        IF WE TAKE [Inscribed Association]

Black Sparrow Press, [Los Angeles] 1970 - 12mo. String-tied stiff printed wraps. Near fine with touches of rubbing, soil. One of 350 copies. INSCRIBED by Bukowski to Harold Norse: "12 -27 - 69 / For Hal Norse - / We've both been / through the fire, / dear friend, and / there's more to come - / more fire more o / so much more fire, / and we can only / wonder if we will / kill ourselves first, / or they. No matter - / they will never know. / yrs, / Charles Bukowski." Bukowski has also added to inside of front cover an illustration of a man smoking, signed "Buk." An extraordinary and warm inscription in the first of many Black Sparrow greetings Bukowski would do for the press. Norse, perennial literary scenester and author of the classic cut-up novel Beat Hotel, was a frequent Bukowski correspondent beginning in the mid 1960's, and it was Norse who recommended Bukowski to Penguin Press for their Modern Poets series (he and Norse appeared together in the thirteenth installment) -- then Bukowski's highest-profile appearance to date. But the two didn't meet in person until January of 1969, a little less than a year before this inscription. Norse recalls the experience in his book MEMOIRS OF A BASTARD ANGEL: "I knew that a wild Falstaffian ruffian had come to shake things up with more fiction than fact, more fantasy than truth [.] Bukowski was misshapen [.] He looked [.] down and out" (p. 420). And indeed, the poet was down and out: frustrated at his job for the Post Office and desperate to find a way to support himself from his writing alone. He would soon find that opportunity later the same year when Black Sparrow publisher John Martin famously offered Bukowski a guaranteed $100 a month for life if he wrote for the press full time. According to Martin, their agreement went into effect January 2nd, 1970 - just six days after this inscription and only a few weeks before Bukowski completed his first novel, Post Office. Norse and Bukowski remained life-long -- if contentious -- friends and correspondents (a collection of their letter has been slated, but delayed, for publication since 2002). Quite simply, one of the closest and warmest Bukowski associations we've seen, capturing the poet at a pivotal moment in his career. [Krumhansl 31]. [Morrow and Cooney 74].         Projet pour une révolution à New York. Roman.

Paris, Editions de Minuit, No. 31 of 99 copies printed on Pur Fil Lafuma paper. 1970 - Edition Originale/First Edition of a French novel. The text is in FRENCH. 213 pp. 5 ½ in. x 7 ½ in. Bound in this copy is a four-page brochure by the author regarding this book. This copy is bound by Pierre-Lucien Martin (1913-1985), with his name stamped on the lower edge of the inner front cover. The binding features a spine and sides of polished leather with an in-laid geometric design in red, blue, and brown leathers, with light maroon paper over boards, with gilt outlining and gilt titling, and cover fore-edges in black polished leather. Top edge gilt. Blue end papers with original printed spine and covers bound in. A light maroon paper-covered felt-lined slipcase with the outer edges in black polished leather. Small leather owner’s label with initials "JD" on the front free end-paper. This book has an unusual and beautiful geometric binding. M. Martin ranks high among the outstanding French design bookbinders of the last 50 years. He was trained at the École Estiènne in Paris and worked for a number of binders before striking out on his own after World War II. His designs are characterized by subtle coloring and geometrical patterns seeking to create a three-dimensional effect. His bindings are very uncommon in the marketplace. An extremely fine copy.       Los Angeles 1970 - An original typed letter from Charles Bukowski to his dear friends and publishers John and Gypsy Lou Webb, dated 8-20-70 and signed "Buk" in blue ballpoint pen. The letter is typed on standard 8.5 X11" paper and comes with the original mailing envelope. The letter has two folds from mailing and is stained in the margins by either beer or coffee - though considering the source, it's probably beer (would you really have it any other way?). A solid half-page letter, single spaced, and of a personal nature. The letter reads: " Hello Jon and Lou - first sober day--so far--in a week. that half-century mark was a tough leap. good to get your card. any future birthdays won't matter so much. know you are busy with the Miller so won't burden you with a lot of talk. I contacted Steve Richmond, trying to get you a place down by the water so Lou won't act up. only problem with Venice is there are a lot of freaky hippy-yippie types. I don't mind a real hippie who slams from town to town, getting jobs picking fruit or whatever the hell. we used to call them bums in my day. I was a bum. still am. got nothing against bums. but most of the Venice hippie types are of the plastic variety, paying rent and with incomes from somewhere and wandering around. so there's that. anyhow, if you want to contact Steve Richmond further, I am enclosing his letter and will put his address down below. he plays with candles but only opens the place once or twice a week. the only thing is, for all the drawbacks, you might get a very reasonable deal, since I believe his parents own the place and about half of Venice, but Steve doesn't like to hear that part, he's very touchy about it. I'm told he goes about collecting rents and gets his own place rentfree. he's a very ####### quiet, non-bullshit guy but don't touch his you-are-rich button--he apes out. I was thinking he might get you a place of your own. if you drop him a short card or letter telling him what you are looking for it might help. I told Jon (Jr.) that it's pretty ard to think about a place for you when you are uncertain and so far away. by the way, Jon Jr. and Jery Sherman were over here the other day clacking beercans. they got along very well. me, I just don't get along with many people mainly because what they are interested in or fronting doesn't bring me on. you might say it's my fault. would like to see you two though and don't you dare come to town even for a short visit without coming to see me, god dam it. stay with it, Buk." The Webb's were early champions of Bukowski's work, publishing two of his early books, "It Catches My Heart In It's Hands" and "Crucifix In A Death Hand." As letters go, this one's pretty nice, showing both genuine affection for his friends and a bit of his personal ethos as well. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Raging Bull: My Story

Englewood Cliffs, NJ: Prentice Hall, Inc. 1970 - Illustrated with black and white photographs of LaMotta. First edition, first printing. Signed by La Motta on the title page. Publisher's red cloth, spine lettered in gilt; in the original red pictorial dust jacket, illustrated by Murray Olderman, lettered in white and black. Very good or better, with some light wear to the extremities, bright and fresh interior; unclipped dust jacket, with minor wear and rubbing to the extremities, toning to the spine, short closed tear to the top of the front panel, a few faint hints of light soiling to the otherwise fresh panels, else fine. Overall, a clean and pleasing copy. This copy of Raging Bull was inscribed by LaMotta to former owner Joe Pacheco on December 9, 2007, at an MAB Celebrity Services event in Northern New Jersey. Raging Bull: My Story is a memoir by middle-weight boxing champion Jake "The Raging Bull" LaMotta, written with Joseph Carter and Peter Savage. LaMotta traces his affinity for fighting from his early childhood, where, as an Italian-American in the Bronx, he "was taught early that if you wanted to survive you had to be tougher than the next guy." The text chronicles LaMotta's success through the 1940s-1950s, including his 1949 middleweight championship and intense rivalry with Sugar Ray Johnson, and extends through the culmination of his boxing fame. In 1980, Raging Bull was adapted into a film of the same name, directed by Martin Scorsese and starring Robert DeNiro. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

        In Pursuit: An Autobiography.

London The Medici Society (1970) - Small folio. (266) pp. One of 1050 copies signed by Francis Russell Flint, the artist's son. This richly illustrated work covers the varied career of this Scots artist, perhaps best known for his work with the Riccardi Press. It was published on what would have been Flint's 90th birthday, in accordance with his wishes; but he passed away just five months shy of that milestone. This book has been specially bound by Elizabeth Greenhill in full blue Oasis, featuring her characteristic "cloud" design comprised of multi-colored onlays. Here, the onlays are turquoise, black, green, pale red, and gray. These are interspersed with small straight horizontal lines tooled in gilt. Spine title in gilt. A.e.g. Greenhill credits John Harthan with coining the term "cloud" to describe her most typical binding style. He notes that this treatment is most often given to poetry, and that the variations in design and color "establish the binder's personal reaction to specific texts." In the present example, which was bound in 1971, the small gilt lines streaking across both panels almost seem like a horizontal rain against these colorful formations. Very fine in morocco-backed folding case. (Catalogue Raisonné 62). [Attributes: Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Dali: A Study of His Art-in-Jewels - The Collection of the Owen Cheatham Foundation [ Signed By Dali ]

The New York Graphic Society, Greenwich, CT 1970 - A very good copy of the presumed first hard cover edition (no explicit edition or printing statement), lacking a dust-jacket (perhaps as issued), in a good+ slipcase, and signed extravagantly by Dali on the front free endpaper. Else the text is wholly unmarked, pristine, and the binding with gilt lettering on the spine is quite bright and fresh in appearance, with a bit of fraying at the bottom corners of the boards. Some surface abrasions to the pastedown of the slipcase; a 1/4" tear to the bottom fore-edge, and a 1/2" tear and bump to bottom edge of the slipcase. A superb copy, rarely found signed.         THE EYE IN THE TRIANGLE. An Interpretation of Aleister Crowley. Inscribed

Llewellyn Publications, Saint Paul, Minnesota: 1970 - Presentation Copy. 8vo., A near fine copy in the publisher's black cloth, gilt - in a lightly used dustwrapper. Regardie has warmly inscribed this book to Ursula Greville: "For Ursula / who did some editing on this magnum opus / Love, Francis." {Regardie dedicated AHA! to Ursula Greville a 'loving, generous, devoted friend of many years who, like Aleister Crowley changed the entire course of my life.'} This is a stated First Edition / First Printing. There is some light wear to the board's extremities & to the crown and foot of the book's spine. There are three small page notations on the final free endpaper. The dustwrapper is not price clipped; with the original publisher's price of $10.00 still intact on the front flap. There is a 1" x 2" chip missing from the top right corner of the front panel and a 2" closed tear in the same area. There are several small chips missing from the crown of the DJ's spine. "Aleister Crowley has for years been reviled by the public media as 'The Most Evil Man in the World.' And he has for years been hailed by a small handful of scholars as the greatest of modern mystics, the 'Prophet of a New Aeon.' Now, The Eye in the Triangle appears to clear up some aspects of the dual mystery. In this book Israel Regardie examines the life and work of Aleister Crowley from a sympathetically objective point of view. Many of Crowley's loveliest and holiest works are quoted from sources long out of print. The Eye in the Triangle is essential to an understanding not only of Crowley but of all modern magic and occultism." -- from the book's dustwrapper [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Cruising (Signed First Edition, review copy)

Stein and Day, New York 1970 - First Edition. REVIEW COPY, with publisher's slip, author's glossy review photo, and publisher letter laid in. This copy is also humorously INSCRIBED by the author in the year of publication to noted bibliophile Burt Britton: "Sept. 5, 1970 / For Burt Britton - / Who swears he'll never turn me in to IRS (and whom I will not turn in to Doubleday). / Regards, / Gerry Walker." Britton published a book a few years later, titled, "Self-Portrait: Book People Picture Themselves," which contained hundreds of self-caricatures of authors he had collected over the years. Walker was the editor of The New York Times Magazine beginning in 1963, and this was his only novel, a brutal view into the lives of gay male culture in the 1970s (set almost entirely in Manhattan gay bars of the late 1960s), and its relationship to crime and police brutality. Basis for the 1980 film, directed by William Friedkin and starring Al Pacino, Paul Sorvino and Karen Allen. Fine and unread in a Fine dust jacket. Scarce in this condition and rare with any kind of association. [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
