The Coming of the Kings,

London: Faber & Faber,, 1970. and Other Plays. Octavo. Original blue boards, titles gilt to spine. With the dust jacket. Light fading along top and bottom edge of boards. An excellent copy in the jacket. First edition, first impression. Inscribed by the author to his friend Nick Gammage on the title page, "Ted Hughes, For Nick, Greetings and best wishes, Ted, 25 Nov. 93". Gammage and Hughes's correspondence began when Gammage, then a 19 year-old student and fan, wrote to the poet for help on his dissertation. For twenty years Hughes used to write exhaustive letters to him, in which he expressed much of his thinking on literature and on life - in Gammage's words, his letters "were like triggers, as though he was using the letters to explore his thinking about his writing. He would often start by saying, 'Your question is impossible to answer', and then for six pages give the most brilliant answers." After the poet's death, Gammage published The Epic Poise: A Celebration of Ted Hughes (Faber 1999). Scarce signed.

Little, Brown (1970)., Boston: - First edition. From the collection of Adeline Lubell-Naiman. INSCRIBED "To Adeline / Impatient as always to know what she will think of the latest. Love / Norman / Nov 1970." Mailer on "the science of space" - he managed to write about many things in his career with surprising clarity. Page fore edges foxed, otherwise very good in slightly rubbed dust jacket. Adeline Lubell-Naiman was the editor instrumental in the eventual publication of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD. In 1946, while an editor at Little, Brown, Lubell-Naiman convinced Mailer to submit the first 200 pages of THE NAKED AND THE DEAD, which she talked up to her publisher. Unfortunately, she was also the one to suggest historian and critic Bernard DeVoto read the manuscript--he recommended not publishing. But Mailer submitted it to Rinehart, who published the book in 1948. Over the years, Lubell-Naiman remained close friends with Mailer and his wives. In the summer of 1968 she even played the role of "Adeline McCarthy," a president of a women's college in Mailer's film "Maidstone" (Harry Ransom Humanities Research Center website). A stunning copy, and particularly scarce in the suppressed dustjacket. First Printing. Octavo (21.5cm); navy blue cloth with titles stamped in silver on spine; red topstain; dustjacket; 131pp. Signed on the first blank both as Ann Fettamen and Anita Hoffman, and dated Los Angeles 9/18/91. Fine in a lovely example of the original suppressed dustjacket, featuring the nude Hoffman's embracing in Nixon and pig masks. Dustjacket is unclipped with some trivial rubbing, else very Near Fine. (SMITHSON, ROBERT). Smithson, Robert. TORN PHOTOGRAPH FROM THE SECOND STOP (RUBBLE). SECOND MOUNTAIN OF 6 STOPS ON A SECTION.. New York: Multiples, Inc., 1970. First Edition. 4to. Loose Sheets in Envelope. Artist's Multiple. Fine. One 21 1/2 x 21 1/2" sheet printed color offset recto and verso, torn to make four roughly 10 3/4 x 10 3/4" individual sheets, as issued. "Torn photograph from the second stop (rubble). Second mountain of 6 stops in a section" was Robert Smithson's artist's multiple contribution to the "Artists and Photographs" portfolio published by Multiples Inc. in 1970. It reproduces a color photograph by the renowned late Conceptual / Land artist of a debris strewn patch of ground that Smithson then tore in half twice to create a variable, minimalist grid. Since the piece was altered in this fashion by hand, each multiple is unique with no two having exactly identical dimensions. A bright, most handsome example of this uncommon item in the publisher's ever so slightly age-toned and nicked glassine envelope, offered here individually. Ford concept

      c. 1970. Gouache on composition board. Signed, "Dom Pacitti". 16 1/2 x 24 3/4 inches (visible). Framed. 25 1/4 x 31 1/4 inches. Striking controntation with an early 70's Ford grille This is a dramatic, confrontational drawing by Dom Pacitti of the type of hidden headlight grille popular in the early 70's. Though the idea of concealing headlights had been around since before World War II, it only became popular in the mid-60's at the same time intricate chrome grilles were catching on. Here against a dark brown background, the proposed Ford (XL?) swerves to avoid hitting the viewer (seated on a curb) showing its bright new bumper, grille and right front fender as well as a glimpse of the right side. The diagonal positioning allows the artist to maximize the dramatic display of beauty and agility.

        Pintails on a Hazy Day

London: Published by Arthur Ackermann & Son Ltd., 3, Old Bond Street, March 1970. Coloured offset-lithograph. Signed in pencil by the artist (lower right just beneath the image). Pencil and watercolour remarque of a pintail in lower left corner. In pristine condition. Image size: 14 x 21 inches. Light wood frame with blue wash-line mount. Frame size: 22 11/16 x 29 5/8 x 7/8 inches. A lovely signed and remarqued print from the one of the greatest bird artists of the 20th-century. A tranquil scene of pintails in mid-flight over a still pool. Sir Peter Scott was best known in later life for his work as a founding member and chairman of the World Wildlife Fund, but in "the period before and after the war, Peter Scott became undoubtedly the most popular artist in the United Kingdom" (J. Ford Ackermann 1783-1983 1983, p.202). The son of the Antarctic explorer Captain Robert Falcon Scott, Sir Peter initially turned to wildlife art as an extension of his early love of wildfowling. He traveled the world, hunting and painting rare birds. He held his first one-man exhibition at Ackermann's in 1933, and from the late 1930s onwards became increasingly concerned with conserving wildfowl rather than hunting them. From 1946, in tandem with a series of highly successful shows at Ackermann's, Sir Peter founded and ran the Wildfowl Trust which has gone on to become a major force in the conservation of endangered duck and geese. From 1935 up until about 1983 Ackermann's published a limited number of colour prints of Sir Peter's work. Many of the original oils are in major private and public collections, and these prints, signed by the artist himself, offer a rare chance to own an image by one of the greatest bird artists of the 20th century.

Letter. Some wrinkling and creasing, still Very Good. Superb content. SIGNED and dated as "10," his intimate signature. To Danny [Stirrup], an old friend in Key West who had worked on Williams's house there, in full: "I waited as long as I could for some word from you about the erection of the Jane Bowles Summer-house which I want to sit and meditate for a while in before I leave for my summer abroad from which I may not return like a swallow of Capistrano. And so last night, not having up till that point, heard any word from you, asked Fontis to put it up with a good carpenter and a very simple little Gothic, not Byzantine, design that we'd drawn at a bar-table. He will start on it Monday and the top estimate is $1700. which is below the amount that an experienced architect would or should accept but all I wish to expend on the project as it will serve only as room for bridge- playing and for solitary reflecting upon the madness of the world. I have not talked to anyone but you about the cause of the interruption in our long friendship. But now I will. It can be said very simply. I returned from the mad-house hungry for a tiny bit of affection, tenderness, sympathy, understanding, none of which were offered and they were as necessary to me as the air I breathe. Then, being a tiger, I turned, for tigers will turn on mortal adversaries at last. That's it and that's all. Forget me, Don Quixote, if you choose to, or remember me as a loyal and patient friend to those who are friends and I still believe you are one. The best of luck with your important project in Palm Beach. Love, 10.
