THE CAREER OF A FRANKIST : MOSES DOBRUSCHKA AND HIS METAMORPHOSES [INSCRIBED BY THE AUTHOR]

Jerusalem 1970 - Original Wrappers. [v]-viii, [127]-181 (ie 4 + 55 pages) ; 22 cm. Chiefly in Hebrew, summary in English with title pages in both languages. Offprint from: Zion : quarterly for research in Jewish history, V. 35. This copy is inscribed by the Scholem on the front cover. "Frankism, a Jewish religious movement of the 18th and 19th centuries, centered on the leadership of the Jewish Messiah claimant Jacob Frank, who lived from 1726 to 1791. At its height it claimed perhaps 50, 000 followers, primarily Jews living in Poland and other parts of Eastern Europe. Unlike traditional Judaism, which provides a set of detailed guidelines called halakha that are scrupulously followed by observant Jews and regulate many aspects of life, Frank claimed that ‘all laws and teachings will fall’ and following antinomianism asserted that one's most important personal obligation of every person was the transgression of every boundary. " (Wikipedia, 2016) In this publication, Scholem tells the story of Moses Dobruska, a first cousin once removed of Jacob Frank (and Frankist himself) , who was also an active Jacobin during the French Revolution. Dobruska changed his name twice during his life (first to Schönfeld, and then to Frey) because of his various political and religious beliefs. He was executed by guillotine for treason and espionage during the Revolution on 5 April 1794. Scholem, who published several works on Frankism throughout his life, inscribed this copy, "With Blessings and Friendship, G. Scholem. " Also inserted is a return address from the Israel Academy of Sciences and Humanities, which is also signed by the Scholem, indicating that the package was sent from him at the Academy. SUBJECT(S) : Jews -- Austria -- Biography. Jacobins -- France -- Biography. Some wear to wrappers. Overall very good condition. (AMR-48-36A) [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

The Trumpet of the Swan; [with:] Charlotte's Web.

New York: Harper & Row, Publishers,, 1970 & 1952. Together with a typed letter signed. Together 2 works, octavo. Charlotte's Web: original pictorial boards, illustrated endpapers. With the dust jacket. Trumpet of the Swan: original blue cloth, titles to spine and front cover gilt and silver, blue endpapers. With the dust jacket. Accompanied by a typed letter signed, one sheet, printed on recto only. Charlotte's Web: illustrations by Garth Williams; Trumpet of the Swan: illustrations by Edward Frascino. An excellent set in bright jackets. First edition, first impression of The Trumpet of the Swan, inscribed by the author in the month of publication on the front free endpaper: "For John A. Griswold, who, I am sure, will be surprised at what goes on in Bird Lake. Many thanks for your help in my dilemma. E. B. White"; together with a later printing of Charlotte's Web also inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For John A. Griswold, with many thanks for helping with a book as yet unborn – or unhatched – E. B. White", and a typed letter signed by White, addressed to the same recipient and dated 20 December 1968. These significant presentation copies were both inscribed by White to the curator of birds at the Philadelphia Zoo, John A. Griswold, who had provided invaluable help to White in his research for The Trumpet of the Swan. In October 1968, White asked his old friend, journalist Howard Cushman, to do some "sleuthing" for him at the Philadelphia Zoo, photograph the captive trumpeter swans there, "and maybe even grill a curator". Subsequent to Cushman's visit to the zoo and meeting with Griswold, White sent the curator this copy of Charlotte's Web in thanks, together with a list of further questions on procedures for catching and pinioning trumpeter swans. Griswold's response in a letter dated 13 December 1968 (held by the Morgan Library), thanks White for the book and responds to his queries. It is White's letter in reply which accompanies these two books, thanking Griswold "for responding in such detail" to his questions and promising that "if my book ever sees the light of day, you can be sure a copy will land on your desk". White fulfilled the promise, duly sending him this copy of The Trumpet of the Swan to Griswold. White also put Griswold into the book as "the Head Man in charge of birds" (he retained the name Griswold in the first draft but this was dropped in the published version). White's interest in the swans at Philadelphia Zoo had been piqued five years prior to the book's publication: he wrote to Howard Cushman on 21 July 1965, noting that "if I get to Philly in the near future it will be because I am irresistibly drawn to your Zoo's bird park, where, as you probably don't know, a pair of trumpeter swans ... recently hatched five cygnets. I have never seen a trumpeter swan and this would be my chance" (LaBrie, p. 85).

        Dodge Sportflite" Concept Art

1970 - Watercolor and pastel on illustration board. Signed "William A. Moore" Intriguing concpetual drawing for an unusual pickup truck Three views of a rather dazzling vision of a pickup truck, and though the "Dodge Sportflite" was never produced, the idea of making more luxurious and innovative pickup trucks has definitely caught fire since the time of this handsome drawing. This design brings the driver over the engine, as in many heavier trucks, giving the driver greater command of the road, especially for town and city driving. The styling of the cab and cargo bed is anything but mundane with lines, vents, a black ribbon around the cab, and two large additional brake lights that add a notes of elegance and creativity to the overall effect. "In 1956, William Moore won the General Motors Fisher Body Craftsmen' Guild National Exhibition for his car design. In 1968, he accepted a position as Head of Design for Lear in Reno, Nevada. William Moore's art has been placed in.the Smithsonian and the Favell Museum of Art and Artifacts." (The Museum of Automotive Art and Design website).         I Seem To Be A Verb

New York: Bantam Books, 1970. First edition. Softcover. near fine. Small Octavo. 192pp. Original silver illustrated wraps with black lettering on the cover; protected by modern mylar. Photo-illustrated title page. Exceptional production by the American architect and inventor in collaboration with producer Jerome Angel and designer Quentin Fiore. Experimental book full of utopian plans and musings, insights with the explicit notion that humans aren't static beings but constantly in motion, verbs so to speak, not nouns. The unusual concept underlines the highly creative content of Fuller's book, with upper half of each page reading in black from front to back and the text in lower half upside down in green, so that the book also can be read in reverse. His intention "What I am trying to do..." is a sentence stretching over half a page without punctuation is, well: "The most important fact about Spaceship Earth: An instruction book didn't come with it." Beautifully illustrated with reproductions of photographs and illustrations. Light scuffing along front joint and lightly creased at middle of spine. Previous owner's name inked to first page. Else in near fine condition.
