Dampstaining to back of bottom of dustwrapper (not evident from front). Dustwrapper shows one 1/3" closed tear to top of front panel and scuffing to top of spine. Overall, the book and purple dustwrapper show as "tight and clean" (especially in the mylar protector). Might be a printer's copy, because it has technical information on type-setting written on the ffep. in pencil. A very respectable copy at a "respectable" price. This is an immensely charming little example of the imaginative and usually whimsical design work of Philip Smith (b. 1928), the individual generally recognized as the foremost English bookbinder of the last 50 years. Smith graduated from the Royal College of Art in London and subsequently did binding and conservation work with Sydney Cockerell (1906-87), one of the giants of 20th century fine binding and book conservation. A past president of Designer Bookbinders (1977-79) as well as a respected author, Smith is a pioneer in the field. Since about 1959, he has consistently explored the potential of the physical form of the book as an alternative art medium. He has added several new terms to the vocabulary of bookbinding and has been awarded patents for inventions both visual and functional; his innovations in structural and visual design are now applied by an ever growing number of bookbinders. Our artist, David Hockney (b.1937), is the celebrated English painter, draughtsman, printmaker, stage designer, and photographer. An important contributor to the Pop Art movement of the 1960s, he is considered one of the most influential British artists of the 20th century.

Suite sur un japon pour un livre qui n'existe pas. 10 incisioni a puntasecca, acquaforte e acquatinta, numerate, firmate e datate su carta Giappone: cm 8x6,5 - 11,8x11,3 - 7,2x6,4 - 6x10,5 - 7x6,3 - 5,5x5 - 7x6,4 - 6,7x11 - 18x12 - 8,1x5,7 (Foglio cm 23x15,8) La collaborazione tra l'artista danese Asger Jorn (Vejrum 1914 - Aarhus 1973) e l'editore francese Georges Visat (Foce, Corsica 1910 - Arzacq 2001) fu favorita dalla mediazione di Roberto Matta. Infatti Jorn, trovandosi a Parigi alla ricerca di un editore, si rivolse all'amico artista che gli fece il nome di Visat, con l'assicurazione che lo stampatore non avrebbe di sicuro deluso le sue aspettative. Matta aggiunse che per incontrare Visat bastava attenderlo alle 10 di ogni mattina presso il caffè accanto al suo atelier, al numero 13 di rue du Dragon. Una mattina Jorn si recò al caffè, ma non osando avvicinare l'editore, continuò a fissarlo fino a che Visat, sentendosi osservato, si avvicinò per primo all'Artista. Jorn gli affidò una serie di incisioni, parlandogli del suo desiderio di farne un'edizione. Di quella serie di 10 incisioni ne furono stampate solo 15 copie, che Visat raccolse in una cartelletta e propose di chiamare "Suitesurunjaponpourunlivrequin'existepas". Il testo infatti sarebbe stato pensato ed organizzato in un incontro successivo presso l'Atelier Visat, appuntamento che si realizzò soltanto un anno dopo. Ne nacque però un libro del tutto nuovo, "Entrée de secours", con 9 diverse opere grafiche, stampato in 100 esemplari nel 1971. (informazioni in parte fornite da Yannick Minous Visat). Ogni cartella è accompagnata da un disco fuori commercio del concerto di Luigi Nono, "Y entonces comprendido" dai testi del poema, pubblicato da Ricordi di Milano Carlos Franqui negli anni 50, con grandi sacrifici, riuscì a frequentare l'università. Aderì poi al Partito Comunista cubano e lavorò nella clandestinità organizzando manifestazioni e insurrezioni. E' stato direttore del periodico clandestino "Revolucion" e capo della sezione propaganda del comitato rivoluzionario. Dopo la vittoria della rivoluzione tuttavia, non partecipò al governo di Fidel Castro e l'anno dopo la morte di Ghevara (1967) ruppe i contatti con il regime di Castro e andò in esilio in Europa, ed in particolare in Italia dove è stato attivo come critico d'arte, scrittore e poeta. Il libro nacque con l'intento di raccogliere fondi per aiutare Franqui durante il suo esilio italiano. Carta Filicarta. Le litografie di Calder e Mirò sono state stampate su torchio a mano dalla Arte-Adrien Maeght di Parigi; quella di Jorn su torchio da Clot, Bramsen e Georges di Parigi; quella di Vedova è stata stampata nel suo laboratorio di Venezia [Jentsch, 1993]

Handset, printed, decorated, and illuminated by Angelo. A magnificent and scarce production. Four page prospectus and order form laid in.

        The Street Wall Journal - Vol.1, Nos.1-3

      Committee to Defend the Panther 21, New York 1970 - Set of "wall newspaper"-style broadsides produced by the Committee to Defend the Panther 21, the title (used also by the unafiliated S.D.S. journal) intentionally used to reference the paper's ideological opposite, The Wall Street Journal. The committee was formed in early 1970, comprised of a mixed group of CPUSA members and sympathizers, assorted socialists and left-liberals, with the aim of raising funds for the defense of 21 members of the Black Panther Party. "The Panther 21," as they came to be called, were charged "with a conspiracy to murder New York City policemen and to dynamite a variety of sites ranging from Abercrombie & Fitch to the Bronx Botanical Gardens." The set is comprised of three broadsides (apparently all published), which were distributed largely on the Campus of Columbia University during mid-May, 1970: a) "Why We Strike" (May 13, 1970), b) "Toward A General Strike" (May 15, 1970), and c) "The Panthers: History as Repression.Repression as History" (May 21, 1970). The message is two-fold: to prompt students and workers to go on strike in protest of the U.S. expansion into Vietam, Cambodia and Laos, and to take a stand against the oppression of Black Panther Party members, seeking the release of political prisoners like Bobby Seale. Rare; we find no copies available for sale in the trade (2014); 2 copies for Vol.1, No.3 in the auction record (Bonham's, 2014 & Swann, 2012). All three broadsides unlisted in OCLC, though we find an example of Vol.1, No.1 at the Victoria & Albert Museum, and another unspecified example in Harvard's collection of Black Panther ephemera. A2. Brown cloth covered boards with gilt lettering on spine. Two small square marks from tape (slight darkening and residue) on ends of front cover, and two on back cover. Text block is bright and tight. Supplemented with several B / W photographic illustrations through out. In black and red dust jacket (without the gold Governors General stamp seen on the later state). Jacket has some mild wear and very light chipping at edges and spine. Included with the book are two pamphlets for a play of the book put on by the Tarragon Theatre in Toronto in 1989. A true first edition (very rare in hardcover, especially in this condition). The first book by the famous Canadian author, poet, filmmaker and editor which won the Governor Generals award for poetry and describes the factual and fictional life of the notorious outlaw.         Photographie originale] Deux portraits photographiques "inconnus" et "ratés" d'Ezra Pound à Venise, circa 1970, par Jean-Michel Folon

      1970 - Deux tirages gélatino-argentiques d'époque, tous deux avec cachets et mentions variées de l'hebdomadaire "L'Express". 27 x 20,5 cm pour le premier, 29,5 cm x 24 cm pour le second, celui-ci avec des trais au crayon rouge pour son recadrage dans "L'Express". Les deux portraits ont été publiés, comme en attestent les divers tampons, dans "L'Express" du 4 décembre 1972 (n° 1117), le premier p. 154, le second p. 155, recadré. Dans le même numéro figurait également un troisième portrait de Pound par Folon, debout et tête levée, dont nous n'avons pas trouvé de tirage (mais connaissons le négatif). Ces trois photos, qui à notre connaissance n'ont pas été publiées ailleurs, étaient accompagnées d'un joli texte de Folon intitulé "Le spectre de Pound" qui explique comment il a pris ces clichés. Nous le retranscrivons intégralement : "Nous somme entrés dans un jardin très beau. Avec ses cheveux tellement blancs, son long corps maigre, il ressemblait à un spectre. Mon ami Fulvio Roiter, le photographe vénitien, avait été chargé d'un reportage. Moi, je regardais ce mort-vivant, dans une lumière inoubliable. Je me rappelle de la lumière, comme dans les aquarelles de Turner sur Venise. Je voulais le lui dire. Mais il paraissait tellement loin de ce monde-ci. Parfois, le déclic de l'appareil de Fulvio rompait le silence. Le temps s''était arrêté. J'ai dit à Mme Pound que c'était une situation étrange : est-ce que son mari était vraiment absent de tout ce qui se passait autour de lui ? "Vous pensez que vous le dérangez, mais ne vous y trompez pas. Au fond, il sait l'impression qu'il donne, il sait qu'il est beau." Nous nous sommes promenés dans le jardin. J'ai pris, moi aussi, quelques photos, il semblait qu'après tout ce soit une chose à faire. Et Ezra Pound a levé la tête. J'ai compris en un instant qu'il était complètement lucide. Son oeil de rapace m'a transpercé. Difficile d'oublier cette petite boule noire d'acier qu'il avait au fond de l'orbite, et qui vous jugeait. Nous sommes partis. Le film s'est mal enroulé dans l'appareil. Les images se sont superposées. Comme si son univers mental l'avait emporté sur son apparence physique. Mais il ne pouvait en être autrement avec Ezra Pound." Deux très rares photos du grand poète moderniste au crépuscule de sa vie. Ces tirages sont tous deux très probablement uniques et constituent un document exceptionnel. (Nous joindrons les photocopies d'après microfiche des pages de l'Express ou ces images apparaissent.)

Brilliant flipbook, featuring 3 models, in 12 layers of dress, nudity and hairstyles, with thousands of possible combinations. "Trois filles ensorcelantes!!! habillez-lez ou dŽshabillez-les! selon vos gožt, votre humeur, au grŽ de votre fantaisie. 26568 combinaisons possible." Incredible. In Bertolotti where he states: "While leafing through Erotoscope, a ring-bound photography book by the advertizing photographer Jean-Claude Peretz, the reader can amuse himself by putting different clothes and accessories from various eras onto the naked bodies of three delighful models." And you can't say fairer than that.

      [San Francisco]: (Nocturnal Dream Shows). [circa 1970]. Lithographic poster. Designed by John Flowers, printed in purple and gold on light rose-colored paper. Measures approximately 17.5" x 11". Neatly tipped-in at the corner edges into a mat frame. A fine copy. A beautifully printed poster advertisement from the Cockettes legendary series of midnight shows given at the Palace Theater in North Beach, San Francisco. A psychedelic drag queen troupe founded by Hibiscus (George Harris), the Cockettes performed outrageous parodies of show tunes, and much else. Breaking many social, cultural, and sexual boundaries along the way, they inspired the glitter rock-era of David Bowie, Elton John, The New York Dolls, and filmmaker John Waters. A scarce survivor. .
