        The Bluest Eye.

New York: Holt Rinehart & Winston, 1970. First edition of the author's first book. Octavo, original half cloth. Signed by Toni Morrison on the title page. Fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket that shows a single tear. Set in Lorain, Ohio, in 1941, The Bluest Eye is something of an ensemble piece. The point of view is passed like a baton from one character to the next, with Morrison's own voice functioning as a kind of gold standard throughout. The focus, though, is on an 11-year-old black girl named Pecola Breedlove, whose entire family has been given a cosmetic cross to bear: You looked at them and wondered why they were so ugly; you looked closely and could not find the source. Then you realized that it came from conviction, their conviction. It was as though some mysterious all-knowing master had given each one a cloak of ugliness to wear, and they had each accepted it without question.... And they took the ugliness in their hands, threw it as a mantle over them, and went about the world with it. There are far uglier things in the world than, well, ugliness, and poor Pecola is subjected to most of them. She's spat upon, ridiculed, and ultimately raped and impregnated by her own father. No wonder she yearns to be the very opposite of what she is--yearns, in other words, to be a white child, possessed of the blondest hair and the bluest eye.

London: Amicus Productions, 1970. Draft script for the 1971 film. SIGNED by screenwriter Robert Bloch on the title page in 1982. Brief notations throughout in holograph ink and pencil. In one story, a writer is haunted by the psychopathic central character of his latest novel; in another, two friends are haunted by a wax figure that eerily resembles a woman they once knew; in the third story, a widower is neglectful and abusive to his daughter; and the final story, an actor starring in a vampire film buys a cloak from a mysterious shopkeeper, and the cloak begins to instill vampiric powers in the actor. Ingrid Pitt has a supporting role, as does Joss Ackland, Jonathan Lynn, and Joanna Lumley. Bloch wrote for several Amicus Productions film, including "The Skull" (1965), "The Psychopath" (1966), "The Deadly Bees" (1966), and "Asylum" (1972). Shot on location in England.         The Devils (Original screenplay for the 1971 film)

Burbank, CA: Warner Brothers, 1970. Revised Final draft script for the 1971 film. Studio File Copy, rubber-stamped on the front wrapper. Based on Aldous Huxley's 1952 novel, "The Devils of Loudon," and John Whiting's 1965 play. A power-hungry Cardinal in seventeenth-century France seeks control over the city of Loudun, but first needs to destroy Father Grandier (Reed), the priest protecting the city. The Cardinal and his entourage then frame the priest as a warlock in control of a satanic nunnery, including the sexually repressed Sister Jeanne (Redgrave). Set in France, shot on location in England. Derek Jarman provided the futuristic set designs, as well as production design, modeled after the sets in Fritz Lang's "Metropolis" (1927). Goldenrod studio wrappers, noted as FINAL on the front wrapper, rubber-stamped copy No. 20, and dated July 28, 1970. Distribution page present, with receipt intact. Title page present, dated July 28, 1970, with credits for screenwriter Russell, writer Huxley, and playwright Whiting, as well as the British production company, Russo Productions. 87 leaves, with last leaf of text numbered 83. Mechanically reproduced on eye-rest green stock, with blue revision pages throughout, dated variously between 9/24/70 and 9/28/70. Pages and wrapper Near Fine, bound internally with two gold brads. Lentz, p. 1032. Muir, p. 109. Weldon (1983), p. 181.

Gimme Shelter (Original maquette, proof, and final print of a variant poster for the 1970 film)

New York: Maysles Films, 1970. Archive including the paste-up maquette, proof, and final print of a photo-montage variant poster for the 1970 film, made for its premiere in New York City, and posted strictly on walls around the city. A poster design that, unlike the final one used, conveys the chaos, bleakness, and ultimately depressive air of the documentary, and one that arguably influenced Robert Frank's montage design for the cover of the band's next record, the seminal "Exile on Main Street." A legendary documentary, chronicling the final weeks of the Rolling Stones' 1969 US tour behind "Let It Bleed," culminating in the disastrous free concert at Altamont Speedway. A film associated with the Direct Cinema movement of the 1950s and 1960s, of which the Maysles were an important part, but just as much the beginning of a new style of "reactionary" documentary filmmaking, wherein the events being documented lead the film rather than the film being led by a preconceived idea. Maquette: 18 x 25.5 (46 x 65 cm), executed on art board with tape, with its original tissue overlay, with some browning to the tape, but not the maquette itself, Very Good to Near Fine overall. Proof: 9 x 15.5 inches (23 x 40 cm), glossy stock, rolled, with a few tiny stains at the top margin, easily Near Fine. Poster: 29.75 x 44.5 (75.5 x 114 cm), rolled, on archival linen, Fine. Criterion Collection 99.

        Tumbleweed Connection (Original poster)

London: DJM, 1970. Original UK promotional poster for the 1970 album. Elton John's third album, a breakthrough on every level. A concept album by a Brit based on American country and western and Americana themes--not something anyone would have expected to be a classic, and an album that didn't produce any of Elton's big singles. But it was the album that debuted the titanic union of Elton John and Bernie Taupin, and today stands as an incredibly unified piece of songcraft and production. 20 x 30 inches. On archival linen, rolled. Fine. Rolling Stone 500.

        Raging Bull. My Story.

Englewood Cliffs, N.J.: Prentice-Hall, Inc., , 1970. With Joseph Carter and Peter Savage. Octavo. Original red cloth, title gilt to spine, yellow ochre endpapers. In the dust jacket. 16 plates. A little bumped head and tail of the spine, pastedowns typically mottled red, but very good in slightly rubbed jacket, chafed at the folds, and with a few minor edge-splits and chips. First edition, later impression, letter code "T". This copy inscribed on the front free endpaper; "My Pal Russ, Keep punching. Jake La Motta". Colourful and controversial autobiography filmed to critical acclaim by Martin Scorsese, deservedly winning Robert de Niro his Best Actor Oscar in 1980. Arguably the most convincing fight film ever made. The film's dramatic and gore-splattered fight scenes did little to enhance La Motta's reputation as a pugilist, he was always thought to "fight with his face" despite his victory over Sugar Ray Robinson, and it certainly didn't present him as a fine human being - famously after the premiere he apologised to his long-since divorced wife Vikki, saying that he couldn't believe he'd been that bad, only to be told that "Honey, you were much worse." - but it did provide him with a post-fight career that most pugs would envy.

        [Two Country Music Photograph Albums]

Poughkeepsie, NY, [ca. 1970]. Near fine. Two albums, each oblong 4to. Measuring approximately 10.25?" x 7?" with 155 color photographs, loosely mounted rectos only in corners. Album 1: Green faux-leather covers, gilt title decoration to front, sting bound, 59 black paper leaves, each with two photographs recto mounted, 118 prints total; well preserved, near fine. Album 2: Ivory faux-leather covers, gilt title decoration to front 20 black paper leaves, 19 with recto mounted photographs, most two to a page, final leaf blank; crease through center of front cover, otherwise clean, contents near fine. A fantastic pair of albums capturing 1970 Poughkeepsie, NY area regional country music acts, venues and patrons. Prints almost entirely uniform in size, measuring approximately 3.5?" square, many date stamped outside the image area. The first album shows spots in and around Poughkeepsie, primarily the Brand X Corral bar on Rt. 94 in Vails Gate, NY. Acts include Gil Rogers (whose albums we suspect these were based on internal evidence), The Country Cousins, and Country Skyline. The second album follows Rogers down to West Virginia for his performance during the 1970 Eastern States Country Music Convention on the famed WWVA Jamboree in Wheeling?'s Capitol Theater. Rogers recorded a handful of honky-tonk singles in the early 1970?'s on the Stop label and enjoyed regional success as a performer for decades. These amateur images show the elaborate stage dress, music gear and social settings of Woodstock-era country music. That famed festival was held less than a year earlier and some 35 miles from where most of the images shown here were snapped, though one could be forgiven for guessing they were taken years and miles apart. An album that demonstrates how this blue collar form adhered to traditions and fans throughout the cultural sea changes of the late 1960s and early 70s, and a colorful portrait of a working regional musician.

Persepolis 3: The royal tombs and other monuments. University of Chicago. Oriental institute publications Volume LXX.

Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1970. XXIV, 174, 105 S. Tafeln. Mit Faltblättern. Großformat. Mit zahlr. Abb. Originalleinen mit Schutzumschlag. Aus der Bibliothek von Prof. Dr. Wolfram Kleiss, langjährigem Leiter der Außenstelle Teheran des Deutschen Archäologischen Instituts. Ecken bestossen, Umschlag defekt. - The third and final volume is linked with the preceding volumes mainly by the graphic and descriptive documentation of the tombs of the Achaemenid monarchs at Naqsh-i Rustam and Per-sepolis, by a study of the excavated Achaemenid Tower (\"Kacbah-i Zardusht\") at Naqsh-i Rustam, and by an appended review of tribute-bearers and throne-bearers depicted in the Persepolis reliefs. In Volume III, Naqsh-i Rustam rather than Persepolis is the focal site. In addition to the Achaemenid monu-ments, the volume records reliefs of pre-Achaemenid and Sasanian origin and the newly uncovered important inscriptions which Shapur I and the priest Kartir engraved on the Achaemenid Tower about eight hundred years after its construction. The third site referred to in Volume III is Naqsh-i Rajab, in the Persepolis plain. It is a natural recess at the foot of the Mountain of Mercy, adorned with Sasanian reliefs. Rock reliefs of the same era in other parts of Iran and in eastern Anatolia are also described. Our investigations in the Persepolis area included excavations and tests in two prehistoric mounds (Tall-i Bakun A and B), which had previously been examined by Herz-feld, and in the extensive city mound of Istakhr. Most of the objects uncovered by us at Istakhr represent the early centuries of Islam and are to be published apart from the earlier, mainly Achaemenid, remains presented in the Persepolis volumes. So far, only the coins have been published in final form. Versandkostenfreie Lieferung

Photograph signed. Head of a Dancer

1970 - JACOBI, Lotte. Photograph signed. Head of a Dancer. No place, circa 1970. Gelatin silver print (measures 11 by 14 inches), signed on print recto. Matted and framed, entire piece measures 17 by 19 inches. $7800.Large gelatin silver print of Jacobi’s famous 1929 portrait of dancer Niura Norskaya, a “powerful and classic example” of that artistry that ranks Jacobi “among the foremost portrait photographers” (Otto Steinert), this 11 by 14-inch print signed by Jacobi in her customary penciled hand on the lower corner.“Berlin in the 20s was a dazzling cultural capital… The brilliance of this world is reflected in Lotte Jacobi’s photographs” (Fasanelli, Lotte Jacobi). At this time Berlin “was the center of modern dance, and Jacobi photographed many of the city’s most acclaimed dancers” (Sundstrom, 8). “Her dance photographs are beautifully free responses to light, movement and form. Niura Norskaya was dancing with Anna Pavlova at the time her picture, often titled The Head of a Dancer, was taken. The sweeping curves of an oversized black hat contrast with Norskaya’s bright, simplified features. She gleams at us like a modern porcelain doll” (Moriarty, 10-11). One of Jacobi’s most famous images, this striking 11 by 14-inch gelatin silver print, signed by her, “is a powerful and classic example” of those elements in her portraiture where “design is up-front” (Wise, 8), and further reveals that “clear perception of the essence of humanity [which] has brought to her the just honor of being ranked among the foremost portrait photographers” (Steinert, Portfolio I). Norskaya photographed by Jacobi circa 1929; print date circa 1970. Many of Jacobi’s prints “have no vintage counterparts” (White, 5n), in that she was forced to flee Germany in the early 1930s and “leave behind more than 90 percent of her archives, all of which the Nazis destroyed” (New York Times). See Moriarty, 23; White 139; Wise, 135. From the estate of Lotte Jacobi. With penciled notation “#21” on print verso.A fine signed print. [Attributes: Signed Copy]

        Photograph signed. Kollwitz

1970 - JACOBI, Lotte. Photograph signed. Käthe Kollwitz. No place, circa 1970. Gelatin silver print (measures 10 by 13 inches), signed on print recto. Matted and framed, entire piece measures 16 by 19 inches. $7500.Large gelatin silver print of the legendary German artist, this rarely seen image of a pensive Kollwitz captured by Jacobi the same day in 1931 as her more common portrait of the artist facing the camera, with Jacobi’s trademark penciled signature at the corner of this 10 by 13-inch print. This large gelatin silver print of renowned artist Käthe Kollwitz, signed by Lotte Jacobi, catches Kollwitz in a moment at once pensive and restless, thus offering a rarely seen image that contrasts with Jacobi’s more common view of Kollwitz facing the camera. Jacobi took both photographs when Kollwitz was at her studio to be photographed “for a magazine Die Schaffende Frau [The Creative Woman] in 1931. She came wearing a lace collar and most of the pictures were made with it close around the neck. Toward the end Kollwitz reluctantly removed the collar,” a move that defines Jacobi’s exceptional work, with its considered artlessness. In her portraits of Kollwitz, Einstein, Robert Frost and others, “design and composition serve as vehicles of emotional expression however muted” (Wise, 19). It is this truth that strikes at the core of Jacobi’s brilliance in photographs “celebrated for their directness, their penetrating immediacy.”In the glittering artistic world of early 1930s Berlin, both Kollwitz and Jacobi were well-knownâ€"Kollwitz as one of Germany’s most beloved artists and Jacobi as one of a famous family of photographers whose own work reflected a fresh “personal style and artistic voice. It was her contact with the thriving Berlin art community that galvanized her imagination… German Expressionist artists like Kollwitz and Grosz shared Jacobi’s interest in revealing human emotions” (Sundstom, 1, 5-6). Not long after this portrait was taken, Jacobi had to flee Nazi Germany and “much of her work was lost… Thousands of glass plates, countless files of negatives” (Wise, 8). She was “forced to leave behind more than 90 percent of her archives, all of which the Nazis destroyed” (New York Times). Kollwitz, similarly, was soon “forced to resign her post as director of graphic arts at the Prussian Academy of Arts… [and] an exhibition of her work was banned in 1936” (Moriarty, 12). Full-bleed gelatin silver print (measures 10 by 13 inches), with Jacobi’s trademark penciled signature at the lower right corner of print recto. Print date circa 1970. See White 151.
