Committee to Defend the Panther 21 (New York, N.Y.)
New York: Committee to Defend the Panther 21, [1970]. Single leaves measuring 55 × 43 cm each, offset print to rectos (versos blank). No. 1 included along with two variant copies, on yellow and blue paper. No. 2 printed in blue ink and no. 3 in black and red, with a striking illustration overlapping the text. Very good copies. Complete run in three issues of this student protest wall paper, issued by the Committee to Defend the Panther 21 during the student strikes of 1970. The protests began with infamous the Kent State protest, and were a response to the United States invading Cambodia, and its general aggression in Southeast Asia. These three issues, each a single sheet printed recto only, give an overview of related activities taking place in New York, at Columbia, the New School, City University of New York, and others, as well as rallies held throughout the city. Issue one begins: "At hundreds of universities, thousands of students are On Strike. We have decided that we cannot continue our business as usual as long as our government continues to wage a criminal war against the peoples of Indochina and continues to repress political dissidents at home." The papers call for strikes to expose the complicity of religious and educational institutions (such as Temple Emanu-El and Columbia University) with the US war industry. They also refer directly to the case of twenty-one Black Panther members jailed and accused of conspiring to bomb public buildings, and call for their release along with other "dissidents" against the Nixon regime. In addition to detailed lists o … [Click Below for Full Description]

Strugatsky, A. & B.
N.p., [1970s-1980s]. 132 typewritten pp. 30x21 cm. Unbound. As new. This is a samizdat copy of the novel 'The Ugly Swans' by brothers and co-authors Arkady (1925-1991) and Boris (1933-2012) Strugatsky, the leaders of the Soviet science fiction. The ideas of Strugatsky duo were innovative but relevant to the period when people recognized the totalitarian system of the Soviet Union. Strugatsky found themselves engaged in the confrontation with the censorship and could not pretend on official approval throughout the Soviet rule. Their novels, premiered in periodicals in 1960s-1970s, were published in the book editions only in the late 1980s.  The exception no doubts is the novel 'The Ugly Swans' that had no access to official publication until the 1990s.

1970. Condition: Neuwertig. Committee to Defend the Panther 21 (New York, N.Y.)
New York: Committee to Defend the Panther 21, [1970]. Single leaves measuring 55 × 43 cm each, offset print to rectos (versos blank). In addition to detailed lists of scheduled protests, the papers provide contacts and telephone numbers. … [Click Below for Full Description]

The very rare First Edition. New York, Islatelctvo imeni chekhova (Chekhov Press), 1970. 14 x 22 cm. 228 pages. Original Softcover. Very good+ condition in protective mylar. Minor lesion to upper cover. Otherwise excellent. No names inside, no markings. First Edition of Brodsky's second book of poetry. From the library of important slavist Maurice Friedberg. Iosif Aleksandrovich Brodsky; (24 May 1940 - 28 January 1996) was a Russian and American poet and essayist. Born in Leningrad in 1940, Brodsky ran afoul of Soviet authorities and was expelled (″strongly advised" to emigrate) from the Soviet Union in 1972, settling in the United States with the help of W. H. Auden and other supporters. He taught thereafter at Mount Holyoke College, and at universities including Yale, Columbia, Cambridge and Michigan. Brodsky was awarded the 1987 Nobel Prize in Literature „for an all-embracing authorship, imbued with clarity of thought and poetic intensity". He was appointed United States Poet Laureate in 1991. In 1963, Brodsky's poetry was denounced by a Leningrad newspaper as „pornographic and anti-Soviet". His papers were confiscated, he was interrogated, twice put in a mental institution and then arrested. He was charged with social parasitism by the Soviet authorities in a trial in 1964, finding that his series of odd jobs and role as a poet were not a sufficient contribution to society. They called him „a pseudo-poet in velveteen trousers" who failed to fulfill his „constitutional duty to work honestly for the good of the motherland". The trial judge asked „Who has recognized you … [Click Below for Full Description]

POUSTCHINE, Alexandra
np: nd (ca. 1970?). Side-stapled olive construction paper wraps. Photomechanically duplicated from typescript (probably mimeograph, but possibly bad photo offset). Wrappers edge-worn and faded with some creasing. Light wear overall. Rear wrapper almost detached, else very good. 133pp. "I am writing down my reminiscences in the hope that a truthful account of the events experienced by my generation, describing the background and the ideas prevailing at that time, may be of interest and possibly of help, to my descendants." An essentially unpublished memoir about the Russian Revolution told from the point-of-view of the young daughter of an aristocratic family. The author later emigrated and worked as a translator in the U.S. Presumably printed in tiny quantities for private circulation only. Detailed, unsentimental, and honest: a revealing document.

New York: Hill & Wang, 1970. Octavo. Original black cloth, spine lettered in red, red endpapers. With the dust jacket. A very good copy in the price-clipped jacket, lightly sunned, 3 cm closed tear at head of front panel. First edition, first printing, presentation copy from the author to the artist Andy Warhol, inscribed on the title page: "For Andy who I met in Paris way back when Shirley G. and Edie S. was on same scene and *Pubik Pak had not yet entranced Europe Ted Joans May 1985 NYC *Page 138". Edie S is Edie Sedgwick (1943-1971), fashion model and one of Warhol's superstars; Shirley G is possibly Shirley Graham Du Bois (1896-1977), author, composer and African American rights activist. The page reference is to the inclusion of Joans's poetic address to Warhol, "whose simultaneous exploitation and exposure of popular culture's obsessive yet repressed sexuality Joans improvised into a kind of jazz chant and/or typographically experimental text" (The Concise Oxford Companion to African-American Literature, 2001, p. 226). The book also has the posthumous printed label of Warhol to the front pastedown, added after his death to establish the provenance of his books. Overall a remarkable association copy linking the prominent Beat poet with the king of Pop Art - their relationship dated back to the 1960s due to their mutual involvement in the Parisian art scene, as referenced by the inscription. Afrodisia was Joans's second collection of jazz-inspired revolutionary poetry issued by a mainstream publisher. [Attributes: First Edition]
