Typed Letter Signed concerning censorship and manipulation of broadcast television

Boston, 1970. unbound. 2 pages on "Li'L Abner" stationery, 8 x 8.5 inches, April 20, 1970 [written on envelope]. In this letter, Capp responds to a young lady who has written to columnist Harry Harris, a friend of Capp's from the "Philadelphia Inquirer," in part: "...I read your letter to Harry Harris in which you sympathized with me for playing 'Daniel' to a 'lion's den' of nasty students on the Educational program 'The Show'...They had been instructed, they said, by the bearded and beaded producers of 'The Show' to - 'kick the hell out of Al Capp'. And your sympathy should go to those people whose contributions to 'Educational' TV support it, in the honest hope they are supporting honest journalism. They were short changed. Many of the responses you heard from me on the version you saw were not mine, in any honest journalistic sense. They were mutilated (phrases omitted, endings omitted, transposed and re-arranged) and then glued together, out of context, in the fashion made famous by the late Senator Joe McCarthy. The ending you saw was not the original ending...it was hastily substituted without our knowledge for the true ending...My reply and final summing up was cut out, and so was the response to it...As for myself, I consider anyone who alters my opinions no better than anyone who alters my signature. But it is comforting to know, isn't it, Julie, that program-rigging, which was cleaned out of commercial TV years ago, is alive and well, and working in 'Educational' television in Hershey, Pa." Horizontal folds; several handwritten corrections; paperclip impression at the top of the second page. Very good condition. American cartoonist and humorist best known for the satirical comic strip "Li'L Abner.

V TRE NO. 8: JOHN YOKO & FLUX

(V TRE) (ONO, YOKO) (LENNON, JOHN). Moore, Peter. V TRE NO. 8: JOHN YOKO & FLUX. New York: Fluxus, 1970. First Edition. Elephant Folio. Tabloid Format Wrappers. Fluxus Periodical. Near Fine. One 22 x 34" sheet printed offset recto and verso, neatly folded in eighths to make 4pp, 123 b&w illustrations + one 20 x 6" sheet printed offset recto and verso, neatly folded in half, no illustrations, as issued. Despite being labeled "No. 8" on the cover, this is actually the ninth installment of noted irregular Fluxus periodical "V Tre". It takes the form of a huge two-sided poster reproducing Peter Moore's photographic documentation of New York Flux activities between New Year's eve 1969 and May 1970 - primarily the numerous events and performances of works by John Lennon and Yoko Ono staged in the Big Apple that spring. The usual suspects pictured here include Jonas Mekas, George Maciunas, Emmett Williams, Alison Knowles, Robert Watts, Yoshimasa Wada, Joan Mathews, Geoff and Bici Hendricks, Dick Higgins, Peter Van Riper, Wolf Vostell, Donna and Joe Jones, Henry Flynt, and numerous unidentified participants. Also included is the publisher's loose caption sheet identifying the images. A handsome example of this uncommon item (cited on pages 185-190 of Phillip E. Aarons' "In Numbers: Serial Publications by Artists Since 1955") complete with caption sheet showing some very slight toning along with a discreet half-inch separation along one of the folds. The New West Trilogy (First Editions, First Printings)

Colorado and Germany: The Colorado Associated University Press and Stiftung Niedersachen. 1st Edition 1st Printing. Hardcover. Fine/Fine. This is a set of Robert Adams critically acclaimed \"New West Trilogy\" consisting of first edition, first printings of \"The New West : Landscapes Along the Colorado Front Range\", \"Denver: A Photographic Survey of the Metropolitan Area\", and \"What We Bought: The New World, Scenes from the Denver Metropolitan Area 1970-1974\". The trilogy is a comprehensive exploration and documentation of the rapidly developing landscape of the Denver metropolitan area from 1968 through 1974 and the victory of consumerism over our so-called love of nature and rugged individualism. The following are the details on the three books: \"The New West: Landscapes Along the Colorado Front Range\" - First Edition, First Printing published by The Colorado Associated University Press in 1974. Containing 56 black and white photographs and measuring approximately 9 x 10 inches, the book is bound in brown cloth covered boards with a photographically illustrated dust jacket. The book is in FINE- condition with the name of the previous owner written in very small letters on the first free endpaper. The dust jacket is in Fine- condition with very minor wear to the covers and edges. \"Denver: A Photographic Survey of the Metropolitan Area\" - First Edition, First Printing published by Colorado Associated University Press in cooperation with the State Historical Society of Colorado in 1977. Measuring approximately 10.5 x 9 inches and containing 93 black and white photographs, the book is bound in photographically illustrated wrappers. Both the book and wrappers are in FINE condition. \"What We Bought: The New World, Scenes from the Denver Metropolitan Area 1970-1974\" - First Edition, First Printing published by Stiftung Niedersachen, Germany in 1995. Measuring approximately 9 x 8 inches and containing 193 black and white photographs, the book is bound in cloth boards in a photographically illustrated dust jacket. Both the book and dust jacket are in FINE condition with the dust jacket evidencing the typical dulling that accompanies this type of coated cover stock. From the New York Times, \"The most literate and eloquent photographer of our time.(Adams refuses) to accept a simplistic view of the West as either a pristine, prelapsarian collection of natural wonders . or a land ripe for unlimited economic development.\" From Aperture, \"Objective and direct, Adams\'s photographs unsentimentally depict a despoiled landscape washed in the intense Colorado sunlight .. his work stands alongside Walker Evans\'s American Photographs, Robert Frank\'s The Americans, and Stephen Shore\'s Uncommon Places in the pantheon of landmark projects on American culture and society.\"

(Märchen) - Schneewittchen bei den sieben Zwergen.

Um 1970.. .

Lugd. Batava Matheseos Professoris, Nunc demum ab eodem diligenter recognita, locupletioribus Commentariis instructa, multisque egregiis accessionibus, tam ad uberiorem explicationem, quàm ad ampliandam hujus Geometriæ excellentiam facientibus, exornata. Editio secunda, multis accessionibus exornata, & plus alterâ sui parte adaucta.Amsterdam: Elzevir, 1659-1661.

A fine copy of van Schooten's important second edition of the Geometria, Descartes's magnum opus (DSB), and one of the key texts in the history of mathematics. Descartes' "application of modern algebraic arithmetic to ancient geometry created the analytical geometry which was the basis of the post-Euclidean development of that science" (PMM). It "rendered possible the later achievements of seventeenth-century mathematical physics" (M. B. Hall, Nature and nature's laws (1970), p. 91). "The mathematical community learned about the wealth of Descartes's new ideas through the works of van Schooten ... In the second edition the commentaries were enlarged, and van Schooten included the work by his students van Heuraet, Hudde, Huygens and de Witt. This edition served as the basic textbook for the generation that, in the last quarter of the century, took the lead in introducing differential and integral calculus" (Jahnke). Newton, in particular learnt his Descartes from this edition: "There can be no doubt that Newton read the Géométrie in Schooten's second Latin edition" (Whiteside, Papers I, p. 7, n17). Newton's own heavily annotated copy of this edition is held in Cambridge University Library (NQ.16.203)

The Géométrie first appeared (in French) as an appendix to Descartes' Discours de la Méthode (1637). Frans van Schooten (1615-60) first saw the Géométrie at Leiden, as Descartes had come there to supervise the printing of the Discours. Van Schooten published a Latin translation in 1649, adding his own extensive commentary. "The great success of Schooten's edition led him to prepare a second, much enlarged one in two volumes (1659-1661), which became the standard mathematical work of the period... In the second edition Schooten not only greatly expanded his commentary, but also added new material including an example of Fermat's extreme value and tangent method and a peculiar procedure for determining the center of gravity of parabolic segments. Since Fermat was not mentioned in the latter connection, it is likely that Schooten came upon the procedure independently, for he usually cited his sources very conscientiously. "In the first edition (1649) Schooten inserted Debeaune's rather insignificant Notae breves to the Géomérie. The commentary of the second edition contained valuable contributions by Huygens dealing with the intersections of a parabola with a circle and certain corollaries, as well as on an improved method of constructing tangents to the conchoid. Schooten also included longer contributions by his students: Jan Hudde's studies on equations and the rule of extreme values and Hendrik van Heuraet's rectification method.

"Volume II of the second edition of the Geometria (1661) commences with a reprinting of Schooten's introductory lectures [Principia matheseos vniversalis, sev Introductio ad geometriæ methodvm Renati Des Cartes]. This material is followed by Debeaune's work on the limits of roots of equations [De aequationum natura, constitutione, & limitibus opuscula duo] and then by de Witt's excellent tract on conic sections [Elementa curvarum linearum]. The volume concludes with a paper by Schooten's younger half brother Pieter on the algebraic discussion of Descartes' data [Tractatus de concinnandis demonstrationibus geometricis ex calculo algebraïco]. This edition shows the great effort Schooten devoted to the training of his students and to the dissemination of their findings" (DSB, under Schooten).

F. Guicciardini, Isaac Newton on Mathematical Certainty and Method (2009); H. N. Jahnke, A history of analysis, 2003; PMM 129 (for the 1637 edition).. 4to (196 x 153 mm), pp [xvi], 520, [2]; [xvi], 420, [4], with frontispiece portrait of Descartes in Vol. I with title printed in red and black and with woodcut printer's device, numerous diagrams in text. Autograph Musical Quotation Signed, small oblong 8vo, n.p., 1970

Copland draws a music stave on which he pens three bars of music he titles, "Fanfare (Third Symphony)," and signs with date, "Aaron Copland 1970." Copland incorporated musical themes from "Fanfare for the Common Man," into his Third Symphony. Matted in light tan board, ready for framing. The decade of the 1940s was arguably Copland's most productive, and it firmly established his worldwide fame. His two ballet scores for Rodeo (1942) and Appalachian Spring (1944) were huge successes. His pieces Lincoln Portrait and Fanfare for the Common Man have become patriotic standards. Also important was Copland's Third Symphony, composed in a two-year period from 1944 to 1946, his foremost symphony and the most popular American symphony of the 20th Century.
