Support Gay Power: Bring Out A Cop - Original Artwork

Nefarious Ark Studio N.D. but circa early 1970's, New York - Original artwork by Tony Eikenbary created for Gay Power, New York's first gay newspaper. The piece features the Gay Power logo priminently in the lower left corner, but it is unclear to us whether the artwork was done as part of a campaign or for a newspaper cover. Issues of Gay Power are scarce in commerce, with sporadic institutional holdings. A terrific piece featuring a devilishly handsome police officer sporting a pretty serious bulge, and the only original artwork we have seen related to this seminal gay publication. Single sheet of heavy artist board (35.5 X 55.5cm), offwhite, with artwork rendered in pen, ink, and permanent marker; small accents and one correction in white paint; a few light creases, with some offset at center of image, likely from fixative sprayed on verso. Signed by the artist on the verso, with his New York City address written in ink directly below.

A Journey from London to Genoa

FONT>1970 - Sussex - Centaur Press. FONT>1970 - Sussex - Centaur Press, 1970 Book. Very Good. Hardcover. Black hardback with gitl titles to spine. In orange, black and white dust jacket. This is a facsimile reprint of the second edition of Baretti's work from 1770. Complete in two volumes bound as one and illustrated with portrait frontispiece. Giuseppe Marc'Antonio Baretti (April 24, 1719 - May 5, 1789) was an Italian literary critic born at Turin. He was intended by his father for the profession of law, but at the age of sixteen fled from Turin and went to Guastalla, where he was for some time employed in a mercantile house. His leisure hours he devoted to literature and criticism, in which he became an expert. For many years he led a wandering life, supporting himself chiefly by his writings. At length he arrived in London, where he remained for a considerable time. He obtained an appointment as secretary to the Royal Academy of Painting, and became acquainted with Samuel Johnson, Garrick and others of that society. He was a frequent visitor at the Thrales, and his name occurs repeatedly in Boswell's Life. In 1769 he was tried for murder, having had the misfortune to inflict a mortal wound with his fruit knife on a man who had assaulted him on the street. Johnson among others gave evidence in his favour at the trial, which resulted in Baretti's acquittal. He died in May 1789. His first work of any importance was the Italian Library (1757), a useful catalogue of the lives and works of many Italian authors. The Lettere famigliari, giving an account of his travels through Spain, Portugal and France during the years 1761-1765, were well received, and when afterwards published in English (4 vols. , 1770), were highly commended by Johnson. Condition: The binding is tight and firm and both covers are firmly attached. There is very little wear to the extremities. The dust jacket is in very good condition apart from some sunning to the spine and some mild wear to the edges. It has been price cliped. Internally the book is generally clean an dbright with no obvious marks. There is a printed address label to the top of the front pastedown..

Triple-signed Hotel Registration Card one week before his death

Colebrook, England, 1970. Colebrook, England, 1970. unbound. Exceedingly rare partly printed document signed -- a hotel registration card, measuring 3.75 x 5.75 inches, Colebrook, England, May 26, 1970. Filled out and signed three times, completely in his hand: "Bruce L. McLaren, McLaren Racing. 5 David Road, Doyle Trading Estate - Colebrook, England." McLaren also penned a gorgeous script signature on the Guest Line. The bottom of the card, which is in the clerk's hand, indicates that McLaren was supposed to depart the Hotel on the 30th of May. History, however, suggests he did not leave until June 2, 1970. Five days later, McLaren was killed when his Can-Am car crashed on the Lavant Straight before Woodcote Corner at Goodwind Circuit in England. He had been testing his new M8D when the rear body came adrift at speed. The loss of Aerodynamic down force destabilized the car, which spun, left the track and hit a bunker used as a flag station. Though the clerk's departure date remains a mystery, we do know that this signed hotel card confirms his arrival on May 26, 1970 (9:25pm) and that he arrived in England on that day to prepare himself for the June 2nd race. Fine condition. Race car designer, Grand Prix Formula One race car champion, engineer, and inventor who founded the McLaren racing team. He died at age 32 while testing a prototype car in England. An exceptional and sad item that directly links one of the greatest race car drivers with his destiny.

ONE HUNDRED YEARS OF SOLITUDE - REVIEW COPY, WITH TLS FROM PUBLISHER LAID IN

Harper & Row, Publishers, New York 1970 - First Printing, one of 7,500 copies. Octavo; hunter green cloth, with titles stamped in gilt on spine; variant with headband in olive green and yellow (no established priority); dustjacket; [xiii], 422pp, [1 blank]. Faint foxing to top edge, else Fine. Dustjacket is the so-called second state, with a "." instead of an excalamation mark at the end of the first paragraph on the front flap; price is unclipped, with some minor wear at spine ends, and a few very tiny nicks and tears to extremities; bright, very Near Fine example. A superlative copy of the Nobel Prize winner's masterpiece, and likely the most widely-read Spanish language novel aside from 'Don Quixote.' The present example is a review copy, with the publisher's typed slip laid in; the slip differs from other Harper & Row review slips from the same period, in that in states "IMPORTANT: please note that this is UNCORRECTED PROOF." Also laid into this copy is a brief, one page typed letter from Harper & Row publisher Cass Canfield, Jr. to Dr. Howard B. Gotlieb, former Director of Special Collections at Boston University. The letter is dated 21 October, 1969 - some four months prior to publication of the book - and mentions the enclosure of an advance proof of 'One Hundred Years of Solitude.' It isn't lost on us that the copy these materials came to us in is not an uncorrected proof (of which we presently know of exactly 2 copies). We can only surmise that these proof materials were placed into this copy of the book in-house; Canfield, whose business card is also laid into the book, may have decided that Gotlieb should receive a hardbound copy and not a paperbound proof, and thus would have placed the materials in one of the first hard copies manufactured. Evidence supporting copies in dustjacket with the "." on the front flap being printed prior to publication is discussed at length in Don Klein's 'Gabriel García Márquez: Una Bibliografía Descriptiva, Tomo II.' In it, Klein mentions that two editorial heads at Harper & Row received review copies directly from the printer, both in jackets ending in "." Additionally, the review copy received by translator Gregory Rabassa bore a jacket also ending in a "." and not the exclamation mark (p.635-636). And while we are fully cognisant that review materials often migrate from copy-to-copy within the trade, sufficient evidence is present that the migration here was more than likely the publisher's doing. The only such copy we have handled, the only other known to us being the bibliographer's copy. Klein E2.a.1. [Attributes: First Edition]

        ROSUL NEGORI

Couples (includes "Couple and One", "Nereid and Poseidon", "Wakening", "Hammock", "Hands at Rest", and "Centaur")

New York: Associated American Artists, 1969-1970 - A COMPLETE DELUXE SET, IN FINE CONDITION. This is a charming suite of six color lithographs (Cole 61-66), many playfully erotic, each justified and signed in pencil by Hirsch. From a total edition of 145 suites, all printed on fine BFK Rives paper, this is ONE OF FIVE HORS-COMMERCE SETS WITH AN ADDITIONAL SET OF THE LITHOGRAPHS PRINTED IN BLACK, ALSO JUSTIFIED AND SIGNED IN PENCIL BY HIRSCH. Additionally signed by Hirsch on the limitation page. This is furthermore an outstanding association copy, WITH A SIGNED PRESENTATION INSCRIPTION FROM HIRSCH TO "LILYAN AND SYLVAN". Sylvan Cole (1918-2005) was the most important dealer in American prints of his (or any) generation, and as the director of Associated American Artists published thousands of prints, including this suite. He also compiled several catalogues raisonnes, including the one of Hirsch's prints. "Lilyan" was Cole's second wife. Since each of the prints is signed, virtually all copies of this suite have been broken up. This copy is complete because it remained in Cole's private collection from the time Hirsch presented it to him until Cole died. Large folio. FINE AND BRIGHT WITH NO DEFECTS. In the original (very slightly worn) cloth folding case. A unique, important, and impressive item. IMPORTANT NOTE: During March, 2006, hundreds of prints represented as being from "the Sylvan Cole collection" were sold at public auction. In fact, ALL of these items were from his leftover gallery inventory, not his private collection. As far as I know, the few items I offer from Sylvan's collection are the ONLY items anywhere on the market which are actually from his private collection (which he kept in his apartment, not his gallery). I acquired them all directly from Sylvan (my uncle), mainly in spring, 2005. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Stephen Hickman: early original illustration, Musketeer,1970

no publisher 1970 - Stephen Hickman, 1970. Original illustration, by some accounts prior to the start of his professional career. Image area 11" x 8 3/4". Black matted at 14 3/4" x 12 1/4". Pen and ink on illustration board; Fine condition. Annotations on the back, including the remark "inside front", have the look of a layout editor's comments, indicating possible publication somewhere, though his for-pay career as an artist, by conventional record, started in 1972 when he began to illustrate for T-shirts in Maryland - and then went on to become one of the great sci-fi and fantasy artists of the past three decades. Provenance contact provided to purchaser. This is a picture of a Musketeer in mid-combat, thrusting his sword outward at the viewer (see scan), as might have been done for a men's adventure magazine. Whether he was amateur or professional at the time - a piece of collectible interest. L-lng2 [Attributes: Soft Cover]

[Screenplay and Photo Archive for:] THE FRENCH CONNECTION

[New York: D'Antoni Productions], 6 October [revised 21 October & 28 October] 1970. [New York: D'Antoni Productions], 6 October [revised 21 October & 28 October] 1970. Two volumes: [1],93 leaves; [1],93 leaves plus lettered inserts. Quarto. Mimeographed typescript, printed on rectos only, the second shot through with revised leaves on salmon stock. Bradbound in printed production wrappers. Ownership signature in each and ink inscriptions in 2nd (see below), wrappers a bit frayed and torn at overlap edges, internally very good or better. Accompanied by a file of associated photographs and other material, as noted below. Two unspecified "revised" pre-production drafts of Tidyman's multi-award winning screenplay, adapted in part from the 1969 book by Robin Moore. The October 1971 release was directed by William Friedkin, and starred Gene Hackman, Fernando Rey, Roy Scheider, Tony Lo Bianco, Sonny Grasso, et al. As part of a five Oscar sweep, Tidyman won for his screenplay, Hackman won as Best Actor, Friedkin won as Best Director, and the film won Best Picture. BAFTA, Golden Globes and WGA awards piled up, and in 2005 it was inducted into the National Film Registry. Each of these scripts bears the ownership signature of Randy Jurgensen, who in addition to acting as production assistant and liaison with the NYPD during the New York production, portrayed a police sergeant in the film. Jurgensen has had a long and distinguished career, both as a NYPD Officer (1958-78), and as consultant to, and actor in, a substantial list of film and television productions, including association with a number of films by William Friedkin, of which this was the first, as well as other major films, such as THE GODFATHER, wherein he played the gunman who administered the coup de grace to Sonny Corleone. The second, revised script also bears signed later inscriptions from Sonny Grasso and "Billy" [Friedkin], the latter: "To Randy, with love, Billy 5/1/13." Jurgensen is the featured interviewee in a documentary about the film's production accompanying recent SD dvd and Hi-Def releases of the film. The two scripts are accompanied by a file of 39 8 x 10" production stills (not publicity stills) the considerable majority of which are of sequences in which Jurgensen had a role and one of which is signed by him, plus one of him on stage with Friedkin and a larger group of people at a law enforcement award ceremony related to the film. Also present is a sequence of nineteen 5 3/4 x 4" color prints of photographs of later vintage by Jurgensen of the sites featured as locations in NYC for filming, compiled as a guide for the locations in the later interview noted above for the Blu Ray release. Also present are some related items, such as his retained carbon of his employment agreement for the production, a check stub for residuals after the film was released to television, and some ephemeral items related to screenings and honors for the film and players. In sum, an excellent lot of material, with iron clad provenance, for one of the major film achievements of its generation and genre.

MARDI GRAS IN NEW ORLEANS: A Photographic Essay. Foreword by David Mynders Symthe.

Privately Printed: Self-published 1970 - First edition, first printing. Original photo-illustrated stapled wrappers. An excellent near fine copy with only light rubbing to the binding extremities. Clean and bright throughout. A superb and little known photographic work capturing the crowds at the New Orleans Mardi Gras. The photographer ignores the floats and parade, instead aiming his lens on the spectators, capturing the real spirit of this festival as well as providing a remarkable, if not unique documentation of the inhabitants of one of America's most glittering cities. Unaccountably scarce. OCLC records just one copy of this edition at the University of New Orleans and a copy of a 1972 edition at Michigan State University Libraries.
