        One Hundred Years of Solitude.

New York: Harper & Row, 1970. First American edition of the author's magnum opus. Octavo, original green cloth with gilt lettering to the spine. Inscribed by Gabriel Garcia Marquez on the dedication page. Fine in a near fine first issue dust jacket with only light wear to the extremities. Housed in a custom half morocco clamshell box. An exceptional example of this landmark novel, seldom found inscribed. "One Hundred Years of Solitude chronicles the life of Macondo, a fictional town based in part of Garcia Marquez's hometown of Aracataca, Columbia, and seven generations of the founding family, the Buendias. He creates a complex world with characters and events that display the full range of human experience. For the reader, the pleasure of the novel derives from its fast-paced narrative, humor, vivid characters, and fantasy elements. In this 'magic realism', the author combines imaginative flights of fancy with social realism to give us images of levitating priests, flying carpets, a four-year-long rainstorm, and a young woman ascending to heaven while folding sheets" (NYPL Books of the Century 31).

        Hiroshima Now

Tokyo: Shinya Soshosha, 1970. One page creased due to a publication flaw, some light foxing to the edges; almost a near fine copy in a near fine jacket with the instantly recognizable photograph a plane's landing gear with a gray Hiroshima spread out in the distance.. First Edition. Square quarto. SIGNED by the photographer in Japanese. Essay in English by Tadanori Yokoo. "Comment" by Hideo Nakai. Black and white images of latesixties Hiroshima, mostly dispassionate street scenes and snippets of daily life, with a few medical zingers interspersed throughout. Sometimes photobooks with ostensibly banal shots can appear painfully artistic (the Dusseldorf photographers come to mind), but in this book the spare image of a rainy Hiroshima street, or a solitary man at a ramen counter, has a perverse, almost hypnotic power.

Walkabout (Original screenplay for the 1971 film)

London: Max L. Raab / Si Litvinoff Productions, 1970. Draft script for the 1971 film. After working for nearly a year to untangle the rights first assigned to director Richard Lester to direct the film, producer Litvinoff gained legal control of the property and had Nicholas Roeg and playwright Edward Bond rewrite the adaptation completely. Roeg directed the film in the Australian Outback in 1969, and the finished work was released in 1971. Today the film is considered a late masterpiece of poetic realism, informed by Roeg's attention to detail and psychedelic approach to visual storytelling. Pale green studio wrappers, with credits for producers Raab and Litvinoff. Title page present, with credits for story writers Roeg and Bond, screenwriter Bond, novelist Marshall, and producers Raab and Litvinoff. 68 leaves, mechanically reproduced. Pages about Fine, wrapper Very Good plus bound internally with two silver brads. Criterion Collection 10.

As New (from Friedlander's personal archive). Friedlander's Self-Portraits call attention to the complex, fractured and sometimes dissimulating interplay between various screens, shadows, reflections, lenses and the surfaces of the photographs themselves. Introducing this body of work, Friedlander wrote, "I might call myself an intruder." Following this, in Andrew Roth's Book of 101 Books Vince Aletti asserts, "Friedlander does seem to be lurking or barging into his own pictures -- a hovering, disembodied Everyman, at once here and gone. Like the ephemeral figures in nineteenth-century spirit photos, he appears as a shadow, a reflection, a pair of shoes, a barely discernible shape. Although there are a number of shots where Friedlander's head is clearly visible in a mirror or looms unmediated into the frame, none are conventional or in any sense flattering self-portraits.Mostly, however, he seems determined to remove himself from the frame -- to become not the subject of the picture but just another incidental bit of photographic phenomena, no more important that a shaft of sunlight or a shop window or a passing shadow." Signed by Author. As New (from Friedlander's personal archive) [Attributes: First Edition; Signed Copy; Hard Cover]
