        Mister Freedom

Paris: Eric Losfeld Editeur. 1970. First. First edition. Small folio. Glazed pictorial boards. Text in French. Some chipping and wear to spine ends, bumped cover corners, else very good. Issued without dustwrapper. Book of photographer Klein's bizarre 1969 satiric film Mr. Freedom starring John Abbey (the American businessman in Jacques Tati's Play Time) as the title character, a violent and fascist American superhero, Donald Pleasance as his boss, and also with Delphine Seyrig and Philippe Noiret. Warmly Inscribed by Klein to French philosopher and sociologist Edgar Morin. Morin, an internationally recognized expert on both politics and mass communication, was at the time also a preeminent observer of the French student revolts. An interesting association -- given Morin's wide range of interests and experience his reaction to Klein's film would be telling. .

[San Francisco]: (Nocturnal Dream Shows). [circa 1970]. Lithographic poster. Designed by John Flowers, printed in purple and gold on light rose-colored paper. Measures approximately 17.5" x 11". Neatly tipped-in at the corner edges into a mat frame. A fine copy. A beautifully printed poster advertisement from the Cockettes legendary series of midnight shows given at the Palace Theater in North Beach, San Francisco. A psychedelic drag queen troupe founded by Hibiscus (George Harris), the Cockettes performed outrageous parodies of show tunes, and much else. Breaking many social, cultural, and sexual boundaries along the way, they inspired the glitter rock-era of David Bowie, Elton John, The New York Dolls, and filmmaker John Waters. A scarce survivor. .

        California Trip

New York: Grossman Publishers, 1970. Prima edizione (First edition, first printing). broch. Ottimo (Fine). 8vo (cm 28x35,5). Introduction by Dennis Stock. 99 photographs in black and white. From the introduction: "Every idea that Western man explores in his pursuit of the best of all possible worlds will be searched at the head lab -California. Technological and spiritual quests vibrate throughout the state, intermingling, often creating the ethereal. It is from this freewheeling potpourri of search that the momentary ensembles in space spring, presenting to the photographer his surrealistic image. However, to the Californians it is all so ordinary, almost mundane. The sensibility of these conditioned victims is where it is all at, right, left, up and down. Our future is being determined in the lab out West. There, a recent trip blew my mind across this state of being, as I collected images along the way to remember the transient quality of the Big Trip Nel 1968 Dennis Stock percorse in lungo e in largo la West Coast californiana, documentando il mondo degli hippies e della controcultura.
