The Samuelson Sampler.

Thomas Horton and Company, Glen Ridge, New Jersey 1973 - First edition. Octavo, original blue cloth. In very good condition. Signed and dated by the author on the title page. Paul Samuelson is one of the developers of both neo-Keynesian and neoclassical economics, the latter of which still dominates mainstream economics. He was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for having written considerable parts of economic theory, and he is one of the ten Nobel Prize winning economists still signing the Economist's statement opposing the Bush tax cuts. One of Samuelson's many novel contributions was that he generalized and applied mathematical methods developed for the study of thermodynamics to the field of economics. His inspiration for doing so came, in part, from his mentor, polymath Edwin Bisdwell Wilson who was a former Yale student of the founder of chemical thermodynamics, Willard Gibbs. Samuelson, therefore, is a successful example of interdisciplinarity, and he combined these ideas in his magnum opus Foundations of Economic Analysis (1947). A effective 1957 film, "The Incredible Shrinking Man," directed by Jack Arnold is based on a screenplay written by Matheson. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-721. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 4-219. The Sermon on the Mount from the Gospel of St. Matthew, Chapters 5, 6, 7

Worcester, MA: Achille J. St. Onge, 1973. 55pp. The text is printed with large ornamental initials in red by Joh. Enschedé en Zonen. In a striking designer binding by Stephen Conway, evoking ancient wood and stone. Conway writes that his bindings "have a tactile quality, in keeping with the three dimensional qualities of the book," and "a sort of earthy, minimalist look, hinting at the content." The central panel of the covers is comprised of plinth with three steps, covered in parchment stained with tones of copper and bronze. In the center is a cross cut from vellum. The four surrounding panels are covered with hand-painted paste paper patterned with wood grain, sealed with a matte wax finish. The panels are slightly separated, revealing underlays of black text between them. Conway also painted the endpapers with textural shades of brown and black, giving them the appearance of wood and bark. The spine is gilt-titled mahogany morocco. Following his belief that the box in which a book is housed is part of the overall work, and serves to enhance the viewer's experience, the book sits in a felt-lined compartment between the steps of a larger three-level plinth covered in hand-painted parchment. Conway was named a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 2000, and his work is held in collections worldwide, including the National Library of Scotland and The British Library. He is the current President of Designer Bookbinders. Extremely fine. (2 1/2 by 1 3/4; 64x43mm).

Bruccoli (1931-2008) studied bibliography under Bowers. The two would go on to collaborate in various capacities on a number of other projects, including works on Nabokov as well as parts of the Dictionary of Literary Biography, but this was the first. Signed by Comden, Green, and Styne on the first page. The music contains corrections in an unknown hand, but likely that of Styne. The music folds out to approximately ten feet long. Presumably this would have been produced in limited numbers, possibly for the musicians or composers themselves. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy]

        [Lithograph]: "Linear Fantasy"

1973. Original lithograph in black and orange. Image measures 11.75" x 18.25" (with margins 16" x 23.25"). Glazed and framed. Hand Inscribed, titled, Signed, and dated by Miller below the image: "For Sydney Omarr -- Linear Fantasy -- Henry Miller 1973." Surreal image with discernible human faces. Unexamined out of the frame, but all indications are that the lithograph is in fine condition. On the reverse is an old label, contemporary with the frame, indicating the lithograph was framed in Santa Monica, California. Omarr was a close friend of Miller's and famous as the "astrologer to the stars." He published a daily horoscope that appeared in more than 200 newspapers, and his books of horoscopes sold over 50 million copies. .
