A pen drawing by Robert Lenkiewicz with the caption "The folly of the alchemists. After Urs Graf, in J. Scheible, Das Kloster, Vol. I, Stuttgart, 1845." Not dated but probably executed in the 1970s. [ circa 1970 ].

      - The drawing is in ink (probably executed with some sort of fine marker) on a sheet of white paper, with a caption immediately below the design reading "The folly of the alchemists. After Urs Graf, in J. Scheible, Das Kloster, Vol. I, Stuttgart, 1845." The size of the image and immediate surrounds (as shown) is approx. 6.5 inches high x 10.5 inches wide (165mm high x 265mm wide). The image is drawn "landscape" on a sheet that is 13 inches high x 10.25 inches wide (330mm high x 260mm wide). Robert Oscar Lenkiewicz (1941 - 2002) was a renowned British artist, Hermeticist, and student of the alchemical arts, who was also well-known as an eccentric and book-collector. He was a regular visitor to the British Library and the British Museum, where he made careful sketches based on the illustrations and diagrams that were relevant to his studies that he found in rare alchemical manuscripts and books. This is one such drawing, apparently done after a much earlier woodcut that was reproduced in the famous German collection of early magical and Hermetic texts, "Das Kloster." It is one of a number of such sketches, some loose, some housed in a large folio entitled "On Alchemical Apparatus" that were evidently related to his personal researches into the subject rather than being "finished artworks" intended for exhibition or sale. As such it is not signed, although we do provide a guarantee and certificate of authenticity. Two small holes punched in the extreme left margin, neither of which are near the image area. The merest hint of discoloration, but over all in VG + condition and would frame nicely. A good opportunity to acquire an authentic and intimate memento of this fascinating artist & hermeticist, at a fraction of the price that one of his own finished artworks would fetch.

[Screenplay]: The Silent Flute [Circle of Iron]

Pingree-Panpiper Productions. 1970. Screenplay, "October 19, 1970." Foreword by Bruce Lee. Quarto. 70pp. Bradbound in printed blue wrappers. Near fine with some toning on the front wrap, some bumping on a couple corners, and the title written in the lower page ends as typical. The screenplay for the unrealized Lee film that was shelved after his untimely death in 1973. The film, about a martial arts expert, played by James Coburn, who must pass three trials to obtain a book containing martial art secrets, was to costar Lee playing different roles along the fighter's journey. The story was a joint effort by Lee, Coburn, and his longtime friend, Stirling Silliphant, an Academy Award-winning screenwriter (In The Heat of the Night) who penned the screenplay in a "European" form that reads like a treatment without scene breakdowns or camera directions. Lee hoped the picture would bring Eastern Philosophy to a Western audience, as he states in the script's two-page foreword. The film was rewritten as the abysmal 1978 Circle of Iron starring Jeff Cooper in the Coburn role with David Carradine stepping in for Lee, along with Eli Wallach, Christopher Lee, and Roddy McDowall. Rare. .

        Mardi Gras in New Orleans

London: Self Published, 1970. First Edition. Softcover.. VG+. Square 8vo, Unpaginated (ca 120pp). Stiff printed wraps as issued. Numerous Black & White plates. A little rubbed and soiled. Stamped by Demoruelle to cover and signed by him to the last page. More images available on request. Incredibly scarce privately printed book, with only 1 institutional copy and a few copies in private hands. Local man Demoruelle shoots Mardi Gras, but ignores the floats and performers to document the crowd, the streets, the drunks, the sailors and the families. A very striking, natural and individual document of a very special (and long gone) phenomenon, Demoruelle has an excellent eye for detail and a natural flair for capturing the somewhat ethereal spirit of New Orleans in the late sixties. Really the best book on the subject, and certainly the rarest.

Andy Warhol Catalogue Raisonne Volume 3: Paintings and Sculptures 1970-1974

Phaidon, 2010. Hardback. New. <p>The&#160;sculpture and paintings of 1970&#8211;4 are the subject of this&#160;third volume of the catalogue dedicated to publishing the complete paintings, sculptures and drawings of Andy Warhol (1928&#8211;87). As authoritative and detailed as the highly praised first two volumes, here Warhol&#39;s&#160;sculptures and paintings&#160;of these four years are comprehensively catalogued and illustrated. Early in this period Warhol was concentrating on film and sculpture, as he had been since being shot in 1968, but by late 1971 or early 1972 he was returning to painting and developing his painterly, &#39;sloppy and fast&#39;&#160;style; a dramatic shift from his &#39;hard&#39; mechanical style of before 1968. The volume covers major sculptures, such as the <i>Rain Machine</i>, the series of paintings <i>Mao</i> and <i>Man Ray</i>, and commissioned portraits of important, celebrated and fashionable people of the day &#8211; many from Warhol&#39;s travels through Europe during this time. It is a time of great transition for Warhol, including developing his relationships with&#160;various media and&#160;the impact of his first purchase of a Big Shot Polaroid camera. His diaries and the photographs he took on travels and of his subjects enliven the narrative and give intriguing insights&#160;into his works of these years and his unique engagement with the culture and society&#160;of that time.</p>SKU: MM-40001360; EAN: 9780714856988

Anonyme Skulpturen: A Typology of Technical Constructions

New York: Wittenborn and Co., 1970. Hardcover. Very Good/Good +. Hardcover in dust jacket. 4vo. First American edition. Blue boards with white lettering. Top two inches of cloth covering the spine is missing. Binding is tight, pages are crisp and clean. No bumping to corners, no foxing, no soiling, no tears to pages. Dust jacket looks Fine from the front and back but half of the spine paper is missing and the front and back jacket have a long tear, so it is the Mylar jacket that is holding the jacket in place. Despite these significant flaws, this copy is a handsome specimen. The Becher&#39;s first book of early photographs (1960s) of industrial structures, lime kilns, cooling towers, blast furnaces, winding towers, water towers, gas holders and silos is considered by many their most important book. A landmark in the history of photography, the book combines documentary and architectural photography, and creates an aesthetic impact that has had an enormous influence not only on the next generation of German and Europeans photographers, but also on contemporary Japanese and American photography. (Andrew Roth: The Open Book; Martin Parr/Gerry Badger: The Photobook, Volume II.) Minimal text is in English, French, and German. Small bookstore sticker on rear flap, from the legendary Jaap Rietman art bookstore in New York. Unpaginated. Detailed scans available on request.

        8 x 10 Art Portfolio -- September 1970

[New York: Jeanie Black and Ely Raman]. September 1970. Artist publication. A collection of 11 sheets, all fine, housed in a toned folder splitting at several of the folds, very good. A portfolio magazine created by photographer Jeanie Black and Fluxus artist Ely Raman, published over nine issues between 1970-1972. This issue includes a sculpture-graphic of a Campbell Soup can, questionnaire, and drawing by Raman; a photoprint by Black; drawing by Vivian Browne; a mock coloring book page with a picture of a bomb by D. Capobianco; an anonymous three-page paper doll kit; an anonymous four word poem; and a dated letter soliciting funds (likely a last ditch effort to keep the publication going before it ended later that year). Asked many years later about the publication, Raman commented: "I realize that our historical consciousness (or self-consciousness?) was notably absent. The issues were not numbered or dated, the contributions often not properly identified (or footnoted) and we did not include serious (academic) verbiage identifying what we were doing in the context of art. Too busy making art to write or talk about it." The lack of documentation, the generic title, and the seeming randomness of each issue makes finding other copies of the publication difficult. While there are several sets at institutions, individual issues are quite scarce in the trade. .

Anonyme Skulpturen: A Typology of Technical Constructions.

Art Press, Dusseldorf 1970 - First edition of the Becher's first major photobook with 194 black-and-white photogravure plates. Quarto, original blue cloth. Signed by both Bernd and Hilla Becher. Fine in a bright near fine dust jacket that shows only a hint of rubbing. Housed in a custom made box. Text in German, English, and French. An exceptional copy. "The Bechers' first major book, Anonyme Skulpturen has had an enormous impact For those who are more interested in the Bechers as artists than as industrial archaeologists, this is the one to have on one's shelf" (Parr & Badger II:266). "The serial nature of the Bechers' process rhymes with their mass-produced subjects so that method and subject are splendidly reciprocal, a meditation on identity and difference. The year this book appeared, the Bechers' work was included in the influential Information show curated by Kynaston McShine at the Museum of Modern Art" (Roth, 194).         Bernhard (Bernd) und Hilla Becher: Anonyme Skulpturen [SIGNED]: Eine Typologie Technischer Bauten (Anonymous Sculptures: A Typology of Technical Buildings)

ART-PRESS Verlag, in association with Wittenborn and Co., New York, Düsseldorf 1970 - First edition, first printing. Signed ("B+H Becher") in black ink on the title page by Hilla Becher. Hardcover. Navy blue cloth-covered boards with title stamped in white on cover and spine, with photographically illustrated dust jacket. Photographs and brief descriptive texts (in English, French and German) by Bernd and Hilla Becher. Includes photographs of lime-kilns, cooling-towers, blast-furnaces, winding-towers (mineheads), water towers, gas-holders and silos. Unpaginated (236 pp.), with 194 black and white plates. 11-1/4 x 9 inches. Out of print. An extremely scarce and important early major monograph by the Bechers. CONDITION: Fine in Near Fine dust jacket (small abrasion on lower rear dust jacket edge, slight edge wear; no tears, chips or other flaws). A beautiful very rare signed copy. [Cited in Andrew Roth, ed., The Book of 101 Books: Seminal Photographic Books of the Twentieth Century. (New York: PPP Editions in association with Roth Horowitz LLC, 2001), in Andrew Roth, ed., The Open Book. (Göteborg, Sweden: Hasselblad Center in association with Steidl Verlag, Göttingen, Germany, 2004), and in Martin Parr and Gerry Badger, The Photobook: A History, Volume II. (London and New York: Phaidon, 2006).] From Martin Parr and Gerry Badger: "The extensive series that the Bechers later made for Schirmer/Mosel and MIT Press.while preserving the aesthetic rigour of their earlier work, emphasizes the documentary aspect, and has a particular archival, historical value. Anonyme Skulpturen, though it hardly neglects the informational importance of their practice, seems much more about making an aesthetic statement and establishing the artists' position in late twentieth-century art. All their books are polemical, but this represents their primary artistic credo. For those who are more interested in the Bechers as artists than as industrial archaeologists, this is the one to have on one's shelf."         Anonyme Skulpturen: A Typology of Technical Constructions

Wittenborn and Co., New York 1970 - Hardcover in dust jacket. The Becher's first book of early photographs (1960s) of industrial structures, lime kilns, cooling towers, blast furnaces, winding towers, water towers, gas holders and silos is considered by many their most important book. [Attributes: First Edition; Hard Cover]
