M.M., Paris, n.d. c.1973 - Marceau, Marcel. [Henry Miller]. AUTOGRAPHED PROGRAM to Henry Miller. SIGNED. Folio, 9" 1/4 x 12". Illustrated wrappers, 24pp. Black & white photos of Bip & original Marceau drawings throughout, many full page. In fine condition. Inscribed on the front cover illustration of Bip the Clown by Marceau to Henry Miller: "À Henry Avec mon coeur et ma main amie fidèlement Votre Bip Marcel Marceau" [To Henry, Faithfully with my heart & my friendly hand Your Bip Marcel Marceau]. At the time of this presentation, Marceau was pleading his case to Miller for the rights to produce a film of Miller's "The Smile At The Foot Of The Ladder", Miller's novella about a clown named Auguste, whose one-dimensional fame causes an existential crisis of identity & a Siddhartha-like quest for spiritual meaning. Marceau's interest in the project was obvious. A fine association. "Like the clown we go through the motions, forever simulating, forever postponing the grand event. We die struggling to get born. We never were, never are. We are always in the process of becoming" - Henry Miller," - Epilogue. "The Smile At The Foot Of The Ladder, "I have designed my style pantomimes as white ink drawings on black backgrounds, so that man's destiny appears as a thread lost in an endless labyrinth." - Marcel Marceau.         Collection of Correspondence from Pin-Up Artist Alberto Vargas

1973 - A collection of 12 letters, cards, and publicity photos from Alberto Vargas and his wife, Anna Mae Clift, to a devoted collector, including an Autographed Note Signed ("Alberto") and three Christmas cards Signed with his stylized signature, fine. The letters and notes begin in 1961 and end shortly before the passing of Clift in 1973, a death from which Vargas never truly recovered. The letters are in response to complimentary notes sent by the collector to Vargas and include many references to his work. Each is composed with warmth and they include details about the couple's personal lives including Vargas's experience judging the Miss Universe contest and his lawsuits against *Esquire* magazine. (The magazine successfully laid claim to the term "Varga Girl" as well as the "Varga" signature, and the legal costs forced him to struggle financially for years until his 1960s "Vargas Girls" work for *Playboy*.) One of the Christmas cards includes a note from Vargas gifting the collector an unpublished original piece of artwork for being a "staunch defender and protector of 'my girls'"; a gift that sadly no longer accompanies the letter. The correspondence also includes five glossy publicity photos from World Wide Photo, dated between 1944-1949, showing Vargas with Clift, working at his drawing table, and with various models, along with the original prepared captions tipped on the verso. Several of the letters are written by Clift and one includes a comment about Vargas's devotion to his work: "He is truly a remarkable person. But without his work he would be lost." It's a particularly poignant thought from his wife, whose death left him devastated and ended his career. Further details available upon request. An interesting and thoughtful collection of correspondence and photos from one of the greatest pin-up artist of the 20th Century, and the wife who inspired his work. Further details available upon request.

        CHILD OF GOD

NY: Random House, (1973) - First Edition of the celebrated author's acclaimed third novel, a chilling, brilliantly executed work exploring the limits of human degradation. A truly close to fine copy in like dust jacket of a book which has become exceedingly scarce, particularly in this condition. The problems are these: some strip of water damage to the topedge pages, extending to the top of rear endpaper verso and top of rear board. Although relatively minimal, this certainly prevents a classification of Fine, yet aside from this the copy is tight, straight and obviously unread. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

The Longest Yard (Original screenplay, rainbow copy)

Paramount, Los Angeles 1973 - Revised Final Script for the 1974 film, "The Longest Yard," directed by Robert Aldrich, written for the screen by Tracy Keenan Wynn and Albert S. Ruddy (though only Wynn is credited here), and starring Burt Reynolds, Eddie Albert, and Bernadette Peters. Ex-football star Burt Reynolds ends up in a prison run by sadistic sports-nut Warden Eddie Albert. Reynolds is strong-armed into forming an inmate football team, which instills an unexpected esprit de corps previously lacking in the prisoners' lives. Using an element normally only found in boxing pictures, Reynolds is pressured by the opposing team (run by the prison guards, of course) to throw the game or else forfeit his parole. The football game that consumes the last third of the film is one of the more impressive set pieces of early 1970s cinema. Green studio wrappers, with die-cut title window on the front wrapper, gilt-stamped with the Paramount logo. Title page present, stating REVISED FINAL, with a date of September 6, 1973, and a credit for screenwriter Wynn. 120 leaves, mechanically reproduced, with yellow, blue, and pink revision pages throughout (a "rainbow" copy, consisting almost entirely of rewrites), dated variously between 9/19/73 and 10/15/73. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound with two gold brads. In a custom quater leather clamshell box. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

The items present include a typed letter Signed by Dr. Montagu stating that he refused to lend Moon any legitimacy by attending the conferences (and noting that he had advised the organizer, Nobel laureate Prof. Eugene Wigner, of the same), a typed letter Signed by Nobel laureate Robert S. Mulliken and by several others -- including Amitar Etzioni, who later withdrew from the conference -- advising invitees to the Fourth International Conference that there was no religious agenda in question, and a typed letter Signed by Moon himself (written on the letterhead of the International Cultural Foundation) presenting this copy of the 1973 proceedings. Also present are Vol. XXI, No. 45 of the Princeton Spectrum newspaper (featuring Allen Tate Wood's article "The Dark Side of Sun Myung Moon"), a New York Times clipping in which Prof. Kai Nielsen offers reasons why scholars should shun conferences sponsored by Moon, and a magazine article listing some of the scientists who chose to attend the fourth annual conference as well as some of those who stayed away. .

AMERGIN. The White Stag: An Enigma of the Forest. The ORIGINAL 1st DRAFT MSS.

1973 - Sven Berlin was a poet, a painter, a sculptor, a dancer and a writer. His 1962 roman-a-clef novel The Dark Monarch, a work written with the prime motive of venting Berlin's personal anger over the hypocrisies of an over- close and competitive art St. Ives art colony, was not well received by his fellow art colony members, who all too easily recognized themselves within the pages of the text. The book was withdrawn after four successful libel actions. Contrary to what some writers report, Berlin did not abandon the genre of fiction following the unpleasantness that The Dark Monarch brought. In 1964 he published his novel Jonah's Dream: A Meditation on Fishing, a volume full of Berlin's accomplished and sensitive vignettes of fish and fishermen, and in 1971, his knowledge of the gypsy counter-culture emerged in his novel Dromengo: Man of the Road. It would be a full seven years before Amergin appeared. The story is a mystical fable of encounters between a man, a woman, and a stag in ÒThe Great Forest in the South.Ó Berlin writes of himself:I have always had to contend with the problems of painting, sculpture, and writing as three aspects of one personal express in an attempt to reach full realization and understanding of the world in which I find myself, which is the purpose of my life - and to investigate material experience with spirit by imagination. Beauty of form with poetic insight is the unattainable target.Chris Stevens of the Guardian wrote on January 4, 2000: ÒSven Berlin, who has died aged 88, was a dancer, painter, sculptor, poet, and writer of fiction, biography and autobiography. As one of the last great British bohemians, he established a reputation in the conservative environment of postwar St. Ives, with his long hair, beard, eccentric dress and earring. Sadly, his fame was never matched by his reputation as an artist.ÓMany of Berlin's publications drew upon personal experience. Berlin was part of the D-Day invasions of World War II, having rejected his former stance of conscientious objector, but the experience led to a breakdown and he returned to Cornwall to find restitution through his art. From that time on, the redemptive, restorative and spiritual power of art and nature would remain his guiding principle. The same theme runs through his works, including the two volumes of his 'autosvenography': The Coat of Many Colours and Virgo in Exile, that being a belief in the abstract and mystical forces that guide both nature and humankind. His writing is rich in imagery and metaphor, exhibiting an often dream-like quality. This manuscript is no exception. Hand-made paper wrappers. 39 cream, clay-coated A4 leaves (23 x 32 cm.) and one sheet (25.3 x 20.3 cm.) comprising the text; 14 (twelve 20.3 x 25.3 cm. and two 20.3 x 19.8 cm.) loose sheets containing splendid pen and ink (black) drawings used as illustrations; one sheet with Berlin's notes in blue ink as to placement of the illustrations (17.3 x 10 cm.); and one sheet (20.3 x 30.4 cm.) with chapter notes, directions to the typist, table of contents, etc., written in red, blue, green and black ink. An intriguing manuscript written in Berlin's strong hand with his large, bold illustrations, rich in imagery and metaphor; an important and interesting artifact of this fascinating and colorful novelist/artist.

RED BADGE OF COURAGE - A Facsimile Edition of the Manuscript

Washington DC: NCR / Microcard Editions, 1973. First edition thus. Hardcover. Very good. 2 red cloth 4to. volumes in matching slipcase. Books near fine in a very good or better slipcase. Limited edition, one of 1000 numbered copies, this #24. THE DEDICATION COPY, inscribed by Fredson Bowers to Matthew Bruccoli to the dedication page in first voume: "...who had the imagination to / want this and then the courage / to get it into print - / Fredson Bowers / 6 July 1973." Additionally initialed by Bruccoli and signed by Frazer Clark to title page, the latter noting "Matt's copy." Also laid in is a TLS, about 65 words, from Bruccoli to Bowers expressing his pride at the final production of RED BADGE, his honor at being able to publish Bowers, and his joy at the dedication. He goes on to report positive initial orders and his expectations for the book's success. Below, on the same page, Bowers has typed his response, about 75 words. In it he expresses his wish that a different cloth for the binding had been used and suggesting the possibility of a cheaper reprint. Signed by Bowers below. Bruccoli (1931-2008) studied bibliography under Bowers. The two would go on to collaborate in various capacities on a number of other projects, including works on Nabokov as well as parts of the Dictionary of Literary Biography, but this was the first. An exceptional association between two of the most preeminent bibliographers (indeed arguable THE two most) of the 20th century.

NY: Viking, (1973) - Fine First Edition copy of the reclusive author's landmark third novel. At 760 pages, a massive opus in breadth and scope, as well as in major literary significance, this winner of the National Book Award was also awarded the prestigious William Dean Howells Medal for best work of fiction to appear in the United States over a five-year period. While many less-than-presentable copies appear on the market, this copy is truly fine, in its original first state dust jacket, bright and crisp, without the spine-fading endemic to this title, equally fine but for a single half-inch closed tear to the upper real panel and the most miniscule, really negligible, rubbing to the tips. A beautiful example. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

1973. Original lithograph in black and orange. Image size: 11.75" x 18.5" (with margins 16" x 23.25"). Glazed and framed. Hand Inscribed, titled, signed, and dated by Miller below image: "For Sydney Omarr -- 'D'apres Schatz -- Henry Miller 1973." Scene of the inside of an apartment with a naked man smoking on a bed, while a naked woman washes at a sink, and with a horse in the foreground. Unexamined out of the frame, but all indications are that the lithograph is in fine condition. Old label, contemporary with the frame, indicating the lithograph was framed in Santa Monica, California. Omarr was a close friend of Miller's and the "astrologer to the stars." He published a daily horoscope that appeared in more than 200 newspapers and his books of horoscopes sold over 50 million copies. He started out during the Second World War at the age of 17 when his predictions of horse races, boxing matches, and other sporting events were broadcast on Armed Forces Radio. Like Miller, Omarr surrounded himself with beautiful women and was the personal adviser to Jayne Mansfield, Rita Hayworth, Kim Novak, and Mae West, among others. .

        Picture Book II [SIGNED]

Zeitlin & Ver Brugge, Los Angeles 1973 - 1/1000. 8vo. Unpaginated. Illustrated wrappers in original paper covered illustrated slipcase. Pages unopened. "'Picture Book II' is the clearest and most direct of titles. Yet its very simplicity calls for some comment in this complex age. It is indeed a book of pictures - pictures which are unified only by being the work of a single man. Jean Charlot considers it a collection of some of his personal motifs, analogous to a Liber Studiorum of an earlier age. Many subjects will be familiar to those who know the artist's oeuvre, though they wear new colors and new composition." Stunningly illustrated with 32 full page multi-color lithographs which the artist prefers to call 'chromolithographs.' Each plate is accompanied with text written by Charlot. Includes an additional color lithograph "Hawaiian Swimmer" signed in pencil by Charlot which is different from the one depicted in the book. This plate was not part of this edition and is laid-in. Colophon page is also signed by the artist and the printer, Lynton R. Kistler. A wonderful edition with both slipcase and book in very good - fine condition. Mead A3a. "'A screaming comes across the sky.' One of the most famous opening lines in literature might as well refer to the novel it sets off —Gravity's Rainbow, Thomas Pynchon's masterpiece, marks an event in literary history whose significance readers have argued and will argue for a long time, but which nobody can afford to ignore. Published in 1973, it is often considered as the postmodern novel, redefining both postmodernism and the novel in general." (Literary Encyclopedia) "This is the war book to end them all." (Burgess 99). Winner of the National Book Award for 1974. An outstanding copy of the author's scarce second and finest novel.
