One (First Edition with Dust Jacket)

Tokyo: Tsukiji Shoka, 1970. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Soft cover. Near Fine/Near Fine. This is a first edition, first printing of Ken Ohara\'s critically acclaimed photobook \"One\" published by Tsukiji Shoka, Tokyo in 1970. Ohara emigrated to the U.S. as a young man and was an apprentice to both Richard Avedon and Hiro. \"One\" is a compendium of 500 faces which were chosen randomly in the streets and parks of New York and photographed in identical, tightly framed compositions. Each of the portraits were printed in the same tonal range and presented in full-page bleeds without any identifying text. Measuring approximately 10.5 x 9 inches, the book is bound in stiff photographically illustrated wrappers with the very rare photographically illustrated dust jacket. The book is in Near FINE condition with the inevitable darkening of the page ends that is common to this title and very minor wear to the wraps. The dust jacket is in Near FINE condition with a bit of edge wear to the extremities and corners with the head of the spine area of the jacket showing some minor creasing and a very minor tear. Cited in \"The Open Book\" by Andrew Roth and \"The Photobook: A History\" by Parr & Badger. In 1974 his work was included in the landmark \"New Japanese Photography\" exhibition at the Museum of Modern Art, New York.

        Papillon (Inscribed first edition)

New York: William Morrow and Company, 1970. First American edition. Near Fine/Very Good +. A lovely, very nearly Fine copy of the book with a faint smoky odor and top edge a trifle dusty. In a Very Good + to Near Fine dust jacket which is gently toned and with minor wear at the extremities. Inscribed by the author "Chance Papillon 10-16-70" in blue marker on the half-title. There are other copies inscribed on the same date, within a few weeks of the Oct. 1st publication date, likely at a publicity event or reading. & & Henri Charriere's thrilling account of his imprisonment and escape from Devil's Island, a French penal colony off the coast of French Guiana. Though there is significant debate over the book's accuracy - and whether Charriere was indeed imprisoned unjustly - the book achieved great popularity when it was released, both in French and English. Of course, it would later be adapted into the famed 1972 film starring Steve McQueen and Dustin Hoffman, now considered to be a classic - and one of McQueen's best roles. "Papillon was the literary wonder of the 1969 publishing season in France, a runaway best-seller which shot a sixty-year-old ex-convict, Henri Charrière, to fame and fortune and even turned him into a public personality... I read the book when it first came out and enjoyed it enormously as a first-class adventure story and another fascinating example of the picaresque." (Contemporary Review from The New York Review of Books). Near Fine in Very Good +. dust jacket.

        This Is Greece: The Islands

Bruno Cassirer Nd, Oxford - Small 8vo, pp. 96. Original illustrated card wrappers. Slight scuff to head of spine, otherwise a near fine copy. Later, softbound edition. JOSEPH LOSEY'S COPY, SIGNED, AND MARKED UP BY HIM WHILST ON A LOCATION RECCE. Given the vintage of this little travel guide, it seems likely that Losey used it while scouting locations for his 1970 film Figures In A Landscape (which was eventually shot in Spain). The book has many underlinings, presumably by Losey, and a number of pages have been folded over at the corners.

        One Hundred Years of Solitude

New York: Harper & Row, 1970. First American edition of the author's magnum opus. Octavo, original green cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. Inscribed and dated with a drawing of a flower by Gabriel Garcia Marquez on the dedication page, per his custom. Also signed by the translator Gregory Rabassa, who has transcribed the last line as follows, "Because races condemned to one hundred years of solitude did not have a second opportunity on earth Gregory Rabassa." Fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket with only light wear to the extremities. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional copy of this landmark novel, seldom found inscribed. One Hundred Years of Solitude chronicles the life of Macondo, a fictional town based in part of Garcia Marquez's hometown of Aracataca, Columbia, and seven generations of the founding family, the Buendias. He creates a complex world with characters and events that display the full range of human experience. For the reader, the pleasure of the novel derives from its fast-paced narrative, humor, vivid characters, and fantasy elements. In this 'magic realism', the author combines imaginative flights of fancy with social realism to give us images of levitating priests, flying carpets, a four-year-long rainstorm, and a young woman ascending to heaven while folding sheets" (NYPL Books of the Century 31).

CAMPO URBANO. INTERVENTI ESTETICI NELLA DIMENSIONE COLLETTIVA URBANA. COMO - 21 SETTEMBRE 1969. A cura di Luciano Caramel - Ugo Mulas - Bruno Munari.

Cesare Nani s.d. . Fra gli artisti presenti: Enrico Baj, Davide Boriani, Giuseppe Chiari, Gianni Colombo, Luciano Fabro, Ugo La Pietra, Attilio Marcolli, Livio Marzot, Bruno Munari, Giulio Paolini, Ico Parisi, Franca Sacchi, Gianni Emilio Simonetti, Tommaso Trini. Typed Letter Signed concerning censorship and manipulation of broadcast television

Boston 1970 - American cartoonist and humorist best known for the satirical comic strip "Li'L Abner." 2 pages on "Li'L Abner" stationery, 8 x 8.5 inches, April 20, 1970 [written on envelope]. In this letter, Capp responds to a young lady who has written to columnist Harry Harris, a friend of Capp's from the "Philadelphia Inquirer," in part: ".I read your letter to Harry Harris in which you sympathized with me for playing 'Daniel' to a 'lion's den' of nasty students on the Educational program 'The Show'.They had been instructed, they said, by the bearded and beaded producers of 'The Show' to - 'kick the hell out of Al Capp'. And your sympathy should go to those people whose contributions to 'Educational' TV support it, in the honest hope they are supporting honest journalism. They were short changed. Many of the responses you heard from me on the version you saw were not mine, in any honest journalistic sense. They were mutilated (phrases omitted, endings omitted, transposed and re-arranged) and then glued together, out of context, in the fashion made famous by the late Senator Joe McCarthy. The ending you saw was not the original ending.it was hastily substituted without our knowledge for the true ending. My reply and final summing up was cut out, and so was the response to it.As for myself, I consider anyone who alters my opinions no better than anyone who alters my signature. But it is comforting to know, isn't it, Julie, that program-rigging, which was cleaned out of commercial TV years ago, is alive and well, and working in 'Educational' television in Hershey, Pa." Horizontal folds; several handwritten corrections; paperclip impression at the top of the second page. Very good condition.

McClure Press, 1970-01-01. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. Signed. Verona, VA: McClurge Press, 1970. First Edition, First Printing of the true first edition. In original dust jacket with price of $4.50 in tact. Signed by Pat Conroy on the front free end paper, with an inscription to the original owner reading "To Binks, who wears the Ring." The ring Conroy is referring to here is the ring worn by Citadel graduates; Citadel is the setting of this book. Above Conroy's inscription, is a gift inscription in pen to the original owner, from his father. The book and jacket are in Good+ condition. Clean pages, sound binding. Offsetting to paste down and end papers. Light foxing to side of page block. Light lean to spine. Light edge wear and rubbing to cloth. The spine shows a small area with a few tiny indents, which corresponds to an area of similar damage on the spine of the jacket as well. There is a storage odor, which seems mostly to be coming from the jacket, and only faintly from the book itself. The dust jacket shows some rubbing, chipping and edge wear, with a few short tears and light creasing. Fewer than 2,000 copies were originally printing. Rare, signed.

        One Hundred Years of Solitude

Harper & Row, 1970-03-25. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good. New York: Harper & Row, 1970: A first edition, first printing in a first state dust jacket. Statement of "First Edition" on copyright page, with no further printings mentioned. The last page lacks a number line, making this a first printing. In original, beautifully illustrated first state dust jacket with "Latin America!" (as opposed to "Latin America." found in later states) on the front flap. While price clipped, the jacket still bears the proper date code of "0270" and remains identifiable as a first issue jacket due to the exclamation mark instead of the period. First issue jackets are increasingly hard to come by. The book is in very good condition in a very good dust jacket. The book has clean pages, and sound binding. The gilt lettering to the cloth remains strong. The cloth shows edge wear at the spine and corners. The dust jacket shows chipping and loss to the corners, as well as some edge wear with surface creasing. The jacket shows rubbing at the folds and is a bit fragile.. The dust jacket is now housed in a removable protective plastic sleeve and presents well.
