Rotation of the Andromeda Nebula from a Spectroscopic Survey of Emission Regions" in Astrophysical Journal 159, No. 2, Part 1, pp. 379-405

Chicago University of Chicago Press 1970 - Perfect bound. Original white wrappers printed in black. Housed in a custom quarter brown morocco folding case. Ownership signature "Tammann" on the cover. Professionally rebacked to style, slightly toned and rubbed at the edges but overall very fresh. An excellent copy. First edition, in the original wrappers, of Rubin's key paper presenting the first observational evidence for the existence of dark matter. This copy with the ownership signature "Tammann" on the upper cover, likely the Swiss astronomer Gustav Andreas Tammann, director of the Astronomical Institute of the University of Basel and recipient of the Albert Einstein Medal. Vera Rubin was the daughter of an engineer who fostered her love of science, particularly astronomy, from an early age. She became the only astronomy graduate at Vasser in 1948 and, after discovering that her first choice of Princeton did not accept female graduate students, she earned her Master's at Cornell and doctorate at Georgetown. Rubin was particularly interested in the rotation of galaxies, which she had researched under the pioneering female astronomer Margaret Burbidge in 1963. At the time, galactic rotation had not properly been measured, but it was expected that the same law of motion that governs the movement of bodies in the solar system would apply to the stars in galaxies. As Newton had shown, the speed of rotation of the stars should drop in proportion to the square root of their distance from the centre. But when Rubin and her collaborator Kent Ford measured star speeds in the Andromeda Galaxy they discovered, to their surprise, that the stars at the edges of the galaxy rotated at the same speed, or slightly faster than, those closer to the centre. This violated the laws of both Newton and Einstein, and implied that the galaxies should have been fraying at the edges as stars were hurled into the void. The only explanation for this result was that some additional mass was holding the galaxies together. The concept of dark matter had first been proposed by astronomers Fritz Zwicky and Jan Oort in the 1930s, but was largely ignored. And because no one had predicted its effects on galaxies, Rubin didn't initially recognise its relevance to their situation. But as she explained in an interview with psychologist and author Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, "Months were taken up in trying to understand what I was looking at One day I just decided that I had to understand what this complexity was that I was looking at and I made sketches on a piece of paper and suddenly I understood it all. I have no other way of describing it. It was exquisitely clear. I don't know why I hadn't done this two years earlier." What Rubin realised was that if the outer edges of the galaxy contained a halo of dark matter, the additional mass would hold these quickly rotating stars in place. Within a few years, other astronomers had constructed a theoretical framework for our understanding of dark matter, and we now have multiple ways to observe its effects on galaxies. The discovery of this mysterious form of matter has had a profound impact on our understanding of everything from the movement of stars to the very life and death of the universe itself. As astronomer Emily Levasque of the University of Washington at Seattle put it, "The existence of dark matter has utterly revolutionized our concept of the universe and our entire field; the ongoing effort to understand the role of dark matter has basically spawned entire subfields within astrophysics and particle physics at this point" Rubin received numerous honours for her work - she awarded the National Medal of Science in 1993 and became only the second woman after Caroline Herschel to receive the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society. Rubin was long considered a front-runner for the Nobel Prize, and many believe that the Committee's failure to recognise her before her death in 2016 will be a permanent stain on the organisation's credibility.       - [Soviet cooking book]. Handwritten album, with newspaper clippings to illustrate courses. [N.p., 1970-80s]. 265 pp. 29x21 cm. Cloth folder. Fine. An interesting and somewhat naive document of the time. Apparently the complier of this book tried to include as many 'international' recipes as possible, often putting the originating country in brackets. A lot of the clippings come from foreign newspapers. The ingredients however more or less match the assortment of the Soviet food stores. As a result we can see the attempt to diversify often scarce meals using the available ingredients. The sections included in the book are salads and cold starters; starters; meat, poultry and wildfowl; garnish, potatoes, cereals; vegetables; fish; conservation of food; dough products; deserts, jams and conservations of fruits and berries; pickles and marinades; desert, beverages, cocktails; other. The section on cocktails contains some of the simplest cocktails imaginable like 'Cocktail with beer and tea' which is essentially the 50% of cold tea with 50% of beer and lemon on the side (optional). Cocktail 'Cubanito' reminds us of ?uban-Soviet relationship, however the author of the book was not familiar with the Havana Club rum, so it was called 'Abana club' instead. Altogether the book gives 30 recipes for cocktails, including Campari, mulled wine, 'Old Russian', 'Polar Night', 'Winter tale', 'Flaming iceberg', etc. The author gives us 20 coffee variations, half of which contain alcohol. There are special subsection of recipes from the stale bread (9 recipes) including the method on how to freshen up stale bread. Author included advices on table manners: if you are taking the sugar cube out of the bowl, don't touch the cubes near it; don't blow on the soup to cool it; at the end of the book there are the tables of the cutlery that are appropriate for different courses. It's hard to imagine how one should obtain different types of forks in the reality of deficit. [Attributes: Hard Cover]

[A collection of 55 Vintage Photos]. [Supplied title: A Decade of Protest]. Photographic Archive of Protest Photos from the 1970s

Hemel Hempstead, Stevenage, Luton, etc.: s.n. [but from the Hemel Press Archive], 1970s (various dates, but 1970-1975). Each photograph preserved in a Mylar L-sleeve; in a fine protective case. Sizes vary (generally: 12" x 9") Extraordinary Archive of English protest photos from the angry first half decade of the 1970s, providing high quality images of demonstrations, marches and protests on subjects local to Hertfordshire, north of London, and beyond. The photographs are large format black and white -- about 27 x 21 cm -- silver gelatin prints with details relating the location, participation and sometimes photographer to the verso. Dating from 1970-1975, the demonstrators are seen protesting against everything from the Vietnam War and Apartheid in South Africa, to road crossings and factory closures in Hertfordshire. Mostly landscape in format, the images are redolent of their era with evocative details of clothing and fashion with many images of home-made signs espousing the myriad causes. Some of the most dramatic images include a confrontation between police and anti-apartheid campaigners in Trafalgar Square, October 1970 with other photogaphs picturing 'Salvage Luton', builders demanding minimum wage, a campaign for nursery education, against Russian occupation of Ukraine (1972), the march of the Bangladesh Action Committee march, a 'Boycott the Circus' demonstration and 'Women's Campaign for Soviet Jewry' etc.

Economist on Wall Street: Notes on the Sanctity of Gold, the Value of Money, the Security of Investments, and Other Delusions.

The Macmillan Company, New York 1970 - First edition of this classic collection of early Bernstein writings. Octavo, original cloth. Inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper, "For William- To show Wall Street has some good things about it. Peter Bernstein." Fine in a near fine dust jacket. Preface by Gilbert Kaplan. Peter Bernstein's Economist on Wall Street is a collection of writings from 1955 to 1970. The book is especially interesting because so many of Bernstein's observations reflect the most important issues of the presentâthe outlook for inflation and its control, the intricacies of monetary policy, the future of the dollar, and the dilemmas of household finances. Bernstein was also concerned with developments in portfolio management, including the new influence of institutional investors and rules for optimal asset mixes. He provides light touches, too, as he indulges in fantasies and philosophical musings over a wide variety of topics. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        Islands in the Stream

First edition, first printing. The first act, "Bimini", begins with an introduction to the character of Thomas Hudson, a typical Hemingway stoic male figure. Hudson is a renowned American painter who finds tranquility on the island of Bimini, in the Bahamas, a far cry from his usual adventurous lifestyle. Hudson's strict routine of work is interrupted when his three sons arrive for the summer and are the setting for most of the act. Also introduced in this act is the character of Roger Davis, a writer, one of Hudson's oldest friends. Though similar to Hudson, by struggling with an unmentioned internal conflict, Davis seems to act as a more dynamic and outgoing image of Hudson's character. The act ends with Hudson receiving news of the death of his two youngest children soon after they leave the island."Cuba" takes place soon thereafter during the Second World War in Havana, Cuba where we are introduced to an older and more distant Hudson who has just received news of his oldest (and last) son's death in the war. This second act introduces us to a more cynical and introverted Hudson who spends his days on the island drinking heavily and doing naval reconnaissance for the US military aboard Hudson's yacht, converted to an auxiliary patrol boat."At Sea", the final act, follows Hudson and a team of irregulars aboard their boat as they track and pursue survivors of a sunken German U-boat along the Jardines del Rey archipelago on the northern coast of Cuba. Hudson becomes intent on finding the fleeing Germans after he finds they massacred an entire village to cover their escape. The novel ends with a shoot-out and the destruction of the Germans in one of the tidal channels surrounding Cayo Guillermo. Hudson is presumably mortally wounded in the gun battle, although the ending is slightly ambiguous. During the chase, Hudson stops questioning the death of his children. This chapter rings heavily with influences of Hemingway's earlier work For Whom the Bell Tolls.Islands in the Stream (1970) is the first of the posthumously published works of Ernest Hemingway. The book was originally intended to revive Hemingway's reputation after the negative reviews of Across the River and Into the Trees. He began writing it in 1950 and advanced greatly through 1951. The work, rough but seemingly finished, was found by Mary Hemingway among 332 works Hemingway left behind at his death. Islands in the Stream was meant to encompass three stories to illustrate different stages in the life of its main character, Thomas Hudson. The three different parts of the novel were originally to be titled "The Sea When Young", "The Sea When Absent" and "The Sea in Being". These titles were changed, however, into what is now its three acts: "Bimini", "Cuba", and "At Sea".

        La Hojarasca.

Editorial Suamerica, Buenos Aires 1970 - First Argentinian edition of the Nobel Prize-winning author's first book. Octavo, original illustrated wrappers. Signed by Gabriel Garcia Marquez on the front free endpaper. From the library of Gregory Rabassa, with his signature. Rabassa was the translator of La Hojaraca into English and Cien Anos de Soledad, among others. He was a translator of the works of several major Latin American novelists, including Julio Cortazar, Jorge Amado and Gabriel Garcia Marquez. On the advice of Cortazar, Garcia Marquez waited three years for Rabassa to schedule translating One Hundred Years of Solitude. Garcia Marquez later declared Rabassa's translation to be superior to the Spanish original. In good condition. La Hojarosca was first published in Bogota, Columbia in 1955, later translated into English and published in 1972, as The Leaf Storm. Widely celebrated as the first appearance of Macondo, the fictitious village later celebrated in One Hundred Years of Solitude, La Hojarosca was a testing ground for many of the themes and characters later immortalized in One Hundred Years of Solitude. "Garcia Marquez has extraordinary strength and firmness of imagination and writes with the calmness of a man who knows exactly what wonders he can perform" (Alfred Kazin, New York Times Book Review).         Stockton Silver Hammer - 1-15

[no publisher], Stockton, California 1970 - A run of the first 15 issues of the biweekly alternative newspaper Stockton Silver Hammer. Each is a tabloid sized issue. Overall near fine with some toning to the cheap newsprint, waviness to later issues and all folded once as issued. The newspaper covered everything you would expect from an alternative newspaper in the early 1970s: the Vietnam War, unfair police enforcement, drug laws, entrenched politicians and (what they saw as) rigged elections. They also offered readers advice on drugs, abortion counseling, various protest efforts, woman's liberation, the struggle for Native American rights, the Kent State shootings, and the trial of the Soledad Brothers, to name a few. Most issues also included a plethora of spot illustration and full page cartoons by Gary Ratto and Carlos Lopez in the style of underground comixs of the day. The newspaper charged 15-cents per issue (unlike many of the other free underground newspapers across the country), possibly realizing it could not survive on advertising revenue in the mostly conservative Stockton area. If that was the case, they were unfortunately proved correct finally succumbing to printing costs after only 20 issues. OCLC locates five records, a mix of single issues and partial runs.

Studio International. July / August 1970. Journal of modern art. Book Supplement 17/6.

London. Studio International / Cory, Adams & Mackay Limited. 1970. First edition. 31 x 24 cm. XVI S., 1 Blatt, VIII S., 64 S. OKarton. David Antin lud Dan Graham, Harold Cohen, John Baldessari, Richard Serra, Eleanor Antin, Fred Lonidier, George Nicolaidis, Keith Sonnier ein, Germano Celant kuratierte Giovanni Anselmo, Alighiero Boetti, Pier Paolo Calzolari, Mario Merz, Giuseppe Penono, Emilio Prini, Pistoletto, Gilberto Zorio - Michel Claura beauftragte Daniel Buren, Charles Harrison kuratierte Keith Arnatt, Terry Atkinson, David Bainbridge, Michael Baldwin, Harold Hurrell, Victor Burgin, Barry Flanagan, Joseph Kosuth, John Latham, Reolof Louw. Lucy R. Lippard kuratierte die Amerikaner Robert Barry, Stephen Kaltenbach, Lawrence Weiner, On Kawara, Sol LeWitt, Douglas Huebler, N.E. [Vgl. Seth Siegelaub - Beyond Conceptual Art.
