        Suburbia

San Francisco: Straight Arrow, 1973. Prima edizione (First edition, first printing). broch. Ottimo (Fine). 8vo. Notes on actor Rip Torn (Original manuscript essay, with corrections)

N.p.: N.p., 1973. Seven-page manuscript, executed in holograph pencil with numerous corrections. An early rough draft of an essay by Southern regarding his first encounter with actor Rip Torn, which, oddly, is more an encounter with the concept of Rip Torn than Rip Torn himself (though Torn would ultimately become one of Southern's closest friends and confidants). The piece was ultimately published as "One of the Real...ah...Originals" in the April 1973 issue of Saturday Review of the Arts. With reference to his involvement in "The Cincinnati Kid" during Sam Peckinpah's brief tenure with same, Southern describes a meeting with the film's producer, the producer still reeling from Peckinpah's acrimonious departure (Norman Jewison would ultimately take the directorial reigns). The bulk of the essay details how Southern wrote a new scene in the midst of the change, introducing what would become Torn's character, Slade, a "gentleman" card shark. Full provenance available on request. Lined notebook paper, rectos only, 8.5 x 11 inches. Near Fine.

Collected fish papers of Pieter Bleeker. Collected and edited by W. H. Lamme. Volumes I-XIV (complete)

The Hague, W. Junk, 1973-1979. In 14 volumes. 8vo. Frontispiece portrait, numerous text pages and plates. Uniform printed cloth.l The all-important complete reprint edition of all the original fish papers by this eminent ichthyologist, including an English translation of his autobiography, and a fascimile reprint of the auction catalogue of Bleeker's fabulous fish collection. Pieter Bleeker (1819-1878) was one of the most productive 19th century ichthyologists, identifying and describing nearly 2000 new fish species, and introducing more than 500 new genera. In Dean's "Bibliography of the fishes" the list of Bleeker's publication occupies more than 20 full pages; more than any other author. His main area of study was the so called Malayan Archipelago, including the Dutch East Indies (Indonesia), now known to be a biological hot-spot. Bleeker's papers were published in many books and periodicals over a long period of time, and it is near-impossible to compile a complete set his writings. The publisher's price was Dfl. 3.000 (€ 1300). A very good, clean, unmarked set. Dean I, pp. 118-138.

        Narcotic '61 - '72

Tokyo: Jitinipposya Company, 1973. Fine in photographically illustrated wrappers with French flaps, matching slipcase, near fine, with light edge wear.. First Edition. Quarto. The second narcotic book by photographer Kazuo Kenmochi, designed by Mitsuo Katsui, and reproducing some of the images in his 1963 volume Narcotic Photographic Document, but with an English introduction, table of contents, and some English captions. Katsui's brilliant design catapults what is meant to be a pure documentary condemnation of narcotic use into one of the great photodrug books of all-time. With only unobtrusive captions added to page after page of imagery, the book covers all the bases of drug cultivation, transportation, incarceration, and agony, with sections as follows: Poppy / Marihuana / LSD / Cocaine / Non-Narcotic Dangerous Drugs / Smuggling / Narcotic High-Crime Areas / People Arrested in Investigation of Cases / Investigation of Narcotic Crimes / Okinawa / Euphoria and Agonies of Withdrawal. This volume is also far scarcer than the 1963 book; in seven years of active search this is only the third copy I have handled. (I supplied the copy pictured in Parr / Badger, v3, 82.) Unsurprisingly OCLC locates no copies.

Absolutely Scarce !. La Habana, Empressa de Grabaciones y Ediciones Musicales, 1973. 4°. Booklet with unnumbered 48 pages containing Poems and illustrations of the Revolution. Original, illustrated Hardcover Box. Original edition with only few signs of use. Original slipcase - slightly rubbed. Inscribed by Nicols Guillén on frontcover. Absolutely Scarce ! (Wikipedia) Nicolás Cristóbal Guillén Batista (10 July 1902 ?- 16 July 1989) was an Afro-Cuban journalist, political activist, and writer. He is best remembered as the national poet of Cuba. Guillén was born in Camagüey, Cuba. He studied law at the University of Havana, but he soon abandoned a legal career and worked as a typographer and journalist. His poetry was published in various magazines from the early 1920s and his first collection, Motivos de son, appeared in 1930. West Indies, Ltd., published in 1934, was Guillén's first collection of poetry with political implications.[2] Cuba's dictatorial Machado regime had been overthrown in 1933, but political repression in the following years intensified. In 1936, with other editors of Mediodía, Guillén was arrested on trumped-up charges, and spent some time in jail. In 1937 he joined the Communist Party[2] and made his first trip abroad ?- to attend a Congress of Writers and Artists in Spain. During his travels in the country he covered Spain's Civil War as a magazine reporter. Guillén returned to Cuba via Guadeloupe. He stood as a Communist in the local elections of 1940. The following year he was refused a visa to enter the United States, but he travelled widely over the next twenty years ?- in South America, China and Europe. Guillén's poetry was increasingly becoming imbued with issues of cross-cultural Marxist dialectic.[3] He was prevented by the Batista government from entering Cuba in 1953[1], but was welcomed back by Fidel Castro after the revolution, becoming appointed president of the Unión Nacional de Escritores de Cuba ?- the National Cuban Writers' Union ?- in 1961.[4] He also wrote some evocative and poignant poetry highlighting social conditions, such as "Problemas de Subdesarrollo" and "Dos Niños". He was awarded the Lenin Peace Prize in 1954. Guillén is probably the best-known representative of the "poesía negra" ("black poetry") that tried to create a synthesis between black and white cultural elements, a "poetic mestizaje". Characteristic for his poems is the use of onomatopoetic words ("Sóngoro Cosongo", "Mayombe-bombe") that try to imitate the sound of drums or the rhythm of the son. Silvestre Revueltas's symphonic composition Sensemayá was based on Guillén's poem of the same name, and became that composer's best known work. Nicolás Guillén died in 1989 at age 87 and was buried in the Colon Cemetery, Havana. His nephew was experimental Cuban filmmaker Nicolás Guillén Landrián (1938?-2003). (Wikipedia) Nicolás Guillén (* 10. Juli 1902 in Camagüey in Kuba; † 16.
