The image measures 10 1/4" wide x 15" high on artist board 15x20", signed by Hague. According to Hague himself, this was a very early portfolio piece of his dating from 1973, The colors are rich and the incredible detail draws the eye in to make sure to see every little fairy, frog and gnome.         People of the North Portal

[Chicago: Barbara Crane, 1973]. Near fine in hand-stenciled wrappers, housed in a custom built clamshell box.. Unique maquette for an unrealized photobook. Quarto. Contains 35 original velox prints, either bound in or pasted to the pages along with drawn notations showing potential text layout. The mockup for the colophon page credits text to Paul Vanderbilt. People of the North Portal, amongst Barbara Crane's earliest projects, captured portraits of people as they exited the north portal entrance of Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry. At once conceptual and humanistic, these candid images, seemingly all taken from one fixed point, communicate both the mechanical register of a public building while also capturing personal and private moments. Crane studied with Aaron Siskind at the Institute of Design, and is Professor Emeritus in photography at the Art Institute of Chicago. The artist's work has been widely collected and can be found in the permanent collections of the National Museum of American Art, Washington, D.C.; the Art Institute of Chicago; the Center for Creative Photography, Tucson; the Getty Museum, Los Angeles; the Museum of Modern Art, New York; the High Museum, Atlanta; and the Bibliothéque Nationale, among others.

Lengthy typed letter signed from Stan Brakhage to Will Petersen

N.p.: N.p., 1973. Lengthy typed letter signed from Stan Brakhage to Will Petersen, roughly 500 words, dated May 28, 1973. Petersen was the director of the Creative Arts Center at West Virginia University, and Brakhage's letter confirms an upcoming talk at the university and answers in some detail a number of Petersen's questions. With Brakhage's holograph signature in black ink at the closing: "Blessings / Stan." Included is the original mailing envelope, with Brakhage's Rollinsville, Colorado PO Box address, postmarked May 29, 1973. Several ink notations on the envelope, presumably by Petersen, some relating to thoughts on Brakhage. After briefly confirming transporation and terms for his talk, Brakhage dives into several topics, including his reaction to Petersen's stone prints for a piece called the "Prefiguration," and how desperately he wishes he could transmit the same level of detail to his own work (i.e., the celluoid canvas), that he finds Frank Samperi difficult to read, "apropo art," Frank Oppenheimer, Stanley Hayter, and watercolor artist Emile Nolde. Not surprisingluyhdiscusses his reactions to art very broadly, and only conceptually in relation to his own work on celluloid--furthering and deepening the evidence that Brakhage really was more an artist than just an "experimental filmmaker," and that his knowledge and understanding of the work of his contemporaries was comprehensive, and fully integrated into his own. One page, 8.5 x 11 inches. Near Fine.

[AUTOMATIC ENGLISH TRANSLATION FOLLOWS] first edition for which it was not taken from large papers.         The Miernik Dossier

New York: Saturday Review Press(1973). 1st edition, 1st printing - and this author's first novel. SIGNED by the author on the title page. The publisher's wrap-around DJ belly band is fully intact and unfaded (held in place by the removable DJ protector; not glued to the DJ). The book is in Fine condition - straight, clean, tight with only minimal softening of the cloth at the spine ends. It's bound in yellow boards with an embossed design on the front panel and a red cloth spine with gilt lettering. The dustjacket is Near Fine. It has no chips or tears, but the spine is sunned about one shade (you can see the original yellow under the belly band) though the red lettering of the author's name isn't faded at all. There's also a very narrow with no color loss surface scratch on the front panel near the outer edge that you can see when you hold the book slanted just right in bright light. No other faults. Really a remarkable copy of this author's scarce first novel, particularly since signed and with the belly band with Eric Ambler's endorsement intact and unfaded.; 8-1/2" x 5-3/4" x 1-1/8"; 278 pages; Signed by Author, 10, 20, 22, F/NF

Groot Abecedarium. (Met een inleiding door Prof. G.W. Ovink).

The Wicker Man (Post Production Script, September 1973)

Pinewood Studios, London 1973 - Cutting and Continuity script for the 1973 film, "The Wicker Man," directed and written for the screen by Robin Hardy and starring Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee. An important and rare document that details a now-classic film that from the beginning experienced serious complications. The original film negatives were mistakenly destroyed, followed by years of spurious and unauthorized editing by various distributors (the film did not even screen in the US until 1975). Even today's "director's cut" is only roughly reconstructed from various existing prints, with a relatively long discourse regarding the origins of his island's culture and fruit by Lee's character, Lord Summerisle, still completely missing. This continuity represents the film's original, unexpurgated edit. The front wrapper reads "Printed in London / September 1973," and the film debuted in England in December of that same year, making this likely one of the earliest printed continuities, if not the first. Laid in is a cast and credits list that notes a running time of 86 minutes (contrasted with the most recent reconstruction, which runs 100 minutes). Green card wrappers, with credits on the title page for director-screenwriter Hardy and producer Peter Snell. 192 pages, long sheets, prong binding at the top edge. Very Good or better condition overall. Weldon 1983. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

        Sky and Earth: Variable Landscape

Newark, VT: Janus Press, 1973. First Edition. Hardcover Hardcover. Fine. 39 sheets of colored acetate and die-cut paper, in a folding cloth portfolio. 8 by 10 inches (roughly). In this wordless book (the only text is the title and publishing information, printed on the front pastedown), Van Vliet reinterprets the ideas in her landmark 1964 work, Sun, Sky, and Earth. In that book, flaps of various shapes and colors could be flipped open to create minimalist landscapes abstracted to simple shapes and colors. Some of the flaps included descriptive words. In this 'book', Van Vliet has abstracted not only the elements of landscape but the book itself. The 'flaps' are no longer attached to the binding, leaving the 'reader' (there is no text, but what else would we call the user of a book?) free to rearrange the sheets at will. One can even conjure a science fiction landscape of many suns, rising or setting in a sky of unearthly colors. Van Vliet's work in the 1960s and early 1970s is sometimes associated with the Fluxus Movement, and certainly this book, with its inherently random user experience, embodies some of those ideas, books have always exerted only loose control over their readers and they are experienced only in the imagination. It only took visual artists 15 centuries to work out what users of the codex have known all along. One of 100 unnumbered copies (see Ruth Fine, The Janus Press). A small limitation and given that institutions hold more than half of the print run, rather uncommon in commerce. First edition (first printing). A fine, complete copy.
