Autograph musical manuscript signed of De temporum fine comoedia. Das Spiel vom Ende der Zeiten. Undated, but ca. 1970

2 pp., being pages 143 and 144 of the full score. Large folio (416 x 318 mm.). Notated in ink and pencil on 30-stave music manuscript paper. Inscribed to Uli Märkle, a close collaborator and friend of the distinguished Austrian conductor Herbert von Karajan. Slightly worn. . De temporum fine comoedia (Play for the End of Time), a major work, was Orff's final musical statement. It was composed over a period of some ten years and had its first performance on August 20, 1973 at the Salzburg Music Festival under Herbert von Karajan with the Cologne Radio Symphony Orchestra. "The gestation of De temporum fine comoedia, which is the epitome of Orff’s theatrical work, began while he was working on Prometheus. The score to this ‘Spiel vom Ende der Zeiten’ was completed between 1970 and 1971, with texts taken from the Oracula sibyllina, an Orphic Hymn to Oneiros, and also from the Carmina Burana collection. Orff lends to a theological idea a theatrical form that was already present in Des Turmes Auferstehung: Origene’s ‘apokatástasis pánton’, namely the idea that the world returns to God with the consequence that all guilt is temporally finite. The vastness of this eschatological scenario feeds the visionary quality of this modern mystery play. And in the vision invoked by the Anachoretes one participates in the repentance of Lucifer, announced symbolically in the music by open 5ths to a blare of trumpets. There follows a transfiguring dematerialization of all musical parameters, then a canon for four viols. This symbolic mandala representing ‘Tà pánta Noûs’ (‘Everything is Spirit’) and closing with a reference to Anaxagoras, signifies both the end of the comoedia and of Orff’s creative career. " Alberto Fassone in Grove onlineWe would like to thank Ms. Sabine Fröhlich of the Orff-Zentrum in Munich for her kind assistance in the identification of this manuscript.

        Nadia (First Edition)

Tokyo: Mainichi Shinbunsha, 1973. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Soft cover. Fine. This is a first edition, first printing of the highly regarded photobook \"Nadia\" published by Mainichi Shinbunsha, Tokyo in 1973. Ryuichi Kaneko and Ivan Vartanian in their reference work on Japanese Photobooks, \"Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and 70s\" provide an excellent critique of \"Nadia\", \".in this work the nude becomes something close to the reader as opposed to a removed and unknowable beauty.the pursuit of photography here is self-fulfilling while it finds its ultimate subject in the nude form of a lover.A facsimile edition of \"Nadia\" was released as part of the Asahi Sonorama series. The initial printing was published in 1977, and the third printing was in 1982. The continued success of this volume reflects the photobook\'s appeal to young photographers who became reacquainted with the nude subject as something personal and intimate. Containing 90 black-and-white high quality gravure photographs, the book measures approximately 11 x 12 inches and is bound in photographically illustrated wraps. The condition of the book is FINE- with very minimal surface wear to the wraps. Cited in the reference work on Japanese Photobooks, Japanese Photobooks of the 1960s and 70s by Ryuichi Kaneko and Ivan Vartanian.

Chili September 1973 (First Edition, First Printing)

Amsterdam: De Bezigle Bij, 1973. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Soft cover. Fine. This is a first edition, first printing of Koen Wessing\'s critically acclaimed photobook Chili, September 1973 published by De Bezigle Bij, Amsterdam in 1973. The book describes the tense days of the military attempt to root out public opposition in the streets of Santiago after the fall of Salvador Allende to Augusto Pinochet\'s coup in 1973. Containing 24 black-and gravures (most of them double page) and measuring approximately 10.75 inches x 7.75 inches, the book is bound in illustrated wrappers. The book and wraps are in FINE condition with some very shallow creases that are common to this title because of the quality of the paper that was used in production. The wraps are protected with a mylar covering. Commenting on the book, Parr & Badger in their reference work, The Photobook: A History wrote, The Dutch photographer Koen Wessing was on the streets of Santiago immediately after the coup happened. His gritty documentary pictures were quickly published in this no frills, extremely elegant photobook . There are not many images in the book, but each is carefully considered, modest and succinct ... despite the difficulties of taking photographs in such a tense and difficult situation. The main thrust of the book is the coups immediate aftermath, the shock and grief of the people, the rounding up of Allendes supporters by the Army, and their herding into the now notorious National Stadium in Santiago, where many would be tortured and killed. Wessing vividly captures one of these executions, in a two-page sequence that forms the books climax.

Marilyn (Signed Limited Artists Edition with Signed Print)

Germany: Taschen, 2011. Limited Edition . Hardcover. As New. This is a signed limited edition artist\'s edition of published by Taschen, Germany in 2011 that had a limitation of 250 signed and numbered copies that includes an original signed print Bert Stern with this being number 240. This is not to be confused with the more common collector\'s edition that although signed does not contain the original signed print. From the publisher, \"Taschen has paired Mailer\'s original text (his 1973 biography Marilyn) with Bert Stern\'s extraordinary photographs - widely considered the most intimate ever taken of Monroe - to create a fitting tribute to the woman who, at the time of her death in 1962, was the world\'s most famous woman, a symbol of glamour and eroticism for an entire generation. This book, conceived by Lawrence Schiller, Mailer\'s collaborator on five works, combines the author\'s masterful text with Stern\'s penetrating images of the 36-year-old Marilyn. Photographed for Vogue magazine over three days at the Bel-Air Hotel, Marilyn had never allowed such unfettered access, nor had she looked so breathtakingly beautiful. Six weeks later, mysteriously, she was dead. In this bold synthesis of literary classic and legendary portrait sitting, Mailer and Stern lift the veils of confusion surrounding Monroe - the woman, the star, the sex symbol - and offer profound insight into an iconic figure whose true personality remains an enigma even today. Limited to a total of 1,962 numbered copies signed by Bert Stern, this book was available as a Collector\'s Edition (No. 251-1,962), and also in two Art Editions of 125 copies each (No. 1-250). This Art Edition of 125 numbered copies (No. 125-250), each signed by Bert Stern, comes with the pigment print on archival paper Contact Sheet, 1962, also signed by the photographer Stern. The book measures 17.5 x 14.5 inches and is a hardcover housed in a clamshell box which also contains the signed print which measures 16 x 12 inches. The condition of the book, print, and clamshell box is MINT and is still contained in the original publishers shipping carton.

The Eye of the Storm [Signed]

London: Jonathan Cape, 1973. First printing. Very Good +/near fine. A Very Good + copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original blue boards (minor pushing to the spine head, some fading to the top stain, modest indention line to the lower portion of the early pages, some tiny foxing spots and some light soiling to the the closed page block's leading edge), in a Near Fine dust jacket (very light sunning to the spine panel, light corner rubbing, some price sticker residue atop the easily readable publisher's price to the lower front flap), SIGNED BY PATRICK WHITE on the title page; Patrick White's ninth published novel, centered around a rich matriarch who has exerted a destructive iron grip on her family members and demanded love while not giving it, and whose children come to visit her as she lies dying, seeking to show her an unfelt sympathy while hiding their desire for her money and their expectations of the money's rescuing effect on their own lives. Patrick White won the 1973 Nobel Prize in Literature "for an epic and psychological narrative art which has introduced a new continent into literature". In presenting the Prize, Artur Lundkvist of the Swedish Academy stated: "One is struck by the frequency with which Patrick White has made his main characters to a greater or lesser degree outsiders in relation to society: aliens, maladjusted or retarded people and quite often mystics and zealots. It is as though in these people, destitute and vulnerable as they are, he found it easiest to discern the human qualities which fascinate him. This is the case with .... the all-pervading principal characters in White's two latest and largest novels: the artist in The Vivisector and the old woman in The Eye of the Storm. In the artist the creative urge is portrayed as a species of curse, as a result of which his art becomes an all-consuming effort of which both its practitioner and the people close to him become the victims. In the old woman the author has taken the experience of a cyclone as the mystical centre from which an insight radiates to shed light on her life, with its many misadventures, right up to the moment of her death." A Very Good + or better copy, SIGNED BY PATRICK WHITE.

The Eye of the Storm [Signed]

Jonathan Cape, London 1973 - A Very Good + copy of the first edition, first printing, in the Publisher's original blue boards (minor pushing to the spine head, some fading to the top stain, modest indention line to the lower portion of the early pages, some tiny foxing spots and some light soiling to the the closed page block's leading edge), in a Near Fine dust jacket (very light sunning to the spine panel, light corner rubbing, some price sticker residue atop the easily readable publisher's price to the lower front flap), SIGNED BY PATRICK WHITE on the title page; Patrick White's ninth published novel, centered around a rich matriarch who has exerted a destructive iron grip on her family members and demanded love while not giving it, and whose children come to visit her as she lies dying, seeking to show her an unfelt sympathy while hiding their desire for her money and their expectations of the money's rescuing effect on their own lives. This is the case with . the all-pervading principal characters in White's two latest and largest novels: the artist in The Vivisector and the old woman in The Eye of the Storm. [Attributes: First Edition]

Captain Cook's Florilegium. A selection of engravings from the drawings of plants collected by Joseph Banks and Daniel Solander on Captain Cook's first voyage to the islands of the Pacific, with accounts of the voyage by Wilfrid Blunt and of the botanical explorations and prints by W.T. Stearn

London: Royal College, 1973. Large folio, with 30 engravings; a fine copy, in the original black Nigerian goatskin and Japanese silk, housed in a protective buckram case (case slightly scuffed). The Royal College of Art edition. One of the finest botanical productions of all time. The Royal College of Art's printing of these original eighteenth-century copper-plates appeared in a very limited edition on specially handmade paper, presented in a customised binding by Zaehnsdorf of London. The edition was fully subscribed long before it was completed. When the first voyage returned to London, the original botanical drawings were made into detailed and accurate paintings under Banks' supervision, with reference to his collection of actual specimens. Following this they were engraved, and we know that Banks intended to oversee full publication of the collection of engravings. In fact, only a proof impression was made and the undertaking abandoned. The British Museum (Natural History) holds the original copper-engraved plates, as well as the drawings and specimens themselves, and a set of the proof impressions made from the copper-engravings. Between 1900 and 1905 lithographic copies were made of three hundred and eighteen of these proof impressions and published as Illustrations of the Botany of Captain Cook's Voyage round the World. The copper-plates themselves remained unused, until in 1960 it was decided that the Royal College of Art should print a selection of the most beautiful. The result, after thirteen years of planning and trials, was this splendid production, which for the first time showed the extraordinary strength of the images. Perfectly printed, rich impressions in strong black ink, they show the important botany of the Cook voyage to great advantage, and at the same time make it a matter for regret that no eighteenth-century edition appeared. This particular copy is stamped "Out of Series" on the limitation statement; it is accompanied by a copy of Joy Law's monograph on the book's production.

The Princess Bride: S. Morgenstern's Classic Tale of True Love and High Adventure

New York: Harcourt, Brace, Jovanovich, Inc., 1973 First edition, first printing. Publisher's light gray cloth, spine lettered in black and red; in the original dust jacket designed by Wendell Minor, with an illustration of a castle next to a skyscraper to the front panel, photograph of the author by Allen Case to the rear panel. A fine copy; unclipped dust jacket with minor crease to the top edge of the front panel, else fine. The Princess Bride is a fantasy romance novel by William Goldman, published as an abridged version of the fictional Simon Morgenstern's novel that contains only the "good parts." Throughout the text, Goldman expands on this pretense by including his own commentary in red to differentiate from Morgenstern's text in black, often citing differences between his text and the original as well as instances where he claims the publisher interfered, even "forcing" Goldman to make certain changes against his will. The Princess Bride tells the love story of Princess Buttercup and a farm boy named Wesley, whose true love unites them despite extreme odds and absurd obstacles that stand in their way. As the dust jacket claims, "It is unlike anything you have read before, a totally diverting entertainment laced with wry commentary on life and love by a masterful storyteller." The Princess Bride was adapted into a popular 1987 film by Rob Reiner, starring Robin Wright and Cary Elwes as Buttercup and Wesley.. 1st Edition. Hard Cover. Fine/Dust Jacket Included.
