With Love & Eighty Candles : for M. E. K. : Margaret Elizabeth Keynes [wife of Sir Geoffrey Keynes] 1890 -1970. To Celebrate Her 80th Birthday ... a dinner ... at her birthplace Newnham Grange, now Darwin College &c.

Rampant Lions Press 1970. . Blue-green wrappers handsomely titled in black. Large Folio [c.29 x 22cms], c.pp24 uncut, previous owner's neat little booklabel on inside of front wrapper, wrappers just slightly dulled or dusty, couple of trifling nicks, but overall an excellent copy of a large and vulnerable item.--oOo-- Edition Limited to 200 copies only : designed & printed by Will & Sebastian Carter. A rare Rampant Lions book comprising Poems & Speeches celebrating the 80th birthday of Lady Margaret Keynes. This was an exclusive celebration to which only 38 guests were invited. 'This booklet reprinted the invitaton to the birthday dinner (which we [the Rampant Lions] had originally printed) in facsimile, the menu (which we had not) and, from standing type, an acrostic sonnet by Jon Stallworthy. (We [the Rampant Lions] had already printed this poem in Arrighi-Vicenza, also for private circulation.) The lines of the sonnet begin with the letters of 'Margaret Keynes', since by good fortune the letters in each word exactly tally with the octave and sestet of the Petrachan sonnet. There is also a translation of the poem into Latin by Nicolas Barker with the acrostic duly Latinised' [Rampant Lions : A Printing Workshop]. Includes also speeches by Stephen Keynes, Christopher Cornford, John Sparrow, Richard Hume Lord Adrian, and Margaret Keynes.

        Winter Insomnia

Kayak (Santa Cruz): (Kayak). (1970). Carver's first regularly published book, a collection of poems, issued in an attractive edition of 1000 copies designed and printed by George Hitchcock and illustrated with prints by Robert McChesney. This is the issue in the rare white wrappers, the overwhelming majority having been issued in yellow wrappers. William Stull's Carver checklist said that three copies were known in the white wrappers. Since that checklist was published, we have seen three more copies in white wrappers, including this one, bringing the total number of known copies to six. Without knowing exactly how many white copies there were, we can say with assurance that this issue is exceedingly scarce; we've seen dozens, if not hundreds, of the issue in yellow wrappers. This copy is inscribed by Carver: "For Rush - with good wishes. Ray Carver. 3-3-83." Spine and edge sunning to covers; near fine. . First Edition. Softcover.

Horizontal fold, small tear at upper margin not affecting image, else fine, mounted in an archival mat . A delicious pencil drawing by Mad artist Mingo, showing Alfred, under the title "Steaming", in a two-person metal steam cabinet: beside him is a pretty girl with a startled look on her face; Alfred wears an expression of sensuous pleasure, and the viewer is left to imagine just what is going on in the confines of the cabinet. Somehow, it doesn't take much imagination. Done as a preliminary to a subsequent painting

Archive of Personal Papers and Photos

A small but interesting collection of items related to actress Vivien Merchant, the first wife of Nobel Prize-winner Harold Pinter, including an ALS from Merchant, a photograph of her from a play, and two photographs of Pinter (one an early image with their son Daniel). Overall near fine or better with some scattered wear at the corners and a splash mark to one letter. An unusual group of items which includes a hotel bill from The Albany Hotel in 1970, a Westside Health Club member card (which expired May 22, 1974), a 1971 bank statement from Midland Bank Limited, and a thank you card from Rowohlt Theater Verlag. There are also two pieces of correspondence from friends: including an ALS by British theater actress Viola Keats, who costarred in the 1974 Pinter-directed version of Next of Kin by John Hopkins; and an ALS by Merchant to Keats asking her to dinner. Of particular note are the three photographs: the first is a continuity Polaroid of Merchant in costume for an unidentified play; the second is a poignant photo of Pinter with Daniel from the early 1960s, as Pinter was gaining in popularity and long before the two became estranged; and lastly, a mounted black and white version of a photo of Pinter that appeared in color on the cover of the Saturday Review for April 8, 1967, with the stamp of celebrity photographer Anthony di Gesu on the verso, likely given to Merchant as a keepsake. An unusual and fascinating group of items.

THE EYE IN THE TRIANGLE. An Interpretation of Aleister Crowley. Inscribed

Saint Paul, Minnesota:: Llewellyn Publications, 1970 Presentation Copy. 8vo., A near fine copy in the publisher's black cloth, gilt - in a lightly used dustwrapper. Regardie has warmly inscribed this book to Ursula Greville: "For Ursula / who did some editing on this magnum opus / Love, Francis." {Regardie dedicated AHA! to Ursula Greville a 'loving, generous, devoted friend of many years who, like Aleister Crowley changed the entire course of my life.'} This is a stated First Edition / First Printing. There is some light wear to the board's extremities & to the crown and foot of the book's spine. There are three small page notations on the final free endpaper. The dustwrapper is not price clipped; with the original publisher's price of $10.00 still intact on the front flap. There is a 1" x 2" chip missing from the top right corner of the front panel and a 2" closed tear in the same area. There are several small chips missing from the crown of the DJ's spine. "Aleister Crowley has for years been reviled by the public media as 'The Most Evil Man in the World.' And he has for years been hailed by a small handful of scholars as the greatest of modern mystics, the 'Prophet of a New Aeon.' Now, The Eye in the Triangle appears to clear up some aspects of the dual mystery. In this book Israel Regardie examines the life and work of Aleister Crowley from a sympathetically objective point of view. Many of Crowley's loveliest and holiest works are quoted from sources long out of print. The Eye in the Triangle is essential to an understanding not only of Crowley but of all modern magic and occultism." -- from the book's dustwrapper. Signed by Author. 1st Edition.

Albuquerque: Loujon Press 1970. Albuquerque: Loujon Press, [1970].. Folio. Quarto spiralbound book in foil wrapper and twelve lithographed broadside reproductions of watercolors, plus frontis and special colophon/title leaf, enclosed in publisher's folding cloth clamshell box. Fine. First edition, special issue (distributed ca. 1971). This present copy is one of twenty copies specially cased and distributed as a memorial fund-raiser for the publisher. It includes a frontispiece portrait of Henry Miller by Paul Giovanopoulos not included in the regular issues (1/30 numbered and signed in pencil by the artist in the margin), along with a manuscript note by Mrs. Jon Webb, and a specially printed title leaf for the portfolio (not noted by the bibliographers, who oddly denote this a second "edition," which it is not). Although not called for, each of the plates of watercolors by Miller is signed by him in the margin (generally near the facsimile signature), in ink, rather than pencil, as was the case with the more exclusive regular issues. This rather awkward production was ill-starred from its initial conception, when an edition of 999 copies was envisioned; reality soon sunk in, and the edition was reduced to 699 copies. In the end, only three hundred of the original wood cases were completed, and some of the more lavish deluxe issues - A through F - were issued in far smaller numbers than intended. A portion of the edition was then offered as the "Economy" issue, without the wooden case, but with the reproductions. Apart from the original issue 'A' (12 copies with an original watercolor by Miller), this is the most limited of the distributed issues, and the clamshell box is far preferable to the wood slide- case (with the famous photo of Miller astride a toilet) that accompanied a portion of the other issues.
