New York, n.d. [1973] - Octavo, 8 1/2 x 11 inches, 306 leaves. Copy-edited ribbon copy used by Delacorte Press to typeset the book. The manuscript is signed and dated 4 April 1979 by Vonnegut on the second leaf. It includes the text of an October 1966 interview with Vonnegut by Robert Scholes and a bibliographical checklist of primary and secondary material. "Valuable for its perspective at a relatively early point in Vonnegut's career." - Anatomy of Wonder (1995) 9-124. Some of the leaves are frayed, worn, and/or dog-eared at edges but, overall. the manuscript is in good condition. Housed in a green cloth folding box. (#102871) [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Kiepenheuer & Witsch 1973 - [548]p. Original purple cloth, yellow lettering to spine. Portions of top and fore-edges lightly stained, minor bubbling to dustwrapper flaps. A nice association copy inscribed by White on ffep for Maria Prerauer who with her husband Curt translated the novel into German. The inscription reads: This is a re-print. Ristigouche and Its Salmon Fishing with a Chapter on Angling Literature. Edited by Colonel Henry A. Siegel and Harry C. Marschalk, Jr. With an Introduction by Arnold Gingrich and a Notice of Dean Sage by DeWitt Sage.

Angler's & Shooter's Press, Goshen Connecticut, 1973, - SAGE, Dean. The Ristigouche and Its Salmon Fishing with a Chapter on Angling Literature. Edited by Colonel Henry A. Siegel and Harry C. Marschalk, Jr.With an Introduction by Arnold Gingrich and a Notice of Dean Sage by DeWitt Sage. Goshen Connecticut: The Angler's & Shooter's Press, 1973. Second Edition, limited to 250 copies (of which this is #35). Pp. xxxviii, xvi, 304,[8], plates (two coloured, and signed, by illustrators Charles DeFeo & Ogden Pleissner), fldg. col. map. Lg. 4to. (12 7/8" x 10 1/8"). Full calf, raised bands, with gilt-stamped pictorial design within gilt rules to front board and gilt titling and decorative devices to compartments of spine, t.e.g., marbled endpapers. Name (B. E. Bensinger) of subscriber also discretelystamped in gilt to lower area of front board. Printed on Rives mould made paper and decorated throughout with reproductions of the original etched plates, text vignettes, chapter head-pieces and ornamental initials. The original 1888 edition of this book, of which only 105 copiers were produced, isrenowned among admirers and collectors of American and Canadian angling works for the uncompromising expense of procuring its illustrations and ornamental elements as well as for that lavished on its printing. Notable among those whose artistic talents contributed to the embellishing of the book were the Canadian painter and etcher, Henry Sandham, RCA (1842-1910, see DCB:XIII:923-5), the American etchers Stephen Parrish (father of Maxfield Parrish) and C. A. Platt, British etchers Anna Lea Merritt and Charles Oliver Murray and the Scottish engraver George W. Aikman. Apart from the Gingrich's 'Introduction' and 'Notice of Dean Sage' by Sage's great-nephew, DeWitt Sage, which together occupy 30 pages of text preliminary to the reprinting of Sage's volume itself, the publisher has appended a 20 page bibliography of works devoted entirely or in good part to Atlantic salmon angling. Contents:Chapter I - The River [Restigouche]; Chapter II - Canoes and Indians; Chapter III - Camp Harmony; Chapter IV - The Salmon; Chapter V - Tackle and Howto Use It; Chapter VI - The Salmon of the Matapedia Bridge; Chapter VII -Hours for Angling; Chapter VIII - The [Portage by] Waugan et Infra; ChapterIX - The Season of 1885; Chapter X - The Adventures of 1886; Chapter XI -Angling Literature. This copy comes in a custom-made, felt-lined slipcase of recent making, the slipcase being covered in brown fabricoid in imitationof morocco, and having an ample, and tastefully fashioned, acetate windowon front allowing full view of the book's gilt cover design of an eagle inthe act of attempting to grasping a salmon which has imprudently drifted close to the river surface. Some minor imperfections of gilding to front cover. A fine copy nevertheless. 2,750.00 [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Marceau, Marcel. [Henry Miller]. Autographed & Illustrated Letter Signed. [SMILE AT THE FOOT OF THE LADDER]

M.M., Washington 1973 - "Like the clown we go through the motions, forever simulating, forever postponing the grand event. We die struggling to get born. We never were, never are. We are always in the process of becoming" - Henry Miller," - Epilogue. "The Smile At The Foot Of The Ladder, "I have designed my style pantomimes as white ink drawings on black backgrounds, so that man's destiny appears as a thread lost in an endless labyrinth." - Marcel Marceau. Marceau, Marcel. [Henry Miller]. AUTOGRAPHED AND ILLUSTRATED LETTER SIGNED. Washington, 1973 8vo., on blue tinted onion skin. A wonderful rambling letter & as much original art from Marceau in French scrawled across 13 pages [with small humorous illustrations on many pages], all about asking Miller for the rights at whatever price to make a film from Miller's "Smile At The Foot Of The Ladder". [Translation In part] " First of all, I send you my best wishes for the year 1973. . . with all the silences and heart of the Bip [flower]. I saw the drawing in your book. Thank you for including it. / It will always remind me of those unforgettable moments in Berchères. . . I understand you. Here's what it's about, I would absolutely want to produce the movie version of / "The smile at the foot of the ladder" / To put it simply, tell me if the book is still available for me to create an adaptation that will follow your Spirit and your heart. I am ready to buy the movie rights! You know I am just like you. . . Complex. . . but / without ambiguity and loyal! . . It's better to answer to God than to his saints. Also, from you - to me- in all honesty. . . give me the movie rights to the "smile". I wait in silence like a peasant on a mountain. . . I would really like / my first movie to be the "smile at the foot of the ladder". If the rights are taken and no one does anything with them like the American who wouldn’t go anywhere, then please give them to me. . . tell me the cost and I will be in Los Angeles in May. / Right now, we are touring universities and big cities in the United States. You book is really beautiful! I admired your drawings!!! One word from you / would make me happy if you want, Unhappy if it pleases you. . . Your pale Bip [flower]. . . who loves you like a brother / [Elaborate Bip Clown Illustration] Henry Miller With the faithful heart of the Bip [Flower] Always M.M. / If you agree, we will deal with the formalities in Los Angeles in June - (my heart is beating like a little girl's) / Faithfully with my heart and my friendly hand Your Bip Marcel Marceau" Marceau's interest in Miller’s novella "The Smile At The Foot Of The Ladder" is obvious - the book is the story of a clown named Auguste, whose one-dimensional fame causes an existential crisis of identity and a Siddhartha-like quest for spiritual meaning. Time Magazine review from 1948 adds: "Auguste's search for his true identity is a dangerous quest and it ends fatally, but not before he has discovered that ‘perhaps he was all right just as he was . . . The mistake he had made was to go beyond his proper bounds.’ " Karl Orend’s book, Henry Miller’s Angelic Clown: "Reflection on The Smile At The Foot Of The Ladder" (2007, Alyscamps Press) is a thorough analysis of Miller’s 1948 short novel. In his view, "Ladder" may not contain a writer character named Henry, but the clown named Auguste is reflective of the spiritual and philosophical core of Henry Miller. "More than any other text Henry Miller wrote," writes Orend, "The Smile At The Foot Of The Ladder gives us a concise and allegorical vision of the point towards which all his writing was aimed Apocatastasis and the attainment of Samadh." Published in 1948, Smile provided a spiritual ladder or bridge between his Colossus Of Maroussi (1941) & Big Sur & The Oranges of Hieronymus Bosch (1957). Marcel Marceau (1923 - 2007) was an internationally acclaimed French actor & the most acclaimed mime in the world, most famous for his persona as Bip the Clown.
