Playscript]: The Great Gatsby: A Musical Adaptation of the F. Scott Fitzgerald Novel

Artie Shaw Presents, New York 1970 - Playscript. Quarto. Bradbound in embossed black Studio Duplicating Service wrappers. A bit of edgewear, but near fine. Numbered in pencil as copy number 4. Agent's (CAA) card with the name "D. Hickman" (presumably Dwayne Hickman) laid in. As near as we can tell, never produced. Relatively early in the career of two-time Tony Award winner Wheeler -- he had only three plays produced on Broadway up until that time. Presumably very scarce. *OCLC* locates a single copy, at University of South Carolina. [Attributes: First Edition; Soft Cover]

        Out of the Shelter.

London: Macmillan, 1970 - Octavo. Original green boards, titles to spine gilt. With the dust jacket. Spot to front flap of jacket continuing to front pastedown, a few faint spots to edges. An excellent copy in the very lightly rubbed and toned jacket. First edition, first impression. This novel was one of the first to be printed by computer and the process was deeply flawed, resulting in significant textual errors. The entire first edition was recalled and we know of only three extant copies, making this volume a significant rarity. [Attributes: First Edition]

Out Of The Shelter ( Signed By the Author )

Macmillan 1970 - A First UK printing published by Macmillan in 1970.This title was one of the first to be printed by computer and the process was very problematic. The BOOK is in VERY GOOD condition being tight and with clean boards. There is very mild creasing at the spine ends. There is some slight splaying of the boards. Mild tanning of the page edges due to the cheap quality of the paper used. Some dustiness and mild foxing spots to the text block. One penned inscription to the front end paper: "Review Copy.John White.ix.70". The WRAPPER is complete and in VERY GOOD+ condition. It has minor edge-wear and there is a 1’ closed tear to the upper rear cover. Some browning to the folds, spine and upper cover edges. The Justin Todd wrapper artwork looks striking in the removable Brodart archival cover. This copy has been SIGNED by David Lodge directly to the title page and the event signing ticket accompanies the book as provenance. The book is also accompanied by the Secker and Warburg HB 1970 second edition reprint of this title which is also author signed and in near FINE condition.A very scarce early David Lodge title. ashtonrarebooks welcomes direct contact.         Intensive Care

George Braziller, New York 1970 - Sunned spine as is unfortunately common with this title, slight wear on jacket surfaces. Inscribed by author on the fep "To ----- from Janet Frame Dec 1970". Spine square, interior clean and unmarked. The story of Tom Livingstone, wounded World War I soldier, father, husband, who falls in love with his nurse, and cherishes the dream until many years later fate brings them together again. A piercing comment on the acceptance of fascism in pre-WWII New Zealand and it's possible consequences. "Frame depicts an appallingly believable future for once innocent and humanitarian New Zealand." [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]

Anonyme Skulpturen: A Typology of Technical Constructions.

Art Press, Dusseldorf 1970 - First edition of the Becher's first major photobook with 194 black-and-white photogravure plates. Quarto, original blue cloth. Signed by both Bernd and Hilla Becher. Fine in a bright near fine dust jacket that shows only a hint of rubbing. Housed in a custom made box. Text in German, English, and French. An exceptional copy. "The Bechers' first major book, Anonyme Skulpturen has had an enormous impact For those who are more interested in the Bechers as artists than as industrial archaeologists, this is the one to have on one's shelf" (Parr & Badger II:266). "The serial nature of the Bechers' process rhymes with their mass-produced subjects so that method and subject are splendidly reciprocal, a meditation on identity and difference. The year this book appeared, the Bechers' work was included in the influential Information show curated by Kynaston McShine at the Museum of Modern Art" (Roth, 194).         Bernhard (Bernd) und Hilla Becher: Anonyme Skulpturen [SIGNED]: Eine Typologie Technischer Bauten (Anonymous Sculptures: A Typology of Technical Buildings)

ART-PRESS Verlag, in association with Wittenborn and Co., New York, Düsseldorf 1970 - First edition, first printing. Signed ("B+H Becher") in black ink on the title page by Hilla Becher. Hardcover. Navy blue cloth-covered boards with title stamped in white on cover and spine, with photographically illustrated dust jacket. Photographs and brief descriptive texts (in English, French and German) by Bernd and Hilla Becher. Includes photographs of lime-kilns, cooling-towers, blast-furnaces, winding-towers (mineheads), water towers, gas-holders and silos. Unpaginated (236 pp.), with 194 black and white plates. 11-1/4 x 9 inches. Out of print. An extremely scarce and important early major monograph by the Bechers. CONDITION: Fine in Near Fine dust jacket (small abrasion on lower rear dust jacket edge, slight edge wear; no tears, chips or other flaws). A beautiful very rare signed copy. [Cited in Andrew Roth, ed., The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century. (New York: PPP Editions in association with Roth Horowitz LLC, 2001), in Andrew Roth, ed., The Open Book. (Göteborg, Sweden: Hasselblad Center in association with Steidl Verlag, Göttingen, Germany, 2004), and in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).] From Martin Parr and Gerry Badger: "The extensive series that the Bechers later made for Schirmer/Mosel and MIT Press.while preserving the aesthetic rigour of their earlier work, emphasizes the documentary aspect, and has a particular archival, historical value. Anonyme Skulpturen, though it hardly neglects the informational importance of their practice, seems much more about making an aesthetic statement and establishing the artists' position in late twentieth-century art. All their books are polemical, but this represents their primary artistic credo. For those who are more interested in the Bechers as artists than as industrial archaeologists, this is the one to have on one's shelf."         Anonyme Skulpturen: A Typology of Technical Constructions

Wittenborn and Co., New York 1970 - Hardcover in dust jacket. 4vo. First American edition. Blue boards with white lettering. Top two inches of cloth covering the spine is missing. Binding is tight, pages are crisp and clean. No bumping to corners, no foxing, no soiling, no tears to pages. Dust jacket looks Fine from the front and back but half of the spine paper is missing and the front and back jacket have a long tear, so it is the Mylar jacket that is holding the jacket in place. Despite these significant flaws, this copy is a handsome specimen. The Becher's first book of early photographs (1960s) of industrial structures, lime kilns, cooling towers, blast furnaces, winding towers, water towers, gas holders and silos is considered by many their most important book. A landmark in the history of photography, the book combines documentary and architectural photography, and creates an aesthetic impact that has had an enormous influence not only on the next generation of German and Europeans photographers, but also on contemporary Japanese and American photography. (Andrew Roth: The Open Book; Martin Parr/Gerry Badger: The Photobook, Volume II.) Minimal text is in English, French, and German. Small bookstore sticker on rear flap, from the legendary Jaap Rietman art bookstore in New York. Unpaginated. Detailed scans available on request. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]

Ownership signature of Michael Kasdan, the General Manager of the original Broadway production, as well as several lines struck through, and a word or two added, almost certainly in his hand, otherwise near fine. The corrections are reflected in the eventual text published by Atheneum in 1971. The script is dated "August-November 1970," several months before the first preview performance on March 15, 1971. Despite the original production lasting a total of only 54 performances, Colleen Dewhurst (who co-starred with Jessica Tandy) was nominated for a Tony Award for Best Actress in a Play, and won the 1971 Drama Desk Award for Outstanding Performance. Referred to as Albee's "most important play yet" by Clive Barnes of The New York Times. .

Ioannis Dlugossii Annales, seu, Cronicae incliti Regni Poloniae. [Annalen oder Chroniken des berühmten Königreiches von Polen]., Liber Tertius. Liber Quartus (1 Vol.)

Varsaviae, Pánstwowe Wydawn Naukowe, 1970 - Umschlag leicht berieben, sonst gutes Exemplar. - Text lateinisch.
