(JANSS, EDWIN). Janss, Edwin. Foreword by Giles W. Mead. EDWIN JANSS: MARINE PORTFOLIO II - SEVENTEEN COLOR STUDIES FROM THE EASTERN & WESTERN PACIFIC: THE GALAPAGOS ISLANDS: THE REVILLAGIGEDO ISLANDS: THE GULF OF CALIFORNIA: THE PALAU ISLANDS: THE CHANNEL ISLANDS. With Seventeen Signed Color Photographs. Los Angeles: Natural History Museum, 1973. First Edition. Folio. Cloth Portfolio in Slipcase. Photography Monograph. Fine/No Jacket - As Issued. np (4pp) + seventeen 13 x 15" archival cardstock sheets each with a 7 1/2 x 9 1/2" type-C color photographic print mounted on the recto, 17 color illustrations. "Marine Portfolio II" is the late Los Angeles based underwater photographer and art collector Edwin Janss' spectacular second - of three total - collection of original color photographic prints of fish, corals, and mostly nudibranchs taken during Mr. Janss' many dives in the Pacific Ocean. It features a brief foreword by the then-director of Los Angeles' Natural History Museum Giles W. Mead accompanied by seventeen vivid 7 1/2 x 9 1/2" color images each mounted on a 13 x 15" archival cardstock sheet additionally NUMBERED AND SIGNED "Edwin Janss" in pencil on the recto. A brand new, internally most handsome example of this exceedingly uncommon, luxe item showing just a bit of wear and trivial spotting to the publisher's dark brown slipcase. While not marked in any way, this came to us directly from the library of Janss' close friend, the late, great artist Sam Francis. PLEASE NOTE: Additional shipping costs are required for this item beyond our standard rates due to its weight and value - we will inform you of the applicable amount at time of purchase.         The Wicker Man (Post Production Script, September 1973)

London: Pinewood Studios, 1973. Cutting and Continuity script for the 1973 film, "The Wicker Man," directed and written for the screen by Robin Hardy and starring Edward Woodward and Christopher Lee. An important and rare document that details a now-classic film that from the beginning experienced serious complications. The original film negatives were mistakenly destroyed, followed by years of spurious and unauthorized editing by various distributors (the film did not even screen in the US until 1975). Even today's "director's cut" is only roughly reconstructed from various existing prints, with a relatively long discourse regarding the origins of his island's culture and fruit by Lee's character, Lord Summerisle, still completely missing. This continuity represents the film's original, unexpurgated edit. The front wrapper reads "Printed in London / September 1973," and the film debuted in England in December of that same year, making this likely one of the earliest printed continuities, if not the first. Laid in is a cast and credits list that notes a running time of 86 minutes (contrasted with the most recent reconstruction, which runs 100 minutes). Green card wrappers, with credits on the title page for director-screenwriter Hardy and producer Peter Snell. 192 pages, long sheets, prong binding at the top edge. Very Good or better condition overall.

An Archive of 8 letters to the writer and editor Robie Macauley, including one from 1948 and 7 from 1972-3, when Macauley was acting as fiction editor of "Playboy" magazine

1973 - 1 vols. Various sizes. A V.S. Pritchett Archive. In the early letter, Pritchett responds to Macauley's praise for "The Living Novel" with comments on the satisfactions of the writer, the paper shortage in Britainb and a brief assessment of his own capacities: "I have always been a better story writer than a novelist, though, rather defiantly, I am writing a novel now." The bulk of the file concerns the work which Pritchett published in Playboy Magazine. He seems pleased at gaining an American audience, complaining that The New Yorker "always turns down my best things?" Refers to his Life of Balzac; discusses John Collier, the Nobel Prize, students, etc. At one point, while a visiting professor at Smith College, Pritchett notes that "For the first time in my experience of writing classes, I notice that American students are turning to comedy - - - a good sign in a nasty world." A fine collection of letters from one of the most underappreciated writers of the modern age. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

Jonathan Cape, London 1973 - First English edition, hardcover issue. Top edge of the pages damaged from an abrasion, thus good in fine dustwrapper. Pynchon's editor Ray Roberts's copy, with his book label on the front pastedown. Roberts was an influential editor with Viking, Henry Holt, and then Little, Brown, and he worked closely with John Fowles, Martha Grimes, Thomas Pynchon, and Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. He began editing Pynchon when the latter went to Little, Brown, starting with his book *Slow Learner*. A very uncommon hardcover edition, like the American publisher, also issued in a simultaneous paperback edition. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

First edition, Copy "J" of 26 lettered copies (total edition 226 copies all signed by Burroughs, Gysin, and Miles), in full deluxe binding, upper cover with design by Gysin in red and black. Illustrated from photos by Brion Gysin. [6], 349, [blank] pp. 1 vols. 8vo. "The Name is Burroughs" - A Page of Manuscript. A unique copy of this Burroughs rarity, with a one-page original typescript of his autobiographical sketch, "The Name is Burroughs", laid in, signed by Burroughs, and bearing several autograph corrections to the text. The typescript page features most of Burroughs themes: dope fiends, weenies, drugs and guns. He also says, "On this set a [sic] unpublished novel called Queer was also written. I remeber [sic] the head of Ace books who published Junkie said he would go to jail if he published it ... Thanks to Allen Ginsberg and Carl Solomon Junkie was published by Ace Books in 1953." The essay was first collected in The Adding Machine: Selected Essays (1986), much altered from this manuscript fragment.

The Sermon on the Mount from the Gospel of St. Matthew, Chapters 5, 6, 7

Achille J. St. Onge, Worcester, MA 1973 - 55pp. The text is printed with large ornamental initials in red by Joh. Enschedé en Zonen. In a striking designer binding by Stephen Conway, evoking ancient wood and stone. Conway writes that his bindings "have a tactile quality, in keeping with the three dimensional qualities of the book," and "a sort of earthy, minimalist look, hinting at the content." The central panel of the covers is comprised of a plinth with three steps, covered in parchment stained with tones of copper and bronze. In the center is a cross cut from vellum. The four surrounding panels are covered with hand-painted paste-paper patterned with wood grain and sealed with a matte wax finish. The panels are slightly separated, revealing underlays of black text between them. Conway also painted the endpapers with textural shades of brown and black, giving them the appearance of wood and bark. The spine is gilt-titled mahogany morocco. Following his belief that the box in which a book is housed is part of the overall work and serves to enhance the viewer's experience, the book sits in a felt-lined compartment between the steps of a larger three-level plinth covered in hand-painted parchment. Conway was named a Fellow of Designer Bookbinders in 2000, and his work is held in collections worldwide, including the National Library of Scotland and the British Library. He is the current President of Designer Bookbinders. Extremely fine. (2 1/2 by 1 3/4; 64x43mm). [Attributes: Hard Cover]

Brief mit eh. U. und Gedichttyposkript mit eh.

Korrekturen. 4°. 1/2 und 2/3 S. Dat. 8. Okt. 1973. America’s Great Depression.

New York: MacMillan Company, 1973. First edition. Octavo, original cloth. Signed by the author, Murray N. Rothbard. Fine in a near fine dust jacket with light shelfwear. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. Books signed by Rothbard are rare. Since it first appeared in 1963, America?'s Great Depression has been the definitive treatment of the causes of the depression. It opens with a theoretical treatment of business cycle theory, showing how an expansive monetary policy generates imbalances between investment and consumption. He proceeds to examine the Fed's policies of the 1920s, demonstrating that it was quite inflationary even if the effects did not show up in the price of goods and services. He showed that the stock market correction was merely one symptom of the investment boom that led inevitably to a bust.

Alton Water: The Landscape of the Proposed Reservoir, Final Report (February 1973)

D G Thornley, 1973. Paperback. Collectible; Acceptable. Paperback; English language; a fair reading copy; this is the 'Final Report on Landscape and Amenity issues involved in the proposed development of the Alton Water Reservoir Site' (nature conservation, fishing, sailing, birdwatching) prepared for the Ipswich Corporation (ie the Borough Council); the development was formerly known as the 'Tattingstone Reservoir'; the 81-page Report comes with an envelope in the back, containing 2 copies of the large map 'Sheet 9' showing the landscaping and amenety proposals in different colours, and a copy of the large map 'Sheet 9a' showing (in colour) the proposed footpath network around the new reservoir, there is a small tear in the top of this map but no information is lost; also included is a 3-page typed letter from D G Thornley summarising his proposals; apparently the Final Report came in a folder with other maps but these are absent; the Report is 29.5 cm wide, 20.5 cm high, the pages of the Report have no annotations, there are a few creases to the covers and the (blank) top-right corner of the inside of the rear cover has a water stain, the white fabric strip covering the spine has lifted in some places; this is a scarce document regarding one of the most significant undertakings in Suffolk in the recent past. Your book will be securely packed and promptly dispatched from our UK warehouse. All international orders are sent Royal Mail airmail.
