He was one of the foremost intelligencers of Europe of the seventeenth century, with a network of correspondents to rival those of Fabri de Peiresc, Marin Mersenne and Ismaël Boulliau. At the foundation of the Royal Society he took on the task of foreign correspondence, as the first Secretary. Born in Bremen, Germany, he trained in theology and received his degree on 2 November 1639. His movements during the 1640s are unclear, but he is thought to have worked as a tutor in England for much of the decade. In 1648 he left England and travelled, returning in the end to Bremen. He went to London in 1653, as a diplomat; and settled in England of the Interregnum. He forged a strong relationship with his lifelong patron Robert Boyle, and was tutor to Boyle's nephew Richard Jones. Oldenburg married his second wife, Dora Katherina Dury (1654–77), the daughter of John Dury. Either through John Milton, whom he met early in his mission, or through Lady Ranelagh, sister to Boyle and the mother of Richard Jone

        Daynight Lamp and Other Poems

1973. First Edition . Signed. (REY, H.A.) MORGENSTERN, Christian. The Daynight Lamp and Other Poems. Boston: Houghton Mifflin, 1973. Slim octavo, original black cloth, original dust jacket. $1800.First edition of this collection of Morgenstern's “Gallows Songs,” wonderfully illustrated with 20 lithographs by celebrated artist H.A. Rey and warmly inscribed by him, “To my dear neighbor Tina Smith, affectionately, Hans* (*the H in H.A. REY), Waterville Valley, N.H., 7-31-1974,” with a small original drawing of a morning star.“The common image of Morgenstern is as a writer of nonsense poetry, not unlike Edward Lear's… displaying a genuine humor, yet often touching the grotesque or burlesque to reveal a sharp edge of satire” (Garland, 632). Originally published in Germany between 1905 and 1928, his poems appeared again in the 1932 anthology Alle Galgenlieder (“All the Gallows Songs”). In the 1920s, H.A. Rey (today best known for the Curious George books) published a deluxe limited edition of lithographs illustrating selected Galgenlieder-his earliest work in book form. After Max Knight of the University of California Press translated and published Morgenstern's poetry in 1963, Rey revived his lithographs, and the two men created this volume, which includes some poems from Knight's 1963 edition and others appearing in English for the first time. Beside his inscription Rey has drawn a small, shining star, captioned “MORNING STAR” (the literal translation of Morgenstern's name).Several tiny holes to corners of boards. Price-clipped dust jacket with very minor chipping and a few small closed tears. A lovely copy.

St. Luke's Church, Old Street, London. E. C.

Manchester: G. R. Mellor,, 1973. Offset lithograph on laid paper. Image size: 45.7 x 61 cm. Sheet size: 58.9 x 72 cm. Tape residue to extreme top edge, hidden by the mount otherwise in excellent condition. Presented in a lime waxed ash frame with conservation glass and mount. Edition of 850. Signed in pencil lower right by Lowry, numbered with publisher's blindstamp lower left. Reproduced from an original oil painting on canvas executed in 1943. St Lukes was built in 1733 in Old Street, London, the church was closed by the Church of England in 1964 after subsidence made it unsafe. The roof was removed two years later for safety reasons and the shell became a dramatic ruin for 40 years, overgrown with trees, despite being a Grade I listed building. Eventually it was restored for the London Symphony Orchestra as a concert hall, rehearsal, recording space and educational resource.

        Suburbia

1973. First Edition . Signed. OWENS, Bill. Suburbia. (San Francisco): Straight Arrow, (1973). Oblong quarto, original photographic stiff paper wrappers. $1700.Early edition of the pioneering photobook, boldly inscribed on the half-title, “Pqt, Can you avoid suburbia? Bill Owens,” with 96 pages of black-and-white halftones, many paired with captioned quotes that add to the book's “indelible poignancy” (New York Times).“Almost every photo in Suburbia repays attentive looking, with details that turn an average photo into a great one… A groundbreaking exemplar of documentary photography” (New York Times). In Suburbia, Bill Owens accomplished an “exemplary, no-frills documentary tone… one of the most popular and successful American photobooks of the 1970s” (Parr & Badger II:24). “Suburbia is too sympathetic and too conflicted to be simply another ironic deadpan document… This delicate balance of outsider and insider perspectives turns the resulting book into a critical self-portrait—one that's almost painfully observant but withholds judgment” (Roth, 224). First edition, second issue, preceded by December 1972 edition. Open Book, 296. Images clean and bright; light edge-wear to original wrappers. A near-fine copy, scarce inscribed.
