Aritikulation [1958]. Hörpartitur von Rainer Wehinger. Elektronische Musik. Electric Musik

Schott. ED 6378-10, Mainz 1970 - Offset in 4 colors. Presentation copy. Inscribed and dated by Ligeti in 1998. 100 × 70 cm. Ligeti composed Artikulation in 1958, this is one of the only two electric pieces he composed before returning back to the instrumental medium. Ligeti provides this explanation for his music: "The piece is called Artikulation because in this sense an artificial language is articulated: question and answer, high and low voices, polyglot speaking and interruptions, impulsive outbreaks and humour, charring and whispering". Although the piece had a score by Ligeti, twelve years after it was composed, Rainer Wehinger created this "Hörpartitur" or aural score, a more "user friendly" version. It focuses on the main sonic characteristics: uses a timeline measured in seconds; shapes and colors instead of the notes on a staff; different colors that represent variations in timbre and pitch; dots that are standing for impulses and combs for noise. György Ligeti (1923-2006) was a Hungarian (Transylvanian) born composer. Studied at the Music Academy of Cluj and Budapest. After his graduation he started to collect folk music in Romania and taught composing and counterpointing at the Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He left Hungary after the revolution in 1956, and started to work at the radio station in Cologne where he made acquaintance with Karlheinz Stockhausen who had a major influence on his art. In 1959 settled down in Vienna and became citizen in 1967. Taught at the Universities of Darmstadt, Stockholm, Stanford and Hamburg. Under the influence of Stockhausen he started to compose music for electronic instruments like Artikulation and Atmosphères. This gave him reputation in the Western European music scene. After these works he gave up composing electronic music but his experiences with such instruments made and effect on his later compositions. His music could be characterized as a mixture of Western avant-garde music and Hungarian folk music combined with sense of humour and absurd. Ligeti's pieces (Lontano, Lux Aeterna, Requiem) were used as film music - among others - in Stanley Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey, The Shining and Eyes Wide Shut also in Martin Scorsese's Shutter Island. Creases to edges, otherwise a fine copy. Offset in 4 colors. Presentation copy. Inscribed and dated by Ligeti in 1998 [Attributes: Signed Copy]

Winter Insomnia [Rare Issue in White Wrappers, Inscribed]

(Santa Cruz): (Kayak). (1970). Carver's first regularly published book, a collection of poems, issued in an attractive edition of 1000 copies designed and printed by George Hitchcock and illustrated with prints by Robert McChesney. This is the issue in the rare white wrappers, the overwhelming majority having been issued in yellow wrappers. William Stull's Carver checklist said that three copies were known in the white wrappers. Since that checklist was published, we have seen three more copies in white wrappers, including this one, bringing the total number of known copies to six. Without knowing exactly how many white copies there were, we can say with assurance that this issue is exceedingly scarce; we've seen dozens, if not hundreds, of the issue in yellow wrappers. This copy is inscribed by Carver: "For Rush - with good wishes. Ray Carver. 3-3-83." Spine and edge sunning to covers; near fine. First Edition. Softcover.

Between Two Ages: America's Role in the Technetronic Era

New York: Viking Adult. Hardcover. 0670160415 334 pages including index. "The thrust of this challenging book is that America is the first society to move beyond the industrial age into the new "technetronic" era, and that this transition affects directly both our international and our domestic problems. Part 1 describes the impact of the scientific revolution on world affairs in general and on the Third World in particular, and exposes the ambiguous position of its principal disseminators, the US. Part 2 examines how this has effected the content, style, and format of man's political outlook on his global reality. Part 3 assesses the contemporary relevance of communism to the problems of modernity. Part 4 focuses upon the US, a society that is both a social pioneer and a guinea pig for mankind, and examines the crisis of American institutions and values during the current transition - as well as the challenge posed by the New Left. Part 5 outlines in broad terms the general direction the US might take in order to make an effective response to its foreign and domestic dilemmas." - from dust jacket (not included). "This is one of the most original books on political and social thought to appear in recent years. The author projects the impact of technology and electronics on the political and social values of the United States, the Soviet Union and other 'post-industrial' states. As a study of global society in transition, this seminal work is bound to elicit major controversy and will be difficult to ignore." - Foreign Affairs.         8 x 10 Art Portfolio [14 Sheets]

[New York: Jeanie Black and Ely Raman]. (1970-1972). Artist publication. A collection of 14 sheets, all fine, housed in a toned folder splitting at several of the folds, very good. A portfolio magazine created by photographer Jeanie Black and Fluxus artist Ely Raman, published over nine issues between 1970-1972. This issue includes a "wallpaper piece" by Black, a "stamp drawing" by Raman, six penciled drawings from Mel Perkarsky's Landscape series, an onionskin tracing by Wertheim, a double-sided "Real Money" piece from Dana W. Atchley, and a "found art" photo of two mannequins. Asked many years later about the publication, Raman commented: "I realize that our historical consciousness (or self-consciousness?) was notably absent. The issues were not numbered or dated, the contributions often not properly identified (or footnoted) and we did not include serious (academic) verbiage identifying what we were doing in the context of art. Too busy making art to write or talk about it." The lack of documentation, the generic title, and the seeming randomness of each issue makes finding other copies of the publication difficult. While there are several sets at institutions, individual issues are quite scarce in the trade. .

Jews in Russia and in the USSR - Historical Sketch

USA The Truth Seeker 1970. 322 pages. Translated from the first Russian edition. Contents include: Jews in the land of Kiev Russia and the Moscow State; The first Jews in Russia; The further growth rate of Jews in Russia; Politics of the Russian Government with regard to the Jewish question; How Jewish capital was created in Russia; The social structure of Russian Jewry; Jewish participation and their role in the cultural life of Russia; Jews in Russian literature and criticism; Jews - Russian lawyers; Russian Jewry at the beginning of the twentieth century; The Balis Affair; The Jewish question from February to October 1917; Jews in USSR; Personal-national autonomy; Thirty-year total; The war years; The post-war period; The state of Israel and the problem of double citizenship; Supplements I and II. Apparently the author self-published a first English edition in New York in 1967. This copy may be a later reprint as a small Truth Seeker address label has been placed over original text on the copyright page. Regardless, this copy appears to be circa 1970s or prior. Brown stains to lower portion of back cover modestly affect last three pages - text unaffected. Binding intact. Unmarked. A sound copy. Soft Cover 8vo - over 7?" - 9?" tall. Good
