        The Collected Works.

The Library of Imperial History. -6 1973 - LIMITED EDITION number 821 of 3,000 sets (2,000 for UK and Commonwealth, 1,000 for USA and Canada). 38 vols plus an additional proof copy of volume one. This set is accompanied by a collection of letters to the original subscriber from The Library of Imperial History on their headed paper and a pamphlet describing the contents of The Collected Essays of Sir Winston Churchill. Uniformly bound in original gilt stamped vellum, all edges gilt, original gilt-stamped green slipcases. Personalised book-plates issued by the publisher to front paste-downs of every volume except the proof copy of volume one with the edition number printed and name of subscriber in manuscript on each. Some wear to slipcases. Bindings of a few volumes slightly browned. Generally a very bright and handsome set. The correspondence between The Library of Imperial History and the subscriber preserved with this set describes the production and content of the books as well as offering advice on its use and conservation. In addition, some of the letters illuminate the publication history of the books. A letter dated 9th September 1975 announces the publisher's success in acquiring copyright on all of Churchill's essays which would consequently be available as a four volume appendix to the standard thirty-four volume set. Later on 25th November 1975 the publisher informs the subscriber that a fire at one of their printers destroying thousands of sheets would delay the publication of the book and confuse the order in which the volumes were dispatched.         Groot Abecedarium. (With an introduction by Prof. G. W. Ovink).

Bemmel/ Nijmegen, Harry van Kuyk, 1973. Three cloth clamshell boxes in a wooden chest (all made by Van der Heijden Bindery, 71 x 54 x 10.5 cm), with an inlaid bronze plaque by Oscar Goedhart. The boxes contain 26 uninked relief prints and five serigraphs, all numbered and signed by the artist, plus a title page, six text pages ('Van voren af aan', a prelude to the Grand Abecedarium by Prof. G.W. Ovink) and a colophon page. Printed in 60 numbered copies.* Huge project of graphic artist Harry van Kuyk, that took three years of his life. This Abecedarium consists of the 26 letters of the alphabet, artistically translated into relief prints on very heavy paper, manufactured by the artist in his own studio on his embossing press called 'Aldus Manutius'. Printed without ink, in their play of light and shadow the compositions are being seen to best advantage. In the folder with the introduction by Ovink are five serigraphs, counterparts of five different letters. Paul van Capelleveen, curator of the National Library of the Netherlands, writes on his blog that artist and printer Harry van Kuyk (1929-2008) from the 1970s managed to draw - even international - attention for his unusual embossing compositions. To be able to manufacture them, he had a heavy press built that could get relief from several centimeters in a picture, both positive and negative: high and low, often combined in a single print. Van Kuyk's publications are at the cutting edge of the artist's book, private printing and graphic art. In libraries, his work is barely represented, but in museums all the more. More Harry van Kuyk in stock!.

Descrittione di tutti i Paesi Bassi, altrimenti detti Germania Inferiore. Antwerpen: Plantijn, 1581.

"Folio, geb. in half perkament, (20)+558+(18) p., ill. Guicciardini Illustratos 5). Dit exemplaar heeft variant B.

(originally published under the title "ALWAYS HARD!" under the Gracie Amber penname by Cameo in 1970 - which I have verified as I own both books), published by Barbizon in 1973. This book is one of a number of 30 or so books that Dean Koontz wrote for Cameo books early in his career under various pennames (like Ann Griffin or Leonard Chris), and one book he actually published under his own name (Bounce Girl). Dean Koontz has since disavowed and otherwise denied having ever written such books (besides Bounce Girl which was published under his own name and the Leonard Chris book "Hung"), but the evidence is undisputable: The Library of Congress confirms that Gerda Ann Koontz (Dean's wife) holds the copyrights to this book. "Gracie" is one of the five names listed in the dedication of the gothic romance "Demon Child" (which Koontz wrote under the penname of Deanna Dwyer). All five of the first names listed in the dedication of "Demon Child" have turned out to be pseudonyms that Dean had used for this particular "Adult" literature. In an article written by Dean Koontz entitled "Dean's Drive" in the sci-fi fanzine Energumen #8 (6/71), Dean Koontz admitted to writing 30 of these books in 1970 (including "Share The Warm Flesh" - this book), along with Pig Society and The Underground Lifestyles Handbook (both of which were also published by the same publisher, Cameo books in 1970). One of the titles that Dean Koontz admits to having written ("Thirteen and Ready") was written under the penname of Ann Griffin. In an early sci-fi fanzine, Beabohema #8 (1970), Dean Koontz again talked about writing these books. The authors initials (A.G.) are simply Dean's wife's initials in reverse. One of the Ann Griffin cameo books "Protest Ball," lists the author's address as Harrisburg, Pennsylviania (where Dean and his wife were living in 1970). Finally, in Dean Koontz's writing how-to book "How to Write Popular Fiction" (1972), he refers to these books and specifically to the Ann Griffin penname. Book has vertical spine creasing, no spine lean, cover creases, removed price sticker color cover tear, no soiling or staining to covers, no former owner markings or used bookstore markings inside, no missing pages, some creased page corners (looks like poor handling/storage), some edge wear. Overall a VG book of this rare 1970s Dean Koontz pen name book. I have a number of other U.S. and U.K. Dean Koontz 1st printing hardcover/paperback/magazine appearances up for sale. This edition was limited to 20 copies only. Middleton describes the creative process: "Start by spotting several blobs of water color paint, in different hues, on a piece of heavy tracing paper, located well within the whole area; then, subject the paper to quick horizontal movement in several directions. Repeat the process one or more times. The result will be a mass of crisscrossing irregular width lines and solid shapes". This process allowed Middleton to "discover recognizable material, usually in the form of birds, animals, fish, flowers and human profiles, appearing in plausible environments." Middleton was an American book designer, painter, and type designer. Born in Glasgow, Scotland he came to Chicago in 1908 where he studied at the School of the Art Institute. He joined the design department of the Ludlow Typograph Company in 1923 where he served as director from 1933-71. In 1944 he began operating a private press, The Cherryburn Press, producing many fine press editions. This copy of 'Cherryburn Prints' came from grandson of R. Hunter Middleton. This copy has two extra prints, the first is dated 1973 and bears the initials RHM, and the second extra print is a large format watercolor (10 1/2 x 8 inches) printed on the stationary of R. Hunter Middleton. Each extra print is added at the beginning of the prints in each portfolio. No ownership marks. The linen on the spine so the first portfolio case is slightly tanned, there is edge rear to the rear board of the first portfolio and to the inner cardboard ridge, the wrappers, printed text and color prints inside each portfolios are bright and clean, the red ribbon ties have been renewed for both portfolios; a tight copy in near fine condition.
