        Skin Summer

Oval Books 1973 - GRACIE AMBER (DEAN KOONTZ penname) - SKIN SUMMER (book was originally published under the "Ann Griffin" penname), copyright 1970, published by Oval in 1973 (originally published by Cameo in 1970). This book is one of a number of 30 or so books that Dean Koontz wrote for Cameo books early in his career under various pennames (like Linda Mitchell or Leonard Chris), and one book he actually published under his own name (Bounce Girl). Dean Koontz has since disavowed and otherwise denied having ever written such books (besides Bounce Girl which was published under his own name and the Leonard Chris book "Hung"), but the evidence is undisputable: The Library of Congress confirms that Gerda Ann Koontz (Dean's wife) holds the copyrights to this book. "Gracie" is one of the five names listed in the dedication of the gothic romance "Demon Child" (which Koontz wrote under the penname of Deanna Dwyer). All five of the first names listed in the dedication of "Demon Child" have turned out to be pseudonyms that Dean had used for this particular "Adult" literature. In an article written by Dean Koontz entitled "Dean's Drive" in the sci-fi fanzine Energumen #8 (6/71), Dean Koontz admitted to writing 30 of these books in 1970 (including "Share The Warm Flesh" and "Flesh Wager" - this book), along with Pig Society and The Underground Lifestyles Handbook (both of which were also published by the same publisher, Cameo books in 1970). One of the titles that Dean Koontz admits to having written ("Thirteen and Ready") was written under the penname of Ann Griffin. In an early sci-fi fanzine, Beabohema #8 (1970), Dean Koontz again talked about writing these books. The authors initials (A.G.) are simply Dean's wife's initials in reverse. One of the Ann Griffin cameo books "Protest Ball," lists the author's address as Harrisburg, Pennsylviania (where Dean and his wife were living in 1970). Finally, in Dean Koontz's writing how-to book "How to Write Popular Fiction" (1972), he refers to these books and specifically to the Ann Griffin penname. Book has no vertical spine creasing, no spine lean, no cover creases, no soiling or staining to covers, no former owner markings or used bookstore markings inside, no missing pages, couple of creased page corners, pages are flat and tight, pages are not age yellowing, remainder mark (cut mark) at bottom page edge near spine), almost no edge wear, no color rubbing wear to covers, slight spine sun yellowing. Overall a FINE- book of this rare 1970s Dean Koontz pen name book. I have a number of other U.S. and U.K. Dean Koontz 1st printing hardcover/ paperback/magazine appearances up for sale.         The Samuelson Sampler.

Thomas Horton and Company, Glen Ridge, New Jersey 1973 - First edition. Octavo, original blue cloth. In very good condition. Signed and dated by the author on the title page. Paul Samuelson is one of the developers of both neo-Keynesian and neoclassical economics, the latter of which still dominates mainstream economics. He was awarded the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences for having written considerable parts of economic theory, and he is one of the ten Nobel Prize winning economists still signing the Economist's statement opposing the Bush tax cuts. One of Samuelson's many novel contributions was that he generalized and applied mathematical methods developed for the study of thermodynamics to the field of economics. His inspiration for doing so came, in part, from his mentor, polymath Edwin Bisdwell Wilson who was a former Yale student of the founder of chemical thermodynamics, Willard Gibbs. Samuelson, therefore, is a successful example of interdisciplinarity, and he combined these ideas in his magnum opus Foundations of Economic Analysis (1947). A effective 1957 film, "The Incredible Shrinking Man," directed by Jack Arnold is based on a screenplay written by Matheson. Anatomy of Wonder (2004) II-721. Barron (ed), Horror Literature 4-219.         The Sermon on the Mount from the Gospel of St. Matthew, Chapters 5, 6, 7

Worcester, MA: Achille J. St. Onge, 1973. 55pp. The text is printed with large ornamental initials in red by Joh. Enschedé en Zonen. In a striking designer binding by Stephen Conway, evoking ancient wood and stone. Conway writes that his bindings "have a tactile quality, in keeping with the three dimensional qualities of the book," and "a sort of earthy, minimalist look, hinting at the content." The central panel of the covers is comprised of plinth with three steps, covered in parchment stained with tones of copper and bronze. In the center is a cross cut from vellum. The four surrounding panels are covered with hand-painted paste paper patterned with wood grain, sealed with a matte wax finish. The panels are slightly separated, revealing underlays of black text between them. Conway also painted the endpapers with textural shades of brown and black, giving them the appearance of wood and bark. The spine is gilt-titled mahogany morocco. Following his belief that the box in which a book is housed is part of the overall work, and serves to enhance the viewer's experience, the book sits in a felt-lined compartment between the steps of a larger three-level plinth covered in hand-painted parchment. Conway was named a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 2000, and his work is held in collections worldwide, including the National Library of Scotland and The British Library. He is the current President of Designer Bookbinders. Extremely fine. (2 1/2 by 1 3/4; 64x43mm).

The two would go on to collaborate in various capacities on a number of other projects, including works on Nabokov as well as parts of the Dictionary of Literary Biography, but this was the first.
