The twenty volumes, each with an accompanying portfolio, are organized by tribes and culture areas encompassing the Great Plains, Great Basin, Plateau Region, Southwest, California, Pacific Northwest, and Alaska. Hallelujah

1970. SHAHN, Ben. Hallelujah. Introduction by Bernarda Bryson Shahn. With 4 colour lithographs by Ben Shahn illustrating the 150th Psalm. Oblong folio, 415 x 440 mm, bound in original cloth, gilt, in a matching folding case. New York: Kennedy Graphics, [1970]. |~||~||~||~||~| One of 240 numbered copies. Signed by Shahn in the final lithographic stone at end under the Hebrew letters for the word "Hallelujah." Shahn's drawings for Hallelujah were completed just before his death, and represent his last completed work. They were originally intended to be a large scale mural for a Jewish community center in Rockville, Maryland. Based on the last majestic Psalm of the Old Testament, Shahn's "Hallelujah Suite" celebrates the music, musicians and musical instruments that stand out in the Psalm. Calligraphic Hebrew text is interworked into the Shahn lithograph images, which were skillfully printed by Mourlot Graphics Ltd. in yellow and black. The book remains a fitting culmination to Shahn's lifetime friendship with Mourlot, who also supplied an introductory letter. The text was printed by the Spiral Press. Fine copy. Prescott, The Complete Graphic Works of Ben Shahn 202-215.

Two months after arriving in Israel to avoid any legal problems which might arise in Miami, intending to become an Israeli citizen, Meyer Lansky tells his daughter that ?as long as I hear that you are well my desire for home is negative??

Autograph Letter Signed ?Dad,? one page, 8.5? x 10.75?. Herzlia, Israel, September 24, 1970. To Meyer Lansky?s daughter Sandra and her husband Vince Lombardo, with original mailing envelope addressed by Lansky, right front portion torn off. On verso of Sharon Hotels stationery. Lansky changed pens in the middle of the fourth line. Fine condition. In part, ?I?m happy to hear that you are all well. As long as I hear that you are well my desire for home is negative ... Up to date my friend from Technion College has been taking me on tours once a week ... Yesterday I drove to Tiberias. We went by Jordan Valley. We were close enough to hear the shooting. I got a good look at the Syrian border and the Hills that will be disputed if the peace talks ever get started...? He adds ?P.S. Sam Garfield checks don?t bother at present.? In the 1960s, Lansky had invested in real estate and oil projects of his old friend Sam Garfield and, according to an affidavit filed in Israel in December 1970, his annual income from the dividends was ?roughly $60,000 (before taxes).?Robert Lacey in ?Little Man: Meyer Lansky and the Gangster Life? (Boston: Little, Brown & Company, 1991) writes, ?In 1964, Meyer?s old friend Doc Stacher had avoided the worst consequences of a conviction for tax evasion by consenting to deportation and going to Israel to live. In July 1970, Meyer Lansky decided not to wait for the conviction ?" or anything else ... Lansky landed in Israel on July 27, 1970 ... He wanted to stay in Israel ?" and he wanted to live there not as a visitor, but as an Israeli citizen.?On December 7, 1970, Lansky requested Israeli citizenship under Israel?s Law of Return which gives any Jew the right to be granted Israeli citizenship. However, it denies citizenship to a Jew ?with a criminal past, likely to endanger the public welfare.? In March 1971, Lansky was charged with being involved in a conspiracy to skim from the Flamingo Hotel, his old Las Vegas venture with Bugsy Siegel. In May, Lansky?s U.S. passport was revoked and in September, his application for Israeli citizenship was denied. ?Meyer Lansky v. the State of Israel? was heard before the Israeli Supreme Court and on September 11, 1972, the court ruled unanimously against Lansky. After trying to find refuge outside the United States, on November 7, 1972, Meyer Lansky returned to Miami and was promptly arrested by FBI agents aboard the plane. In a 1988 interview with Robert Lacey, Anna Strasberg revealed that Meyer Lansky had phoned her husband, Lee Strasberg who was nominated for the 1975 Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for the role of Hyman Roth in ?The Godfather, Part II.? With her husband?s knowledge, Anna listened in on the extension. Lansky said, ?You did good.? Lee replied, ?Thank you. I tried.? Lansky added, almost with a sense of humor according to Anna, ?Now, why couldn?t you have made me more sympathetic? After all, I am a grandfather.?Victor Riesel, in his December 10, 1970, nationally syndicated column, ?Inside Labor,? reported that ?in the past month there have been two mass indictments ... on various charges. One ... is a 72-count securities fraud indictment and brings in some new names such as Vincent Lombardo, son-in-law of the shadowy financial wizard, Meyer Lansky...?

From the library of the British art dealer Edward Booth-Clibborn, who obtained it from the Lennons in January 1970 as part of the negotiations over a marketing deal between his company, First Run Ltd, and the US licensee appointed by Lennon and Ono, Consolidated Fine Arts Ltd. Booth-Clibborn's British company proposed to produce mass-market posters of the images, and signed a contract to that effect on 31 January 1970. The first exhibition of the lithographs, at the London Arts Gallery in New Bond Street in January 1970, was disrupted by Scotland Yard, who seized eight of the lithographs, and attempted to prosecute the gallery and its American owner Eugene Schuster on the grounds of obscenity. The lithographs were subsequently exhibited at Lee Nordness Galleries, New York City, in February 1970 (the catalogue of which is now a popular collectable). The New York opening night was a showy affair, packed with celebrities, including Salvador Dalí with his pet ocelot on a leash. The lithographs were on view in a specially created environment where spectators were asked to remove their shoes. Unfortunately, one of the shoeless spectators took surreptitious photographs of the lithographs and offered cheap reprints of the whole set for sale to the public the next day. The proposed publication deal between Consolidated Fine Arts and First Run was immediately cancelled, leaving Booth-Clibborn severely out of pocket, with only this suite to show for his investment of the then enormous fee of $24,200. The Bag One collection was drawn by Lennon in two bursts of artistic inspiration in 1969: half the images depict the public events of their marriage and honeymoon; the others are much more personal images showing Lennon and Ono in various sexual positions. Complete sets of any iteration of Bag One are rare in commerce, and no complete copy of the one of 45 portfolio has previously been offered for public sale.
