COOK, Peter (Editor)
(London): (Archigram), 1970. First Edition. Wraps. Very good +. Small 4to. Pictorial self-wraps, side-stapled; pages double-wide and folded vertically. Very good plus to near fine. Light curling and creasing to upper-right edge of front cover. Minimal crease to rear corner. Lacks the originally attached packet of seeds. Else clean and crisp; bright and vivid. Final issue of this important little magazine of radical architecture. Proclaiming in this issue's editorial that "[a]rchitecture students are restless," the young Archigram group operated from a utopian futurist viewpoint, envisioning a psychedelic, Buckminster Fuller-inspired future, with technology leading the way in creating a better world. As Mike Webb put it, the group was founded "because we felt at the time that very exciting things were happening [in architecture], as indeed they were," particularly in the US -- but London lacked an avant garde and felt "empty and lifeless" [CLIP STAMP FOLD, p. 27]. ARCHIGRAM NINE consists of explosive, multicolored ilustrations of architectural projects, both real and imagined, involving a diverse array of ideas including the robotization of daily life and "whole earth" systems theories. Above all, the intent of the magazine was to indulge in a kind of inspirational reverie -- as expressed in the editorial, "the objective is quite sharp: to get things moving by the collective effort and dynamic of everybody who might read ARCHIGRAM 9."

Facsimile of the 1895 Edward Arnold edition. new Publisher's Introduction. 1st edition thus. - Gilt title on black cloth boards. 242pp. illustrated frontis, foldout map, adverts. 8vo. After obtaining Lobengula's permission he walked to the Zambesi River and covered some 1500 miles visiting chiefs throughout Mashonaland and inviting them to accept 'teachers'. He gained a wide personal experience of the African people and this work is especially informative on the domestic life, religious beliefs, customs, and character of the Mashona people and their subjugation by the Gaza and Matabele. He refers to other missionary bodies including the Dutch Reformed Church and the American missionaries. He believed that Christianisation would prepare the people to face the world of European immigration more successfully. After the arrival of the Pioneer Column his ministry was extended to the new white settlements. He served as Chaplain to the Column which marched on Lobengula in 1893 and describes this event in detail. Sold as part of full set of 36 volumes. see #26033. Bookplate to front pastedown.
