Here is some supplemental information about the Lithograph: Signed, Dated, and Numbered out of 75 in pencil.Davis's first solo exhibition of drawings was at the Dupont Theater Gallery in 1952, and his first exhibition of paintings was at Catholic University in 1953. A decade later he participated in the "Washington Color Painters" exhibit at the Washington Gallery of Modern Art in Washington, DC, which traveled to other venues around the US, and launched the recognition of the Washington Color School as a regional movement in which Davis was a central figure. The Washington painters were among the most prominent of the mid-century color field painters. Though he worked in a variety of media and styles, including ink, oil, acrylic, video, and collage, Davis is best known by far for his acrylic paintings (mostly on canvas) of colorful vertical stripes, which he began to paint in 1958. Ma dal ’37 fu un antifascista in rivolta contro ogni potere Winkler, lo scultore di regime che divenne re della provocazione In un bronzetto aveva raffigurato il "critico d’ arte" col sedere piatto e la testa a forma di sciacquone mentre scrive vuote parole nell’ aria. L’ opera illustra con eloquenza il reciproco disamore fra la critica e Othmar Winkler, lo scultore altoatesino morto l’ altro ieri notte all’ ospedale Santa Chiara di Trento all’ eta’ di novantadue anni. Dalla vita burrascosa e solitaria appare chiaro che Winkler non ha fatto molto per guadagnare consensi. La sua ultima provocazione e’ del ’ 95. Invitato a una collettiva della Provincia di Trento, mando’ un "Enigma di Pinocchio" con appeso al naso del burattino un barattolo di feci personali per contestare la "degenerazione dell’ arte"; l’ opera gli venne respinta perche’ la "merda d’ artista" aveva gia’ avuto, nel 1961, il noto precedente di Piero Manzoni. Eppure ci fu un periodo, sette anni su novantadue, in cui Winkler fu lo scultore piu’ "ufficiale" che si possa immaginare: nel 1931, dopo aver visitato una sua mostra al Circolo della Stampa di Roma, Mussolini volle posare per lui (due ore al giorno per due settimane). Come d’ abitudine, l’ esempio del duce fu immediatamente seguito dai gerarchi: e Winkler scolpi’ i busti di Ciano, Teruzzi, De Bono, De Vecchi, Bottai, Marinetti e persino di Goebbels che ando’ a ritrarre fino a Berlino. Scultore di regime, dunque, e al piu’ alto livello. Ma un bel giorno, nel 1937, addio camicie nere. Il trentenne Othmar butto’ in strada i busti in gesso dei gerarchi, fuori dal suo studio romano di via XX Settembre, e prese il treno braccato dalla polizia. Fini’ a Oslo, dove frequento’ il pittore Edvard Munch e divenne antifascista, convinzione che si rinforzo’ l’ anno dopo quando, a Berlino, fu testimone degli orrori perpetrati dai nazisti contro gli ebrei nella "notte dei cristalli". Nel dopoguerra, il suo estro ribelle si diresse contro la classe dirigente ("i politici di oggi mi sembrano peggio di quegli altri, che se non altro avevano una corrusca grandezza" disse), in chiave soprattutto anticlericale, come quando raffiguro’ un cardinale in sella a un maiale, con la falce e martello sulla stola; oppure come quando le suore di Maria Bambina gli ordinarono una "Via crucis" e lui le ripago’ con i grattacieli e la locomotiva del Progresso che schiacciavano il Cristo, mentre la spada dell’ Anticristo era coperta da un ramoscello d’ ulivo. Allegorie bizzarre, se vogliamo contorte, indubbiamente eccentriche come il suo modo di essere ribelle e solitario, di volta in volta fascista e antifascista, anarchico e comunista, blasfemo e credente; che nel bene e nel male racchiude i tormenti di un secolo lungo quanto la sua vita.         Nicholas Ray at the Chateau Marmont: We Can't Go Home Again (Photographer's archive)

Archive of photographs and negatives, shot by and belonging to photographer Andy Romanoff, of director Nicholas Ray at work on his collaborative, experimental film "We Can't Go Home Again" at the Chateau Marmont in 1973. In addition to the material, sale of the archive includes complete ownership of republication and reproduction rights. In 1971, after nearly a decade outside the Hollywood establishment, Ray secured a two year teaching position at SUNY Binghamton's newly created film department. There, he began working with students on "We Can't Go Home Again," an experimental film in which Ray and the students play themselves, and which used a variety of film formats, found footage, cinema verité, and experimental editing techniques to explore the nature of teaching, the generation gap, and the art of filmmaking itself. Beginning in 1972, Ray began screening versions of the film at festivals, while continuing to edit it with the students. In preparation for the 1973 Cannes Film Festival, where the film would screen out of competition, Ray and several students rented a bungalow at the Chateau Marmont, where the director had once rehearsed "Rebel Without a Cause." Introduced through a friend, Andy Romanoff worked as a personal assistant to the director for the two weeks he was in California. It was during this time that Romanoff shot the photos in this archive, showing Ray and his students at work. Unfortunately, after screening at Cannes, the film's experimental nature caused some controversy within the SUNY Binghamton film department, and Ray's teaching contract was not renewed. He would continue to work on the film until his death in 1979, with the most definitive version being completed in 1976. The film was released on DVD and Blu-ray by Oscilloscope Laboratories (OSC-039) in 2012. Romanoff misplaced the negatives shortly after his two weeks at Chateau Marmont with Ray, and they remained lost until he discovered them in a pile of papers in 2011. He struck 10 of the 12 photos at that time, but other than a single, small exhibition in 2012, and a couple of images appearing briefly a montage sequence in "Don't Expect Too Much," Susan Ray's documentary on the making of the film, they remain largely unknown to the public, and have never been published. Nicholas Ray's importance to film is nearly inestimable. His films, a number of which are rightly considered classics, profoundly influenced both the French New Wave and New Hollywood Cinema, including directors Martin Scorsese, Wim Wenders, and Jean-Luc Godard, who once exclaimed in an interview: "the cinema is Nicholas Ray." However, Ray, a drug addict and alcoholic, was gradually shut off from the Hollywood film industry through the late 50s and early 60s. After collapsing on the set of "55 Days at Peking" (1963) and being removed from the production, Ray would never direct a major studio film again. Any material from his post-Hollywood life and career is rare. The archive includes: Ten photographs of Nicholas Ray and his students at work, each approximately 15 x 15 inches, archivally matted and framed to 21.5 x 22 inches. 12 negatives, cut into six strips of two each, containing the ten photos plus two others from the same shoot. One Polaroid, 4.5 x 3.5 inches, of Ray and a few students at in their room at the hotel. All the material is in Fine condition, and hi-res scans of each of the photos are included, along with the Blu-ray release of the film together with Susan Ray's documentary "Don't Expect Too Much." Selbstverständlich hat die getroffene Wahl nichts mit einer Missachtung von Künstlern, wie Baumeister, Brancusi, Fontana, Villon zu tun ... Aber es wäre unmöglich gewesen wesentlich mehr als ein Album mit 30 Blättern herauszugeben. Alle Künstler haben zustimmend auf unsere Bitte um Mitarbeit geantwortet, mit fünf Ausnahmen: Barbara Hepworth, Josef Albers, Henri Closon, Naum Gabo, Ben Nicholson. Die Motive ihrer Ablehnung waren verschieden. Barbara Hepworth nannte gesundheitliche Gründe. Josef Albers informierte uns, daß er \"versuche von allen Gruppenaktivitäten fernzubleiben und daß er deshalb nicht wünsche an Gruppenausstellungen und Gruppenpublikationen teilzunehmen\". Vermutlich hat er seinen Brief von 1935 an Vantongerloo vergessen, indem er schrieb: \"Ich betrachte mich als Mitglied Ihrer Vereinigung. Letztes Jahr habe ich zweimal fünf Dollars an Herrn Arp geschickt, um die Beitrittszahlungen zu begleichen ... \". Henri Closon erklärte uns, daß unser Projekt nicht anderes sei als ein großer Schwindel und drohte uns mit dem Gesetz. Naum Gabo, dessen Plastiken die Sitze mehrerer großer Unternehmen schmücken, teilte uns mit, daß er an \"keinerlei Unternehmungen geschäftlicher Art\" partizipiere. Ben Nicholson hingegen wollte nicht gestört werden ... Man wird fragen, weshalb der Präsident der Gruppe \"Abstraction création\", Auguste Herbin, nicht in diesem Album vertreten ist. Sein Fehler sei uns nicht angelastet: die Erbin des Malers, Geneviève Claisse, gab uns die nötige Autorisation nicht ... Die 30 Blätter, die wir herausgeben, bilden ein Ganzes, das nicht vorgibt vollständig zu sein. Auguste Herbin was president, George Vantongerloo vice-president, Jean Hélion secretary and treasurer; Hans Arp, Albert Gleizes, Frank Kupka, Tutundjian and George Valmier were the members of the board of directors. The association planned to organise in France and other countries, exhibitions and demonstrations of non figurative art: \"neither the copy nor the interpretation of nature\". Wishing its members to come from all over the world, the board of directors invited artists to join whom they esteemed to be working along the lines of these ideas. To be sure, similar groups existed at the time in other countries. But \"abstraction création\" was the first - and the only - on the international level. The first issue of the yearbook was published in Paris 1932, under the name \"abstraction création art non figuratif\". Four annual issues followed, through 1936, with the same presentation, a format of 22 x 27 cm, the titles on the covers always in a different colour. For each issue the board of directors asigned the respective editors. In praxis, this meant, that the artists send photographs of their paintings and sculptures, as well as theoretical writings, manifests and general texts - which were published in the review in alphabetical order, without annotations or commentaries by the editors. The five isssue of \"abstraction création art non figuratif\" constituted an authenical record of the state of the artistic avant-garde of the Thirties. It is a workshop record and, at the same time, an international compendium, since artists of western and eastern europe, the United States of America, Japan and Australia submitted their work therein for discussion. During that time, he was one of the closest advisers of then- Secretary of State Dean Acheson and his Assistant Secretary of State John Allison. After Jessup was maligned by Senator Joe McCarthy for purported communist "affinities," General Dwight D. Eisenhower heralded Jessup's "devotion to the principles of Americanism." McCarthy's charges kept Jessup from being reappointed to the U.S. delegation to the United Nations in 1951 but President Harry S. Truman made him an alternate delegate the following year. DEAN SAGE: Dean Sage first came to the Restigouche in 1875, & when he returned home wrote an article for Atlantic Monthly entitled "Ten Days Sport on Salmon Rivers." Sage's Ristigouche adventures were a major undertaking and generally lasted all summer. He and his companions packed several months worth of supplies and equipment, boarded a steamer from New York to Boston, and then took another steamer to Saint John. They travelled by train to Shediac, where they boarded another steamer to Dalhousie. There, they rented wagons & drove to the Matapedia River where they hired Micmac guides & travelled slowly upstream by canoe & horse-drawn barge. On his first trip, Sage camped on a bluff overlooking a swirl of mists and currents at the confluence of the Ristigouche & Upsalquitch rivers. He realized that he had found a place to which he would return. He later wrote: "We made a raft to transport our luggage down, & that night pitched our tent on a beautiful bluff at the junction of the Upsalquitch & Ristigouche, & just over the pool. Here we were comparatively free from flies, with good fishing all about us & a delightful view up and down both rivers." Dean Sage, of Menands, near Albany, New York, was a famous salmon angler and the Sage fly was his creation. He wrote about the Atlantic salmon in the volume, Salmon and Trout, 1902. The Sage fly has a yellow dubbin body; silver rib; a tail of widgeon; scarlet, green and orange or yellow hackle; & a dark widgeon or mallard wings. Mr. Sage formed an exquisite angling library which was inherited & augmented by his son, Dean Sage, of New York, who in 1942 disposed of it at public auction. The collection had many of the earlier books, including fifty-eight different copies of Izaak Walton's Complete Angler, two of which were of the first edition of 1653. At the sale one of these brought $975 and the other $950, a new high for this "one-and-sixpenny book." The value in 1850 was estimated at $63. On June 23, 1902, Dean Sage & his guide Alex Marchand fished the morning and landed three salmon. Sage returned to camp & ate lunch. He retired to his bed at 4 p.m. with chest pain & died soon after. Copley (1916-1973) was publisher of the “San Diego Union,” “The San Diego Union-Tribune,” and the “San Diego Evening Tribune” from 1947 until his death in 1973. He was Chairman of the Board of The Copley Press, a newspaper chain comprising 15 daily and 32 weekly publications. Copley died of cancer on October 6, 1973.On the evening of the day he wrote this letter, January 23, 1973, President Nixon addressed the Nation from the Oval Office in The White House.       London: AVCO Embassy Pictures, 1973. Draft script for the 1974 film. From the collection of still photographer Bob Willoughby. Rainbow copy with blue, pink, and white leaves. Included are six vintage black-and-white single weight reference still photographs from the film. Bob Willoughby (1927-2009) studied with Saul Bass at the Kann Institute of Art in Los Angeles, worked as a photographer for magazines such as "Life," "Look," and "Harper's Bazaar," and as a set photographer for every major studio, documenting some of most important films of the era and creating intimate portraits of some of Hollywood's greatest celebrities. Willoughby moved his family to County Cork, Ireland in 1972, working on only a handful of films through the late 1970s and early 1980s (this was one of his final films), though he would continue to photograph, exhibit, and publish books for the remainder of his life. Based on Evelyn Anthony's 1971 novel, about a woman on holiday in the Caribbean who meets a handsome Russian. Judith Farrow (Andrews) meets Feodor Sverdlov (Sharif), and together they visit all the beautiful spots on the island, but Judith's ties to the British government, and Feodor's to the Russian government cause problems for their romance. An underrated but serious look at espionage in the Cold War. Set in Barbardos and shot on location there, and in London and Paris. Yellow studio wrappers, marked copy No. 122. Title page present, dated April 1973, with credits for screenwriter Edwards. 127 leaves, mimeograph, with pink and blue undated revision pages throughout.         Bricklin conceptual car design

      1973. Mixed media on paper. Signed "Grasse" Design for Bricklin car company This strikingly handsome sports car design was designed for Malcolm Bricklin's unsuccessful car manufacturing effort of the mid-1970's. Handsomely engineered on the outside, the cars were poorly made and designed within and very few survive. Herb Grasse began designing cars professionally in 1968 for Dodge. He worked for Chrysler, Ford and Nissan, and eventually had his own design firm. From 1973-75, he was Chief Designer for Bricklin. He died in 2010.
