TLS From Guy Bolton To Peter Schwed

Np Nd [?], London 1973 - 2pp. TLS, on blue Buck's Club headed notepaper. Very well preserved, lacking the envelope. TLS FROM GUY BOLTON TO WODEHOUSE'S EDITOR AT SIMON AND SCHUSTER, PETER SCHWED, DISCUSSING THE PLAN OF ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER AND TIM RICE TO WRITE A JEEVES AND WOOSTER MUSICAL. 'Hot from the success of Jesus Christ, Superstar, Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber made the pilgrimage to Remsenberg with their next project, Jeeves. Wodehouse feared it would be a flop, but encouraged 'the boys' in a venture that, after his death, fulfilled his predictions.' (McCrum) Wodehouse was not the only one to have concerns about the wisdom of embarking on the project, as this letter to Peter Schwed from Wodehouse's lifelong friend and collaborator, Guy Bolton, shows: 'Dear Peter, The J.C. Superstar boys, Webber and Rice, are writing a musical to be based on Bertie Wooster and Jeeves. They have engaged me to act in an advisory capacity and I would greatly appreciate a private word from you that might steer the ship away from the rocks to some degree. . They have chosen The Code Of The Woosters as their 'book' and I cannot believe there isn't a better choice.' Bolton goes on to identify precisely the problem any and every Wodehouse adaptation faces: 'The catch is, as I'm sure you will agree, is [sic] that the pleasure derived from these books is the narrative as spun out by Bertie Wooster with all its allusions, his thoughts and emotions and display of character. This is largely lost in a play and you are left with 'scenes'.' Bolton makes clear his objection is to the idea, and not to those whose idea it was: 'Andrew Webber, who, in my opinion, is a superb talent has written a complete score that is utterly delicious. Tim Rice's lyrics . are also amusing and original but he has too much faith in Plum's every turn of story.' What ever you say you will be saying to me alone and certainly not to Plum. My affection for him, and indeed my admiration, is unbounded but I want to help him and two very charming and talented young men from running into a disaster.' Bolton was pushing ninety when he wrote this letter, and his backstage attempt to help his doddery friend of ninety-three dodge a bullet is infinitely touching, but in the end it proved futile. Rice bailed as lyricist in the early stages of the show's development. His place was taken by Alan Ayckbourn, but the show ran into exactly the problems Bolton had predicted. At its try-out run in Bristol, Jeeves, starring David Hemmings and Michael Aldridge, was running at just under five hours, which is pretty much bang-on for Eugene O'Neill but a touch on the long side for a musical comedy. The show limped in to London in April 1975, and limped out again in May. A superb letter written in Wodehouse's interest, by one of his very closest friends.

One of the most famous opening lines in literature might as well refer to the novel it sets off —Gravity's Rainbow, Thomas Pynchon's masterpiece, marks an event in literary history whose significance readers have argued and will argue for a long time, but which nobody can afford to ignore. Published in 1973, it is often considered as the postmodern novel, redefining both postmodernism and the novel in general." (Literary Encyclopedia) "This is the war book to end them all." The following set of twelve hand-stamped books are probably Robert Jack’s most well-known artists books. For many years they were given away, handed around, stocked in avant-garde bookshops, collected, and discarded.         BRASSAÏ - lettre autographe signée concernant une exposition aux USA

      - Lettre autographe signée à sa chère Babeth. New York, 4 juin 1973 ; 2 pages in-4° sur 2 feuillets. With 5 engraved plates: a large folding map of the Arabian peninsula (with an inset view of the "Temple at Mecca"), a folding plan and view of the "Temple at Mecca", and 3 family trees (2 folding).       Fück, Die Arabischen studien, p. 104; P.M. Holt, Studies in the history of the Near East (1973), pp. 57-60; Schnurrer, p. 429. First edition of the first English Quran to be translated directly from the Arabic: a landmark not only in efforts to bring an accurate version of the Quran to the English-speaking world, but also in Western Quranic studies in general. It also includes Sale's 7-page note to the reader, with criticisms of earlier translations into English and other languages, his 187-page preliminary discourse bringing together a wealth of information about Islamic culture, and valuable scholarly footnotes, including material from the Islamic commentaries of al-Baydawi and al-Suyuti. Holt notes his "enlightened and objective attitude" in sharp contrast with most Western Arabists of his day or earlier: "His freedom from religious prejudice ..., his obvious conviction that Arabic writers were the best source of Arab history, and Muslim commentators the fittest to expound the Quran, marks an enormous advance ...". Sale's English translation remains highly regarded today. In fine condition and only slightly trimmed. The binding is rebacked and has several restorations, but is otherwise good and remains structurally sound. A landmark edition of the Qur'an and the first good English translation.

It was originally written in Mandaic script which is a local variant of the Aramaic language. Norberg published the Codex in Syriac characters together with a Latin translation. "Édition donnée la copie d'un manuscrit sabéen de la Biblioth. Impériale de France". Pallis, Mandaean Bibliography, p. 131. Zenker, BO ii, 1973, 1815.

Autograph Letter, Signed. With Signed photograph.

New York, 1973. Typed letter from author P.G.Wodehouse at his Long Island, NY, home, February 1973, to a fan in Glasgow, Scotland. The author mentions a new book that he is writing, to be finished in the spring, which is most likely 'Batchelors Anonymous' which was published in October. Elegantly mounted, framed and glazed. Total size: 545 x 445 mm. P.G.Wodehouse 1881-1975, English comic novelist, short story writer, lyricist and playwright;wrote for the 'Strand' from 1905-1940. Prior to this he had written for the Strand's companion boy's magazine 'The Captain'. In the Jan.1916 issue he introduced 'Jeeves', the ever resourceful 'gentleman's gentleman', and the good-hearted young blunderer 'Bertie Wooster' of the Drones Club, thus creating two of the most famous and best loved characters in twentieth century literature. He created several other well known series and characters including Uncle Fred, Blandings Castle, and Mr. Mulliner, all appearing monthly in the Strand. Most of his works gently parodied the British aristocracy of the 1920s and 1930s and with passing decades, Wodehouse's picture of Edwardian England eventually became nostalgic. After difficult Wartime years he moved to the United States He took American citizenship in 1955 and was awarded a K.B.E late in life- in a BBC interview he claimed he had no further ambitions, now that he was knighted and had a waxwork of him in Madame Tussauds!

Captain Cook's Florilegium. A selection of engravings from the drawings of plants collected by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander on Captain Cook's first voyage to the islands of the Pacific, with accounts of the voyage by Wilfrid Blunt and of the botanical explorations and prints by W.T. Stearn [with] Captain Cook's Florilegium: A note on its production by Joy Law, 1976

London: Royal College, 1973. A fine copy.. Large folio, with 30 engravings; original black Nigerian goatskin and Japanese silk, housed in a protective buckram case. One of the finest botanical productions of all time. The Royal College of Art's printing of these original eighteenth-century copper-plates appeared in an edition of only 100 numbered copies on specially handmade paper, presented in a specially designed binding by Zaehnsdorf of London. The edition was fully subscribed long before it was completed. When Cook's first voyage returned to London, the original botanical drawings were made into detailed and accurate paintings under Banks' supervision, with reference to the collection of actual specimens. Following this they were engraved, and we know that Banks intended to oversee full publication of the collection of engravings. In fact, only a proof impression was made and the undertaking abandoned. The British Museum (Natural History) holds the original copper-engraved plates, as well as the drawings and specimens themselves, and a set of the proof impressions made from the copper-engravings.Between 1900 and 1905 lithographic copies were made of 318 of these proof impressions and published as "Illustrations of Australian Plants collected in 1770". The copper-plates themselves remained unused, until in 1960 it was decided that the Royal College of Art should print a selection of the most beautiful. The result, after thirteen years of planning and trials, was this splendid production, which for the first time showed the extraordinary strength of the images. Perfectly printed, rich impressions in strong black ink, they show the important botany of the Cook voyage to great advantage, and at the same time make it a matter for regret that no eighteenth-century edition appeared.

The Botany and Chemistry of Hallucinogens

Springfield, Illinois: Charles C. Thomas, 1973. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. First edition. xxiii, 267pp. Purple cloth with gilt lettering. Very Good+ with foxed edges and a few of former owner's penciled notes, in slightly soiled and shelf-worn unclipped dust jacket. Binding a little strained from laid-in letters. A collaboration of two titans in the study of psychoactive chemicals, written before their better-known The Plants of the Gods. Schultes is known as the father of ethnobotany, and Hofmann as the father of LSD.Copy of Texas chemistry associate professor Albert R. Machel, author of such articles as "Cyanide Analyses of Peaches." Presentation copy from Schultes, one of only six copies he received from the publisher according to him in a April 24, 1973 letter on Harvard Botanical Museum letterhead; it is included with the book. Schultes writes, "Thank you for your letter of April 2 and for sending the peyote which we value very much for our exhibits." Next paragraph he briefly explains Native American peyote ingestion, and then thanks the former owner for his assistance before the signature line. Also included are three signed, postmarked, single-page letters from Hofmann in Switzerland in Sandoz Labs envelopes and stationary. The first letter from Nov. 6, 1970 thanks Machel for his letter and "four pounds of seeds of Sophora secunidflora," a nicotine-like poisonous plant that Texan Native Americans sometimes ingest before taking peyote. "The quantity you sent me will suffice for the first investigation," Hofmann writes, " I shall ask you again if I need more material," and thanks him for his collaboration. The second envelope, dated September 11, 1972 includes a photocopied typed letter from Hofmann to Schultes about the Sophora secundiflora analysis with Schultes' reproduced holograph along its bottom margin. The enclosed original letter is dated September 8th; in it Hofmann breaks down the results of Sophora, concluding that none of the alkaloids are known to be hallucinogenic, and therefore he is not pharmacologically examining the samples. The final letter from January 26, 1973 regards Machel's previous question about "a general procedure for the extraction of toxic principles from seeds." "No such general procedure exists," Hofmann answers, then briefly outlines some specific extraction procedures.A very special record of correspondence that includes interesting background information on the authors' researches of peyote and the culture associated with its use, spanning the psychedelic era from Sandoz Laboratories (where Hofmann co-discovered LSD in 1943) to the halls of Harvard to rural East Texas.
