New York: Richard C. Higgins and The Rembrandt Players, 1973. Very good. 4to. Red brad-bound cardboard covers. Wear to yapp edge. Faint toning internally. Near fine overall. An original script of a play from the editor and publisher of Something Else Press. Described by the Fluxus writer as "a lickety split mystery,” DEATH & THE NICKEL CIGAR is a philosophical, Dada-esque/Theatre of the Absurd-inspired production, but otherwise remains a rather elusive work in the Higgins oeuvre. DICK HIGGINS: A Bio/Bibliography(Threadneedle Editions, 1979) lists the title under 1972 as an "ephemeral publication," but provides no details. And Richard Kostelanetz (DICTIONARY OF THE AVANT GARDE pp. 100-101) mentions the work (by title only) as representative of one of Higgins' "five methods" - "Expressionism" ("reflects personality or personal experience"), but again provides no elaboration. It does not appear to have ever been officially published and it is unclear if the work was even ever performed. The title page directs inquiries to Jerry Benjamin, performance artist and poet, who often directed in the experimental theater community (including other works of Higgins'). OCLC located seven copies of the script. A scarce and curious work from this prolific Fluxus figure.

New York: Delacorte Press, (1973). First Edition. hardcover. Typical but in this case barely noticeable sunning to the very edges of the boards; unknown name, address, and date on the front pastedown completely covered by the inside flap of the dustwrapper. The date "March 1973" would make this a very early copy of the first edition as the publication date for this title was announced as 7 May 1973. The dustwrapper is complete but for a very tiny chip at the top front corner. The only other defects to the dustwrapper are mild wear to the head of the spine and a vertical crease down the inside front flap. Near Fine in a Near Fine dustwrapper. A very attractive copy. O'Brien's first book, rather uncommon in the first printing, SIGNED by the author on the title page.

        The Complete Greed

New York: E. P. Dutton & Co., Inc.,, 1973. A reconstruction of the film in 348 still photos following the original screenplay. Plus 52 production stills. Compiled and Annotated with a Foreword by Herman G. Weinberg. Quarto. Printed card wrappers, as issued. Portrait frontispiece, and numerous black and white photographs in the text throughout. Extremities rubbed, creases to spine and front wrapper, some light marks, internally clean. A very good copy. Presentation copy inscribed by Paul McCartney of the first paperback edition (originally published in the preceding year by Arno Press) of the book that reconstructed from film stills Erich von Stroheim's infamously butchered and lost ten hour magnum opus (described in such terms as the "Holy Grail" and the "Magna Carta" of film) that was only ever shown as the two-and-a-half hour film Greed in 1924. The inscription, on the half-title, is from Paul McCartney to Bernard Herrmann, "To Benny from Paul - you'll have to supply the score for yourself - I'm sure you'll have no trouble. I hope we can work together again." Herrmann was a classical musician who also pioneered into electronic music; the Beatles reputedly based the strings in Eleanor Rigby on Herrmann's famous strings for Alfred Hitchcock's film Psycho. Herrmann met and befriended McCartney, and helped him with with the scoring of The Family Way. This copy includes, laid in, a lengthy contemporary review of the book clipped from a magazine.

North Vietnamese Diary and Photo Album

[N.p.: n.p., 1973-1974]. Near fine in soft boards.. Unique handwritten diary and photo album by North Vietnamese war correspondent and photographer Le Minh Truong, documenting his journey along the Ho Chi Minh Trail from North Vietnam to Saigon between 1973 and 1974. Le Minh Truong was one of the most venerated photographers in Vietnam during the second half of the 20th century, recognized for his black-and-white photographs, styled in the tradition of Social Realism, but never at the expense of art. A pioneering documenter of the Ho Chi Minh Trail, Truong famously developed his photographs while on location, carrying chemicals along his trek and washing his prints in nearby streams. This notebook comprises Truong's revered images of this politically significant route, viewed as both a supply lifeline to South Vietnam and a contributing factor to the North's victory. During his lifetime, Truong was featured in various international exhibitions and publications, including the 2002 National Geographic book Another Vietnam: Pictures of the War From the Other Side and the corresponding exhibition at the International Center for Photography, New York. At the time of his death in 2012, an exhibition of over 100 prints of his work was staged at the Vietnam News Agency. This diary includes approximately 120 pages of writing and photographs, many with evocative thumbnail images in place of text, or supplementing it; approximately 216 photographs in all. Subjects vary, with images of fellow soldiers and armed troops alongside photos of family members, flowers, and the Vietnamese countryside. The photographs are accompanied by approximately 16 pages of text in Vietnamese, written in a meticulous script, composed largely in six-line stanzas of verse. An Air Mail letter from Paris, addressed to Le Minh Truong, has been laid in. An incredible document of civilian and military life in wartime Vietnam and a unique collection of vintage prints by one of the most critically acclaimed Vietnamese photographers of the 20th century.

        The Samuelson Sampler

Glen Ridge, New Jersey: Thomas Horton and Company, 1973. First edition. Octavo, original blue cloth. In very good condition. Signed and dated by the author on the title page. Paul Samuelson is one of the developers of both neo-Keynesian and neoclassical economics, the latter of which still dominates mainstream economics. He was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for having written considerable parts of economic theory, and he is one of the ten Nobel Prize winning economists still signing the Economist's statement opposing the Bush tax cuts. One of Samuelson's many novel contributions was that he generalized and applied mathematical methods developed for the study of thermodynamics to the field of economics. His inspiration for doing so came, in part, from his mentor, polymath Edwin Bisdwell Wilson who was a former Yale student of the founder of chemical thermodynamics, Willard Gibbs. Samuelson, therefore, is a successful example of interdisciplinarity, and he combined these ideas in his magnum opus Foundations of Economic Analysis (1947).

        Gravity's Rainbow

New York: The Viking Press, 1973 First edition, first printing. A fine copy with slight wear to the spine head, front panel decorated with an arch in blind tooling, else without blemish, in a bright and unclipped dust jacket, with only some very minor offsetting to the top edges of the flaps, overall a very attractive, superb copy without any of the usual spine fading. After establishing himself as a great American writer in the early 1960s, Thomas Pynchon waited seven years after his second novel to publish his third novel, Gravity's Rainbow, which was received with much anticipation. A dense and complex novel, Gravity's Rainbow is set in Europe in the later years of World War II and utilizes many of the same characters and themes of his first novel, V. In this National Book Award winning text, Pynchon explores the romantic and pragmatic aspects of paranoia and death in a depressing yet brilliant work of literature. This contradiction is epitomized in Gravity Rainbow's nomination for the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction, which it nearly won until the committee dismissed the work for vulgar subject matter.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
