazine called him the “Maverick Wizard Behind the Wall Street Lion,” in reference to the emblem of his fund and its aggressive marketing. Dreyfus, it said, was “the most singular and effective personality to appear in Wall Street since the days of Joseph Kennedy and Bernard Baruch.” His paternal grandfather was a first cousin of Alfred Dreyfus, the protagonist of the late 19th-century anti-Semitic scandal known as the Dreyfus Affair. Dreyfus sold his mutual fund company in 1970 and established the Dreyfus Health Foundation to pursue other medical applications for Dilantin which had cured his depression in the 1960s. In 2000, Dreyfus said that an account in The Arrogance of Power: The Secret World of Richard Nixon by Anthony Summers (New York: Viking, 2000) that he gave Dilantin to Richard Nixon in 1968 was correct. Dreyfus said he gave Nixon a bottle of 1,000 capsules of 100 milligrams each ''when his mood wasn't too good,'' and later gave him another bottle of 1,000 capsules."
