        Slaughterhouse-Five

London: Jonathan Cape. (1970). The uncorrected proof copy of the first British edition of his masterwork, a powerful fictional memoir of his experiences during the Allied fire-bombing of Dresden, Germany. On all three major lists of the top books of the 20th century. Creased, stained, abraded; good in wrappers. Scarce: while it is not known how many copies of this proof were prepared, the bibliographers report that only 39 copies of the proof of the American edition were done, and it is reasonable to suppose that there would not have been more copies done in the U.K. than in the U.S. The last copy we handled was in 1998. . First Edition. Softcover.

Two almost imperceptible tape marks on each of the pictorial endpapers, otherwise a nice clean copy. Owner's name. Very good. ***Copies of this title are not always signed by the authors, as called for; some are with the signature of one, or the other, or neither. Evidently the publisher did not have the authors sign all copies at publication. .

        TIRESIAS.,

(Northampton, 1970). - 5 x 7. 22 leaves. Frontis bust of Tennyson signed by Baskin. Title engraved by John Howard Benson and printed from the block in red. Four other etchings (two on blue paper, one in three colors) each signed by Baskin. Bound by Arno Werner in full vellum, quarter vellum tray case. Tray case has light soil; book yawns a bit, but is fine. Although 50 copies were printed of this exquisite little book, "About half the edition was destroyed by water damage at the press in 1970." (The Work of Fifty Years 68) Printed by Harold McGrath in Centaur types on handmade Fabriano. This copy is signed by Baskin in the colophon, and is number 30. All the etchings are signed (although the bibliography does not call for that). Baskin writes "It was not Tennyson but Tiresias, the male-female archaic know-it-all that really interested me & caused the poem to be printed. I thus had the possibility of doing several small & very hirsute etchings of him, & in color the copulating snakes whose secret procreative activities he penetrated to the vast annoyance of Artemis--the cause of Tiresias' sexual change. The book is noteworthy for its title page, enhanced by a wood engraving of the title by John E. Benson."

Measures approximately 17.5" x 11". Neatly tipped-in at the corner edges into a mat frame. A fine copy. A beautifully printed poster advertisement from the Cockettes legendary series of midnight shows given at the Palace Theater in North Beach, San Francisco. A psychedelic drag queen troupe founded by Hibiscus (George Harris), the Cockettes performed outrageous parodies of show tunes, and much else.         The Pregnant Widow

Jonathan Cape, 2010. 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author. UK First Edition, First Printing. SIGNED to the title page. Description: It was summer 1970 - a long, hot summer. In a castle in Italy, half a dozen young lives are afloat on the sea of change, trapped inside the history of the sexual revolution. The girls are acting like boys, and the boys are going on acting like boys, and Keith Nearing - twenty years old, a literature student all clogged up with the English novel - is struggling to twist feminism and the rise of women towards his own ends. The sexual revolution may have been a velvet revolution (in at least two senses), but it wasn't bloodless - and now, in the twenty-first century, the year 1970 finally catches up with Keith Nearing. "The Pregnant Widow" is a comedy of manners and a nightmare, brilliant, haunting and gloriously risque.

Paris: Mercure de France, 1970. First French Edition, preceding all others. & & Warmly INSCRIBED by Truffaut to French cinema historian and writer Maurice Bessy on the half-title page. The Doinel character, realized onscreen over a number of years by Jean-Pierre Leaud, was Truffaut's autobiographical double, and the films compiled here begin in Doinel's childhood with "The 400 Blows" (1959) and continue through adolescence and early manhood with "Antoine and Colette" (1962), "Stolen Kisses" (1968), and "Bed and Board" (1970). Quite uncommon in dust jacket, and a wonderful association with Bessy, a major figure in French and world cinema of the 1950s and 1960s.& & Near Fine in card wrappers in a Near Fine dust jacket.

[Playscript]: The Great Gatsby: A Musical Adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald Novel

New York: Artie Shaw Presents. 1970. First. Playscript. Quarto. Bradbound in embossed black Studio Duplicating Service wrappers. A bit of edgewear, but near fine. Numbered in pencil as copy number 4. Agent's (CAA) card with the name "D. Hickman" (presumably Dwayne Hickman) laid in. As near as we can tell, never produced. Relatively early in the career of two-time Tony Award winner Wheeler -- he had only three plays produced on Broadway up until that time. Presumably very scarce.         Cruising (Signed First Edition, review copy)

New York: Stein and Day, 1970. First Edition. First Edition. REVIEW COPY, with publisher's slip, author's glossy review photo, and publisher letter laid in. This copy is also humorously INSCRIBED by the author in the year of publication to noted bibliophile Burt Britton: "Sept. 5, 1970 / For Burt Britton - / Who swears he'll never turn me in to IRS (and whom I will not turn in to Doubleday). / Regards, / Gerry Walker." Britton published a book a few years later, titled, "Self-Portrait: Book People Picture Themselves," which contained hundreds of self-caricatures of authors he had collected over the years. Walker was the editor of The New York Times Magazine beginning in 1963, and this was his only novel, a brutal view into the lives of gay male culture in the 1970s (set almost entirely in Manhattan gay bars of the late 1960s), and its relationship to crime and police brutality. Basis for the 1980 film, directed by William Friedkin and starring Al Pacino, Paul Sorvino and Karen Allen. Fine and unread in a Fine dust jacket. Scarce in this condition and rare with any kind of association.

John Cage (First Edition, inscribed to Ellsworth Snyder in 1971)

New York: Praeger, 1970. First Edition. First Edition. INSCRIBED by Cage in 1971 to Ellsworth Snyder: "for Ellsworth Snyder, / with admiration and friendship / John Cage, Madison '71." & & Ellsworth Snyder and Cage were longtime friends. Snyder performed the composer's work on many occasions, perhaps most infamously at Cage's much-protested 1965 appearance at the University of Illinois: "At one point [Snyder] crawled under the piano, made a show of carefully marking a precise point on the under-body of the instrument with a tape measure, then hit that spot with a mallet. Even more provocative for that particular audience, he had planted a loose piano string in the instrument, and after striking an unusually percussive chord he slowly pulled the ostensibly broken string out of the piano. By this time the audience was screaming and throwing objects at the stage." (Johanne Rivest, In Advance of the Avant Garde: John Cage at the University of Illinois, 1952-69,1999). & & Snyder contributes to this volume the essay, "Chronological Table of John Cage's Life." Additionally, he is particularly thanked by editor Kostelanetz for his help in assembling the bibliographic sections at the end of the book. One of the earliest books to consider all aspects of Cage's career as writer, performer, artist, composer. A superb association.& & Fine in a Near Fine dust jacket.
