Insomnia Or The Devil At Large. [Issue C, variant; Portfolio box with 12, pencil- signed prints & signed, limited book].

Loujon Press, Albuquerque, New Mexico, 1970. First Edition [Issue C, variant] Each of the 12 prints signed & dated by Miller in pencil, under the printed signatures, & book signed & dated. - This copy consists of an (approx.) 18 x 24 1/2" (x 1 3/4" deep) wooden portfolio box, the top is a wooden panel that slides in grooves; reverse side of top is a plywood panel stained dark brown with upper & lower applied two-toned wooden strips, red edges; large mounted photo of Miller seated on toilet, title reading: from Loujon Press Insomnia or the Devil at Large Henry Miller. The long sides of the box are covered in a red, green & gold "oriental" geometric floral design paper, other 2 sides & inner sides of box stained black, underside of box stained dark red. Top is followed by a smaller piece of corrugated cardboard used as protector in shipping, then a larger sheet of pasteboard covered in gray textured paper on front with a 6 1/2 x 5 1/4" mounted b+w photo of girl ("Hoki") in the upper section. Then follows the 12 (approx. 17 x 22") prints: reproductions of Miller's drawings & watercolors, each signed & dated in pencil by Miller, 10/15/70 (the silver sheen of the graphite is visible on each of these soft pencil signatures); the bottom of the box is lined with plastic foam with a central well to hold a copy of the spiral bound book (Insomnia), reproducing Miller's manuscript, photos, etc., bottom of this well lined with a brown & tan toned paper. The copy of Insomnia supplied with this set shows these variations: wrap around cloth backed dustjacket shows the large "oriental" floral design printed in blue & black with light green squares & light yellow / tan over the gold background rather than red & black mentioned in Miller bibliography (see below for comparison). Signed at head of colophon page: Henry Miller May 1st 1970, above this rubberstamped in red is: Edition G 385 copies, book signed, On the reverse of last page of Miller's printed text, has been stamped in red: "Colophon Oversights & Erratum: Book is autographed in Ed. G. Ed. C, gold nameplate, not silver. Book also signed in Editions C, B & A. Ed. A: pub. price,[-]; prepub, prepaid,[-]. Wm. Webb lives in Carmel, not Big Sur. "Hoki" is Hiroko Tukudu Miller's nickname." The paper covered sides of the wooden box show minor rubbing to some edges; small oval where paper surface has been scratched off near one corner, very small nick to left side of mounted photo on top of box, else, a fine & well preserved set, of which less than 10 were produced. This copy does not have the gold nameplate mentioned in the Bibliography below, nor any sign of ever having one & the colors of the book dustjacket, etc. vary from the red & gold mentioned in Bibliography (see description above). Here follows the Bibliography citation for issue C for comparison: [Henry Miller Bibliography, 1993, p. 409]: "A175c Insomnia Or The Devil At Large 1970 First Edition/Issue C: 12 Prints Signed [overprinted on Miller bibliography that is in English and Japanese] / [ornamental design] A Loujon Press Award Book [ornamental design] / Insomnia [red] or the Devil at Large / Henry Miller / [Loujon Press] / [Albuquerque, New Mexico] For this edition, the 12 prints are signed in pencil by Miller [10/15/70], but not inscribed to the buyer, as in Edition B. The book is also signed by Miller. Red and gold foil used on the book dust jacket, with the name plate on the portfolio box in solid gold. Variations of inlaid wood trim and color of foil on the portfolio box occurs within this edition. Published at [-], in a planned edition of 192 copies, but later reduced to 39 due to slow pre-publication sales. It is believed that less than 10 copies of this edition were actually published." This copy was once owned by a personal friend & admirer of Henry Miller's writing & watercolors, it was obtained for him by "Gypsy" of the Loujon Press in the early 1970's. List of plates as they appear in this volume: [1] “Insomnia No. 1.” [signed in plate]: Henry Miller 8/3/66; [signed by Miller in soft pencil under this]: Henry Miller 10/15/70. [2] Insomnia 2.       New York, Chekhov Press. 1970 - 8°. 232 pp. Original cardboard, sheets in very good condition. slightly soiled binding. "Stop in the desert" is the second book of poems by Joseph Brodsky and the first composed by the poet himself. Here the rare first edition and it is the first It is considered the result of the early works of the poet. With a short biography of Brodsky and an introduction by H.H. Joseph Brodsky (1940 – 1996) was a Russian and American poet and essayist. Born in Leningrad, he ran afoul of Soviet authorities and emigrated to the United States. A Halt in the Desert . . .included seventy short poems, two long ones ("Isaac and Abraham" and "Gorbunov and Gorchakov"), and four translations from John Donne. Some of the content overlaps with that of Short Poems and Narratives ("Isaac and Abraham" and twenty-two early pieces), but more than two-thirds is new work. He discarded everything he considered imitative or immature . . . he laid out the sections and the order of poems himself." [Attributes: First Edition]

        Hippiesque Photo Album circa 1970

Very Good. Large quarto. Homemade flexible card wrappers with plastic overlay on wrappers and leaves, reinforced with oak tag at the spine. Small tears, very good or better. 18 gelatin silver photographs. Various sizes, one is very small, but the majority are oversized. Images of nature, subways and subway platforms, hippies being busted by police, smoking pot, and at a rock concert, a military grave and a jet plane contrail; the tiny image appears to be a prom picture. Most of the images are captioned with lyrics from then contemporary rock songs (except one from John-Paul Sartre) including Janis Joplin, Buffalo Springfield, Leonard Cohen, Blind Faith, Neil Young, Dave Mason, and others. None of the songs were originally released after 1970, and most seem to be front 1960-1970. The overarching theme seems to be the grittiness of life and ends with the caption "Let There Be Life". Cosmic, man.

        Marino Marini: Complete Works

New York: Tudor Publishing Co. 1970. SIGNED LIMITED FIRST EDITION, number 7 of only 50 copies with original color lithograph and SIGNED by internationally acclaimed Italian artist Marino Marini. "Early in his career (1931) Marino Marini used the word 'poesia' to describe the quality he wished to render in his sculpture -- he was referring to his portraits. It is a word that will serve to characterize the indefinable personal quality that gives unity to an artist's work -- not the formal unity of which enough has been written here and elsewhere, but the unity of a personal vision of reality, a private world of images or symbols that the artist, by his sovereign power of transmutation, embodies in forms that possess not only imaginative power but also visual delights" (Herbert Read, in the introduction).Complete with a stunningly sharp original lithograph, as well as countless reproductions of Marini's sculptures and paintings.New York: Tudor Publishing Co., 1970. Folio, (36x26 cm); leather-bound book with beautiful gilt detailing on spine and cover; top edge gilt. Housed in original slipcase. Signed by Marini and numbered 7/50 on the lithograph. A fine copy, with particularly rich colors on the lithograph. Fine.

        Mog the forgetful cat.

London William Collins Sons & Co., Ltd.,, 1970. Large octavo. Publisher's pictorial boards. With the dust jacket. Illustrated throughout by the author. Ends gently bumped, otherwise fine. First edition, first impression, in the very scarce jacket, this a rare presentation copy inscribed, "To Sheila Macleod in friendship and gratitude! Judith Kneale". Kerr had married screenwriter Nigel Kneale in 1954, but kept her maiden name for her books. This is the first instalment in Ker's beloved Mog series. The warm inscription was likely to fellow author Sheila Macleod (b.1939), whose first novel The Moving Accident was, like Kerr's Orlando, published in 1968. Her second work, the Snow White Soliloquies, was published in the year of Mog's publication.
