        Original abstract oil painting

Paris,, 1970s. Oil and water on grey paper. Two sheets, each approx: 24 x 32 cm. Float mounted and framed together in a black wooden frame. Each sheet signed as Epfs. Durrell mounted an exhibition as a vehicle for one of his many alter egos, Oscar Epfs in Paris at the Librairie Marthe Nochy in 1970. In terms of pure commerce it was something of a failure: a mere handful of the works were sold. But Durrell apparently revelled in the failure. He was however quite serious about his painting, following Henry Miller in the pursuit, and continued making pictures until his death.

ALS: 2 original letters from Julia and Paul Child to Richard Gildenmeister, with an original photograph and several newspaper clippings

      - Two original letters from Julia Child, dated 1970 and 1976. The first, handwritten by Julia on stationary from the Barclay in Philadelphia and dated November 3rd (postmark indicates 1970), reads: "Dear Dick: Would that we were not so far away from you and Higbees, and from the Cleveland we saw so little of. Our warm welcome from all of you has made us sentimental about you, and we hope to come back again, stay longer, and feel that we can really have time to get acquainted. Please give our warmest remembrances to everyone, especially the Kordalski's, Strawbridges. Claudette, and all the good people in the book store. Our thanks to you, in particular, for first-class arrangements. Love from all of us to all of you. Paul + Julia Child". The second letter is typed on letterhead from the Ecole des Trois Gourmandes, dated April 2, 1976: "Dear Richard: We've just returned from 3 months in France, and I am enjoying your letter written I don't know when, but after we missed seeing you, to our most profound regret- remembering the good time we had with you some years ago. And now we most sincerely hope you are out of the ho0spital and perfectly all right- awful to be there having tests and not to know what the H. is wrong. We pray all is fine. You said you wanted an autographed book, so I am enclosing one of our paste-on slips, signed by both of us, that you can put in your copy. All is fine here with us, and spring is very slowly poking her lovely head out of the ground in the form of crocuses. Take good care of yourself, and congratulations on your new big job! Affectionately, Mrs. Paul Child". The letter is signed, simply, "Julia", and the mentioned paste-on slip is also included, a printed plate with a small illustration, inscribed in Julia's writing, "Bon Appetit- and all the best to Richard Gildenmeister", and is signed by both Julia and Paul. Included with this lot are a series of newspaper articles about Child, and an original 8 x 10 glossy silver gelatin photograph of Julia Child and Richard Gildenmeister at a book signing. Richard Gildenmeister is a renowned book dealer who maintained friendly correspondence with many prominent writers and celebrities through the late 20th century. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

NORTHWEST COAST HAISLA [NORTHERN KWAKIUTL] INDIAN HAND CARVED LARGE YELLOW CEDAR TOTEM POLE.

Circa 1950. 1970 - The pole measures about 17" tall x 4 1/2" thick on a 1 1/2" high base. The totem is carved by master Haisla carver Henry Venn Robertson and was done in circa 1950. This totem is also hand-painted by Robertson. This is one of the few hand-painted totems done by Robertson as he discontinued the practice of painting in about 1970. Henry Robertson (b1932 - ) is one of the finest totem carvers around, and began carving at age 10 under the direction of his father, Gordon Robertson. Henry's traditional name is Ga-ba-baawk, which means Ten Ravens in English. In the many years that he has been carving wood, he has had many exhibitions in galleries throughout Canada and the United States. He has carved many smaller carvings and smaller totems and feasting bowls, but enjoys especially carving large, full scale totem poles. This totem features very finely sculpted imagery of a large bear-like creature in a green, black, and maroon face with mouth open and showing individually carved teeth. His arms are wrapped around a human-like creature with the face painted in green, black, and maroon, the body in maroon with black finger and toe nails. The claws and feet of the bear-like creature are also painted in black. The totem is signed in pencil on the back, "Henry Robertson, Kemano, B.C." Henry's work, although never widely promoted commercially has always had a strong following, and his classic carving style and fine attention to detail ranks among the very best of carvings anywhere. A fine totem pole with no flaws and one of the few hand-painted examples of the carver's work. [Attributes: Signed Copy]
