Center contained a wide range of fiction and other prose, including considerable avant-garde dance and art criticism. Berge’s editorial philosophy was influenced by John Cage’s theories developed in his class on new music at the New School, by Jackson MacLow’s performance pieces at the Judson Memorial Church, and by Berge’s own work with the Fluxus Group. The first issue set the tone as Berge invited friends to send her non-form prose from known writers. Center then became a forum for writers whose avant-garde ideas have become part of the tradition of literature.

Scarce: while it is not known how many copies of this proof were prepared, the bibliographers report that only 39 copies of the proof of the American edition were done, and it is reasonable to suppose that there would not have been more copies done in the U.K. than in the U.S. The last copy we handled was in 1998. .         The Empire Trilogy [Comprising Troubles/The Siege of Krishnapur/The Singapore Grip] First UK Editions 1970-1978

A set of first edition, first printings published by Jonathan Cape and Weidenfeld and Nicolson between 1970 and 1978. All three novels by Farrell, constituting The Empire Trilogy, are generally considered only to be connected thematically, although the character of Archer, who appears in 'Troubles', makes an appearance in 'The Singapore Grip' also. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first time all three first editions have been presented as a set. 'Troubles', published by Jonathan Cape in 1970, is a near fine book with the red top stain still present ? the book is without inscriptions. In a very good+ wrapper which is unclipped (45s/£2.25 as called for) with some wear to the spine ends and rubbing to the edges and corners. Superb dust wrapper illustration by Bill Botten. The Siege of Krishnapur, published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson in 1973 (winner of the Booker Prize of that year) is a very good book with one name to the ffep in a very good (internally reinforced) wrapper which is clipped and has some wear in places as well as a neatly repaired closed tear to the foot of the front panel. The Singapore Grip, published by Weidenfeld and Nicolson in 1978, is a near fine book without inscriptions in a very good+ wrapper which is not price clipped and has some fading to the spine as well as some wear to corners and extremities. Since 'Troubles' was announced as the winner of the Lost Booker Prize of 1970, interest in Farrell?s work has risen dramatically. The trilogy exists as his legacy and displays his superb writing talent so tragically cut short in August 1979.

        The Boo

McClure Press, 1970-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Signed. Verona, VA: McClurge Press, 1970. First Edition, First Printing of the true first edition. In original dust jacket with price of $4.50 in tact. Signed by Pat Conroy on the front free end paper, with an inscription to the original owner reading "To Binks, who wears the Ring." The ring Conroy is referring to here is the ring worn by Citadel graduates; Citadel is the setting of this book. Above Conroy's inscription, is a gift inscription in pen to the original owner, from his father. The book and jacket are in Good+ condition. Clean pages, sound binding. Offsetting to paste down and end papers. Light foxing to side of page block. Light lean to spine. Light edge wear and rubbing to cloth. The spine shows a small area with a few tiny indents, which corresponds to an area of similar damage on the spine of the jacket as well. There is a storage odor, which seems mostly to be coming from the jacket, and only faintly from the book itself. The dust jacket shows some rubbing, chipping and edge wear, with a few short tears and light creasing. Fewer than 2,000 copies were originally printing. Rare, signed.
