Autograph letter signed ("(Satchmo) Louis Armstrong)") to Erich Kauffmann, [Corona, N.Y.] April 5,1970

1970. Five pages, in ink. Erich Kauffmann was the partner of trombonist Franz Schuritz who formulated the lip salve that Armstrong grew to depend on: "Dear Mr. Kauffmann: My dear friend I always be very happy when I get a letter from you. You and your dear family are Lucille (my wife) and my dear friends. We love you all very very much. We are very happy that we had the thrill to meet you - the family and the Boss Man, Mr. Franz Schuritz. Real fine family And a happy meeting for Lucille and I. We both talk about you all lots and lots of times. I am well again and feeling fine after a long good rest which was what I really needed after traveling so much in show business. My doctor demanded that I do it. Now I am happy that I did. And with attention of my dear Lucille - all is well - I am well and everything is beautiful again. And I promised that I will never work so hard. (Moms) Lucille that is my (love-pet name for her) she joins me in sending you all our love and the best of happiness always. I have also recorded my first record. I'll send one of them to you as soon as they are released. Already it's a big seller here in America. So you must stay happy. And keep making your very good Lip Salve (Anzatz Creme) Louis Armstrong Lip Salve. If no more than make it for me. I'll buy all that you can make. Anytime that you should have a batch of Louis Armstrong's Lip Salve on your hands - just send it on to me at my home. Tell me how much it is and I will gladly send you the money. Now do you understand? I am very serious about this - I live by your Lip Salve and I hope that I will never run out. So what ever amount of Lip Salve that you have in your possession, send it to me. C.O.D. No matter how much the cost. Please understand me when I say these words to you Mr. Kauffmann. I am very serious. I am sure that you will understand the SINCERITY when I speak to Dick Cavett, who is a smart and sincere man. And he was with me all the way and believed every word that I said concerning Mr. Franz Schuritz and that wonderful Lip Salve. God Bless you. Goodnight from (Satchmo) Louis Armstrong." With autograph envelope, return address: "Satchmo, 34-56 107 St, Corona, New York". All five pages are written on the backs of a Harper's Bazaar reprint: "Lose Weight, the Satchmo Way!" recommending Swiss Kriss. According to Jasen and Jones's "Black Bottom Stomp," Armstrong's daily regimen included "a daily dose of Swiss Kriss (an herbal laxative that he swore by), a few applications of the lip salve made for him by a German trombonist named Franz Schuritz, some red beans and rice -- when he could find them on a hotel menu -- and several marijuana cigarettes." According to his obituary in the New York Times (July 7, 1971), "Mr. Armstong's greatest [health] worry was chronic leukoplakia of the lips, what amounted to a tough corn that resulted from blowing his horn. He used a special, imported salve to sooth his lips. 'If you don't look out for your chops and pipes,' he said, 'you can't blow the horn and sing. Anything that'll get in my way doin' that, out it goes. That trumpet comes first, before anything, even my wife.'"

Beyond the Valley of the Dolls (Original German poster for the 1970 film)

Heidelberg, Germany: Winterdruck, 1970. Original West German A1 poster for the 1970 US film, "Beyond the Valley of the Dolls," here under its foreign release title, "Blumen ohne Duft." Based on an original story by Roger Ebert, who also helped write the screenplay. Three girls come to Hollywood to make it big with their rock band, "The Kelly Affair," stopping first to visit Kelly MacNamara's (1966 Playboy Playmate, Dolly Read) estranged aunt. Kelly's aunt introduces the band, comprised of Kelly (Read), Casey Anderson (1968 Playboy Playmate, Cynthia Myers), and Petronella Danforth (Marcia McBroom), to a flamboyant producer named Ronnie "Z-Man" Barzell (John LaZar), who changes their name to "The Carrie Nations" and has them perform at one of his orgiastic parties after a set by Strawberry Alarm Clock. Throughout the success of the new band, the girls use drugs and alcohol, attempt to maintain romantic relationships (even a lesbian tryst with Erica Gavin, director Meyer's "Vixen"), and find "Z-Man" to be a murderous transsexual. The film proved to be sexploitation and exploitation to its psychedelic limits at the time, was Meyer's biggest box-office draw to date, and gave the director a new audience: mainstream filmgoers in mainstream cinemas. Originally intended as a sequel to "Valley of the Dolls" (1967), with an original screenplay by Jacqueline Susann, Twentieth Century-Fox found the script unsatisfactory and sought new material. The film was released, as part of a settlement with Susann, with the disclaimer "This is not a sequel to VALLEY OF THE DOLLS." One of few X-rated films released by Twentieth Century-Fox, another being "Myra Breckenridge" (1970). Pam Grier got her start in this film, as an uncredited party attendant. Meyer regulars like Charles Napier, Lavelle Roby, and Haji, all make appearances. Set in Los Angeles. 23.5 x 32.75 inches (60 x 83 cm), rolled, on archival linen. Discreet restoration, else about Near Fine. Meyer, pp. 1023-1028. Weldon (1983), p. 54.

Liberated Guardian [run of 36 issues, 1970-73]

Liberated Guardian Worker's Collective 1970-1973, New York - The Liberated Guardian was a radical left publication that originally started in the Spring of 1970, when a group of Guardian workers who went on strike and decided to start a new, collectively-run paper. There were allegations of sexism and exploitation, as well as strong political differences between the the offended faction and the mother publication. Guardian offices were seized in the dispute, and the front page of the premiere issue (the "Liberation Issue") features a large photograph of the staff standing in the fire escapes waving clenched fists. As was the case with many similar newspapers, publication was irregular, due to disputes, infighting, and ideological differences. The Liberated Guardian took a strong, armed-struggle line, as evidenced by the variety of domestic and international causes it supported and covered: Black Panthers, the Castro regime, struggles in Indo-China, North Africa, and the Chinese cultural revolution, et al. Institutional holdings are scattered and spotty according to OCLC; this run, lacking (by our estimation) only a handful of issues, is the most complete that we have seen. Tabloid (43.5cm). A cohesive run of 36 issues, dated from April 1970 - February 1973, with the sequence running as follows: Vol.1, Nos.1-3, 6-9, 11-14, 16-21; Vol.2, Nos.1-11; Vol.3, Nos.1-8. Newsprint, with illustrated covers in black, white, and color; illus. Old fold, mailing label, and bulk rate slug to Vol.1, No.1, though all remaining issues are unfolded; occasional toning or light wear to text edges, and some trivial spine wear to a handful of issues; Vol.3, No.8 has paper loss to upper left corner from p.3-16; first and last issues Very Good+, with the remainder of the run being Near Fine copies.
