        Vermilion Sands

Jonathan Cape 1973 - The First UK Printing published by Jonathan Cape in 1973. The BOOK is in near Fine condition. Very slight bowing to the rear cover otherwise a very sharp copy with no erasures or inscriptions. Clean boards with bright gilt titling. The pages are clean with no spotting or toning. The pink top-stain is still present and with just a hint of fading adjacent to the spine. The WRAPPER is complete and is in near Fine condition with only light fading to the lower spine area with preservation of the red lettering (which commonly fades). A tiny amount of creasing at the upper front fold tip and a hint of rippling to the rear cover portion. The Brian Knight wrapper artwork looks very striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. The front flap details: 'Kingsley Amis calls Ballard 'one of the brightest stars in post-war fiction'. From his superb imagination he has this time conjured up violent and nightmarish dramas heightened both by the intensity of the landscape and by the twisted, overlit emotions of its denizins'. An increasingly difficult title to find in such collectible condition. Ashton Rare Books welcomes direct contact. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Notes on actor Rip Torn (Original manuscript essay, with corrections)

N.p., N.p. 1973 - Seven-page manuscript, executed in holograph pencil with numerous corrections. An early rough draft of an essay by Southern regarding his first encounter with actor Rip Torn, which, oddly, is more an encounter with the concept of Rip Torn than Rip Torn himself (though Torn would ultimately become one of Southern's closest friends and confidants). The piece was ultimately published as "One of the Real.ah.Originals" in the April 1973 issue of Saturday Review of the Arts. With reference to his involvement in "The Cincinnati Kid" during Sam Peckinpah's brief tenure with same, Southern describes a meeting with the film's producer, the producer still reeling from Peckinpah's acrimonious departure (Norman Jewison would ultimately take the directorial reigns). The bulk of the essay details how Southern wrote a new scene in the midst of the change, introducing what would become Torn's character, Slade, a "gentleman" card shark. Full provenance available on request.Lined notebook paper, rectos only, 8.5 x 11 inches. Near Fine.

He published a daily horoscope that appeared in more than 200 newspapers and his books of horoscopes sold over 50 million copies. He started out during the Second World War at the age of 17 when his predictions of horse races, boxing matches, and other sporting events were broadcast on Armed Forces Radio. Light wear at the edges, one copy with staple holes at the foredge and another lightly creases from being folded, still overall near fine.         Child of God.

New York: Random House, 1973. First edition of the author's second novel. Octavo, original half cloth. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page, "For Jimmy and Chris From El Paso Texas September 18, 1990 From your friend Cormac." Additionally signed in full by Cormac McCarthy below. The recipients were close friends of McCarthy. Fine in a near fine price-clipped dust jacket. Jacket design by Muriel Nasser. A nice association. In this taut, chilling novel, Lester Ballard--a violent, dispossessed man falsely accused of rape--haunts the hill country of East Tennessee when he is released from jail. While telling his story, Cormac McCarthy depicts the most sordid aspects of life with dignity, humor, and characteristic lyrical brilliance. Basis for the 2013 film bearing the same name, starring James Franco.

Broadside Program]: de l'ame pour l'ame [of the soul for the soul] An Evening Honoring the first true poet and seer Arthur Rimbaud 20 Octobre 1854 10 Novembre 1891

Gotham Book Mart?, [New York 1973 - Single blue folio leaf printed on the recto only. Fine. Line portrait drawing of Rimbaud by Smith at the top of the sheet above the text. The text lists the evening's program, along with a quote from Rimbaud: "The poet makes himself a seer by long, gigantic, and rational derangement of the senses. All forms of love, suffering, and madness. He searches himself. He exhausts all poisons in himself and keeps only their quintessences." Also mentions: "special appreciation to the Wartoke Concern, Robert Mapplethorpe, Dennis Florio, Sharon Ensko, Sam Wagstaff and Gotham Book Mart." A rare program from one of Patti Smith's earliest performances, predating her first album by two years. The first of three performances in honor of the anniversary of Rimbaud's death (also known as "Rock-n-Rimbaud"), it took place on the roof of Le Jardin, the gay disco in the Hotel Diplomat on November 4, 1973. Smith, dressed in an evening dress and feather boa, sang and recited her own works, as well as songs by Kurt Weil and Hank Ballard, backed up by Bill Elliot and future Patti Smith Group guitarist Lenny Kaye (only the second time that Smith and Kaye performed together). Neatly price clipped, with a Collins £ 2.50 price sticker adhered above the clipping. A loosly inserted Collins compliment slip accompanies the book.         Les Diners de Gala

New York: Felicie, 1973. FIRST EDITION IN ENGLISH, SIGNED AND INSCRIBED BY DALI AND WITH SKETCH OF A WOMAN'S FACE. AN IMPORTANT ASSOCIATION COPY, AND A NEARLY PERFECT COPY IN ORIGINAL SHIPPING BOX. "Les Diners de Gala, the opulent cookbook that [Dali] conceived and illustrated, sets out a surrealist gastro-aesthetics that is at once visceral and ascetic, Dionysian and Catholic... [It] showcases Dali's ornamentation of menus from such legendary restaurants as Maxim's and La Tour d'Argent and features the recipes of their chefs. Dali stages himself within the sumptuous culinary mise-en-scene... Les Diners de Gala moves between 'sado-masochistic pleasure', 'acute sybaritism', Rabelaisian scatology, religious ecstasy, and anaesthetic asceticism." (Richard Gough, On Cooking).         Autograph Letter, Signed. With Signed photograph.

New York, 1973. Typed letter from author P.G.Wodehouse at his Long Island, NY, home, February 1973, to a fan in Glasgow, Scotland. The author mentions a new book that he is writing, to be finished in the spring, which is most likely 'Batchelors Anonymous' which was published in October. Elegantly mounted, framed and glazed. Total size: 545 x 445 mm. P.G.Wodehouse 1881-1975, English comic novelist, short story writer, lyricist and playwright; wrote for the 'Strand' from 1905-1940. Prior to this he had written for the Strand's companion boy's magazine 'The Captain'. In the Jan.1916 issue he introduced 'Jeeves', the ever resourceful 'gentleman's gentleman', and the good-hearted young blunderer 'Bertie Wooster' of the Drones Club, thus creating two of the most famous and best loved characters in twentieth century literature. He created several other well known series and characters including Uncle Fred, Blandings Castle, and Mr. Mulliner, all appearing monthly in the Strand. Most of his works gently parodied the British aristocracy of the 1920s and 1930s and with passing decades, Wodehouse's picture of Edwardian England eventually became nostalgic. After difficult Wartime years he moved to the United States He took American citizenship in 1955 and was awarded a K.B.E late in life- in a BBC interview he claimed he had no further ambitions, now that he was knighted and had a waxwork of him in Madame Tussauds!
