[AMERICA LATINA - YOUNG LORDS PARTY]
[Bronx, NY: Young Lords Party, Ministry of Information, ca.1970]. Striking poster produced by the Young Lords Party, featuring a series of four purple AK-47 assault rifles with the words "Health," "Food," "Housing," and "Education" printed in white on the stock of each weapon; the word "Struggle" is printed in black inside the magazine of each gun. These four words represented the key issues promoted by the Party, and the assault rifle iconography incorporated into the poster sends a clear message: the Young Lords aren't shy when it comes to armed struggle in the name of justice. At a recent East Harlem event at El Museo del Barrio (2015), artist Miguel Luciano re-created the images on the poster using startlingly lifelike materials. Not found in OCLC, though we note a copies held at the Schomburg and UC Santa Barbara. Original illustrated poster, offset printed in black and purple on white stock, measuring 45.5cm x 71cm (17 7/8" x 28"). Some pinpoint wear to extremities, small (1cm) closed tear to lower left edge, else very Near Fine / A (unbacked).

Mario Merz
Torino, Sperone, 1970. Libro d'artista. Niven, Larry
New York: Ballantine Books. Paperback original first edition of this work, which went on to win the 1970 Nebula and 1971 Hugo award for best novel. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers. Signed by Larry Niven on the title page. In fine condition without wear. A superior example. Larry Niven "set his mark on the United States science fiction field, winning four short-fiction Hugos, and both Hugo and Nebula in 1971 for Ringworld (1970), a capstone title in his seminal Tales of Known Space sequence...In the novels and stories of this sequence, and in some of his other work, he was seen for some time as hard sf's last best hope; and there can be no doubt that hard-sf writers dominant in the 1980s...owe much to the scope of Larry Niven's inventiveness, the sense he conveys of technological ingenuity as being ultimately beneficial, and his cognitive exuberance. The Tales of Known Space...is a wide-ranging, complex, unusually well integrated future history which, within an essentially optimistic and technophilic frame, provides an explanatory structure for the expansion of humanity into space, one notable from the first for the complexity of the Universe into which it introduces the burgeoning human race" (Encyclopedia of Science Fiction, 873). Arturo Vega
1970. 4 x 4 in. square sticker, three sections in composite (each color a different layer). Signed at verso by Vega. Though not a household name, everyone in America is familiar with the designs of Vega, who designed the logo for the Ramones and was considered the fifth member, in charge of their art and light shows. The swastika stickers were probably related to the large scale fluorescent swastikas which Vega painted in the 1970's. According to Vega, the swastikas were not made to condone the Nazi symbol, but rather to provoke. "The more I got into my swastika paintings, the more I really thought about them, the more I liked them and realized how powerful they were. And the more I thought about them as art. the fluorescent Day-Glo colors don't seem very natural, even though the colors do exist in nature - there are some fishes and some birds that are kind of fluorescent, but to me the colors represented this man-made madness. I mean, if you look at fluorescent colors all the time you go blind, they actually kill your vision, so already it's this radical thing. Then when you mix Nazism with fluorescent colors, it's even more manmade madness. I always thought that the ONLY way to really conquer evil is to make love to it." - Arturo Vega, quoted in McNeil and McCain, Please Kill Me: The Uncensored Oral History of Punk. Picasso, Pablo
Random House/Maecenas Press, 1970. These two volumes present Picasso's work as a master of a wide variety of graphic techniques and a sheer outpouring of ideas and imagery. There is no order here; the subject changes page by page and subsumes the viewer in the experience of great art. The condition of these books and their presentation portfolio seem contradictory. The case is in very poor condition, but the two volumes protected within are pristine. No bookplates, No markings. Additional Postage will be required. BACON, FRANCIS.
Self-published. B/w photograph of Francis Bacon and a companion in South Kensington, circa 1970. 88x130mm. John Edwards was Bacon s companion from the mid-1970s. From the East End of London, Edwards met Bacon in the Colony Club in 1974 through his older brother David Edwards, who was a friend of Muriel Belcher. Edwards and Bacon became very close friends from then onwards. John Edwards was Bacon s sole heir and in 1998 he donated the entire contents of the Reece Mews Studio to the Hugh Lane Gallery, Dublin. He is the subject of some of Bacon s most significant portraits such as Portrait of John Edwards,1988.Whatever John Edwards s other human qualities and many will testify to his engaging warmth and directness it is as the subject of many of Bacon s important paintings and for his proud commitment and deep sense of responsibility towards Bacon s artistic legacy that he will be remembered beyond his immediate circle of friends. He was born in Hackney, East London, on 10 September 1949, the third of the six children of John and Beatrice Edwards. John Edwards Senior was a dock-worker, but had been both a champion boxer and a World War II hero who rescued two crewmates from the sea after their ship, HMS Bedouin, had been sunk by enemy bombs; a year before his death in 1997 he was awarded the Maltese Cross. Though fond of his children, he could be a strict disciplinarian, against which the sensitive John, and to a lesser extent his three brothers, Leonard, David and Michael and his sisters Pat and Coleen, were inclined to rebel. Severely dyslexic and consequently poorly educated … [Click Below for Full Description]

Abu Dhabi - State Visits to Pakistan].
Pakistan, 1967 and 1970. An archive of 183 photographs: 133 loose b/w photos (ca. 30 x 25 cm), 30 smaller photos (ca. 5 x 6 cm) numbered and mounted together on a single sheet of paper, and 20 photos in the album. Original black half morocco, with green cloth sides with title and emblem of Pakistan's United Bank Limited on upper board. Includes numerous rolls of original medium format negatives. A trove of unpublished photographs depicting two official visits to Pakistan by HH Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. The earlier one, in 1967, is documented by a separate photo album containing images of the visit to Lahore, the second largest city of Pakistan, between 16 and 28 November 1967. (Almost 20 years later, in 1986, Sheikh Zayed would donate a hospital to the city, now the "Shaikh Zayed Medical Complex", which is one of the premier medical institutions in the country.) The album opens with a picture of HH Sheikh Zayed arriving in his car; later pictures show him being honoured and presented with an album very similar to the present one, and in the company of officials representing Pakistan's UBL bank (United Bank Limited). - The 30 small photographs show an audience with Sheikh Zayed as well as a banquet in his honour, attended by various Pakistani dignitaries including Agha Hasan Abedi (1922-95), the illustrious founder of UBL. These photos, apparently clipped from a set of medium format contact prints, are mounted on a sheet of coated black photographic paper. - The largest set in size and number shows the state visit that took place on 20-22 January 1970 at the invitat … [Click Below for Full Description]

[John Cage] Kostelanetz, Richard
Praeger, 1970. First Edition. INSCRIBED by Cage in 1971 to Ellsworth Snyder: "for Ellsworth Snyder, / with admiration and friendship / John Cage, Madison '71." Ellsworth Snyder and Cage were longtime friends. Snyder performed the composer's work on many occasions, perhaps most infamously at Cage's much-protested 1965 appearance at the University of Illinois: "At one point [Snyder] crawled under the piano, made a show of carefully marking a precise point on the under-body of the instrument with a tape measure, then hit that spot with a mallet. Even more provocative for that particular audience, he had planted a loose piano string in the instrument, and after striking an unusually percussive chord he slowly pulled the ostensibly broken string out of the piano. By this time the audience was screaming and throwing objects at the stage." (Johanne Rivest, "In Advance of the Avant Garde: John Cage at the University of Illinois, 1952-69," 1999). Snyder contributes an essay to this volume titled, "Chronological Table of John Cage's Life." Additionally, he is particularly thanked by editor Kostelanetz for his help in assembling the bibliographic sections at the end of the book. One of the earliest books to consider all aspects of Cage's career as writer, performer, artist, and composer. A superb association. Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket. Marshall, Jim (photographer); Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The
N.p, 1970. Archive of 17 photographs (seven double weight and ten single weight) of rock performers, circa the late 1960s and early 1970s. Struck by photographer Jim Marshall circa 1990s, most with his stamp and holograph identification number on the verso. Artists represented include Bob Dylan, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Sly and the Family Stone, Santana, Jim Morrison, Tina Turner, The Allman Brothers Band (including standalone shots of Duane Allman), and others. The Santana photos are especially notable, as the band, already a live sensation, is performing at Woodstock, just ahead of the release their first album. Among his most iconic photographs are images of Jimi Hendrix setting his guitar on fire at Monterey Pop, Johnny Cash performing at San Quentin, and The Beatles backstage at their final live concert at Candlestick Park. In 2014, he was posthumously awarded a Lifetime Achievement Grammy, the only photographer to be so honored. Photographs variously 5 x 7 inches (13 x 18 cm) and 8 x 10 inches. (20 x 25 cm). Lawrence, Kansas: Reconstruction Press, Inc., 1969-1970. Wraps. 17" X 11 1/4". Newsprint, folded, 12-24pp each. Age-toning at edges, with occasional dampstaining, light soiling, creasing, and chipping and tearing at edges and extremities. This item is oversize and will require additional postage for international or priority orders. A solid run of the first 34 issues of Vortex (née Reconstruction, Vortex arose after a merge with the Kansas City-based Screw), the radical underground newspaper of Lawrence, Kansas. Over just a few years, Vortex covered the budding Vietnam War protest movement, the Civil Rights Movement, police brutality and corruption, New Left politics, and the music, literature, art, and lifestyle of the counterculture movement. Frequently running into the law and even watched by the FBI, Vortex's humor didn't soften headlines like "Lawrence Courts Rape Blacks" or the diagram of a molotov cocktail in the second issue of Reconstruction. This set of 34 issues includes the following: Reconstruction: Vol. 1, No. 1, Issue 1, Feb. 10-24, 1969 (soiling to covers). Vol. 1, No. 2, Issue 2, March 3-17, 1969. [GORDY, Berry]
ca. 1963-1970. A collection of items from the personal effects of Berry Gordy, founder of Motown Records, and by most accounts the leading pioneer of popular African-American music in the 20th century, all purchased from his home in Detroit (the "Motown Mansion"). At the heart of the collection are three manuscripts, two of which are about 4" x 6", and one more, about 3.5" x 4". While the leaves are uncredited, they were all found in Gordy's desk, which was auctioned in October 2017. While two of the leaves seem to have been written at about the same time (see below), the other is on a different kind of paper. But, the handwriting is consistent throughout. Given the context (and the content), we feel confident attributing all of them to Gordy. The smaller leaf contains these lyrics, with what look like chord progressions over the first two lines. When played out, however, they sound more like individual melodic notes: "I've been around/had me some wonderful times/so carefree + blind/but now I'm all played/out/I shouldn't have stayed/out of love that/could fill my days life [sic]." The two other leaves are stationery from the New York Hilton. Based on the design and logo, we can give a broad date range of 1963-1971 (The phone number listed at the bottom of the leaves is JUDSON 6-7000, predating the all-number telephone standardization. Interestingly John Lennon's holograph lyrics for "Imagine," which are held at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, are on the exact same stationery, with the same phone number.) One of these two leaves contains some penciled lyrics to a Christmas s … [Click Below for Full Description]
