        Poet and the Rent

David Mamet, Flossmoor, Ill[inois]. 1973 - Quarto. 41pp. Mimeographed playscript printed in purple, printed rectos only, prong-bound into manila folder, hand-titled by Mamet on front wrap: "Poet and the Rent by David Mamet. This Copy Belongs To David Mamet" and with the number "19" in upper right-hand corner. Very good or better. David Mamet's personal copy of his second play. The title-page bears his printed copyright notice for 1973, from his hometown of Flossmoor, Illinois. Heavily annotated throughout in his hand, with dialogue rewritten on the verso of the title page and on another page, and on the inside of both wrappers. Also bears a pencil sketch on the rear wrapper of what appears to be a set, presumably in his hand; as well as a separate laid-in mimeographed leaf on blue paper providing a rehearsal and performance schedule and the locations on the Goddard College campus where they would be held. The play was first performed in March of 1973 at Goddard College in Vermont, where Mamet was a student and taught. The original cast included Oscar-nominated actor William H. Macy, who was Mamet's student and frequent collaborator and who made his directorial debut with a 1975 version of the play. This is very much a working production copy, with Mamet making changes, striking out lines he didn't like, inserting new dialogue and noting new ideas as they occurred to him. From the estate of Fritzie Sahlins. Sahlins was a co-founder with her husband Bernie, of Second City Theater Troupe, and worked with Mamet on his first full-length play, *The Duck Variations,* one year earlier. This play was published much later as *Poet and the Rent* by Samuel French in 1981 as an acting edition and (adding a "The") as *The Poet and the Rent* by Grove Press in 1986 in the omnibus edition *Three Children's Plays*. Overall the most substantive, heavily annotated, and earliest playscript of Mamet's that we've seen. *OCLC* locates no copies, although the finding aid to Mamet's papers at the Ransom Center seems to indicate that they have a copy with corrections in an unknown hand.         FEAR AND LOATHING ON THE CAMPAIGN TRAIL '72 - SIGNED BY RALPH STEADMAN AND GEORGE S. MCGOVERN

Straight Arrow Books, San Francisco 1973 - First Printing. A Fine copy in a Near Fine jacket, with the original price of $7.95 intact. The book appears unread, and the second state jacket is a crisp example, showing absolutely none of the fading to the red and blue colored skull on the spine, a typical problem with this title. Other than a few areas of pinpoint rubbing to the corners and bottom edge, the jacket is as nice as we've ever seen. This copy has been signed by both the illustrator, Ralph Steadman and the subject, former Senator and U.S. Presidential candidate George S. McGovern. Steadman has signed via a specially decorated bookplate, which he affixed to this copy himself at an October 31, 2006 event, where he could not sign books due to a severe arthritis flare-up. McGovern signed the half-title page at a recent event. We presented a few copies of this book to him, and after a brief conversation about his friendship with Thompson, he mentioned to us that these were the only copies he could remember anyone bringing to one of his book signings. McGovern ran against, and lost to, Richard Nixon (an arch-nemesis of Thompson's), and Thompson was one of the few journalists who stuck with McGovern throughout his campaign, resulting in a lifelong friendship. While Thompson is almost universally revered for his book Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, it is far from his best writing. Campaign Trail '72 remains one of the best pieces of political writing written during the 20th century, and along with Thompson's journalistic pieces in The Great Shark Hunt, stands as some of his very best work. A superior copy of book which is almost always found well-worn, signed by both the illustrator/jacket designer and the subject. Publicity material from both events are included with this book.         Law, Legislation and Liberty. A new Statement of the Liberal Principles of Justice and Political Economy.

London: Routledge & Kegan Paul,, 1973-1979. Volume 1: Rules and Order. Volume 2: The Mirage of Social Justice. Volume 3: The Political Order of a Free People. 3 volumes, octavo. Publisher's black boards, spines lettered in gilt on blue grounds, with the dust jackets. Bookplate of Julio Nuñez to front pastedown of volume one. Stamp of an Irish accountancy firm to the front pastedown of volume two. Dustjackets with slightly sunned spines: a very good set. First editions of each volume of Hayek's last major work of social philosophy, published over a seven-year period. "He originally described it as a tailpiece to The Constitution of Liberty (1960). But what attracted most attention was a postscript in which he ascribed the success of human institutions to their evolutionary success in the struggle for survival. This came dangerously near to justifying whatever system happened to exist—including by inference the communist order which still prevailed in Russia. Some of his strongest earlier supporters, such as Norman Barry, complained that his previous critical rationalism had been 'almost completely jettisoned in favour of a curious, neo-Darwinistic form of social evolutionism' (Barry, Classical Liberalism, 3)."         LOS FOUR: ALMARAZ / DE LA ROCHA / LUJAN / ROMERO

Art Gallery, University of California, Irvine & Los Angeles County Museum of Art, Irvine & Los Angeles, CA 1973 - One continuous 10 x 118" sheet printed recto only folded neatly vertically in eighths to make a 16pp leporello fold out, profusely illustrated in duotone. Designed by Frank Romero. In a protective clear acetate dustwrapper. This is the graphically innovative sixteen page artist book cum catalogue produced by the members of Los Four in conjunction with their historic 1973 survey exhibition held at the Art Gallery at the University of California, Irvine and subsequently the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Comprised of local artists Carlos Almaraz, Roberto "Beto" de la Rocha, Gilbert "Magu" Lujan, and Frank Romero, the work of Los Four was a highly important and influential part of the burgeoning Chicano Art movement of the seventies. Printed with a visually striking split rainbow fount, it features four parallel photographic narratives that run horizontally along the length of its accordion-fold pull-out accompanied by biographical statement by each of the four artists. A bright, most handsome example of this exceedingly uncommon ephemeral item limited to one thousand, five hundred unnumbered copies that was the only printed documentation of the exhibition. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         Histoire de ce qui s'est passé au royaume du Japon l'annee 1624.Paris, Sebastien Chappelet, 1628. 8vo. With a woodcut Jesuit seal on the title page. Contemporary tanned sheepskin, blind-stamped with a fleur-de-lys.

Alt-Japan-Katalog 1319; De Backer & Sommervogel VI, col. 1973; Cordier, Japonica, col. 311; Lach & Van Kley III, p. 376 & 403; WorldCat (2 copies). Very rare, first and only edition of a translation into French of the "Annual Letter" for 1624, the annual account of the Jesuit missions in Japan written for their superiors in Rome. Although possibly written by Jesuits in Japan, the text was edited by Rodrigues Girão in Macao. First published in its original Italian as a standalone book in 1628, it was immediately translated into Latin, French, Dutch and German. The letter describes the Great Edo Martyrdom of 1623, when 50 Christians were crucified on the orders of the Shogun. Added to that are lives of the principal martyrs and descriptions of previous persecutions of the Christians in Japan, whose religion had officially been banned in 1614. The book ends with various papal letters of support written to the Christians in Japan, which are present both in their original Latin and in French translation. With a library stamp and a manuscript date on the title-page. Some spots and waterstains in the margins, especially in the first 30 pages and some browning; small tear in the final page and stains on the final endpaper. Paste-downs are damaged and loose at several corners and front endpaper is missing. Binding rubbed, particularly on the spine. A good, structurally sound copy.

New York, 1973. unbound. 1 page, 11 x 8.5 inches, New York City, November 22, 1973. Exceptional typed letter with one handwritten line in which Barrett shares his NYU private phone number. Written to fellow philosopher Henry David Aiken, reflecting on their long friendship and the fact that both are getting older, in part: "...This is a love-letter to you, in lieu of seeing you. It doesn't do for seeing you, talking with you, but for the time being it must do. We shall see each other soon. Here we are, you and I, mired in the last crisis of all, so Erikson tells us, none more to go through, that's luck, but what a fucking indignity after all those other crises, adolescence, youth, middle age, what not, to have another tunnel to crawl through. You are the most intelligent man I've ever known, friend brother father once, and I wanted to talk with you about all this. I'm no longer a reader of Beckett; I've become one of his characters. I think you're the only philosopher in the United States who would understand me when I say it. For me it came about this way. I had been drinking too much. Alcohol dehydrates. In the middle of the summer, the heavy viscous New York summer, I had a heat seizure in the New York subway. My legs gave out under me. I was helped out alive. But I knew fear as I'd never known it before. When the body gives way, you begin to think, really think. Think what? In the time closing around you, you think of the few things that we may have left to do, the few people you really want to see. I thought of you. If I'm ever to do anything again, ever write anything again, it will only be after talking with you. If I%u2019d had you to talk with, this last book of mine would have been a lot different and a lot better. Dear friend: take care, take heart, I crawl forward a little, and you too crawl. Maybe we will crawl out of this god-damned tunnel yet." Henry David Aiken (1912 - 1982) was the author of "Age of Ideology." Natural folds; light wrinkling and spotting. Very good(-) condition. Professor of Philosophy at New York University from 1950 - 1979. He is best remembered for his work "Irrational Man.

        The Awakenings.

London: Duckworth, 1973. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by Oliver Sacks on the title page. Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Hailed by The Washington Post as, "One of the most beautifully composed and moving works of our time." The Awakenings tells the story of sleeping-sickness epidemic of 1918 which caused hundreds of survivors to slip into a paralysis with similarities to advanced Parkinson's disease. These patients, only occasionally able to communicate or move, were nearly all institutionalized for life, their ranks increasing every now and then with similarly afflicted men and women. Sacks came to work at a long-term care facility shortly before the first exciting results with L-dopa and Parkinson's in the late 1960s; his patients soon embarked on dramatic, difficult recoveries from up to 50 years of torpor. He documents their spiritual and medical obstacles with great care to portray their individual personalities, long suppressed but finally released.
