Between Two Ages: America's Role in the Technetronic Era

New York Viking Adult 1970. 334 pages including index. "The thrust of this challenging book is that America is the first society to move beyond the industrial age into the new "technetronic" era, and that this transition affects directly both our international and our domestic problems. Part 1 describes the impact of the scientific revolution on world affairs in general and on the Third World in particular, and exposes the ambiguous position of its principal disseminators, the US. Part 2 examines how this has effected the content, style, and format of man's political outlook on his global reality. Part 3 assesses the contemporary relevance of communism to the problems of modernity. Part 4 focuses upon the US, a society that is both a social pioneer and a guinea pig for mankind, and examines the crisis of American institutions and values during the current transition - as well as the challenge posed by the New Left. Part 5 outlines in broad terms the general direction the US might take in order to make an effective response to its foreign and domestic dilemmas." - from dust jacket (not included). "This is one of the most original books on political and social thought to appear in recent years. The author projects the impact of technology and electronics on the political and social values of the United States, the Soviet Union and other 'post-industrial' states. As a study of global society in transition, this seminal work is bound to elicit major controversy and will be difficult to ignore." - Foreign Affairs. Bit of soiling to fore-edge else clean and unmarked with light wear. A quality copy. First Edition Hard Cover 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall; First Edition. VG

ALTARS [the Complete Working Manuscript of Artist Robert LaVigne]

NYC 1970 - A complete manuscript of Clayton Eshleman's ALTARS, with the entire working file of the Artist, Robert LaVigne. An original carbon typescript dated 1970 of "Altars," about 102pp, on blue onion skin. Title page inscribed "This copy for Robt. LaVigne," across the top in large red lettering, then, across the bottom, "from his friend Clayton July 4/1970," again in large red lettering. In Robert LaVigne's hand; "Nov 8: color-[symbol] full color/6/[symbol] black & white," all in pencil; then at a later date [about 1980] "illuminated with/drawings by/Robert LaVigne," in fountain pen. Typed on one side only and inserted into a stiff orange clamp type of binder, with a label pasted on the front, and "ALTARS" in red lettering, in Eshleman's hand. Two leaves folded and inserted into the binder; one leaf on white bond paper [the poem WAND]. Numerous corrections in the text, in Eshleman's hand. Several dozen leaves are annotated and illuminated by LaVigne, mostly in multiple colors of pencil. Includes LaVigne's color pencil drawing of the book cover on letter size paper; a color pencil drawing for the interior, of a crab, on art paper, 6.75"x6.75"+/-, signed in full; a printed New York Astrology Service blank with Lavigne's notations, and dated "1:25 A.M. Oct 19, 1970/ NYC Begin Altars," in pencil. Along with: a legal pad sheet with sketches and astrological signs associated with each of the poems in ALTARS; four letter size sheets of the designs for each poem along with astrological symbols and a meticulously detailed graph of the schematic design which incorporates the poem titles and the astrological symbols. Along with: 26 pieces varying in size, of sketches, schematics and ideas, all in LaVigne's hand. Along with: One hand written postcard postmarked July 29, 1970 from Eshleman to LaVigne, requesting LaVigne to send drawings for "Altars" to Black Sparrow. Along with: Eight [mostly typed] letters from Eshleman to LaVigne, requesting delivery of the drawings for "Altars," with emphasis on the expectations of Black Sparrow Press; that publication will be delayed until drawings are delivered; partial payment of 50 dollars for the drawings should have been received by LaVigne; pleadings for the drawings; insertion of the poem "The Wand" into the manuscript [this is the bond paper leaf];and finally, since the drawings are not to be forthcoming, a holograph note dated May 28, 1971; "Robert -/Would you please have the/ decency to send J. M./ a check or money order for the $50.00/ he advanced you on the artwork/ you never came thru with for ALTARS?// I am being charged for it./ Clayton". Six envelopes are included, 5 of which are in Eshleman's hand. Most of the letters have comments by Eshleman in his hand, and two of the letters are entirely hand written. Along with: Four typed letters on Black Sparrow Press letterhead to LaVigne, the first dated August 19, 1970, the last, October 12, 1971. The earliest letter discusses LaVigne's interest in providing a cover and interior drawings for the ATARS project. The second letter advances $50 of the $100 agreed to for the drawings. The third letter acknowledges that the drawings will not be forthcoming, and that in lieu of return of the $50 to Black Sparrow, that LaVigne send the drawings completed. The fourth letter is very cordial and offers to work on another project in the future [at this time it is apparent the book has been published without LaVigne's work]; wishes the best to LaVigne who will be teaching at Cal Arts for a year. Three of the letters have the Black Sparrow envelopes. Condition varies from fine to good; some of the letters and envelopes are wrinkled, but none are torn or have serious defects. Photos available.

        Das Grosse Abenteuer

Munich/Berlin: Rixdorfer Drucke, 1970. Quarto. 55 pp., frenchfold. One of 300 copies signed by the four artist-printers of the press. A wild "adventure" illustrated with eight four-color, full-page woodcuts and 66 smaller black and white woodcuts. The front cover has a compass mounted in the center to "guide" the reader through the book. In cloth-backed green printed boards. Boards show slight fading as well as a faint pen mark to upper board, else a fine copy in plain cardboard slipcase. The Werkstatt Rixdorfer is one of the most idiosyncratic of the post-war German presses, creating books with bold illustrations but a humorous sensibility. (Typen 127-12).

Liberated Guardian [run of 36 issues, 1970-73]

New York: Liberated Guardian Worker's Collective, 1970-1973. The Liberated Guardian was a radical left publication that originally started in the Spring of 1970, when a group of Guardian workers who went on strike and decided to start a new, collectively-run paper. There were allegations of sexism and exploitation, as well as strong political differences between the the offended faction and the mother publication. Guardian offices were seized in the dispute, and the front page of the premiere issue (the "Liberation Issue") features a large photograph of the staff standing in the fire escapes waving clenched fists. As was the case with many similar newspapers, publication was irregular, due to disputes, infighting, and ideological differences. The Liberated Guardian took a strong, armed-struggle line, as evidenced by the variety of domestic and international causes it supported and covered: Black Panthers, the Castro regime, struggles in Indo-China, North Africa, and the Chinese cultural revolution, et al. Institutional holdings are scattered and spotty according to OCLC; this run, lacking (by our estimation) only a handful of issues, is the most complete that we have seen. Tabloid (43.5cm). A cohesive run of 36 issues, dated from April 1970 - February 1973, with the sequence running as follows: Vol.1, Nos.1-3, 6-9, 11-14, 16-21; Vol.2, Nos.1-11; Vol.3, Nos.1-8. Newsprint, with illustrated covers in black, white, and color; illus. Old fold, mailing label, and bulk rate slug to Vol.1, No.1, though all remaining issues are unfolded; occasional toning or light wear to text edges, and some trivial spine wear to a handful of issues; Vol.3, No.8 has paper loss to upper left corner from p.3-16; first and last issues Very Good+, with the remainder of the run being Near Fine copies.

. np: nd (ca. 1970?). Side-stapled olive construction paper wraps. Photomechanically duplicated from typescript (probably mimeograph, but possibly bad photo offset). Wrappers edge-worn and faded with some creasing. Light wear overall. Rear wrapper almost detached, else very good. 133pp. “I am writing down my reminiscences in the hope that a truthful account of the events experienced by my generation, describing the background and the ideas prevailing at that time, may be of interest and possibly of help, to my descendants.” An essentially unpublished memoir about the Russian Revolution told from the point-of-view of the young daughter of an aristocratic family. The author later emigrated and worked as a translator in the U.S. Presumably printed in tiny quantities for private circulation only. Detailed, unsentimental, and honest: a revealing document.
