        Sometimes a Great Notion

Universal City: Universal Studios. 1970. Gay's screenplay based on Kesey's second novel, after One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest, but his first novel to be brought to the screen. The novel concerns the Stamper family, an independent, sometimes ornery group of Oregon loggers. The film was directed by Paul Newman and starred Newman, Henry Fonda and Lee Remick, and it has fallen into undeserved obscurity: it was nominated for two Academy Awards and many consider it one of the last great performances of Fonda's career. This is labeled "Second Draft Screenplay," dated by hand February 10, 1970, with the name of legendary Hollywood editor Dede Allen written on the front cover (Allen is not credited on the film). Bradbound in studio wrappers; a bit dusty, but near fine. First Edition. Softcover.

A Sense of Where You Are

New York: Bantam Books,, 1970. A Profile of William Warren Bradley. Twelvemo (175 × 100). Bound in near-contemporary black boards, titles to spine gilt, white endpapers. 26 black and white photographs. A fine copy. A specially bound copy of the Bantam paperback edition, inscribed by an outraged McPhee on the advertisement page to the bookseller Ralph Sipper: "Ralph - I took the cover off this paperback and had it bound in this way because Bantam slipped a cover picture of Bill in a Knicks uniform onto this late printing without my knowledge. The book is about Bill as a college player, period. The new cover was a shame. Yours for truth in publishing, John." This copy is also signed by McPhee and Bill Bradley on the title page. Bill Bradley was a hall-of-fame basketball player, who later went on to run for the Democratic Party nomination for Presidential Candidate in 2000. In this book, first published in 1965, McPhee profiles Bradley during his senior year at Princeton University. An fascinating book, with a highly entertaining inscription.

[Hand-lettered Broadside]: 99% of the Blackman in the United States of North America are the Israelites... Jews are not the Israelites nor Their Kin. Children of the Devil Cainites. Eve and the Devil Their Parents. The United States and the Jews Are Killing Black Brothers by the Millions in Africa and Holy Land ... Join Al-Islam ... The Man Will Rule ... Get with the Sickle ... Babylon is Falling ... Sign of the Devil the Cross Means Death to All Blacks

[Circa 1970]. Handmade poster on a large sheet of paper measuring 40" x 18" (101 x 46cm). Old folds, remnants of masking tape at the extremities where the broadside was posted, a bit rough around the edges, overall good. A somewhat incoherent screed that apparently reflects race-based hatred against Jews aimed at stirring up African-Americans. While we are not aware of who made this, or where it was originally posted, it remains a compelling artifact of a time when racial and religious bitterness were open to all and commensurately unpredictable. .

The Andersonville Trial Rehearsal Script [with:] The Andersonville Trial [television script], plus associated items

New York, 9 november 1959 and feb.-april 1970 - Two highly important scripts, the first for the original Broadway stage production, and the second for the 1970 television production, representing variant texts. These scripts are of special note, as they belonged to George C. Scott, who played the role of Lt. Col. Chipman in the six month run of the Broadway stage production, and directed the television production, which starred Martin Sheen, William Shatner, Richard Basehart, et al. The stage script ([3],57,39 leaves, amended by a number of revised typescript inserts) bears Scott's annotations in pencil associated with his lines, as well as revisions in other dialogue. The television script (53,28,50,2, leaves) marks a substantial revision of the play, including the expansion of it into three acts, the last with two scenes. It bears annotations throughout by Scott and others made in the course of the production. A number of leaves are present as revises on yellow stock, and inserted in front is a list of tape editing notes, and a phone message to Scott, and a memo to him about wardrobe issues. Also present is a matted 18 x 11.5cm pencil portrait of Scott in his role as Chipman in the Broadway production, dated "New York 1959" and signed "Wm. Scharf," and an 8x10 b&w glossy of Scott, Shattner and Basehart on the set of the 1970 production 2 vols., 4to. Mimeographed, carbon and original typescript. The former bolt-bound in gilt-lettered steno service wrappers, the latter ring bound in loose-leaf binder. Very good [Attributes: Signed Copy; Soft Cover]

MARDI GRAS IN NEW ORLEANS: A Photographic Essay Foreword by David Mynders Symthe

Privately Printed: Self-published. 1970. First edition, first printing. Original photo-illustrated stapled wrappers. An excellent near fine copy with only light rubbing to the binding extremities. Clean and bright throughout. A superb and little known photographic work capturing the crowds at the New Orleans Mardi Gras. The photographer ignores the floats and parade, instead aiming his lens at the spectators, capturing the real spirit of this festival as well as providing a remarkable, if not unique documentation of the inhabitants of one of America's most glittering cities. Unaccountably scarce. OCLC records just one copy of this edition at the University of New Orleans and a copy of a 1972 edition at Michigan State University Libraries.
