I Seem To Be A Verb

New York: Bantam Books, 1970. First edition. Softcover. near fine. Small Octavo. 192pp. Original silver illustrated wraps with black lettering on the cover; protected by modern mylar. Photo-illustrated title page. Exceptional production by the American architect and inventor in collaboration with producer Jerome Angel and designer Quentin Fiore. Experimental book full of utopian plans and musings, insights with the explicit notion that humans aren't static beings but constantly in motion, verbs so to speak, not nouns. The unusual concept underlines the highly creative content of Fuller's book, with upper half of each page reading in black from front to back and the text in lower half upside down in green, so that the book also can be read in reverse. His intention "What I am trying to do..." is a sentence stretching over half a page without punctuation is, well: "The most important fact about Spaceship Earth: An instruction book didn't come with it." Beautifully illustrated with reproductions of photographs and illustrations. Light scuffing along front joint and lightly creased at middle of spine. Previous owner's name inked to first page. Else in near fine condition.

Ernst Scheidegger - Photograph und Verleger. Mehrfarbige Lithographie..

90 x 64 cm, Rahmengrösse (100 x 75 cm) (versilberter Rahmen), Min. gebräunt Exemplar 44 von 100. Unten rechts m. Bleistift sign. (VARLIN). Die Litho gehört zu einer Mappe, die Varlin in Zusammenarbeit mit Ernst Scheidegger um 1970 geschaffen hat, in der auch der Schriftsteller Jürg Federspiel vorkommt. (Dank an Frau Guggenheim vom Varlin-Archiv).

The singularities of gravitational collapse and cosmology," in Proceedings of the Royal Society of London, A 314, 1970, pp. 529-548

London: Royal Society, 1970 FIRST EDITION of the "culmination of Hawking and Penrose's decade long collaboration was the publication of this proof of their singularity theorem (Hawking, General Relativity, 15). In this paper, Hawking and Penrose employ topological and geometrical tools, now called global methods, "to prove that if the general theory of relativity is the correct description of the universe, then there must have been a singularity at the beginning of time. The Big Bang appears to be the exact opposite of the gravitational processes inaugurated by the collapse of a dying star into a black hole. If this is true, the cosmic censor (a term coined by Penrose to illustrate the bashful nature of singularities hidden within black holes) had a t least overlooked the exposure of one naked singularity -- that which formed the point of origin of our expanding universe some 15 billion years ago" (Knox, From Newton to Hawking, 438). "In scientific terms, a gravitational singularity (or space-time singularity) is a location where the quantities that are used to measure the gravitational field become infinite in a way that does not depend on the coordinate system... The Penrose-Hawking singularity theorems are a set of theoretical results based on general relativity which attempt to answer the question of when gravitation produces singularities. The first situation is where matter is forcibly compressed to a point (a space-like singularity)" (Williams, Singularity, 1). The Penrose-Hawking theorem "applies if the following four physical assumptions are made: (i) EInstein's equations hold (with zero or negative cosmological constant), (ii), the energy density is nowhere less than minus each principal pressure nor less than minus the sum of the three principal pressures (the 'energy condition'), (iii) there are no closed timelike curves, (iv)every timelike or null geodesic enters a region where the curvature is not specially aligned with the geodesic" (Hawking and Penrose). CONDITION & DETAILS: London: The Royal Society. Complete volume. 4to. 9.75 by 7 inches (213 x 138mm). [4], 602, [6]. Bearing only a small stamp on the rear of the title page, otherwise no other ex-libris marks whatsoever. The volume is illustrated throughout with in-text figures and 10 plates, one color. Handsomely rebound; gilt lettered at the spine. The marbled paper boards were purposefully scuffed by the binder in order that the book, though rebound, appears somewhat aged. Solidly and very tightly bound. Bright and clean throughout. Fine condition.
