Black and White exhibition poster by the famous pop art artist Gy ouml rgy Kem eacute ny In the late 1960s and early 1970s Kem eacute ny was designing extremely colorful pop art compositions for posters He was one of the most important pop art painters and conceptual artists of the time in Hungary besides the painters L aacute szl oacute Lakner and Gyula Konkoly or the poster artist Aacute rp aacute d Darvas His posters were often erotic and shockingly fresh in the late 1960s and they usually had extremely vivid colors yellow orange green and pink In the year this poster was made 1970 he created another one for a folk art show in the Museum for Ethnography which has a completely different style it shows an intensive orange background with yellow and green drawn letters This parallel work of the artist raises the question why he decided to leave the colors A probable answer is that he was unconsciously influenced by the art of Scha aacute r since she usually creates large scale white plaster sculptures The melancholic monochrome world of Scha aacute r is overheard through the poster Kem eacute ny 39 s creed is to always make something unusual that 39 s why he changed his style in about every ten years After succeeding with pop art works and having many followers he turned to monochrome drawing in 1972 Until 1982 he was using only pencil drawing on his posters According to the artist the poster for the exhibition of Erzs eacute bet Scha aacute r represents a transition leading to the next period It also can be seen as an exception or … [Click Below for Full Description]

Hirschman, Jack
1970s-1990s. Ephemera. Very Good. Nine mixed media works on paper (one on art board), ranging from 8 by 10 to 8-1/2 by 14 inches. In these poem and word paintings, Hirschman uses pastels, watercolor, felt pen, and ballpoint pen. The paintings are typically political, with "No Nazi" slogans, calls for solidarity, and refrains about oppressed peoples. Hirschman has been called a Beat poet (he was born in 1933) but he calls himself an unreformed Communist. He has been the poet laureate of San Francisco and the writer in residence at the San Francisco Public Library. Only two paintings are signed, with initials. Those two, the largest, are somewhat faded--pin holes in the corner suggest they were posted on a wall for some time. The rest are near fine. PROVENANCE: From the large Hirshman collection assembled by the bookseller Louis Collins and consigned to Peter Howard, of Serendipity Books, in Berkeley. Acquired by us from Howard's estate. On the verso (back) of each painting is is the circled code "LC", which was Howard's code to designate material from Collins.

Mayr, Ernst
Belknap Press of Harvard University Press, Cambridge, MA, 1970. 453 pages. An important synthesis of then-current evolutionary theory, rewritten, updated, and adapted to a general audience. First edition (first printing). A fine copy in a very good, spine-faded dust jacket. This copy is inscribed to Mayr's long-time colleague at Harvard, the paleontologist Stephen Jay Gould, "To Steve Gould, with best wishes, Ernst." While the inscription isn't dated, it seems likely it is contemporary with the book's publication, when Gould was still new to the Harvard faculty. Gould credits Mayr for inspiring his important first book, Phylogeny and Ontology: "Ernst Mayr, in a passing comment, suggested I write this book"--p. vii. Mayr's theory of speciation directly underpins one of Gould's most widely cited and controversial theories, punctuated equilibrium. Signed books from Mayr are uncommon. Association copies of this magnitude, between two giants of evolutionary theory, are rare. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover; In Dust Jacket]

Corretta Scott King - My Life with Martin Luther King JR - 1970 U.K. first edition published by Hodder & Stoughton Inscribed to the front endpaper: "To Prime Minister and Mrs. Harold Wilson With gratitude for your support, and with warm personal regards Corretta Scott King". King visited the Wilsons at 10 Downing Street on several occasions, having tea with them. Harold Wilson was an active supporter of the civil rights struggle, speaking about the U.K.'s equivalent of the Montgomery Bus Boycott in Alabama(which was in fact the direct inspiration), which occurred in Bristol in 1963; Tony Benn joined the bus boycott and alerted Harold Wilson, who brought the issue up in a speech he was making at an anti-apartheid rally in London, bringing the matter to national attention. The boycott was then influential on Wilson's labour government, when he became Prime Minister one year later, in bringing about the Race Relations Acts of 1965 and 1968. The book is firmly bound in clean black cloth lettered and decorated in red and gilt, the extremities are slightly bumped and rubbed. The text block is slightly toned and dusty. The dust jacket is the original and not price clipped, it is slightly toned, rubbed and creased. A wonderful association between a major figure in the American civil rights movement and a British Labour Prime Minister. The book was probably given by King to the Wilsons when she visited in early 1970. Most inscribed copies of the book which appear for sale are U.S. editions, rather than the more uncommon U.K. edition. From the collection of Harold and Mary Wilson. 1970. Condition: Very Good. A FINE book in a FINE dust jacket. A superior copy. See the listing below for a more detailed description. Finney, Jack. TIME AND AGAIN. New York: Simon & Schuster, 1970. 1st edition. With "FIRST PRINTING" printed on the copyright page, which indicates that this is the correct 1st edition, 1st printing. With all of the necessary 1st edition, 1st issue points: No Book-Of-The-Month Club blind stamp (indentation) at the lower rear board; no mention of Book-Of-The-Month Club on the upp34 front flap of the dust jacket; with the number 20497 at the bottom of the rear panel of the dust jacket; with "Fifth Avenue from 34th to 14th" below the bottom illustration on lower front flap of the dust jacket; with the correct 1st issue price of $7.95 at the bottom of the front flap of the dust jacket. This is NOT a book club book. This is NOT an ex-library book. Buyer beware: There is a Book-Of-The -Month-Club (BOMC) edition that is very similar to the true 1st edition of TIME AND AGAIN. Some BOMC copies actually "say" "FIRST PRINTING" on the copyright page, even though they are NOT the correct 1st edition. If you come across a copy of TIME AND AGAIN, look carefully at the lower right of the rear binding. If there is a small indentation (sometimes referred to as a blind stamp), then you have a BOMC edition and not the correct 1st edition. Niven, Larry
New York: Ballantine Books. Paperback original first edition of this work, which went on to win the 1970 Nebula and 1971 Hugo award for best novel. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers. Signed by Larry Niven on the title page. In good condition. Larry Niven "set his mark on the United States science fiction field, winning four short-fiction Hugos, and both Hugo and Nebula in 1971 for Ringworld (1970), a capstone title in his seminal Tales of Known Space sequence...In the novels and stories of this sequence, and in some of his other work, he was seen for some time as hard sf's last best hope; and there can be no doubt that hard-sf writers dominant in the 1980s...owe much to the scope of Larry Niven's inventiveness, the sense he conveys of technological ingenuity as being ultimately beneficial, and his cognitive exuberance. The Tales of Known a wide-ranging, complex, unusually well integrated future history which, within an essentially optimistic and technophilic frame, provides an explanatory structure for the expansion of humanity into space, one notable from the first for the complexity of the Universe into which it introduces the burgeoning human race" (Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, 873). Marquez, Gabriel Garcia
New York: Harper and Row, 1970. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/Very Good. 422 pages. Perhaps greatest Latin American novel of the 20th century--the sort of book where most Spanish speaking booklovers can quote the opening line, "Muchos años después, frente al pelotón de fusilamiento, el coronel Aureliano Buendía había de recordar aquella tarde remota en que su padre lo llevó a conocer el hielo." [Translated here by Gregory Rabassa as "Many years later, as he faced the firing squad, Colonel Aureliano Buendia was to remember than distant afternoon when his father took him to discover ice."] In addition to being a great book, this book is a collector's favorite because of the two states of the dust jacket. In some copies, the first sentence of the jacket flap ends with "one of the most important novels ever written in Latin America!" Later printings of the jacket tone that sentiment down, replacing the exuberance of the exclamation mark with a more staid period. First editions are found with both the exclamation mark and the period. GGM's bibliographer Don Klein has done a lot of work on the question of the exclamation mark and has shown that most if not all of the review copies have the period (See Gabriel García Márquez: Una Bibliografía Descriptiva). What does that mean? In short, it's hard to say. It almost certainly does not mean that the first copies off the press had a period and someone at the printer changed it to an exclamation mark, only to change it back for the second printing. Besides, with modern printing presses, the first pri … [Click Below for Full Description]

1970. Both letters are in fine to near fine condition, as is the rest of the material in the archive. PLEASE SEE ALL 9 PHOTOS BELOW. [FILM DIRECTORS]. WALSH, RAOUL. An Archive of Correspondence Material Related to Film Director Raoul Walsh. 1970s. An archive of autograph letters, postcards signed, greeting cards, news clippings, magazine articles, and miscellaneous ephemera related to the life and career of the film director Raoul Walsh, in correspondence with his friends Victor Scherle and William Levy, authors of 'The Films of Frank Capra' and 'Affectionately, T. S. Eliot: The Story of a Friendship: 1947-1965.' The greeting cards are signed by Raoul's wife Mary. Mr. Walsh enjoyed an obviously warm personal and professional relationship with Scherle and Levy which was enhanced by their shared interest in the director Frank Capra. Two letters in particular are of note; one is a single-page typed letter signed by Raoul Walsh, dated 6-19-1974, on Walsh's personal printed stationery, and reads in full: "Dear Victor and William, Thanks for your nice gift. It arrived just in time, as Jimmy Cagney and John Wayne happened to be visiting on the day of its arrival. We had a rollicking afternoon, now they are gone and so is the cheese [the aforementioned gift]. Thanks again. Sincerely, Raoul". Raoul Walsh directed two John Wayne films, including Wayne's first starring role in 'The Big Trail' (1930) and 'Dark Command' (1940) and four films with James Cagney: 'The Roaring Twenties' (1939), 'The Strawberry Blonde' (1941), 'White Heat' (1949), and 'A Lion Is in the Streets' (1953). Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Harper and Row, 1970. On offer a scarce first edition, first printing AND first state of 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' by Gabriel Garcia Marquez, published by Harper and Row in the US in 1970. This is the true first English language edition in the iconic first state dust jacket with an exclamation mark at the end of the first paragraph of text on the front flap. Condition: near fine in a very good dust jacket. The book has no inscriptions of any sorts, no library stamps, no bumping, no tearing, no foxing, very minor shelf wear. A very close to fine copy. The first state dust jacket is NOT price clipped. It has a few very close tears and minor edge wear. At the top of the reverse side there is some residue which presumably could be rubbed off. We prefer not to tinker with this. Overall, one of the best copies on the market in the exceptionally scarce first state dust jacket. If first state dust jackets are found, they are usually price clipped or otherwise damaged. 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' is a true landmark novel that made a colossal impact on world literature. The magic realism of Marquez influenced writers like Salman Rushdie, Toni Morrison, Junot Diaz amongst other world class writers in their own right. Undoubtedly the novel that contributed most to Marquez receiving the Nobel Prize in 1982. This year we celebrate the 50th anniversary of 'One Hundred Years of Solitude' (or Cien Ańos de Soledad) which was first published on 30 May 1967 in Buenos Aires. In March 1970 the book was published for the first time in the English language in the US by Harper and Row. Wh … [Click Below for Full Description]

1970. Vintage original final draft script [dated variously between 11/2/82 and 11/12/82], USA. Reviled upon its release by some, and perhaps the only picture to have ever been nominated for three Golden Globes along with a Razzie award, SCARFACE is today generally considered a classic, visceral genre film, in which Al Pacino inhabits the title role to the hilt: a young punk who rises to power in the Miami drug scene in the late-1970s/early-1980s. Pacino's performance has since become iconic to many subcultures, rap and hip-hop not being the least of them. One of a number of key screenplays written by Stone, who would make his debut as a director three years later with SALVADOR and PLATOON. Â Red studio wrappers, 226 leaves, mechanically reproduced on eye-rest green stock with pink and blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 11/2/82 and 11/12/82. Brad-bound, studio mimeo, NEAR FINE in VERY GOOD+ wrappers. In a custom quarter-leather clamshell box. [Attributes: Soft Cover]

np: nd (ca. 1970?). Side-stapled olive construction paper wraps. Photomechanically duplicated from typescript (probably mimeograph, but possibly bad photo offset). Wrappers edge-worn and faded with some creasing. Light wear overall. Rear wrapper almost detached, else very good. 133pp. "I am writing down my reminiscences in the hope that a truthful account of the events experienced by my generation, describing the background and the ideas prevailing at that time, may be of interest and possibly of help, to my descendants." An essentially unpublished memoir about the Russian Revolution told from the point-of-view of the young daughter of an aristocratic family. The author later emigrated and worked as a translator in the U.S. Presumably printed in tiny quantities for private circulation only. Detailed, unsentimental, and honest: a revealing document.
