        In the Night Kitchen

New York: Harper & Row, 1970. First edition. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper. Near fine in a very good first issue dust jacket with the correct code. The Caledecott medal is adhered to the front panel. A nice copy, rather uncommon signed.Having received nine awards, The Night Kitchen's popularity is evident, but so is its controversy. When three-year-old protagonist Mickey enters the Night Kitchen, he loses his pajamas and is fully naked in some parts of the story. Some critics have objected to Mickey's nudity, which is fully depicted, and others have interpreted sexual innuendo in the proceeding events. Consequently, the book's release in the United States sparked debate, with the inclusion of child nudity frequently noted as morally problematic. The book has been ranked 25th place on the "100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000" list by the American Library Association.

Scarce: while it is not known how many copies of this proof were prepared, the bibliographers report that only 39 copies of the proof of the American edition were done, and it is reasonable to suppose that there would not have been more copies done in the U.K. than in the U.S. The last copy we handled was in 1998. .         The Pregnant Widow

Jonathan Cape, 2010. 1st. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. Signed by Author. UK First Edition, First Printing. SIGNED to the title page. Description: It was summer 1970 - a long, hot summer. In a castle in Italy, half a dozen young lives are afloat on the sea of change, trapped inside the history of the sexual revolution. The girls are acting like boys, and the boys are going on acting like boys, and Keith Nearing - twenty years old, a literature student all clogged up with the English novel - is struggling to twist feminism and the rise of women towards his own ends. The sexual revolution may have been a velvet revolution (in at least two senses), but it wasn't bloodless - and now, in the twenty-first century, the year 1970 finally catches up with Keith Nearing. "The Pregnant Widow" is a comedy of manners and a nightmare, brilliant, haunting and gloriously risque.
