[Broadside Program]: de l'ame pour l'ame (of the soul for the soul) An Evening Honoring the first true poet and seer Arthur Rimbaud 20 Octobre 1854 10 Novembre 1891

[New York: Gotham Book Mart?. 1973]. First. First edition. Single blue folio leaf printed on the recto only. Fine. Line portrait drawing of Rimbaud by Smith at the top of the sheet above the text. The text lists the evening's program, along with a quote from Rimbaud: "The poet makes himself a seer by long, gigantic, and rational derangement of the senses. All forms of love, suffering, and madness. He searches himself. He exhausts all poisons in himself and keeps only their quintessences..." Also mentions: "special appreciation to the Wartoke Concern, Robert Mapplethorpe, Dennis Florio, Sharon Ensko, Sam Wagstaff and Gotham Book Mart." A very rare program from one of Patti Smith's earliest performances, predating her first album by two years. The first of three performances in honor of the anniversary of Rimbaud's death (also known as "Rock-n-Rimbaud"), it took place on the roof of Le Jardin, the gay disco in the Hotel Diplomat on November 4, 1973. Smith, dressed in an evening dress and feather boa, sang and recited her own works, as well as songs by Kurt Weil and Hank Ballard, backed up by Bill Elliot and future Patti Smith Group guitarist Lenny Kaye (only the second time that Smith and Kaye performed together). Rare. Not in OCLC. .

        The Black Interpreters

(Johannesburg): Ravan Press. (1973). Second issue, with passages by Mandlenkosi Langa censored on pages 54 and 60. Subtitled "Notes on African Writing," with one section on fiction and one on poetry. This copy is signed by the Nobel Prize-winning author. The poet was supposedly issued with a banning order in October, 1973 and the passages quoting him had to be deleted or the issues pulped: later reports say it was actually Langa's brother Benjamin who had been banned. Handling apparent to rear cover; about near fine in wrappers. A fairly uncommon book in either issue, and quite scarce signed. Softcover.

AMERGIN. The White Stag: An Enigma of the Forest. The ORIGINAL 1st DRAFT MSS

1973.. Hand-made paper wrappers. 39 cream, clay-coated A4 leaves (23 x 32 cm.) and one sheet (25.3 x 20.3 cm.) comprising the text; 14 (twelve 20.3 x 25.3 cm. and two 20.3 x 19.8 cm.) loose sheets containing splendid pen and ink (black) drawings used as illustrations; one sheet with Berlin's notes in blue ink as to placement of the illustrations (17.3 x 10 cm.); and one sheet (20.3 x 30.4 cm.) with chapter notes, directions to the typist, table of contents, etc., written in red, blue, green and black ink. An intriguing manuscript written in Berlin's strong hand with his large, bold illustrations, rich in imagery and metaphor; an important and interesting artifact of this fascinating and colorful novelist/artist.. A unique, VG+ item.. Sven Berlin was a poet, a painter, a sculptor, a dancer and a writer. His 1962 roman-a-clef novel The Dark Monarch, a work written with the prime motive of venting Berlin's personal anger over the hypocrisies of an over- close and competitive art St. Ives art colony, was not well received by his fellow art colony members, who all too easily recognized themselves within the pages of the text. The book was withdrawn after four successful libel actions. Contrary to what some writers report, Berlin did not abandon the genre of fiction following the unpleasantness that The Dark Monarch brought. In 1964 he published his novel Jonah's Dream: A Meditation on Fishing, a volume full of Berlin's accomplished and sensitive vignettes of fish and fishermen, and in 1971, his knowledge of the gypsy counter-culture emerged in his novel Dromengo: Man of the Road. It would be a full seven years before Amergin appeared. The story is a mystical fable of encounters between a man, a woman, and a stag in Ã’The Great Forest in the South.Ó Berlin writes of himself:I have always had to contend with the problems of painting, sculpture, and writing as three aspects of one personal express in an attempt to reach full realization and understanding of the world in which I find myself, which is the purpose of my life - and to investigate material experience with spirit by imagination. Beauty of form with poetic insight is the unattainable target.Chris Stevens of the Guardian wrote on January 4, 2000: Ã’Sven Berlin, who has died aged 88, was a dancer, painter, sculptor, poet, and writer of fiction, biography and autobiography. As one of the last great British bohemians, he established a reputation in the conservative environment of postwar St. Ives, with his long hair, beard, eccentric dress and earring. Sadly, his fame was never matched by his reputation as an artist.ÓMany of Berlin's publications drew upon personal experience. Berlin was part of the D-Day invasions of World War II, having rejected his former stance of conscientious objector, but the experience led to a breakdown and he returned to Cornwall to find restitution through his art. From that time on, the redemptive, restorative and spiritual power of art and nature would remain his guiding principle. The same theme runs through his works, including the two volumes of his 'autosvenography': The Coat of Many Colours and Virgo in Exile, that being a belief in the abstract and mystical forces that guide both nature and humankind. His writing is rich in imagery and metaphor, exhibiting an often dream-like quality. This manuscript is no exception.

Along with Director Peter MacGill (now of Pace/MacGill), Light Gallery was responsible for showing work of established artists along then-unkown photographers; shows dedicated to Paul Strand were followed by exhibitions of new work by artists like Robert Mapplethorpe. Collection includes an invitation INSCRIBED by Mitch Epstein to Tim and Marie Prentice and reads "I am a friend of John and Binn's / I was recently in India for 3 / months and my show consists of / many Indian photographs. John / said you both might be interested / in seeing it. I hope you can make / it. / Mitch.

Life as he saw it! A pair of glasses worn by Mafia Crime Boss Joe Bonanno with COA signed by his daughter-in-law, Rosalie Profaci Bonanno, niece of Mafia Crime Boss Joseph Profaci ? includes a twice-signed check by Joe Bonanno

Tucson, Arizona, May 25, 1973 "In the late 1960s, Joe Bonanno gave up his homes in Long Island and Middletown, New York, to live in Tucson, Arizona, where he had maintained a home since the early 1940s. During 30 years as boss of the Bonanno crime family, he was never indicted for a crime, but in Arizona, he served prison terms for obstruction of justice and for civil contempt of court. In 1980, at the age of 75, he was convicted for the first time, on a federal charge of conspiracy to obstruct justice. A jury found him guilty of attempting to block a grand jury investigation into allegations that he was laundering money through businesses operated by his sons in California. Bonanno, nicknamed ""Joe Bananas? ?" a name he despised - served a year in prison and was imprisoned again for 14 months in 1985-1986 after refusing to testify in a federal racketeering case in Manhattan against the reputed leaders of the five New York Mafia families.(1) Joe Bonnano?s plastic-rimmed glasses with notarized Certificate of Authenticity signed b"

        Imperial Camel Corps

No place: for the Author,, 1973. Original green buckram, title gilt to the spine. Duplicated typescript, 215 leaves, rectos only. Just a little rubbed on the spine edges, a very good copy. Second revised edition. "Since my book Imperial Camel Corps was published in 1970 a good deal of further information has come to light. So much so that I felt it to be my duty as well as privilege to complete the record in a way in which would enable me not only to include this additional material but also to correct certain inaccuracies of which I had been guilty … it was my original intention to try and arrange for the publication, in the proper sense of the word, of a second edition but... I was driven to the conclusion that... this was not really a practicable proposition. I then considered the possibility of preparing some sort of an appendix … which could be read in conjunction with the original text, but I soon found that the additions and alterations were so extensive that anything of this kind would inevitably lead to confusion if not complete incomprehension. The only alternative … was to start afresh and have the entire book revised and re-copied for private circulation in a form which would be chronologically exact and, I hope, easy to read" (author's Explanation). Genuinely uncommon, OCLC lists University of Leeds and National Library of Australia only, COPAC adds IWM "Effectively an unofficial history of 2nd Bn. ICC, from formation in early 1916 to disbandment in 1919... Many officers are mentioned in the narrative, the descriptions of camel behaviour are informative, and the various battles (Egypt, Palestine and Trans-Jordan, including the support given to Lawrence in 1918 are well covered" (Perkins). This copy inscribed on the title page, "For Tony, With all best wishes from Geoff, August 1974."

Daily Express. London. 1973. UNIQUE COPY. BROWN FACED RUPERT. SIGNED BY ALFRED BESTALL. A fine copy of this rare annual. The story of how the publishers changed Rupert's colouring from Brown to White, without Bestall's permission or knowledge is now well known. According to Bestall, this decision was made during a liquid lunch at the publishers local pub. This fine copy was given to a life long fan & long-time collector of Rupert while on a visit to his house. After telling the story of how the white cover came about and how he had refused to ever supply artwork for the publishers again, Bestall got this copy from his shelf and signed it for his guest, commenting as he did, that he had signed no other copy. The ultimate copy. Rare, Fine and signed.

Autograph Letter Signed and 4 Typewritten Letters Signed ('Paul' and 'Paul Gallico'), in all 4½ pages 4to with 3 envelopes, Antibes, 1972-1975, together with 3 Autograph Letters Signed of his third wife, Virginia.

      - The letters are written to Philip Bennett, his wife, the radio and television journalist Jeanne Heal, or to both, cataloguing a growing friendship forged during their mutual inhabitance of Antibes. The first letter is a brief and formal one from Gallico to Jeanne Heal, requesting information about her clipping service. The Gallicos lived in Antibes for many years and, it is apparent from these letters, the Bennetts visited there regularly. The blossoming friendship is illustrated in the exchange of invitations, thank-you letters, and congratulatory notes. 'It does me no good to learn that you will be at home on Tuesday, July 11th, since Virginia and I will be at home here and our two homes are too far apart. I wish you were here or that we were there. Cannot we arrange some kind of community home where we could all be "at" together. .'' ''A copy of your book seems to have taken up permanent residence on my desk and a quick brush through my files tells me to my horror that I never wrote specifically to say thank you for the copy, thank you for the inclusion of Ludmila and myself, and congratulations on what must be a really hot seller. .'Jeanne Heal's You and Your Handwriting was published in 1973, after she took up a second career as a graphologist.'So sorry we can't make the party. We're here. Couldn't I just send a black tie. .'
