Santa : Black Sparrow Press, 1973. First Edition. Limited Issue, one of 300 numbered copies signed by the author, this being copy no.54. Octavo; 3/4 powder gray paper, printed in 3 colors over black and red patterned cloth, with title label applied to spine; original acetate overlay; 189pp, [3]. Presentation copy, inscribed on the dedication page just three days after publication: "For Bill Whitaker / These stories were all paid for, long ago or sooner. I hope besides the blood this stuff puts in your coffee, you get some cream and laughter. O.K. / Charles Bukowski / 12-26-73;" small drawing of a smoking man beneath the inscription. Subtle forward lean, with a gentle tap to upper board edges and small stain to upper edge of text; "Compliments of the Publisher" slip laid in; Near Fine in a VG+ acetate overlay, with some shallow chipping to base of spine and a few small tears. Attractive copy of Bukowski's first collection of short fiction. This copy lengthily inscribed to William (Bill) J. Whitaker, who from ca.1970 until the press closed down in 2002 represented Black Sparrow as a traveling salesman on the eastern seaboard, going from bookstore to bookstore each season selling the latest titles from the press. While copies of the signed limited will periodically show up for sale, copies with contemporary inscriptions - particularly to someone with a close, long-standing connection to the press - are genuinely rare.         The Black Interpreters

Ravan Press, (Johannesburg) 1973 - Second issue, with passages by Mandlenkosi Langa censored on pages 54 and 60. Subtitled "Notes on African Writing," with one section on fiction and one on poetry. This copy is signed by the Nobel Prize-winning author. The poet was supposedly issued with a banning order in October, 1973 and the passages quoting him had to be deleted or the issues pulped: later reports say it was actually Langa's brother Benjamin who had been banned. Owner signature on verso of front flyleaf; mild handling to covers; about near fine in wrappers. A fairly uncommon book in either issue, and quite scarce signed.         The Ristigouche and its Salmon Fishing with a Chapter on Angling Literature by Dean Sage. Edited by Colonel Henry A. Siegel and Harry C. Marschalk, Jr.

The Angler's and Shooter's Press, Goshen, CT 1973 - A book of almost legendary importance, recounting the author's adventures at Camp Harmony on the Restigouche River in New Brunswick, and drawing upon his long experience fishing the river. Dean Sage's contributions to angling literature are few in number but profoundly influential: "Ten Days' Sport on Salmon Rivers", published in the Atlantic in 1875, is a classic account. His library catalogue (2 vols.,1896, 1904) remains an important document in the history of angling bibliography and collecting. Sage's section on "The Atlantic Salmon," in Salmon and Trout (1902), is a synthesis of his own first hand knowledge as a fisherman and his assessment of the extensive literature. The Ristigouche and Its Salmon Fishing remains the work for which Sage is best known. A facsimile of the first edition, with additional material, including the signed color plates, an introduction by Arnold Gingrich, and "A Notice of Dean Sage" by Dewitt Sage. Full brown polished calf, triple gilt fillet borders surrounding a gilt design of an osprey catching a salmon on upper cover, gilt spine, t.e.g. Fine copy, housed in a sturdy cloth slipcase With hand-colored frontispiece entitled "Dean Sage's Favorite Flies" by Charles DeFeo (signed by him), an additional color plate after watercolor by Ogden M. Pleissner (signed by him), several black and white plates. 1 vols. 4to Number 225 of 250 copies, initialled by the publisher [Attributes: Signed Copy]

San Francisco: Straight Arrow Books, 1973. First Edition. New. First Printing. A Fine copy in a Near Fine jacket, with the original price of $7.95 intact. The book appears unread, and the second state jacket is a crisp example, showing absolutely none of the fading to the red and blue colored skull on the spine, a typical problem with this title. Other than a few areas of pinpoint rubbing to the corners and bottom edge, the jacket is as nice as we've ever seen. This copy has been signed by both the illustrator, Ralph Steadman and the subject, former Senator and U.S. Presidential candidate George S. McGovern. Steadman has signed via a specially decorated bookplate, which he affixed to this copy himself at an October 31, 2006 event, where he could not sign books due to a severe arthritis flare-up. McGovern signed the half-title page at a recent event. We presented a few copies of this book to him, and after a brief conversation about his friendship with Thompson, he mentioned to us that these were the only copies he could remember anyone bringing to one of his book signings. McGovern ran against, and lost to, Richard Nixon (an arch-nemesis of Thompson's), and Thompson was one of the few journalists who stuck with McGovern throughout his campaign, resulting in a lifelong friendship. While Thompson is almost universally revered for his book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, it is far from his best writing. Campaign Trail '72 remains one of the best pieces of political writing written during the 20th century, and along with Thompson's journalistic pieces in The Great Shark Hunt, stands as some of his very best work. A superior copy of book which is almost always found well-worn, signed by both the illustrator/jacket designer and the subject. Publicity material from both events are included with this book.

Los Angeles: Los Angeles Free Press, [1973]. Single sheet of 8.5 X 11 inch stock, with artwork rendered in pen and black ink. Hint of toning to extremities, else Fine. An original drawing by Charles Bukowski, which ran with his 'Notes of a Dirty Old Man' columns in the November 9-15, 1973 issue of the Los Angeles Free Press. The L.A. Free Press (or "Freep," as it was called) ran from 1964-1978, an important counter-culture publication which eventually had an enormous weekly circulation rate. Once L.A.'s 'Open City' newspaper folded in 1969, the Freep picked up Bukowski's 'Notes of a Dirty Old Man' column and ran with it until 1976. Bukowski's 'Notes' column was likely the single largest contributing factor to the spread of his literary fame, as well as his notoriety for being a hard-drinking, hard-living character. This drawing depicts a room scene where a large-breasted woman in garters and heels is sitting seductively on a chair and ottoman, while a man next to her nervously looks on; the drawing is appropriately captioned "Oh, my God!" The drawing came from the personal collection of L.A. poet-publisher Michael C. Ford, a former Freep staffer to whom Bukowski gave these to at the end of his tenure at the newspaper. While Bukowski did hundreds of drawings throughout his career, very few come to the market, and fewer still have seen publication as this one has. A wonderful drawing which succinctly channels the author's 'Dirty Old Man' personna.

The Tamarind Seed (Original screenplay for the 1974 film, with six original film still photographs)

Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s (this was one of his final films), though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life.
