        Mog the forgetful cat.

London William Collins Sons & Co., Ltd.,, 1970. Large octavo. Publisher's pictorial boards. With the dust jacket. Illustrated throughout by the author. Ends gently bumped, otherwise fine. First edition, first impression, in the very scarce jacket, this a rare presentation copy inscribed, "To Sheila Macleod in friendship and gratitude! Judith Kneale". Kerr had married screenwriter Nigel Kneale in 1954, but kept her maiden name for her books. This is the first instalment in Ker's beloved Mog series. The warm inscription was likely to fellow author Sheila Macleod (b.1939), whose first novel The Moving Accident was, like Kerr's Orlando, published in 1968. Her second work, the Snow White Soliloquies, was published in the year of Mog's publication.

'The Empire Trilogy' [Comprising 'Troubles'/'The Siege of Krishnapur'/'The Singapore Grip'] First UK Editions 1970-1978

Cape/Weidenfeld Nicolson, 1970. Hardcover. Near Fine. A set of first edition, first printings published by Jonathan Cape and Weidenfeld and Nicolson between 1970 and 1978. All three novels by Farrell, constituting 'The Empire Trilogy', are generally considered only to be connected thematically, although the character of 'Archer', who appears in 'Troubles', makes an appearance in 'The Singapore Grip' also. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time all three first editions have been presented as a set. 'Troubles', published by Jonathan Cape in 1970, is a near fine book with the red top stain still present – the book is without inscriptions. In a very good+ wrapper which is unclipped (45s/£2.25 as called for) with some wear to the spine ends and rubbing to the edges and corners. Superb dust wrapper illustration by Bill Botten. 'The Siege of Krishnapur', published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson in 1973 (winner of the Booker Prize of that year) is a very good book with one name to the ffep in a very good (internally reinforced) wrapper which is clipped and has some wear in places as well as a neatly repaired closed tear to the foot of the front panel. 'The Singapore Grip', published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson in 1978, is a near fine book without inscriptions in a very good+ wrapper which is not price clipped and has some fading to the spine as well as some wear to corners and extremities. Since 'Troubles' was announced as the 'winner' of the Lost Booker Prize of 1970, interest in Farrell's work has risen dramatically. The trilogy exists as his legacy and displays his superb writing talent so tragically cut short in August 1979.

Various places, 1920s to 1970s. - Comprehensive collection of books and reprints from the private library of the Austrian physicist (who was nominated almost 50 times for the Nobel Prize but never received it) and her nephew, the physicist Otto Frisch, with whom in 1939 she published a paper which for the first time interpreted Hahn's and Strassmann's prediction of nuclear fission correctly (in: "Disintegration of Uranium by Neutrons: A New Type of Nuclear Reaction". Nature 143 (3615), 239). The collection comprises only books and papers dealing with aspects of modern physics, quantum theory, relativity, atomic physics etc., and includes 13 inscribed copies, including Max Hahn (in: "Atlas typischer Nebelkammerbilder" by Wolfgang Gentner and others) and Rudolf Virchow (mounted inscription signed in his "Descendenz und Pathologie"). A very fine inscription is from Max Delbrück, calling himself her "runaway son" (in: John Cairns and others, "Phage And The Origins of Molecular Biology"). Another is from Bern Dibner, who inscribed his most famous work, "The Heralds of Science" to her on 26 May 1955. In this anthology of what Dibner called "the most influential publications in the history of science", Meitner is represented as no. 168. In the margin, she expressed her disagreement with J. B. L. Foucault's description of the rotation of the earth in a single word: "No!" - Detailed description available upon request. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Rotation of the Andromeda Nebula from a Spectroscopic Survey of Emission Regions" in Astrophysical Journal 159 No. 2 Part 1, 1970, pp. 379-405

FIRST EDITION IN ORIGINAL WRAPS OF VERA RUBIN'S DISCOVERY OF "EVIDENCE FOR THE EXISTENCE OF DARK MATTER"; RUBIN'S FIRST PAPER ON GALAXY ROTATION. Rubin died in December of 2016 without having won the Nobel Prize in Physics that so many in the scientific community believe she deserved for her identification of the 'galaxy rotation problem', the missing mass in galaxies. Rubin had long harbored an interest in galaxy dynamics, and she and her frequent collaborator Kent W. Ford realized that while many had guessed as to what galaxy rotation must be like, a detailed study to demonstrate any given hypothesis had yet to be made. "Rubin and Ford tracked Andromeda's (M31) rotation from nearly one edge of its disk to the other - a span of almost 4 degrees, which at Andromeda's distance translates into 160,000 light-years, or 80,000 light-years on either side of Andromeda's center. The galaxy's velocities, however, failed to match the declining pattern that prevailed in the solar system. Instead, after rising to 270 kilometers per second, Andromeda's velocities fell only slightly, then held steady all the way to the disk's edge. In other words, much of the rotation curve was flat. It was as if Pluto sped around the Sun as fast as the Earth" (Croswell, The Universe at Midnight, 93). By 1970, Rubin had fully "mapped out the rotation curve for Andromeda; the star velocities remained the same however far out she looked. With the velocities of the stars remaining high at the edge, centrifugal forces should be throwing Andromeda's outer stars off into deep space. By rights, Andromeda should be falling apart. All the data - and there was a great deal of it - said the same thing; in fact, every time they looked at a spectrum the data kept piling up. Soon there would be 20, then 40, then 60 rotation curves, and they were all flat. The problem was that they didn't understand what they had found. Given the consistency, breadth, and depth of their data, however, they decided to publish the paper offered here. Having noticed differences in how much mass astronomers were able to see as compared to how much physics implied should be present, the concept of dark matter was posited first in 1932 by Jan Oort. But few paid attention to their research in part because no one had yet "predicted what dark matter's existence might mean for galaxy dynamics" (Scoles, How Vera Rubin confirmed dark matter, Astronomy Magazine, 4 Oct. 2016). Even Rubin and Ford, working nearly forty years later and on this paper did not initially recognize the meaning implied by the flat rotation curves they kept finding. After publication and in frustration at being unable to make sense of what she was looking at, Rubin abandoned the data and started making sketches on a piece of paper. As she did so, Rubin told the journalist Maria Popova, "suddenly I understood it all". "If a halo of dark matter graced each galaxy, she realized, the mass would be spread throughout the galaxy, rather than concentrating in the center. The gravitational force - and the orbital speed - would be similar throughout. Unless, that is, it was surrounded by dark matter" (Brooks, Scientific Mysteries, 15). "Rubin and Ford had discovered the unseeable stuff that influences not only how galaxies move, but how the universe came to be and what it will become… Within a few years of the M31 observations, physicists like Jeremiah Ostriker and James Peebles provided the theoretical framework to support what Rubin and Ford had already shown, and dark matter settled firmly into its celebrated place in the universe" (Scoles). CONDITION & DETAILS: Chicago: University of Chicago Press. Quarto. (9.5 x 6.75 inches; 238 x 169mm). Ownership signature on front wrap reading "Tamman", likely the astrophysicist G. Tamman. Complete issue in original wraps; very slight toning and scuffing at the spine and edges of the wraps (see photo). Professionally restored at the spine. Housed in new clamshell case, gilt-lettered at the spine. Bright and clean throughout. Near fine condition.

The Empire Trilogy' [Comprising 'Troubles'/'The Siege of Krishnapur'/'The Singapore Grip'] First UK Editions 1970-1978

Cape/Weidenfeld Nicolson 1970 - A set of first edition, first printings published by Jonathan Cape and Weidenfeld and Nicolson between 1970 and 1978. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Eerste Nederlandse vertaling van 'one of the most influential books in the whole history of criminology' (Printing and the mind of men, 209).

        Photographs]: 1970s New York Punk

New York 1970 - A collection of vintage prints by Soho News photographer Michael Uffer of the downtown New York punk scene of the end of the 1970s. 21 vintage black and white prints Signed and stamped by the photographer, some dated, each measuring 11" x 22". All the prints are about fine. An archive of unseen photographs documenting the late '70s downtown punk scene taken at various venues, most notably at Max's Kansas City. The collection depicts the musicians and artists of the scene at their most unvarnished including Johnny Thunders with the Heartbreakers; Tomata du Plenty of The Screamers; Ari Up, Viv Albertine, and Tessa Pollitt of The Slits; Lydia Lunch; Wendy O. Williams; Edith Massey with Edie and the Eggs; the Dead Boys; Jerry Only; James Chance and the Contortions; and Middle Class, among others. New York indisputably (well, disputably, but in that case wrong-headedly) created punk's first home with musicians like David Johansen and Johnny Thunders creating a new sound based on the trash culture of the late 1960s. All Music Guide describes, "Their sound was basic (two-minute, three-chord rockers) and stripped-down (just guitar, bass, and drums), and their attitude, bringing a sense of dumb fun back to rock & roll, stood in sharp contrast to nearly every prevailing musical trend of the '70s." Meanwhile the likes of Lydia Lunch of Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, who was inspired to run away to New York because of the New York Dolls, and Wendy O. Williams, forged ahead creating a new image of women in music. These photographs show gigs candidly with cornflakes being strewn over the fans, James Chance of the Contortions collapsed on stage, Wendy O. with black electrical tape over her nipples screaming into a microphone, an anonymous fan covered in what appears to be blood laying on stage during a Middle Class set while a girl spastically dances in the foreground, and Ari Up of the Slits in a dingy hotel room. The raw power of punk can be seen in this assemblage of vintage early Downtown Scene images.

        One Hundred Years of Solitude

New York: Harper & Row, 1970. First edition. Near Fine/Near Fine. First printing in a first state dust jacket ending the first paragraph with an exclamation point. A Near Fine example of the book with "First Edition" stated on the copyright page and no number line on the final page. Unread with just a touch of spotting/foxing to the top edge of the closed page block, otherwise Fine. In a bright, Near Fine dust jacket with a tiny dampstain on the front flap and very trivial wear at the spine ends and corners. Along with "Love in the Time of Cholera," "One Hundred Years of Solitude" is considered Marquez' greatest work, and is the book that made his international reputation. First published in 1967 - and in English in 1970 -- the wide spanning story of the Buendia family would achieve incredible popularity and, in fact, be responsible for lifting the future Nobel Prize winner out of poverty as it would go on to sell more than 30,000,000 copies. Considered the ultimate expression of his style of magical realism, "One Hundred Years of Solitude" has won awards in numerous countries and was listed on Le Monde's list of the "100 Books of the Century." "He has also written a novel so filled with humor, rich detail and startling distortion that it brings to mind the best of Faulkner and Gunter Grass. It is a South American Genesis, an earthy piece of enchantment, more, as the narrator says of Macondo, 'an intricate stew of truth and mirages.'" (Contemporary New York Times Book Review). Near Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.
