Hollow Hills SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR

Hodder & Stoughton, London, 1973. First Edition. Signed by Author. Book Condition: Very Good Condition. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good. 'Readers of The Crystal Cave (and there are many millions of them) will not be the only ones who will find enchantment and delight in The Hollow Hills. In her new novel Mary Stewart tells the story of Merlin, and of the boyhood of Arthur from his birth to his accession to the throne of Britain. The countryside of England and Wales in the Dark Ages forms an almost tangible background -- with changing seasons, green rides through dark forests, and Merlin's retreat in the Westmorland hills -- to this wonderfully and powerfully realised picture of an ancestral hero coming to manhood; painfully distinguishing friends from enemies but never failing to perceive and to follow his destiny. And behind and around him is the strange, strong yet vulnerable figure of Merlin, who sees and knows so much but who must suffer, along with the rest of his turbulent countrymen, the pangs of a nation in strife, embattled kings and courtiers, hurried journeys and sudden death. What a world Mary Stewart has brought before the entranced reader in The Hollow Hills! Book - in Very Good green boards with gilt lettering - light bumping to the extreme corners and extreme bottom of the spine, minor mark to the bottom edge of the front board. Contents, light spotting/browning to the extreme page edges otherwise clean, bright and tightly bound. Dust Jacket - Very Good - a nice bright colourful jacket - light creasing to the extreme corners, minor closed tear to the top of the spine repaired with archival tape. Signed by the Author.         The Killer Angels

David McKay New York: David McKay. 1st Edition. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. FIRST EDITION of Michael Shaara's Pulitzer-prize winning novel about the battle of Gettysburg. "Reflecting on an extraordinary experience with his family visiting the battlefield at Gettysburg, Michael became obsessed with telling the story of that momentous event through the eyes of the main characters themselves, something that had never been done. After seven years, the manuscript for The Killer Angels was completed... To Michael's disappointment, The Killer Angels was rejected by the first fifteen publishers who saw the manuscript. Finally, in 1973, it was bought by the small independent publisher, The David McKay Company, who was subsequently bought by Random House... [The] novel received very little attention, and mixed reviews, thus it was a shock to both Michael and the literary community when the announcement was made that The Killer Angels had been awarded the 1975 Pulitzer Prize for Fiction" (jeffshaara.com).New York: David McKay, 1974.         Indispensable for art lovers: The Complete List of Invented Artists.

Bussigny/Lausanne; Kilroy Editions, 1973. 20,5x10 cm. A folding leaflet measuring 164 cm when unfolded. The first leaf has a small hole and a silk ribbon for hanging. A very fine copy. Reuterswärd explains: "Owing to the lack of new inventive artists in the Western world, KILROY, since 1962, has had new artists invented instead. KILROY EDITIONS hereby has the pleasure of celebrating this activity by proclaiming the names of the new culture's representatives. The letters and figures after the names refer to Pratt-Müller's systematic analysis of self-interest." The Swedish artist Reuterswärd (1934-) is one of the pioneers in the field of Artist's Books, and used the concept long before the term was coined. This copy is inscribed by him to the Swedish author, critic, and chief editor of Dagens Nyheter Olof Lagercrantz and his wife. Reuterswärd has also drawn a small death-head at the end of the list.       Barrie & Jenkins 1973. A Very Good Copy of this Book in Publisher's red cloth with silver lettered title to spine in a Very Good Dust-Jacket,no chips or tears to the outer edges of the wrapper. There is some rubbing to extremities and a little sunning to spine. There is also some spotting to the fore-edge of the book. This copy has NO previous ownership markings present but does come with a very attractive typed written letter by the Author from his Isle of Man home and SIGNED by him.The letter is housed in it's original envelope stamped Isle of Man (where Fraser then resided) and addressed to a lasy in South Africa. The 2 sided letter dated 29.1.74 refers to the Lady original letter and he is intrigued by a name of Flashman that appeared in John Dobie's South African Journal, the letter goes onto say he could have been a hitherto unmentioned younger brother of Flashman.Fraser goes onto say and I quote '' I'm most interested actually to find a genuine Flashman in Africa, because it isn't a coimmon name. There was a genuine Flashman in Africa who founded the Flashman Hotels in India, another (fat Stan Flashman) is at present I believe the leading ticket scapler in London, and there is a family of Flashmans now living in the West Country. But it's always nice to hear of a new member of the clan.... especially one who plays cards and does some quick horse-trading 'on spec' I'm very glad you wrote to tell me about him.Until Flashy does get to South Africa.... which i intend hime to do so all my best wishes Yours Sincerely George Fraser '' Definately an interesting letter and a real collector's item.8vo 286pp First Edition 1st Impression

The Logic of Animal Conflict. [In: Nature, Volume 246, November 2 1973].

1973. Large 4to. The November-December issues of Nature 1973 present, bound in a cont. full red cloth w. gilt lettering to spine. From the California Institute of Technology Chemistry Library, with "Withdrawn" stamp to both inside of front board and to bottom edge. Pp. 15-18. [Entire volume: 544 + 240 pp.]. First printing of the article which provides the earliest presentation of a form of the Hawk-Dove game, namely the evolutionarily stable strategy (ESS), which is a central concept in game theory. The ESS is formalized by Maynard smith, based on George R. Price's argument. The Hawk-Dove game is without doubt Maynard Smith's single most influential game theoretical model, and the present article forms the first basis for this branch of game theory, which culminated in Smith's book "Evolution and Theory of Games" from 1982. The seminal game theoretical concept, "Hawk-Dove" has been of great importance to biology, as it represents the use of the theory of games to evolution theory. Biologists have used modified versions of the game to investigate a series of factors relevant to biology. "Conflicts between animals of the same species usually are of "limited war" type, not causing serious injury. This is often explained as due to group or species selection for behaviour benefiting the species rather than individuals. Game theory and computer simulation analyses show, however, that a "limited war" strategy benefits individual animals as well as species." (summary, p. 15).Maynard Smith was elected a fellow of the Royal Society in 1977, and in 1986 he was awarded the Darwin Medal

        SLEEPING BEAUTY. Signed Typescript

New York: [Published by Knopf in 1973], 1973 Ross Macdonald's carbon typescript for the novel marked as "Copy 3 - My Master Copy" on the tile page in his hand. 332 pages housed mostly in individual plastic sheets as was Macdonald's custom. Holograph notes, corrections, emendations throughout. ".the finest series of detective novels ever written by an American." - NY Times. "In 'Sleeping Beauty', Lew Archer finds himself the confidant of a wealthy, violent family with a load of trouble on their hands--including an oil spill, a missing girl, a lethal dose of Nembutal, a six-figure ransom, and a stranger afloat, face down, off a private beach. Here is Ross Macdonald's masterful tale of buried memories, the consequences of arrogance, and the anguished relations between parents and their children. Riveting, gritty, tautly written, 'Sleeping Beauty' is crime fiction at its best." "Ross Macdonald remains the grandmaster, taking the crime novel to new heights by imbuing it with psychological resonance, complexity of story, and rich ness of style that remain awe inspiring. Those of us in his wake owe him a debt that can never be paid." Jonathan Kellerman. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

        "Dorade"

1973 or 1978. Mixed media on blue composition board. Signed "Arbib 73" or "Arbib 78". Framed. A Richard Arbib personal luxury car, modelled on the Cadillace Eldorado It's not clear whether the written date on this piece is 73 or 78, but it is definitely by Richard Arbib and definitely in keeping with the look of the 1970's Cadillac Eldorados. In the license plate spot, he has written "Dorade" and there are two shields very similar in shape to the Cadillac emblem. The Dorade is a Mediterranean Bass, the Dorado is a much larger fish known also as the dolphinfish and mahi-mahi. Eldorado however comes from El Dorado, the mythical City of Gold, thought by the conquistadors to exist in South America. Arbib's "Dorade" has nice lines and unusual features. The car is a large two door coupe with a huge hatchback type back window that extends over the trunk. The back lights are recessed into new style fins that extend backwards but not above the plane of the trunk. There are stylized sun roofs above driver and passenger. There are two views given, one from the side and one from the back.
