Alton Water: The Landscape of the Proposed Reservoir, Final Report (February 1973)

D G Thornley, 1973. Paperback. Collectible; Acceptable. Paperback; English language; a fair reading copy; this is the 'Final Report on Landscape and Amenity issues involved in the proposed development of the Alton Water Reservoir Site' (nature conservation, fishing, sailing, birdwatching) prepared for the Ipswich Corporation (ie the Borough Council); the development was formerly known as the 'Tattingstone Reservoir'; the 81-page Report comes with an envelope in the back, containing 2 copies of the large map 'Sheet 9' showing the landscaping and amenety proposals in different colours, and a copy of the large map 'Sheet 9a' showing (in colour) the proposed footpath network around the new reservoir, there is a small tear in the top of this map but no information is lost; also included is a 3-page typed letter from D G Thornley summarising his proposals; apparently the Final Report came in a folder with other maps but these are absent; the Report is 29.5 cm wide, 20.5 cm high, the pages of the Report have no annotations, there are a few creases to the covers and the (blank) top-right corner of the inside of the rear cover has a water stain, the white fabric strip covering the spine has lifted in some places; this is a scarce document regarding one of the most significant undertakings in Suffolk in the recent past.         The Macrae Smith Archive of Original Artworks by American Illustrators, 1938-1973

Macrae Smith Company, Philadelphia 1973 - A large archive consisting of 31 collections of complete or near-complete sets of original artworks, including dust jacket cover art and in-text illustrations, for books published by the Macrae Smith Company of Philadelphia, a leading publisher of children's and young adult books. The archive contains over 250 line and brush drawings (and some scraperboard proofs), and over 30 watercolor and gouache paintings.Assembled by a longtime graphic designer at the company, the archive is comprehensive in scope, bringing together several of the firm's best artists: including H. Tom Hall, Albert Michini, Clifford Schule, and others, most of whom served under the firm's editor and vice-president Edward Shenton, an important illustrator and author. Hall, Michini, and Schule were World War II veterans influenced by N.C. Wyeth and the Brandywine school of illustrators in Pennsylvania. All three made a living after the war illustrating children's books, magazines, and paperback covers. They also were accomplished portrait and landscape painters. Shenton, a veteran of World War I, had won national recognition as the principal illustrator for *Scribner's Magazine* and of several important American books by Fitzgerald, Hemingway, Faulkner, and Marjorie Rawlings. He remained with the firm as editor from the 1940s until the early 1970s, while also teaching illustration at the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, and serving as head of the Illustration Department at Moore College of Art.Other notable artists for the firm during this period include Francis Chauncy, best known for her impressionistic drawings of football players in Joe Archibald's sports novels for young adults, and Elsie McCorkell, who illustrated several popular anthologies of traditional holiday stories from the 1960s. Earlier artwork collections in the archive include Paul Quinn's drawings from 1938 illustrating an adventure story set in Elizabethan England, Ruth MaCrae's suggestive drawings for an etiquette book for boys and girls from 1949, and Guy Fry's whimsical drawings illustrating a 1953 anthology of holiday plays for children. Most of the drawings (in black & white and color) are on textured or plain paper sheets, either loose or mounted onto artist's boards with light scattered layout measurements and production notes in the margins. Some illustrations were drawn directly onto the artist's board, and several also include paste-ups of front cover or title page text, and/or one or more plastic overlays representing additional color separations. The color paintings are on artist's board or thick textured paper, most are in mat frames, including two paintings in wood frames. Most of the individual collections are very good overall. A detailed list of all 31 collections is available.

        THE MIERNIK DOSSIER

Saturday Review Press, [1973]., 1973. First edition. Author's first espionage novel. Signed by the author on the title page. Fine in lightly rubbed dust jacket, complete with the original wraparound promotional band. Red top edges are bright and unfaded. Introduces Paul Christopher. 20th Century Crime and Mystery Writers says," The Miernik Dossier is something of a masterpiece, a novel of espionage that succeeds at every ambitious level the author attempts and reverberates with possibility. The narrative is carried solely by documents--the reports of various agents, their debriefings, letters, bugged telephone conversations, comments, diaries--and concerns a group of disparate people of several nationalities, all of whom are in one way or another involved with espionage." Further in their glowing report they say, "The Miernick Dossier is indeed a dossier, but demonstrates an artfulness and meaning that its documentary authenticity suggests without belaboring; it is truly a remarkable book, one of the finest novels of espionage in recent years.

Fear and Loathing: On the Campaign Trail ?72.

San Francisco: Arrow Books, 1973. First edition of the author's third book. Octavo, original black boards. Signed by Hunter Thompson, subject, George McGovern, Jimmy Carter and the illustrator, Ralph Steadman. Fine in a near fine first issue price-clipped dust jacket with the white boarder around the photograph of Thompson and McGovern on the back panel. A unique example with this collection of signatures. Forty years after its original publication, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ?'72 remains a cornerstone of American political journalism and one of the bestselling campaign books of all time. Hunter S. Thompson?'s searing account of the battle for the 1972 presidency—from the Democratic primaries to the eventual showdown between George McGovern and Richard Nixon—is infused with the characteristic wit, intensity, and emotional engagement that made Thompson "the flamboyant apostle and avatar of gonzo journalism" (The New York Times). Hilarious, terrifying, insightful, and compulsively readable, Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail ?'72 is an epic political adventure that captures the feel of the American democratic process better than any other book ever written. "Thompson should be recognized for contributing some of the clearest, most bracing and fearless analysis of the possibilities and failures of American democracy in the past century" (Chicago Tribune).

In addition, some of the letters illuminate the publication history of the books. A letter dated 9th September 1975 announces the publisher's success in acquiring copyright on all of Churchill's essays which would consequently be available as a four volume appendix to the standard thirty-four volume set. Later on 25th November 1975 the publisher informs the subscriber that a fire at one of their printers destroying thousands of sheets would delay the publication of the book and confuse the order in which the volumes were dispatched.         Groot Abecedarium. (With an introduction by Prof. G. W. Ovink).

Bemmel/ Nijmegen, Harry van Kuyk, 1973. Three cloth clamshell boxes in a wooden chest (all made by Van der Heijden Bindery, 71 x 54 x 10.5 cm), with an inlaid bronze plaque by Oscar Goedhart. The boxes contain 26 uninked relief prints and five serigraphs, all numbered and signed by the artist, plus a title page, six text pages ('Van voren af aan', a prelude to the Grand Abecedarium by Prof. G.W. Ovink) and a colophon page. Printed in 60 numbered copies.* Huge project of graphic artist Harry van Kuyk, that took three years of his life. This Abecedarium consists of the 26 letters of the alphabet, artistically translated into relief prints on very heavy paper, manufactured by the artist in his own studio on his embossing press called 'Aldus Manutius'. Printed without ink, in their play of light and shadow the compositions are being seen to best advantage. In the folder with the introduction by Ovink are five serigraphs, counterparts of five different letters. Paul van Capelleveen, curator of the National Library of the Netherlands, writes on his blog that artist and printer Harry van Kuyk (1929-2008) from the 1970s managed to draw - even international - attention for his unusual embossing compositions. To be able to manufacture them, he had a heavy press built that could get relief from several centimeters in a picture, both positive and negative: high and low, often combined in a single print. Van Kuyk's publications are at the cutting edge of the artist's book, private printing and graphic art. In libraries, his work is barely represented, but in museums all the more. More Harry van Kuyk in stock!.
