Three months after arriving in Israel to avoid any legal problems which might arise in Miami, intending to become an Israeli citizen, Meyer Lansky asks that certain books be sent to him, telling his daughter to have her brother ìBuddy give you the names of some of the other F.B.I. titles that they may have on the shelf & ship Air Mail from the storeÿî

[Tel-Aviv, Israel]: , November 2, 1970 Autograph Letter Signed ìLove /Dad,î one page, 8.5î x 10.75î. [Tel-Aviv, Israel], November 2, 1970. To Meyer Lanskyís daughter Sandra and her husband Vince Lombardo, with original ìDan Hotel Tel Avivî mailing envelope addressed by Lansky; envelope right front side torn off. On lightweight lined paper. Fine condition. In part, ìLet me know about your local & State election results. Have Buddy [Sandraís eldest brother] give you the names of some of the other F.B.I. [book] titles that they may have on the shelf & ship Air Mail from the store. If Gary [Sandraís son] doesnít have use for his Polaroid Camera give it to Ted [wife Thelma called ìTeddyî] to bring along. Iím happy to hear Vince that your business is picking up Ã? Iím much contented here. As long as you are all well the rest doesnít matterÃ?î Robert Lacey in ìLittle Man: Meyer Lansky and the Gangster Lifeî (Boston: Little, Brown & Company, 1991) writes, ìIn 1964, Meyerís old friend Doc Stacher had avoided the worst consequences of a conviction for tax evasion by consenting to deportation and going to Israel to live. In July 1970, Meyer Lansky decided not to wait for the conviction ñ or anything else Ã? Lansky landed in Israel on July 27, 1970 Ã? He wanted to stay in Israel ñ and he wanted to live there not as a visitor, but as an Israeli citizen.î On December 7, 1970, Lansky requested Israeli citizenship under Israelís Law of Return which gives any Jew the right to be granted Israeli citizenship. However, it denies citizenship to a Jew ìwith a criminal past, likely to endanger the public welfare.î In March 1971, Lansky was charged with being involved in a conspiracy to skim from the Flamingo Hotel, his old Las Vegas venture with Bugsy Siegel. In May, Lanskyís U.S. passport was revoked and in September, his application for Israeli citizenship was denied. ìMeyer Lansky v. the State of Israelî was heard before the Israeli Supreme Court and on September 11, 1972, the court ruled unanimously against Lansky. After trying to find refuge outside the United States, on November 7, 1972, Meyer Lansky returned to Miami and was promptly arrested by FBI agents aboard the plane. In a 1988 interview with Robert Lacey, Anna Strasberg revealed that Meyer Lansky had phoned her husband, Lee Strasberg who was nominated for the 1975 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the role of Hyman Roth in ìThe Godfather, Part II.î With her husbandís knowledge, Anna listened in on the extension. Lansky said, ìYou did good.î Lee replied, ìThank you. I tried.î Lansky added, almost with a sense of humor according to Anna, ìNow, why couldnít you have made me more sympathetic? After all, I am a grandfather.î As far as Lansky writing heís ìhappy to hear Vince that your business is picking up,î Victor Riesel, in his December 10, 1970, nationally syndicated column, ìInside Labor,î reported that ìin the past month there have been two mass indictments Ã? on various charges. One Ã? is a 72-count securities fraud indictment and brings in some new names such as Vincent Lombardo, son-in-law of the shadowy financial wizard, Meyer LanskyÃ?î

Original Poster for 1970 Performances by Laura Nyro and The Band at The Berkeley Community Center (BG-215)

Los Angeles: Bill Graham No. BG-215-OP-1, 1970. Los Angeles: Bill Graham No. BG-215-OP-1, 1970. First Edition. First Edition. Vintage single poster for two separate January 1970 concerts by Laura Nyro (January 24th, one performance) and The Band (January 31st, two performances) at one of Bill Graham's "alternate" venues, The Berkeley Community Center in Berkeley, CA. First issue, per the points in Eric King's poster guide. & & The time of these performances found both Ms. Nyro and The Band touring at the peak of their creative powers. Laura Nyro had released "New York Tendaberry" in the fall of 1969, a record that took her already-established gift for songwriting into much darker territory. The Band had released its second eponymous record, also in the fall of 1969, which contained songs that are deeply ingrained classics today, including "Up on Cripple Creek" and "The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down." & & A poster that was printed only once, and in small numbers due to it being for an alternate venue. As a result, an item that is somewhat scarcer than other Bill Graham posters from the same period at Winterland and Fillmore West. A superb example. & & 14 x 22 inches. A few tiny tackholes and one very small bruise (artwork not affected) at the extremities, Near Fine condition overall. & & King, The Collector's Guide to Psychedelic Rock Concert Posters, BG-215-OP-1.         In the Night Kitchen

New York: Harper & Row, 1970. First edition. Signed by the author on the front free endpaper. Near fine in a very good first issue dust jacket with the correct code. The Caledecott medal is adhered to the front panel. A nice copy, rather uncommon signed.Having received nine awards, The Night Kitchen's popularity is evident, but so is its controversy. When three-year-old protagonist Mickey enters the Night Kitchen, he loses his pajamas and is fully naked in some parts of the story. Some critics have objected to Mickey's nudity, which is fully depicted, and others have interpreted sexual innuendo in the proceeding events. Consequently, the book's release in the United States sparked debate, with the inclusion of child nudity frequently noted as morally problematic. The book has been ranked 25th place on the "100 Most Frequently Challenged Books of 1990-2000" list by the American Library Association.

        Slaughterhouse-Five

London: Jonathan Cape. (1970). The uncorrected proof copy of the first British edition of his masterwork, a powerful fictional memoir of his experiences during the Allied fire-bombing of Dresden, Germany. On all three major lists of the top books of the 20th century. Creased, stained, abraded; good in wrappers. Scarce: while it is not known how many copies of this proof were prepared, the bibliographers report that only 39 copies of the proof of the American edition were done, and it is reasonable to suppose that there would not have been more copies done in the U.K. than in the U.S. The last copy we handled was in 1998. . First Edition. Softcover.

        Tasmanian Angler

Launceston: Foot & Playstead. 1970. First edition. #25 of 1000 copies, signed by both authors. With a Foreword by Sir Hudson Fysh. Large 8vo. 86pp, illustrated, pictorial endpapers. Maroon cloth with dustwrapper (in new protective sleeve). The wrapper has had the price cut out (a small rectangle from the fore-edge of the front blurb) and has an old tape repair to the head of the spine (both sides), and there are a few slight marks left by tape from a previous covering on the rear flap. Two almost imperceptible tape marks on each of the pictorial endpapers, otherwise a nice clean copy. Owner's name. Very good. ***Copies of this title are not always signed by the authors, as called for; some are with the signature of one, or the other, or neither. Evidently the publisher did not have the authors sign all copies at publication. .

Measures approximately 17.5" x 11". Neatly tipped-in at the corner edges into a mat frame. A fine copy.
