        In the Night Kitchen

1970. First Edition . Signed. SENDAK, Maurice. In The Night Kitchen. [New York]: Harper and Row, (1970). Tall thin quarto, original white cloth, mounted cover illustration, original dust jacket. $6500.Scarce first edition, advance review copy, of this wonderfully illustrated classic, inscribed for Burt Britton, the avid book collector and co-founder of Books & Co: ""For Burt—Mazel-Tov! Maurice Sendak. Dec. '70,"" with a small self-portrait by Sendak (presumably casting himself as Mickey). With publisher's advance review slip laid in.Sendak's homage to New York City and the movies of the 1930s, In the Night Kitchen ""spins the reader through the surreal fantasy of a child's dream, like Alice into Wonderland or Dorothy into Oz."" Like most of Sendak's work, Kitchen is ""a celebration of the primal, sensory world of childhood and an affirmation of its imaginative potency"" (Silvey, 586). It was a Caldecott Honor book in 1971. First-issue dust jacket, without the Caldecott medal affixed. Hanrahan A75. This copy is inscribed to Burt Britton, an avid book collector and eventually the co-founder of Books & Co in New York City. While working as a bartender at Village Vanguard in New York, Burt Britton found himself alone with Norman Mailer. When Mailer asked Britton, ""What do you want from me, Kid?"" after last call, Britton replied that he wanted Mailer to draw him a self-portrait. Mailer did and so began a lifelong collecting interest. Britton collected hundreds of self-portraits—first while working at Vanguard and later while working at the Strand bookstore. He solicited self-portraits from novelists such as Truman Capote and Jorge Luis Borges, from musicians such as Miles Davis, and even from sports stars such as Kareem Abdul-Jabbar. Before long, he was the owner of an exceptionally valuable collection. Random House eventually bought book rights to a selection of the portraits in 1976 as Self-Portrait: Book People Picture Themselves. In 1978, Britton moved to Books and Co. and continued his collection. This book contains a self-portrait sketch by Maurice Sendak, apparently implying that Mickey from In the Night Kitchen is him (or perhaps that all of his characters are him, as his self-portrait sketch in Where the Wild Things Are portrayed him as a Wild Thing).Book fine, bright, corner-clipped dust jacket with only slightest rubbing to extremities. A very nearly fine inscribed copy with a wonderful provenance.

A complete run in 42 issues (lacking Vol. II, No. 5/Issue 29) of the Israeli journal featuring articles from Israeli publications on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and other related issues and events, most issues 20-24 pp., many issues with subtitles including "Cease Fire - What Next?", "Will the Dove Return Bearing the Olive Leaf?", "Will the Real Moshe Dayan Please Stand Up?", "The King, The Bloodbath and the Palestinians", "Israel After Nasser", "Start Talking - Or Shooting Will Start", "Gaza - A Test Case", "The Map War", and many others. Not illustrated. The first issue with some pencil notations. 8vo. Printed wrpps. A few issues with rubber and postage stamp marks from being mailed, some very minor scattered creasing or soiling. Tel-Aviv (Tadmit Public & Distrib. Co. Ltd.) 1970-1972. The first issue of the newsletter carries a statement of purpose, which reads in part: "This bulletin aims at answering a long-felt need. Israel today occupies a central place in international news...A considerable number of journalists cover intensively, day by day, Israeli and Middle East news for the international press, radio and television. The information is often lacking in depth, objectivity and understanding...The Israeli news media suffer either from the impact of official propaganda or from the exaggerations of marginal opposition groups...Our endeavor is, to the best of our modest means, to fill this "vacuum". In presenting a carefully selected digest of the Israeli press and features specially written for this bulleting, we hope to give a vivid picture of Israel as it really is...Our bulletin, conceived as a medium for independent opinion and free inquiry, will concentrate on the problem with which Israelis, Arabs and world public opinion is concerned - the search for a peaceful solution to the Middle East." As of March 2017, WorldCat locates 4 holdings in the United States.

        All Religions are One.

Clairvaux, Jura, France: for The Trianon Press for The William Blake Trust, London, 1970 - Quarto. Original green full morocco, titles to spine gilt. With the original marbled slipcase. Slight darkening to spine, otherwise a fine copy. Facsimile plates thoughout achieved by collotype, some with watercolour washes applied by hand. First edition thus, publisher Arnold Fawcus's copy, copy A of 26 lettered copies reserved for the Trustees of the William Blake Trust and the Publishers, in full morocco with a set of proofs showing the progressive states of the collotype process, from a total edition of 662 copies on Arches pure rag paper made to match the paper used by Blake. This copy derives from the Trianon Press Archive, from the estate of Trianon publisher and founder Arnold Fawcus. Blake scholar Geoffrey Keynes (1887-1982), the brother of John Maynard, provides a commentary and bibliographical history. He summarises the gnomic intent of Blake's early tractate thus: "Blake identifies the Poetic Genius, that is God, with 'Divine Humanity'. Man is therefore uniform, yet with infinite variety in the individuals. All men, thus derived from a universal Poetic Genius, have but one religion, though each nation has its difference beliefs according to its needs." [Attributes: First Edition]

Preliminary cover design for Penny Candy, by Edward Fenton.

      c. 1970. Watercolor and ink on paper, measuring 8 1/4 by 7 1/4 inches. Archivally matted and framed. Preliminary artwork for the cover design of Fenton's book, a fantasy story based on the English "Tinker Tailor" rhyme. A copy of the trade paperback edition of the book, which was published by Holt in 1970, is included in a sleeve affixed to the back of the frame. The key differences between this preliminary drawing and the finished work are most discernible in the five children standing in front of the candy counter: in the preliminary artwork, the children's clothing is colored, their arrangement is different, as is their height in relation to the counter. Gorey also used some ink flourishes to make the titling, which lines up vertically on either side of the central image, appear more like pieces of candy. This was not used in the published version. Gorey's watercolor work for published books seldom appears on the market. Very fine in an attractive black acrylic and resin frame.

Der Roman ist ein Solitär in der Literatur des 20.
