        The First Collected Works. Centenary Limited Edition;

      London: Library of Imperial History in association with the Hamlyn Publishing Group Ltd,, 1973–6. [together with:] The Collected Essays. Centenary Limited Edition. Together, 38 volumes, octavo. Original full vellum with 22-carat gold blocking, including titles to spines, armorial device to front boards and ruling to spines and front boards, gilt edges, marbled endpapers, printed on Archive Long-Life Text Paper. Housed in the original green leatherette slipcases stamped with the Churchill arms in gilt. Illustrations throughout, as plates and to the text. Typical natural variation to the tone of the vellum bindings but overall a bright set with a 2cms tear to the foot of the spine on volume 1. Slipcases lightly marked. Overall an excellent set. First complete collected edition, one of 1,750 sets published. The Centenary Edition is the only full collected works of Winston Churchill, reproducing his 50 books in 34 volumes. The Library of Imperial History went bankrupt before the projected run of 3,000 sets could be completed, so "the print run never exceeded 2,000 copies and only 1,750 sets were ever published" (Cohen). "The specifications were titanic: five million words in 19,000 pages, weighing 19 lbs, taking up 4½ ft of shelf space. To achieve publication, 11 publishing houses in Great Britain, the United States and Canada released their individual copyrights in exchange for the promise that no other complete edition of Churchill works would be published until the expiration of international copyright in 2019" (Richard M. Langworth). This set is accompanied by the four-volume Centenary Limited Edition of Churchill's collected essays and journalistic writings, again intended to be limited to 3,000 sets, not always present.

        Lune Enchantée: Une Imagerie Racontée et Dessinée d'après le Conte de Charles Perrault, La Belle au Bois Dormant

      Paris: Adrien Maeght, 1973. First edition of this pictorial retelling of Sleeping Beauty, produced in the wake of the first moon landing, and set in outer space. Originally a designer of corporate logos and trademarks, the Swiss artist Warja Lavater had a genius for the right symbol. In the late 1950s, she began to translate classic fairy tales into visual language, using minimalist graphic codes and keys. Like her contemporary Bruno Munari, Lavater combined the conventions of the picture book with the ideal of the "book-object" to create a playful new kind of artist's book. The folding leporello format appealed to her as a medium, she explained, because it could "be transformed into sculpture, standing on the ground, or hung, unfolded, on the wall." The first of Lavater's folding "imageries" was William Tell, published by the Museum of Modern Art in 1962. Paris publisher Adrien Maeght issued a series of her symbolic fairy tales in the years to come, including Little Red Riding Hood (Le Petit Chaperon Rouge, 1965), Cinderella (Cendrillon, 1974), Snow White (Blanche Neige, 1974), and a smaller separate treatment of Sleeping Beauty (La Belle au Bois Dormant, 1974). This early galactic interpretation of Sleeping Beauty, bound with a hook for hanging, is unusual not only in its much larger size, but also in its incorporation of text into the visual narrative. The characters are represented by vibrantly colored symbols of the space age, with the princess as the sleeping moon in orbit, awaiting her rocketship prince. A fine copy. Single one-sided color lithographed pictorial sheet folded leporello-style, measuring 12 inches high x 73 inches long, original blue cloth spine and rear board, front board covered in color lithographed pictorial paper, front pastedown printed as title page, metal hook anchored on cloth below title for hanging. A few faint marks to front board.

        [Photographs]: Motorcycle Racing Photographs (1958-1973)

      Philadelphia and others, 1973. Near Fine. A collection of approximately 280 snapshots (and about 10 additional small contact proofs) of motorcycles, motorcycle racing, and midget car racing. Various sizes, mostly a variation on 4.25" x 3", with some both smaller and larger; both black and white and color. A good percentage are captioned on the rear with places and some name, and many have either handwritten or stamped dates. Most are dated between 1958-1963, a few with later dates (the latest in 1973). The photos are centered around the business and motorcycle racing career of Ed LaBelle (1928-2010) who owned a motorcycle shop, Ed LaBelle Cycle Sales, in Philadelphia. Born in Landsdowne, Pennsylvania, and after service in WWII, he was a professional motorcycle racer, the three-time winner of the Canadian national championship, and held a world record in England, while simultaneously designing, customizing, and selling bikes.Most of the images show bike races and rallies including several identified in Canada, Laconia, Daytona, the Langhorne Scramble, and Atsion, New Jersey, sometimes with details of the bikes, the other riders, and how LaBelle fared in the race. A very few seem like they might have been taken in England or Europe. The images are unusually focused on bikes and racing, and except for a modest amount of images of midget race cars and contemporary sports cars, which LaBelle also apparently raced and designed, are almost entirely devoted to bikers and bike racing.A wonderfully chronology and subject specific accumulation of images.

        Snapshot Archive of Small Town American Auto Racing

      Circa 1973-1995. Photographs are uniformly near fine with some notations to verso; organized into 97 packets.. Archive of 418 original snapshots, 5 x 3 1/2 inches, many with notations to verso, documenting 97 racetracks, primarily in the American Midwest, but also stretching from New York State to California. The photographer, one George A. Koyt (1938-2010), apparently spent over twenty years traveling cross-country to myriad small-town racetracks, especially in Iowa, Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Wisconsin, and Pennsylvania, where 50 of the tracks pictured were located. The unifying aesthetic of the archive is typological strategy; at each track, Koyt photographed the signage, and in the process, created a directory of American Midwestern vernacular graphic design. The photographs have been organized around the signage into packets, some with a single photo, others with up to a dozen additional photographs documenting various aspects of the racetrack, such as crowds and the actual races. Altogether, the archive captures both a homespun graphic language as well as recording a uniquely American popular culture of stock-car and sprint-car racing.

        People of the North Portal

      [Chicago: Barbara Crane, 1973]. Near fine in hand-stenciled wrappers, housed in a custom built clamshell box.. Unique maquette for an unrealized photobook. Quarto. Contains 35 original velox prints, either bound in or pasted to the pages along with drawn notations showing potential text layout. The mockup for the colophon page credits text to Paul Vanderbilt. People of the North Portal, amongst Barbara Crane's earliest projects, captured portraits of people as they exited the north portal entrance of Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. At once conceptual and humanistic, these candid images, seemingly all taken from one fixed point, communicate both the mechanical register of a public building while also capturing personal and private moments. Crane studied with Aaron Siskind at the Institute of Design, and is Professor Emeritus in photography at the Art Institute of Chicago. The artist's work has been widely collected and can be found in the permanent collections of the National Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C.; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson; the Getty Museum, Los Angeles; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the High Museum, Atlanta; and the Bibliothéque Nationale, among others.

        Lengthy typed letter signed from Stan Brakhage to Will Petersen

      N.p.: N.p., 1973. Lengthy typed letter signed from Stan Brakhage to Will Petersen, roughly 500 words, dated May 28, 1973. Petersen was the director of the Creative Arts Center at West Virginia University, and Brakhage's letter confirms an upcoming talk at the university and answers in some detail a number of Petersen's questions. With Brakhage's holograph signature in black ink at the closing: "Blessings / Stan." Included is the original mailing envelope, with Brakhage's Rollinsville, Colorado PO Box address, postmarked May 29, 1973. Several ink notations on the envelope, presumably by Petersen, some relating to thoughts on Brakhage. After briefly confirming transporation and terms for his talk, Brakhage dives into several topics, including his reaction to Petersen's stone prints for a piece called the "Prefiguration," and how desperately he wishes he could transmit the same level of detail to his own work (i.e., the celluoid canvas), that he finds Frank Samperi difficult to read, "apropo art," Frank Oppenheimer, Stanley Hayter, and watercolor artist Emile Nolde. Not surprisingluyhdiscusses his reactions to art very broadly, and only conceptually in relation to his own work on celluloid--furthering and deepening the evidence that Brakhage really was more an artist than just an "experimental filmmaker," and that his knowledge and understanding of the work of his contemporaries was comprehensive, and fully integrated into his own. One page, 8.5 x 11 inches. Near Fine.

      Seuil 1973 - - Seuil, Paris 1973, 13x18cm, broché. - Edition originale pour laquelle il n'a pas été tiré de grands papiers. Envoi autographe daté et signé de Roland Barthes à son proche ami l'universitaire Robert (Mauzi) : "Cher Robert, sans vous ennuyer trop par ce peu de littérature, mais avec ma fidèle affection. Roland." Témoignage de la grande complicité des deux hommes, qui formèrent une bande inséparable avec Michel Foucault et Louis Lepage. Mauzi, éminent spécialiste du XVIIIe siècle, inspira profondément Barthes dans sa recherche structuraliste. Dos légèrement insolé comme généralement. [AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] first edition for which it was not taken from large papers.         The Miernik Dossier

      New York: Saturday Review Press(1973). 1st edition, 1st printing - and this author's first novel. SIGNED by the author on the title page. The publisher's wrap-around DJ belly band is fully intact and unfaded (held in place by the removable DJ protector; not glued to the DJ). The book is in Fine condition - straight, clean, tight with only minimal softening of the cloth at the spine ends. It's bound in yellow boards with an embossed design on the front panel and a red cloth spine with gilt lettering. The dustjacket is Near Fine. It has no chips or tears, but the spine is sunned about one shade (you can see the original yellow under the belly band) though the red lettering of the author's name isn't faded at all. There's also a very narrow with no color loss surface scratch on the front panel near the outer edge that you can see when you hold the book slanted just right in bright light. No other faults. Really a remarkable copy of this author's scarce first novel, particularly since signed and with the belly band with Eric Ambler's endorsement intact and unfaded.; 8-1/2" x 5-3/4" x 1-1/8"; 278 pages; Signed by Author, 10, 20, 22, F/NF

This project, with individual exhibitions by students and teachers at CalArts/FAP, falls between CalArts' groundbreaking "Womanhouse" (1972) exhibition and the Feminist Art Festival (1974). It does not seem to be documented in the FAP archives (see finding aid: CalArts-003) or any other OCLC records.
